Do you ever feel like you're living in Groundhog Day where the events yesterday, feel like today, and you're probably going to have those same feelings tomorrow? The weeks are moving fast yet you don't feel like much is changing? If this is the case you might be in a rut. If I'm being honest, I'm coming out of a period of my life where I've felt like I've been in a rut. I've had my head down, hard at work. I'm really satisfied with most of the elements of my life right now but I have this underlying feeling of unease. I don't need to blow anything up but I've been looking for some change.Luckily, Les Alfred came into my life at the right time. This conversation gave me some ideas for embracing more spontaneity, mixing up routines, and busting out of my rut. Implementing her practical advice has me feeling like I'm headed in the right direction now.Les is the creator and host behind the wildly popular podcast, Balanced Black Girl where she covers various aspects of wellness with approachability and care.I'll be honest, I became a bit of a superfan after binging her show in preparation for this conversation and one of my favorite series she did was all about leveling up. The first half of this conversation we talk about practical tips for busting out of a rut but as we enter the second half of the episode, we talk about so many implementable concepts like time audits, your confidence account, and creating a brag file. I think all 3 of these concepts will level up your career so stick around until the end.Speaking up that, hit the follow button on your podcast player right now. Religion is man's attempt to earn God's favor. But that's absurd, because it's just not possible. It doesn't matter what you do — going to church 365 days a year, reading your Bible every day, or even praying every day won't put you at the front of the line. They're all good things, but they won't change your heart. Only God can save you, and He is checking your heart. Be encouraged to check yours, too, as you stop being religious and receive God's gift of eternal life.Host Barry Meguiar is a car guy and businessman who hosted the popular TV show, Car Crazy, on Discovery Networks for 18 years. Do you ever find yourself feeling bad about feeling bad? It's very common that instead of living in the present and accepting things as they are, we live in stories about how we wish things would be. So we end up isolating ourselves thinking other, better people than us, don't think the same way as us, when in reality, no one is perfect. The thoughts you have are a product of your past experiences, your conditioning, and your socialization, and diet culture. They are simply a string of words put together. They do not mean anything about you as a person. In this episode, you'll learn:How ‘should'ing yourself only sets you up to feel guiltyWhy your thoughts mean nothing about you as a personHow shame hinders our ability to inspire changeMentioned on the show: Self Compassion Journal PromptsFood & Body Image CoachingLet's Connect:Join my Facebook CommunityFollow me on Instagram

Today on episode 25 let's give a hot stew welcome to climber and all-around curious guy, Erich Purpur. Erich works in the university system in Virginia, finding time in the margins to climb up to V10 and 5.13c. Recently, Erich is beginning to envision a potential life of financial independence. But achieving financial independence may only be the beginning of the next journey.Erich originally caught my attention because of his insightful line of questioning. He had a few investing questions to be sure, but what captivated me was his deeper questions about “why.”Why do we bother to save this much money? How do we come to common ground on money mindsets between our families, friends, and romantic partners? Why do men and women feel differently on the concept of early retirement? After all, most of us now know that simply building wealth is far from a sure path to contentment. While I wouldn't consider this a reader case study per se, a conversation with Erich felt like a representative sample of many of the broader themes of this lifestyle choice. And on that note, this certainly was a conversation. While I'm accustomed to sitting back and asking all the questions, Erich turned this one around on me. In the end, this felt like a fun fireside chat. I really enjoyed the informal nature of this one. Topics Discussed with Erich PurpurMotivations for the pursuit of financial independenceShifting a natural tendency towards saving to a plan of investingAddressing different money mindsets in romantic relationshipsThe beauty of “paying yourself first”Early retirement mindset differences between men and womenThe dilemma between early retirement and part-time, or passion-based workThe incredible value of being a simple personHow to live our best life without full financial independence (it's a spectrum!)The FIRE movement as SCANDALOUS! One in five Australians are challenged with their mental health. Pretty much every leader is going to have to guide people who are suffering, and yet historically, the focus of leadership and management has been on professional performance rather than state of mind. Our guest this week, Sophie Aghdami, has been through her own mental battles and come out the other side to become an addiction recovery coach and brand strategist. We're particularly interested to speak to her because she has a foot in both camps. She has been in high-level roles in some impressive brands in the UK, and runs her own coaching practice called The Wolf You Feed.We talk to her about how she juggled her own addiction with a high-powered career, how leaders can spot the warning signs among their own colleagues, and how a leader can step up to inspire and support those who really need it.In this episode you will learn:The true meaning of ‘recovery'How to regain controlThe difference between recovery in rehab and recovery at homeWhat a recovery coach can do for an executiveWhy Zoom counselling/coaching can sometimes be better than in-personHow leaders can reduce the stigma of addiction and recovery in their teamThe ‘grey area' of addictionWhat a leader should do to broach the topic if they suspect one of their team is struggling with addictionThe addiction cycle modelHow a leader can demonstrate they understand addictionThe meaning of ‘The Wolf That You Feed'Useful Links:The Wolf You Feed website - http://www.thewolfyoufeed.com People Leaders Website - https://peopleleaders.com.au/ People Leaders on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/people-leaders-pty-ltd/Jan Terkelsen on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/janterkelsen/Michelle Terkelsen on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/michelle-terkelsen-creating-high-performing-teams-a992744/People Leaders Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/PeopleLeaders/Twitter - https://twitter.com/PeopleLeadersPeople Leaders Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/people.leaders

