What does it really mean to feel seen by an AI?In this episode of The Augmented Life, Michael Tiffany is joined by Keri Rich, VP of Product at Lucidworks, to unpack one of the thorniest challenges in AI: how to personalize experiences without making users feel stalked.Together, they explore:They also go deep on the unexpected challenges of building agentic products, tuning retrieval systems for personality, and why the real magic lies in designing systems that feel human… but not too human. If you're thinking about the future of AI, product leadership, or just want to understand where personalized tech is heading next—this one's for you.
The money flow for generative artificial intelligence projects is starting to slow down, as companies begin to scrutinize the return on investment for these projects, and doubts creep in about accuracy, hallucinations and other potential problems. Hidden costs are also becoming less-than-hidden, leading many companies to wonder whether all of this hype was perhaps overblown. Keith chats with Mike Sinoway, CEO of Lucidworks, about their recent survey that showed a slowing down of AI investments across the industry and around the world.

Today's guest is Sanjay Mehta, Head of Industry Commerce for LucidWorks. Sanjay joins Seth Earley and Chris Featherstone to the discuss the rapidly evolving hype of generative AI and how it can be applied to your industry.Takeaways:Sanjay points out that emerging AI is "not turn key". Maybe from a consumer side but when it comes to B2B there are many hoops to jump through before it's easy and effective.Data is the lifeblood of modern businesses, and its true potential shines when we connect the dots between customer behaviors, product attributes, and user experiences. At the heart of this transformation is the concept of ingesting good product data into the vector space. There are many preceded knowledge graphs for certain industries. When you build your index of data it is important to know your users context and application. Using a knowledge base to build your own vector space can be helpful. Welcome to Reimagining Company Culture, a series discussing emerging trends and priorities shaping the future of workplace culture and employee wellbeing. We highlight thought leaders who are constantly evolving their strategy and can provide insight to folks about how to address new business challenges. AllVoices is on a mission to create safe, happy, and healthy workplaces for all, and we're excited to learn from experts who share our mission. In this episode of Reimagining Company Culture, we're chatting with Ellen Petry Leanse, Chief People Officer at Lucidworks. A Silicon Valley veteran and Stanford University instructor, an alum of early Apple, Google, entrepreneurship, and strategic work with dozens of tech founders and household-name companies, Ellen stepped into the forefront of innovation in 1985 as a digital pioneer and the founder of Apple's first online communities.About AllVoicesIn today's workforce, people often don't feel empowered to speak up and voice their opinions about workplace issues, including harassment, bias, and other culture issues. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Our goal is to help create safer, more inclusive companies. To learn more about AllVoices visit us at www.allvoices.co!

Ellen Leanse has a wealth of absolutely wild experiences through a career that seems to parallel much of the technology growth in the Bay Area. She worked with Apple during the Lisa and Macintosh launches, as well as with Google, Facebook, Samsung, and a variety of other fascinating organizations. With these experiences under her belt, Ellen has also taken on leadership and thought-leading roles, serving as an advisor and board member for several companies, as a teacher at Stanford, and an author for the book The Happiness Hack, a best-selling guide to the neuroscience of happiness and life satisfaction, and now as the Chief People Officer at Lucidworks! But on a personal note, Ellen is just extremely kind. She has been willing to give me some of her time to ask questions about her experiences and thoughts and to learn from her and I am extremely grateful for that. In this conversation, she tells a wild story from the early days at Apple. After that, the discussion moves towards the shift in perspective she’s had over the years. We talk about having a nonlinear career, finding satisfaction by chasing what you’re curious or nervous over, about doing work that will lead to leaving a positive legacy, and about innovating in technology. Mark Mirchandani is joined again by Priyanka Vergadia this week for an ML-filled interview with Radu Miclaus of Lucidworks. Lucidworks, a company specializing in information retrieval, strives to make data searching easier for developers and users. Building off Solr, Lucidworks created Fusion, an environment more conducive to easy AI-enhanced query capabilities, better scalability, and more. With Fusion, developers can take advantage of the highly advanced relevance tuning tools such as query rewrites, which analyze user behavior and automatically rewrite queries based on that information. On the tech side, Fusion was built with a combination of Java, Kubernetes to increase scalability, Solr management tools, and logging and reporting tools. The engineers at Lucidworks have created Fusion-specific system-enhancing pieces as well, including a machine learning service that allows data scientists to train their models elsewhere and plug them in for a completely customized experience. The team also created Smart Answers, which is a Q-And-A system built on a search engine that can connect to chatbots, virtual assistants, and others. Radu goes into detail explaining the Smart Answers system and how the layers of the project work together. We also learn about the customization capabilities and integration of Smart Answers. Radu wraps up the show with interesting use-case stories and how Fusion is working in the real world. In the future, Lucidworks will be available right in the GCP