Ahead of his MA degree show, artist Jonathan Tignor talks about his recent interest in visual binaries, finding a balance between research and intuition, the life cycles of paintings, and much more. Jonathan Tignor's (b. 1997, Dallas TX) paintings betray a concern with narrative. However, this is a conflation of his interests in imagery and tension. Stories are built around tension, and Tignor uses this as the building material in his paintings. Consequently, the narratives that then unfold are never clear. They simmer in ambiguity and allow space for the creative act within the processes of looking and interpretation. Tignor's paintings ask viewers to linger with the strangeness of what's before them and question the role of their viewership through images that integrate themes like violence and precarity. There is a desire to look, a desire to look away, and a persistent wish to see something you shouldn't. Tignor is a London-based artist originally from Dallas, Texas. He graduated from Colorado College with a BA in Creative Writing in 2019, and went on to receive a Post-Baccalaureate in Studio Art at the Burren College of Art in 2023, and a MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2024. • Jonathan's work: https://www.jonathantignor.com/ • Jonathan's Instagram: @jtig.art

Bobby Joe Smith III is a Black and Lakota (Hunkpapa and Oohenumpa) graphic designer and media artist. Design, computation, performance, writing, and lens-based image-making are mediums of expression and inquiry he turns to often. His creative practice is rooted in the ongoing decolonial and abolitionist movements led by Indigenous communities on Turtle Island and across the Black diaspora. His research draws from the decolonial, abolitionist, and post-apocalyptic strategies of Black and Indigenous people to construct a poetic vernacular of "unsettling grammars"—gestures, methodologies, and utterances that deviate, disrupt, and dismantle settler-colonial systems. By rearticulating these "unsettling grammars" through the disciplines of media art and design, Bobby Joe seeks to reveal vectors leading toward decolonial futures and generate work that resonates with the people and movements that comprise his community. He currently is pursuing an MFA from UCLA's Design | Media Arts department and holds an MFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), a Post-Baccalaureate degree in Graphic Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and a B.A. in Philosophy and Political Science from Middlebury College. In this episode, listen as we discuss how Bobby Joe utilizes design to uplift his community and how we can encourage students to think about design in a way that is meaningful to them.

Inside the Benton: The podcast of the Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College
Hi and welcome to this episode of Inside the Benton. I'm your host, Hannah Avalos, and in this episode, we will explore Art Object Specimen, an exhibition that is closing in just about two weeks at the Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College. So listen to this episode and then make sure to get to the museum to see the show. Art Object, Specimen tests and explores the expectations that art museum spaces implicitly place on the objects that they display. The exhibition calls into question the categories we use to talk about objects in the world. Which objects are art? Which are specimens? Does your coffee mug become art if it goes from your kitchen table into a museum? What does it mean to be an object? Much like how the geological specimens in the show index moments in earth's history, this episode serves as a record of what this exhibition captured. In this episode you'll hear me talk first with Noor Tamari ‘22 about the snuff bottles in the collection. And from the geology department, you will hear both from D'maia Curry, ‘19 who was also the Benton's Post Baccalaureate fellow, and Geology Professor Jade Star Lackey. They will both talk about the intersections of art and geology and what this exhibition meant to them. Let's get into it.

Taylor Barg is a former division 1 soccer player for SMU who went into engineering after university. She recently shifted her path toward medicine, however, by entering a post-baccalaureate program. I met Taylor when I played as a practice player my sophomore year on the women’s soccer team and as I mention in the episode, even as a younger player, she was a clear leader who brought both the energy and level of play up during games while retaining a composed mindset. That, her ability to balance an engineering degree with soccer, and her recent transition towards medicine all had me pretty excited to talk to her on the podcast. In this episode, we cover all of those topics, as well as the ways her post-bacc has been such a valuable experience, the connections built from vulnerable environments and the hope that can result from them, and on how time is going to pass regardless of what you do. I would stick around till the end of this one because Taylor has a great and motivating message. Enjoy!-----Podcast IG: https://www.instagram.com/seekingauthenticitypodcast/Podcast Website: https://seekingauthenticity.buzzsprout.com/©Flint Mitchell

The Modern Hermeticist himself in the house. Dan Attrell is here to talk all about translating one of the preeminent texts, maybe the preeminent text, in the history of Western esotericism: the Picatrix. The Picatrix is perhaps the premiere text written on the subject of astrological magic - a manual for constructing talismans, mixing magical compounds, summoning planetary spirits, and determining astrological conditions. Originally composed in Arabic around the 11th century, it was then translated into Latin in the 13th century, and it is that Latin translation that Dan and his co-translator David Porecca have worked to produce this new English version, which offers important insights not only into occult practices and beliefs but also into the transmission of magical ideas from antiquity to the present. Dan is an historian, classicist, philosopher, and musician. He has a Bachelor of Arts in History and Classical Studies, a Masters in Ancient Mediterranean Cultures from the University of Waterloo with a thesis on shamanic motifs in the ecstatic mystery rites of Attis and Cybele. He’s also completed a Post-Baccalaureate in Classics at UCLA, focusing on the translation of ancient Greek and Latin texts. And he is currently at the University of Waterloo doing his PhD in History on Renaissance Hermeticism/Platonic Orientalism, Medieval religion, and science. Some of you also know him from his Modern Hermeticist YouTube channel, where he has more than 30,000 subscribers and has produced some of the most in-depth material on the subject of Hermeticism in his series of lectures called Encyclopedia Hermetica.