1 in 54 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Often a child diagnosed with it will be prescribed a complex cocktail of medications. The challenge is determining the best treatment plan, while taking into account drug interactions and side effects. Thanks to advances in testing, there's a way to take into account a patient's personal genetic information, which reduces the painful process of trial-and-error. The Genomind® Professional PGx Express™ test is a cheek swab that looks at 24 genes related to mental health treatments. It can identify, which medications may be less likely to cause side effects and which medications may be more likely to be effective for the patient, subsequently aiding in prescription choices, as well as, how a patient metabolizes medications for dosing guidance. Today's special guest, Amy Edgar, APRN, CRNP & FNP-C, a nurse practitioner, founder and director of the Children's Integrated Center for Success, which offers services for children with autism, is here to discuss How genes involved in brain growth and development play a role in autismWhy symptoms and signs of autism vary from person to personHow the PGx Express Test can make management of treatment more simpleThe ways in which early intervention can make a difference in understanding autism milestonees

“Creativity has this amazing POWER to give you renewed enthusiasm and energy – even in the most difficult circumstances.” Welcome to Episode 5: Creativity Overflow! Creativity is truly at the core of being human -- whether you feel you are a creative individual at heart or not. In my opinion, everyone is. It is what links your heart and your head. It is sort of a catch-all idea that encompasses so many things. It is hard to nail down, but you know it when you see it, and when you feel it. One thing it's not is a “superpower” you are just born with. It's not exclusive. Creativity is magical, but it is NOT magic. And anyone can tap into their creative energy to make something special with hard work, dedication to learning and a bit of luck. Here's what we will be untangling in this episode ...What it means to be a naturally creative personHow the new working climate demands we all shift our thoughts on creativityHow to structure your days so you can tap into your maximum creativityTips and tricks to learn how to release the creativity deep inside of everyoneAre you ready?Pop in your awesome earbuds and let's dive in!

I recently created a poll on my Instagram account, (be sure to follow me, @clairetheheartbreakcoach) and in the poll, I asked whether or not you should talk about your ex on a first date. The majority of people said no, you shouldn’t talk about your ex on a first date, and I could not disagree more! Talking about your dating history, and learning about the other person’s, can be really helpful for understanding where each of you is, and what you’re looking for. You should have nothing to hide, and neither should the person you’re dating. You’ve got nothing to lose! If you’re interested in taking this work deeper, or if you’ve been listening to this podcast for a while and aren’t creating the results you’re looking for, you can apply to join the waitlist for my one-on-one coaching at https://clairetheheartbreakcoach.com/work-with-me. Blanche Colson got in touch with Debbie after listening to a previous episode with entrepreneur Peter Corbett on the topic of mortality, death and becoming a hospice volunteer. Blanche knew Peter through the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care and wanted to tell her own story about her evolving relationship with death. Blanche retired after a career in school administration in Eugene, OR. She’s an empty nester, having raised two children as a single parent, and was wondering what’s next when a near fatal car accident jolted her into realizing it was time to make a change. She wanted to get more comfortable with the mystery of death and our reluctance to talk about it so she moved from Eugene to New York to study at the Zen Center, where she met Peter. This is where Debbie challenges her on being ordinary, as not everyone would get on a plane and move to New York to study death and dying.Through the Zen Center’s program, she learnt the basics of contemplative care: sitting at the bedside of the sick and dying, truly listening and resisting the impulse to save or rescue them. As part of the training, she volunteered at a geriatric center where the residents were wheelchair or bed bound and utterly dependent on the staff for their needs. You’ll hear her mention Chodo. Robert Chodo Campbell is a well-known Sensei or Buddhist teacher and the co-founder of NY’s Zen Center. He was Blanche’s mentor. There’s one more thing Blanche mentions: an intentional community. It means a planned residential community designed around social cohesion and teamwork. Not a hippie commune exactly but definitely a place for the alternative-minded. She lived in an intentional community near Eugene for 20 years. And she chose Ganas, an intentional community on Staten Island, as her home in New York. Again not something that an ordinary person might do.Finally, Blanche’s time at the Zen Center was only the first step in her journey to change the perception of death as dark, fearful and something we can’t talk about. Since this conversation she has officially started her training to become a death celebrant or death doula. Blanche pitched herself as an ordinary person, someone whose perspective is too often lacking on podcasts. But she’s really not ordinary at all. She’s brave and adventurous, just the kind of guest who should be on a Gap Year podcast. What they talked aboutWhy death as a topic is tabooWhat it means to be an ordinary personHow her experience as an African American woman has affected her spiritualityThe unfairness of life for an African American womanHow old people are tucked awayLearning to really listen instead of wanting to fix other people’s sufferingLearning how not to judgeThe advantage of spontaneity in making life changing decisionsHer advice for ordinary people seeking to make a change: take the next step and forget about the big picture Mentioned in the episode or useful linksLet's Talk About Death (Over Dinner)New York Zen Center for Contemplative CareSensei Robert Chodo Campbell (Blanche’s mentor)Ganas community on Staten IslandDefinition of an intentional communityThe New York Center for Nonviolent CommunicationDeath midwife or doulaBlanche interviewed on the Far Out podcast on "reclaiming death and grief Support this podcast:Leave a review on iTunes: it means so much!Subscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher or Spotify Credits:Host: Debbie WeilProducer: Julie-Roxane KrikorianPodcast websiteMusic by Manuel Senfft Connect with us:Email: thegapyearpodcast@gmail.comTwitter: @debbieweilInsta: @debbieweilDebbie and Sam's blog: Gap Year After Sixty

