Today I have the privilege of speaking to Kathleen, or Kate, Basi. Author and liturgical composer Kathleen M. Basi is mother to three active boys (read that: always breaking something) and one chromosomally-gifted daughter. She is a fellow pastoral musician and composer as well as an author! Her nonfiction has appeared in a number of magazines, Chicken Soup for the Soul and on NPR’s All Things Considered. Today Kate was kind enough to sit down and talk about her book, “A Song For the Road”, which was just released last week! Her novel is an honest look at loss and the complexities behind grief and renewal. I myself have finished it and I think it’s an excellent read, especially for pastoral musicians. Keep listening to find out why.

This show takes the stereotypical "gender assignments" and flips them with the male role taking on the moderator and the female role doing the debate/discussion. The show goes off on a tangent discussing favorite teams when TJ suggests Devin Booker will be coming to Minneapolis and D.J. throws shade at that prediction. Discussion about Ernie Johnson, Shaq vs Chuck. D.J. talks about his experience visiting OKC, the group's love for Steven Adams, the importance of prep, taking notes, and following the notes (we're talking to you, Kate!), and the importance of preparing for "oops" moments if you have audio issues. Shea surprises everyone with the fact she used to serve Jonah Hill when she worked at a coffee shop in New York. Finally, we go through NBA Champions predictions. Note - This episode was recorded a few weeks so oops on the predictions! Hello bosses, it's episode fifty-six of The Presentation Boss Podcast! We all know that every human and their brain is effectively diluted water transmitting tiny amounts of electricity, flavoured with a few hormones. We can easily forget that other people think differently. One of the greatest mistakes we can make when communicating is to assume that others think the same way we think. But, there are trends that are common to most of us. They're called ‘cognitive biases'. Some of these prevent us from performing well, especially during presentations. But we can acknowledge, deal with and overcome those cognitive biases. Today Kate and Thomas discuss the three cognitive biases (or, psychological phenomena) that they see most commonly affect presenters in a negative sense, plus how to overcome them. What You'll Hear About:2:59 – The Curse of Knowledge – this is why we see so many presentations that are a complex maze of content, detail and often, death by PowerPoint.10:56 – The Illusion of Transparency – this explains why when we feel nervous, we tend to get caught in a spiral of panicking about what the audience must think.15:18 – Imposter Syndrome – this details why we sometimes feel like we shouldn't be the expert or how we compare ourselves to peers and superiors.Resources and Links • Email us: podcast@presentationboss.com.au• The Presentation Boss Podcast: https://presentationboss.com.au/podcast/• Kate on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kate-norris/• Thomas on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-krafft/• Presentation Boss on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/presentationboss/• Presentation Boss on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/presentation-boss

Hello! Welcome to episode 45 of the Chasing Bravery Podcast! Today I am speaking with professional runner for Nike, Olympian, and believer of sharing and engaging in the process Kate Grace! In college Kate went to Yale (she’s pretty smart, AND fast) where she broke four school records, won six Heps Championships, and was four time NCAA Division I Track and Field and Cross Country All-American. Post collegiate, Kate continued to train and race- competing in the 2012 US Olympic Track and Field Trials where she placed 20th in the 1500. For the next 4 years Kate continued to train and improve through bumps in the process. By 2016 Kate was ready to go having improved her personal best in both the 1500 meters and the 800 meter running a notable sub 2 minute prior to the trials. For those of you who are track lovers, you know how the 2016 US Olympic Track and Field Trials, 800 meter final unfolded. Kate ran a strong, smart race…winning  in a time of 1:59:10. Unfortunately, the race behind her had ended in upset with multiple racers becoming caught in a fall. Kate handled this damper on her win with grace and poise and went on to place 8th at the 2016 Olympics- the top American woman and running a PR to boot. Today Kate trains with the Bowerman Track Club and is in pursuit of second Olympic Games which have been officially postponed until July of 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Kate and I discuss her feelings about this major shift in training and how she is processing and moving forward. We chat about how it is ok and normal to feel disappointed while feeling 100% certain that postponing is the right thing to do. It was a pleasure to speak with this speedy, intelligent, and thoughtful lady. I know you will enjoy the conversation as much as I did! Kate was born in Canada and moved to the UK in her late teens. Her previous career was in marketing and project management for a media company; releasing operas, ballets and documentaries on DVD. She also co-authored a travel book about London, wrote freelance bar and restaurant reviews for magazines and lived in a narrowboat. Kate is a mum to two small children.  She tries to give them healthy, fresh food. Her love of vegetable desserts started with the cake she made for her son’s first birthday. It was to be his first taste of chocolate, and although she wasn’t going to begrudge him that, she wanted it to be a bit better for him. After a few trials, his birthday vegetable cake was ready: one layer of chocolate beetroot and one layer of chocolate butternut squash. It wasn’t exactly healthy, but it was a big step up from a shop-bought cake. Thus began Kate's love of vegetable cakes! Since then, she's had ups (parsnip and lavender cupcakes) and downs (beetroot custard… shudder), but there is one certainty: no vegetables ever rot in her fridge.  If they don’t make it to the main course, they will make it to dessert.  Kate buys organic and local as often as she can.  She'd to grow more of her own beloved vegetables but her attempts have been rather poor so far: she spends a lot of time growing slug buffets. Today Kate lives in a house on land in Somerset where most mornings she scrapes weetabix off the floor.  Oh!  And she bakes, bakes, bakes all sorts of vegetable cake.  While her little ones play, Kate clatters about the kitchen divining new concoctions.