marketplace! Radu Miclaus Radu has over 12 years of experience in the data science space with applications in general machine learning architecture, search, customer analytics, risk and financial analysis. At Lucidworks, Radu focuses on low-code AI for search developers, pluggable machine learning for data scientists, and cloud managed services that offload the burden of operating search applications. Trey Grainger, Chief Algorithms Officer at Lucidworks, author, and speaker, discusses search engines, artificial intelligence, and AI-powered searches. Podcast Points: What can AI-powered searches do for me or my company? An overview of the technology behind AI-powered search engines. How employees can benefit from better search engines. Grainger is an experienced engineering and data science executive with specific expertise in search and information retrieval, as well as recommendation systems, and data analytics spaces. Grainger discusses his background and his work at Lucidworks, the successful San Francisco, California-based enterprise search technology company. As Grainger explains, Lucidworks provides its expertise in the area of AI-powered search technology to hundreds of Fortune 1000 clients. Accessing data and finding relevant results is the name of the game, and Lucidworks is exceptional in this critical area of business development. He discusses chatbots and analytics use cases, and how companies can benefit. Lucidworks assists their broad base of clients by helping them build intelligent search applications that will allow them to fully expose their products to customers and/or provide internal knowledge to all their existing employees. Grainger goes on to explain how search engines are utilized by nearly every website, but many simply don't get the job done. Lucidworks powers search engine technology that digs deeper and provides relevant results that are useful. Grainger talks about the importance of ‘bringing back' results that best match the intent of the user/searcher. Intelligent search technology must be specific, focusing on the content dimension, and user-understanding dimension, etc. For example, sophisticated search engines should be able to pick up on signals, learning what people want to ‘see' in their content, based upon their clicks and behaviors, so the engine can ‘tune' itself to find better answers for future user/searchers. He delves into the subject of domain understanding, and discusses how it drills down to what the content is really about. For the engine to understand the nuanced meaning of searches and search words is important. The context of the user is important, for example, if a user searches for the word ‘driver' while at the airport, the search engine should be able to discern that they're probably looking for an Uber or taxi driver, and probably not a device driver for their computer's OS. Context is crucial in order to provide the appropriate results. Continuing, Grainger discusses the specifics of queries, and different experiences that searches can provide. He talks about the direct correlation between improving relevance in searches to increased bottom lines. He talks about commerce use cases versus enterprise use cases, their similarities, and the benefits. Wrapping up, Grainger talks about natural language processing and the future of searches. Imagine: It’s the 80’s. You are working for a sprouting tech company called “Apple.” Many of the products that your company makes have never existed, let alone been available to the general public for purchase. Your job is to explain not only what this tech does, but why an average consumer should even want to buy it. If it sounds like a tough job, that’s because it is; but it’s exactly the job Ellen Petry Leanse took in 1981 at Apple. Her official assignment was to write a newsletter explaining how to talk to customers about Apple’s products and their capabilities. Apple had just gone public and Ellen was in for a wild ride with a company unlike any other, a company that would go on to change the world. In 1983, after a few years of on-the-job training and mentorship, Ellen was invited onto the extended Macintosh team where she became a product manager for Apple’s international products. This was at a time when Apple’s customers were not happy with the Apple II computer and Ellen recognized a disconnect between the company and its customers. To build a bridge between the two parties, she became Apple’s first user evangelist and created the first-ever digital community for a company to directly address user feedback. Ellen’s time at Apple was transformative for her professional career, but it also helped her realize her personal purpose. “A big part of my purpose is to think through how people come together.” Ellen spent over 10 years at some of the world’s most successful tech companies such as Apple, Facebook, and Google before becoming an executive coach to business leaders and an instructor at Stanford University. Ellen also wrote a book titled, The Happiness Hack: How to Take Charge of Your Brain and Program More Happiness into Your Life, which dives into ways that we can rewire our brains to live a happier and more fulfilled life. In her work today as Chief People Officer at LucidWorks, Ellen is “encouraging people to step more fully into the talent they know they have inside.” She is taking her wide-ranging experiences to create a culture of safety, experimentation, and equality. On this episode of Mission Daily, Chad and Ellen discuss Ellen’s extensive career from working at Apple to becoming an author, how she creates a culture of experimentation and risk taking at her current company, and how to bring more happiness and meaning into your day to day life. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. In this edition of the Early Adopter Research podcast, Dan Woods speaks with Grant Ingersoll, contributor to Solr, cofounder and CTO of Lucidworks, and cofounder of the Mahout Machine Learning Open Source Project, to discuss the fairness of Google search. Recently, President Trump has grabbed headlines by asserting that Google’s search algorithm is unfair. While Trump’s claims, like many he makes, are likely based more in personal animus than detailed study of the issue, he does raise an interesting point about how much we all take the results of search algorithms for granted. That makes this conversation particularly compelling, as Woods and Ingersoll talk about search algorithms in general, how companies and sites manipulate them, and whether we can truly trust the results. Topics covered include:

