In today's episode, I share another fun recipe suitable for fall, talk a little bit about the Cozy Christmas Book Club, then I read Robert McCormick's article that was written for Charles Dickens' magazine Household Words in December of 1850. Dickens himself probably wrote the introduction and conclusion of the article, but McCormick reflects on his experiences of celebrating Christmas in Anarctica during a naval exploration he was involved with. It's a fascinating look at how people can find Christmas cheer no matter where they may find themselves! Wind whips over ice, Fingers numb, breath clouds the air, Sun a pale, cold eye. First comes the snow, then the cold. Bitter cold. Ugh, remind me again why I live here. I couldn't resist a quick following up the snow mix with a frozen mix. Just like the snow mix, all the tracks here have cold words in their titles. I really liked putting two tracks from Harry Towell back-to-back. One new one from last year called Coldspell and then one from all the way back in 2010 that he released under his Spheruleus moniker called simply, Frozen. I was literally drinking hot coco with peppermint while mixing these tracks so I suggest you do the same while listening. Or maybe something a bit stronger. Hurtigruten's MS Fram : Expedition Ship Behind the Scenes Take a peek behind the scenes of a polar expedition ship, Hurtigruten's MS Fram, the ship I recently took on my three week expedition to Antarctica and the Falkland and South Georgia Islands. I wondered how they made things operate so smoothly when we were so far from civilization and a hardward store for parts, a grocery store for food, and a water or sewage treatment plant for our daily necesities. Today, we explore the Bridge, where the Captain and crew navigate, the Kitchen, the Engine Room, the Expdition's Tender Pit, and the Crew Quarters. It's a fascinating journey! A brief account of the 1907-1909 British Antarctic Expedition by Ernest Henry Shackleton, recorded in 1910.
On Wednesday's Morning Focus, Pat Flynn was joined by an Ennis writer, children's entertainer and former journalist Anthony Galvin who has been chosen to take part in one of the most ambitious and important polar expeditions of our time. Anthony will be part of a select group hoping to reach the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility to collect vital climate change data. The Northern Pole of Inaccessibility which is 270 miles further than the Geographic North Pole is yet to be reached by humankind.
In this weekend edition: In 1915, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton's mission to cross the Antarctic ended in tragedy when his ship the Endurance became trapped in ice. Shackleton and his men lived on the wooden ship for months until the ice started to crush it. They escaped, and the Endurance sank into the Weddell Sea on Nov. 21, 1915. Now, 106 years later, searchers have found the shipwreck. From this week's AirTalk with Larry Mantle. In 1909, the South Pole remained the last major geographic trophy to be won. Captain Robert Scott, who led the British expedition, was not going to rush: he developed a three-year program that involved extensive scientific research and systematic preparations for the trip to the Pole. He had no idea how much the Norwegians would interfere with his plans. In this episode of ‘How It Was,' we'll tell you about one of the most dramatic confrontations in the history of geographical discoveries - the rivalry between the British and Norwegians for the title of the first conquerors of the South Pole. Who coped better with the task: strong and hardy Norwegians, dressed in animal furs, or British scientists, equipped with the latest science supplies? What mistakes can cost lives in Antarctica, and how can a literary gift turn defeat into victory? These are the topics explored in our new episode.

In this special episode, Mr. D goes through one of the little know bits of American history. During WWI, American soldiers actually were part of a small "invasion" of Russia that became known as The Polar Expedition. Few Americans know this tale, and how the Allies in WWI tried to eliminate the Soviets before they could rise in 1918 and 1919. In this episode, Mr. D summarizes and reviews a work done by James Carl Nelson titled The Polar Expedition. Please check out the book! It was an excellent work.

A massive scientific mission is underway in the Arctic. Physicists, chemists, and biologists are studying the changing region, so they can better predict what might be ahead for the Arctic...and the planet. But first, they had to find a patch of ice suitable to get stuck in, so they could freeze in place and study it for an entire year. Reporter Ravenna Koenig was along for the journey. Outdoor adventurer and Polar expedition guide. Dagný Ívarsdóttir We all need to take climate change and the health of our natural environment very seriously. By exploring the outdoors and immersing ourselves in the planets beauty, we can learn so much about it. It’s possible that some of the solutions to our planets health will come from businesses and practices that teach people to participate in healthy ways with the outdoors. In this episode we will discuss: Having a healthy active lifestyle, promotes a better attitude toward the world and our view of ourselves in the natural world. Building strong community values, where people feel a sense of responsibility toward one another is key to better serving the environment. Communities such as those we find in Iceland, have high levels of happiness and health due to their strong connections to their common values. We discuss if it is possible to create such common values in large multicultural urban environments. What could be the underlying cause for the high levels of happiness in Iceland. We talk about the importance of having a vision for your future. Dreaming of a better life and working hard toward that goal. Living intentionally and keeping yourself fit and knowledgeable so that you remain relevant. Even when we lack the academic background to some professions, there are many other ways in which we can find our place in that field. When we find ourselves in new territory, our insecurities can come out in the form of “imposter syndrome”. This is when we doubt our accomplishments and fear we will be discovered as a fraud. We need to teach people to be more optimistic and have a lighter approach to the environment. Being radical and having extremist views doesn't serve the cause effectively. Welcome to Further, Faster, in association with Montane. Presented by Daniel Neilson. In this episode, we talk to the legend that is Martin Hartley. Martin could be described as a professional extreme photographer. But that doesn’t do him justice. He could be described as a polar explorer, but again, that doesn’t really cover what he does. His photos have appeared in The New York Times and Outside magazine, he’s had exhibitions at Christie’s, Royal Geographic Society and the Scott Polar Research Institute, and he is the Director of Photography for the iconic Sidetracked Magazine. He is a veteran of 20 polar expeditions, including trips working with the European Space Agency and NASA. And in 2009, he was named as one of Time magazine's most prestigious Heroes of the Environment. But he describes his proudest moment when his polar images were exhibited at the United Nations’ climate change conference in Copenhagen. Here his photography helped to influence the future of our planet on the most important stage of all. And that’s perhaps the key defining message throughout his work. More than most people on this planet, he’s seen how climate change is affecting the polar regions. He also once took the FA Cup to the South Pole, but that’s a story for another day. In this podcast, we talk about his enduring love of the Arctic Ocean, how he keeps trudging on after months on the ice, and the terrible effects of climate change he’s observed in the 16 years he’s been visiting the Arctic, as well as hearing about cutting-edge technology that could help the effects. So how to describe Martin? Well, listen in to this incredible, fun and insightful conversation we had with him and you’ll be a little nearer the mark. You can follow Martin on Instagram: @MartinRHartley or check out his website: www.martinhartley.com
In this episode, we catch up with polar expedition photographer John Bozinov. John has photographed over 30 landings across 6 seasons in both the Arctic and the Antarctic regions. His Instagram account @johnbozinov has garnered hundreds of thousands of followers with his clean and authentic images of the polar regions, shot almost entirely on the iPhone. His goal is to share imagery that encourages the protection and conservation of this vulnerable and delicate part of the world. In this episode we talk about how his journey into the polar regions began, developing his unique photography style, how to differentiate yourself from everyone else, why his camera of choice is the iPhone, getting a random phone call from Apple, a day in the life of a polar expedition photographer and the realities of being a full time Instagrammer. https://www.instagram.com/johnbozinov/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/stateoftheartist/support