Episode Summary: Courage isn’t a topic that I’ve talked about a lot on this show, but after learning a little more about the work that Kate Swoboda is doing, I was excited to invite her on the show. One of the things I really want to do on the Working Parent Resource Podcast is pull back the curtains on what’s REALLY motivating our behavior as working parents. I see a lot of solutions out there to help overwhelmed working parents, but a lot of them only address the surface level of the complex issues that parents are facing. Today Kate and I are diving much deeper into what really holds people back from pursuing a life that feels really GOOD for them. We talk about the reality of establishing new habits, and how our habits really are the foundation of the life we live. Kate not only offers some really interesting insights, but she also offers very practical action steps for you to take as you begin to implement these things into your own life. Kate Swoboda is the creator of YourCourageousLife.com, Director of the Courageous Living Coach Certification at TribeCLCC.com, and author of the book, The Courage Habit. Her work has appeared in USA Today, Forbes, Entrepreneur, MindBodyGreen, and more. The Courage Habit discusses the connection between the psychology of courage and the neuropsychology of habit-formation, and the tools can be used in leadership, parenting, with creativity, and more.  Show Notes:  http://workingparentresource.com/54 Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode: Kate Swoboda Website Kate Swoboda Facebook Kate Swoboda Instagram The Courage Habit: How to Accept Your Fears, Release the Past, and Live Your Courageous Life by Kate Swoboda Avoid These Risks of Being a Perfect Parent When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times by Pema Chodron Burnout Rescue Plan Deliberate Life Challenge Working Parent Resource Website About the Working Parent Resource: Welcome to the Working Parent Resource Podcast. How Do We Cling to Hope in the Midst of Tragedy? What is God doing in our lives when we experience suffering? How do we enter into one another's suffering well? When we face tragedy how do we keep our hearts open to hope? On today’s show, I have invited Kate Elizabeth Clark, author of the book, Where I End: A Story of Tragedy, Truth and Rebellious Hope.  In 2009, Kate Clark was a wife and active mother of two living in Michigan when a tragic playground accident left her paralyzed from the neck down. After surgery for her injured spine, she was told that she would likely never walk again. Facing the possibility of a life without being able to hug her children, walk independently, or hold her husband’s hand, Kate prayed a prayer of rebellious hope and asked God for a miracle. Today Kate will share her story hope, grief, suffering and miraculous recovery. Her story is a testimony that God is with us and faithful even in difficult circumstances. A little bit about Kate: Kate studied at the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, and Dallas Theological Seminary. With a background in psychology. She has spent much of the last twenty years working and writing for a nationwide Christian radio and counseling ministry. Achieve More by Doing Less and Being Present — Kate Northrup

#008 — “My greatest satisfaction has not come—ever—from doing more. It’s come from being really present doing the things that matter the most.” It’s hard to argue with Kate Northrup’s contention that the eight-hour workday doesn’t work from a productivity standpoint. Study after study shows that only three (or so) of those eight hours are productive ones, and I think we can all get on board with the idea of getting better results—while putting in less time at work. The problem is, how do we shift that mindset? How do we shift the idea that tells us the only way to get what we want is to do more and more work?  Kate Northrup always knew she wanted to be a mother, and she pursued entrepreneurship partly because of the freedom it could afford her to be there for her kids. What Kate wasn’t counting on was the way pregnancy would change her drive and refocus her energy when it came to the business. She admits that it took her a long time to "get back in the game," and that her husband and business partner, Mike, picked up the slack. But Kate credits having her daughter, Penelope, with initiating a personal evolution that allowed her to clarify her desires and ultimately renew her interest in the business and the way she thought about showing up for work in the first place.  Perhaps there was something revolutionary here: because, as she shares in this episode, she found that she was able to achieve more even while doing less. And that some of her most productive weeks happened when she was working only 20 hours a week on the business.     Today Kate shares her "shocking and awesome" birth experience, explaining how parenthood impacted her business as well as her marriage. I ask her how she and Mike make their relationship work, and her take on what women need moving forward. Listen in to understand why it’s important for us all to initiate the difficult conversations around current events like Charlottesville, and how her latest project, Origin Collective, works to help entrepreneurial moms achieve greater results from doing less and showing up more fully with each other.     FULL SHOW NOTES:  Get the complete show notes with episode quotes, photos, and time stamps at www.startuppregnant.com/008.    EPISODE SPONSOR & SPECIAL OFFER:    Thank you to the sponsor of this episode: Taskerly!