Lasya Marla, Director of Fusion AI at Lucidworks, a search technology company that utilizes AI to better understand human intent, provides a thorough overview of the data optimization improvements AI-based technology is delivering. Lucidworks' platform is comprised of three major areas, Fusion AI, Fusion App Studio, and Fusion Server. Fusion AI facilitates customer experiences and is driven by signal capture and relevance boosting using advanced AI machine learning. Fusion App Studio helps to create made-to-order, data-heavy searches and applications for the web and mobile technology products. Finally, Fusion Server is a search engine and NoSQL data store that provides immediate access to a person's or company's data, available when it is needed, and it can be scaled for the needs of the user. The technology director delivers an overview of ecommerce and retail website searches and queries, as well as other types of customer-based websites, and how advance machine learning can greatly enhance their users' experiences. Marla explains some of the reasons why search results can be less than desired, such as one of the dominating issues—the engine does not know what the user is searching for thus it cannot perform efficiently. She gives us an insightful look into the inner-workings of a typical search, and the problems that could arise that compromise or devalue the end results. One such issue, Marla explains, could be within the algorithm itself, and its ranking of less desired results on a higher level. For example, when one searches for a particular product, a search engine may rank accessories for that product higher in the search results due to the fact that the product name may be listed more often in the product's accessories' descriptions. This could result in a user receiving higher ranked product accessory links than the links to the actual product itself. The Fusion AI director discusses the demands that users place on search engines and how users' expectations are driving the need to develop engines that are intelligent. Marla states users expect much more; users want recommendations, and they want the engine to understand their intent, to be able to understand misspellings, etc. and still deliver relevant results. She expounds upon the methods an individual or company can use to train a made-to-order search engine model to meet the specific needs of their site's users. One such method would be to utilize modified data that is then applied and implemented into the associated query pipeline. Marla explains how companies like Amazon have raised the bar for user search experiences, but many of the features that users love on sites like Amazon, such as user recommendations can be implemented for any business site. Companies and businesses can run recommendation algorithms on their sites' search engines to increase user enjoyment, efficiency of experience, and ultimately keep the user on the site longer. Marla explains the process an individual would go through in order to utilize Lucidworks' advanced technology algorithms. For example, if an individual wanted to introduce specific algorithms onto their site and search engine, perhaps a head/tail analysis, query intent classifier, personalization module, recommendations module, etc., the individual would follow simple steps in order to retool their engine. Essentially, to migrate an ecommerce or other site into Lucidworks' platform an individual would first provide Lucidworks with all their actionable data, including valid signal data comprised of relevant user interactions. Next, they would select the desired algorithms to be applied, and then align their front-end site with the API endpoints generated by Lucidworks' proprietary technology. By streamlining the process, Lucidworks can facilitate a company's needs by allowing the retooling to be somewhat automated, in that a search developer won't need to necessarily understand what is, ‘under the hood,' in order to keep it online and efficiently running. While Lucidworks' technology-based solutions for advanced search engines can be useful to most any individual or business seeking to enhance their users' experience, Marla explains that the key ingredient in the search engine soup is the user interaction data. Without user interaction data, the algorithms may enhance the efficiency to a degree but it is this specific data that really gets the engine running at top performance, and the more data the better!

Let’s talk about your background, as it’s very rich both in the breadth of technology as well as the industries where you’ve applied your skills. Topic 2 - Let’s start with the basics of what companies do when they hire or engage data scientists. At what point do they typically shift their thinking (or problem solving) from needing Statistical Analysis to understanding when and where AI or ML are a better fit? Topic 3 - Lucidworks specializes in Enterprise Search, and is one of the primary sponsors of both Apache Lucene and Solr. How do those technologies fit into the Enterprise today, and who are newer AI/ML frameworks being built in conjunction with them? Topic 4 - As you’re working with Data Scientists, where do you see their interests evolving, or what types of problems interest them today? How do you connect and communicate this to business challenges and business leaders? Topic 5 - Can you share some of the research that you’ve been recently focused on that begin to start making it easier for non Data Scientists to start answering questions in a faster or easier manner?