https://youtu.be/9WXMeW0CH8g Do you have a daughter who feels more like a boy than a girl and wants to have a sex change? Or do you maybe have a son who came home from college last Thanksgiving and shared the news over the turkey dinner: “Mom, Dad, I'm gay”? If you are a parent who is facing or has faced one of these difficult and very modern situations, you might be as, if not more, confused about “gender” as your child. In this episode, guest Katrina Zeno explains how the road to our modern confusion about “gender” has taken hundreds of years to develop. Katrina sees the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas and Pope St. JPII as offering much-needed clarifications on matters of sexual identity. Katrina Zeno is the coordinator of the St. John Paul II Resource Center for Theology of the Body and Culture for the Diocese of Phoenix. She is the author of three books including Discovering the Feminine Genius and The Body Reveals God. Katrina has been speaking nationally and internationally on St. John Paul II's "theology of the body" for over 21 years. Born and raised in San Diego, she received her B.A. in theology from Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio and her Masters in Theological Studies from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute in Washington, DC. In this episode Katrina addresses: How the body and the spirit are supposed to be unitedWhy some theology of the body speakers might have what appears to be a risqué presentation styleHow theology of the body in many ways is about trying to recompose the human nature in the fullness of the truth that we are an embodied spiritHow 700 years of philosophy led us to our current thinking on matters of sexual identityHow the nominalism of William of Ockham and its overemphasis of God's will was the beginning of where philosophical thinking got off trackThe importance of accepting that there are universals or natures in correctly understanding sexual identityHow René Descartes jettisoned the essence and purpose of things, leaving only the function, and how he erroneously over-emphasized the human willHow Sir Francis Bacon's view that there is no permanent essence and no purpose devalued deductive reasoning such that it overemphasized the experimental method in understanding the how things work and how such a view is being used today to wrongfully discount proper views of sexuality and moralityThe importance of knowing the difference between meaning and function and their proper applications as pertains to determining the morally righteous use of the human bodyHow Charles Darwin sought to show that the origin of the species did not include God and how Darwinism's Godless arbitrariness fails to adequately explain the nature of human sexualityHow Friedrich Nietzsche had good intentions but the wrong solution regarding the problem of defining sexual natureHow Nietzsche erroneously our understanding of God to be a projection of human psychology, e.g. a shame-riddled person will see God as honorableHow Nietzsche's claim that “God is dead and we have killed him” makes sense in the context of his erroneous understanding of GodHow Nietzsche's “will to power” is another example of an overemphasis on the will, albeit an atheistic viewpointHow Nietzsche's view that “We go beyond good and evil” is dangerous when used to define and understand the sexual nature of the human personHow the structure of reality has been discarded by NietzscheHow the solution to all the confusion created by erroneous philosophies is the “recapturing of human nature made for union and communion through a total gift of self in love”How the closest we can get to giving a total gift of self is in the marital actHow in receiving the Holy Eucharist when properly disposed, we become one flesh with God and experience the ultimate purpose of what our bodies were created forWhat is her most basic book on the Theology of the Body?
