Emotions play an important role in how we think, feel, react and behave; they are an essential part of being human. Everyone goes through tough chapters in life where they experience mental and emotional stress, like sadness, anxiety, fear, and grief, for example. Acknowledging how you feel and committing to take care of yourself emotionally, creatively, physically, and spiritually, can help turn negative experiences and the thoughts and feelings that come along with it, into change, growth, and healing. In a book that's both provocative and radical, holistic psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, M.D., author of A Mind of Your Own, charts a new path to get real, get well, and get free. This is the Empowered Mama Podcast. Anxiety and depression are a mental health epidemic, with anxiety disorders taking the lead for the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 18.1% of the national population and 260 million people globally (According to the Anxiety and Depression Association). 322 million people worldwide live with depression, which occurs more often in women than men (According to the Anxiety and Depression Association). Mental health issues can happen to anyone...the mom-next-door experiencing Postpartum Depression and/or Postpartum Anxiety after the birth of her baby, the successful entrepreneur experiencing panic attacks who's been diagnosed with Panic Disorder, the nurse hiding crippling OCD from her co-workers, the wife suffering Major Depressive Disorder from the loss of a baby or her military spouse...the SAHM moms, the working moms, your best friend...you. People who experience any form of a mood disorder know how crippling these feelings and the "new normal" they seem to be facing can be. Treating any type of mental illness often requires a combination approach, ranging from talk therapy with a psychologist, meds, psychiatrist care, and/or lifestyle adjustments or changes. You are not alone in this journey, and we support you seeking help if and when you -- or someone you know -- notices a change in your thoughts and feelings. This is especially important to be on the lookout for postpartum, when a new mom may be susceptible to Postpartum Depression, Postpartum OCD, Postpartum Anxiety, and/or Postpartum Psychosis. Medications can be a life-saving necessity for some with mental illness, and others may wish to seek a holistic route -- or a blend. We support whatever form of treatment works for you, whether that means going to weekly therapy with a psychologist, taking meds prescribed by your licensed doctor or psychiatrist, changing your diet and lifestyle, or any combination. Disclaimer: Always seek medical advice from a board-certified therapist, psychiatrist, and/or physician before beginning any new treatment plan and deciding what approach to take on your mental health journey. Today, we are interviewing Kelly Brogan, M.D., a holistic psychiatrist who specializes in treating mental health through a natural approach. We know this route of treatment is not for everyone. We know meds save lives. We also know that there are potential ways to feel better outside of the traditional western medicine scope. We often second guess our choices as parents because we are told to do things in a certain way, even if those choices don't seem ideal for us. My guest today hopes to change this. She wants to inspire moms to make their own choices, not conform to societal or cultural norms, and to create a path that's authentic to their lives and identities. I'm super excited today to meet my guest Sri. She started a very cool website and podcast called Big Little Choices. It began with the intention of creating a space where women (especially moms) could share their choices without fearing judgment. There is no one right way to parent - whether it be how your kids eat, sleep, learn or play. It really comes down to what works for you and for your family. https://www.biglittlechoices.co The Empowered Mama is part of the Parents On Demand Network. As any new parent knows, there is an abundance of often-conflicting advice hurled at you from doctors, family, friends, and strangers on the internet. From the earliest days, parents get the message that they must make certain choices around feeding, sleep, and schedule or all will be lost. There's a rule—or three—for everything. But the benefits of these choices can be overstated, and the trade-offs can be profound. How do you make your own best decision? Emily Oster is my guest today. Her goal is to make you less confused, more confident and less judgmental of parents who make different choices. This is The Empowered Mama Podcast. This episode is brought to you by fit4mom. This episode could change your life. If you are craving calm, wanting to let go of stress, desiring to be more mindful in your day, listen in. I share a new approach, that's actually quite old, on how to do life and motherhood. This year, I have started to delve into a deeper understanding and practice. You might not realize but there are many different types of meditation. You can meditate with mantras, or envisioning a journey or anchoring around a sound. Right now, I have been studying zen meditation. Zen meditation is simply seated. upright in good posture, paying careful attention to breathing in your belly until you are fully alert and present. There are no steps, no-frills. In fact, meditating with a goal such as quieting your mind is very un zen. It's a state of mind of just being present in the moment. But today's podcast isn't about zen meditation. It's the zen part that I want to share with you. The more I read, the more I am feeling like there are ancient foundations behind what has been in my heart to share. A path to the direction that I've been pointing towards. Learning about zen is giving me words to something that has been growing inside of me. Today, I want to share with you a mindset that is truly changing my life. It's like a lightbulb going off. And I want to share that light with you This episode is brought to you by FIT4MOM. FIT4MOM is the company I started 17 years ago because I needed a village, a place to belong. You have heard of childcare. Even eldercare, but how about Mothercare? My guest today guides new and veteran mothers alike through the best practices to care for themselves as they care for their children. As a new mom, she would have described her entry to motherhood as a failure to thrive. her transition to maternal life was a messy, painful journey. But she found that the birth of a mother deserves to be tended to in much the same way as the birth of a baby, with attention, devotion and the deepest kind of love. This is The Empowered Mama Podcast. Dayna M. Kurtz's Favorite Quote: "In giving birth to our babies, we may find that we give birth to new possibilities within ourselves." Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn If Dayna Kurtz was to get a tattoo with one word that she valued, what would it be? Perhaps the word "Atman," a Sanksrit word meaning "inner self" or "soul." It's a reminder that we are something other than our work, our egos, our bodies. It's easy to get wrapped up in this transient elements, but they are just that--transient--whereas the "atman" is ever-lasting. There's comfort in that. “Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.” This is one of my favorite quotes from Gandhi. Let's focus on those first two sentences. “Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words. If this is true, then we should put great effort into training our thoughts and our words to create our destiny. I have been a self-development junkie for decades but the one thing I did not buy into were affirmations. In this episode, I will tell you why I changed my mind. If you find yourself running away from fear, you're running in the wrong direction. Fear demands that we move toward it, face it and hear its messages. When we fail to do this, the price is chronic anxiety, sleeplessness, damaged relationships, skyrocketing pharmaceutical use, and more. In her enlightening new book Joy from Fear, my guest explains that fear is not the enemy we thought it was; fear, when faced with awareness, is the powerful ally and best friend we all need. Episode Summary: So today’s show is going to be a little different than my others. I think a lot of you already know that my husband Joey and I are expecting our second little boy here any day now. I basically started working on this podcast right after I found out I was pregnant, so our little guy has been a huge part of this show… he’s literally been with me every second of it all. And now that his due date is approaching, I have a couple of announcements about the podcast and about the Working Parent Resource in general that I wanted to share with you. First of all, I wanted to let you guys know that I’m going to be taking a little Summer hiatus from the podcast so I can slow down a little and get into “momma mode," which means I won't be releasing any new episodes in June or July. I’ll definitely be back in August again with our normal weekly schedule, but I wanted to let you know there would be a gap in new episodes for a couple of months there. I actually have several interviews already recorded which I'm really excited to release, and I'll tell you more about some of those episodes coming up here in a few minutes. But once this baby arrives, I know there will be a lot of other things going on and I didn't want to be distracted from welcoming our little boy to the world and helping our son adjust to having a little brother and all of the other things that happen when you add a new baby to the family. So first and foremost, thanks to you all for being patient while I take this time for my family. In the meantime, we have a pretty awesome archive of episodes that you can go back and listen to if you haven't heard them yet. And since I know there are still some new listeners, I thought today I would talk a little about my top 5 episodes so far so you can go back and listen to those while I’m on this little baby/Summer hiatus. These are all ranked by the actual download numbers. So here are my top 5 episodes of the Working Parent Resource podcast so far – counting down from 5 to 1. Episode Summary: One of the things I hear most from working parents is that they feel a tremendous amount of guilt because they aren’t around their kids all week. They feel like “bad parents” because they’ve been led to believe that simply being physically present with their kids is what makes someone a good parent. I think logically we know this isn’t true, but it can absolutely FEEL true when you have very limited time with your kids. So today’s episode is all about building a strong, healthy and loving connection with your kids, even when you work all week. We’re going to talk about simple and practical strategies you can implement to increase your connection with your kids, even when you can’t always be physically present. I want you to leave this episode knowing how to make the most of the time you do have with your kids, not only so you can let go of those useless feelings of guilt, but also so you can enjoy a special and strong bond with your kids that will last over time. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: Surprising (and fun!) ways you can build your connection with your child. How our kids experience separation, and how we can minimize the meltdowns, anxiety, and acting out that can occur during our morning and evening routines. Our kids’ underlying developmental needs, and how we can meet those needs in even just a few minutes a day. Episode Summary: Today I’m talking to all of you over-achievers out there. You know who you are. You’re not just ambitious, you take ambition to a whole new level. You’re the one who can handle everything. You’re the person everyone comes to when they have a problem or need something or aren’t sure what to do. You’re the problem solver. You GET THINGS DONE and you get a lot of confidence from that. But as most of you know, there can be a downside to being an overachiever that many of us don’t really talk about. It can be stressful. It can be draining. We can very easily push ourselves beyond our limits and we’re highly susceptible to burnout as a result. And after we have kids, being an overachiever can get tricky really fast. So today I’m going to be talking about how to manage your inner-overachiever so you can find some peace in your life. I don’t necessarily think you need to abandon that inner-drive you have. But I do think there’s a way to manage it so it doesn’t drive you to unhealthy levels of stress and burnout. And that's what we'll talk about today. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: The main distinctions between a “High Achiever” and an “Overachiever” and how I have learned to identify the difference in my everyday life. What I got out of being an overachiever. What motivated me to continue working beyond my limits, and the reasons why it took me so long to realize how much stress and anxiety my high standards were creating in my life. How I finally let go of being an “Overachiever” and was able to harness my inner-drive in a healthier way while increasing my energy and results. How you can build check-points into your life so you can avoid falling into your natural tendency to push yourself too far. Episode Summary: Today I am going to be chatting with you a bit about my favorite productivity strategies and how I personally juggle all of the different things I’m doing these days. My goal with this episode is to not only inspire you to start integrating those things into your life that are really meaningful and will fulfill you – because I think we all really need that as working parents – but also to give you real strategies that you can apply to your own life that aren’t just going to distract you. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: The reason why I usually don’t like sharing “productivity hacks” and don’t put a whole lot of emphasis on them. How I Identify which goals are worth pursuing and which ones aren’t worth my time. How I set specific goals and outline a plan to achieve them. How I work through those moments when I’m not motivated to continue toward my goals. How I make sure I’m not sacrificing the things that are most important to me: specifically my health, my family, and my sanity. Episode Summary: In this episode we chat with Chuck Starnes who is a marriage coach in San Jose, California. Chuck and I really dive deep on one of the topics that I know so many of you really struggle with: how to stay connected with your spouse when you’re raising a family and managing your career and running a household… there are just so many things that can pull us off track in our relationship, and Chuck’s advice and insights are so on point. In this episode we talk a lot about why conflict doesn’t have to be a bad thing in your relationship, and in fact, why experiencing conflict in your relationship really means you’re probably with the perfect person. We also dive into some specific tools couples can use to re-connect if they’ve been feeling distant or if they’ve been bickering with each other more than usual. And we’ll talk about how we can look deeper at what we’re fighting about to REALLY grow as individuals and to strengthen our marriage. Chuck Starnes has a Master’s degree from Pepperdine University and over 20 years of experience in pastoral counseling working with marriages. His marriage coaching has been highly effective in helping couples reconnect and restore intimacy in their relationship. He and his wife Sandy have been married for 36 years, have two daughters and two grandchildren, and live in San Jose, California. Chuck is also a member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: We chat about some of the hidden reasons why couples fight, especially after they become parents. The things we tend to attribute to our marital discourse aren’t usually the REAL problems that needs to be solved. We discuss the deeper, subconscious reasons why we encounter conflict with our partners, and how we can start to use those times of conflict to re-connect and become stronger individually. Chuck shares specific tools we can use to “baby-proof” our relationship. Episode Summary: I could just talk to our guest today, Monica Froese, forever. She is honestly a reservoir of helpful information and a pioneer who’s doing what she can to help working families create more balanced and less stressful lives. She’s a working mom herself who’s felt the exhaustion and the frustration, and decided to take matters into her own hands to start a productive conversation to begin changing things for the better (a girl after my own heart!). I truly enjoyed this conversation, and love the message she’s spreading. Monica Froese is a mom, wife, author and business strategist for mom entrepreneurs. She has an MBA degree in Finance and Marketing and blogs at www.RedefiningMom.com, a site for empowering working moms. In 2015, she traveled to the White House to discuss family-friendly workplace policies with President Obama’s senior advisors and has been featured on several media outlets including Fox News, Scary Mommy, Healthline, and Mom Talk Radio. Her passion is to help other moms find their version of balance through time management tips, flexible work options, and helping women build online businesses to escape the 9-5. Her new eBook, “Busy Moms Building: 12 Steps to Running Your Own Online Business for Busy Moms,” helps moms start their own online businesses in just 45 days. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: How to process those overwhelming emotions that come up when you return to work after having your baby. How to deal with the judgment we face when we become a working parent, and standing up to the expectations of others that we stay home with our kids. Learn about the conversations they’re having in Washington around the struggles facing working families, including maternity leave laws, managing your packed (and often inflexible work) schedule, childcare expenses, etc. Show Notes: http://WorkingParentResource.com/9 Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode: Monica Froese Website Monica Froese Facebook Monica Froese Instagram Monica Froese LinkedIn Monica Froese Pinterest Monica Froese Twitter Monica Froese Google+ Flexjobs.com Maybrooks.com Working Moms Against Guilt Working Parent Resource Website Facebook Community About the Working Parent Resource: The Working Parent Resource is dedicated to helping ambitious working parents acquire the information, insights, and tools they need to create a more intentional and fulfilling life that reflects their deepest values and priorities. Episode Summary: This episode is one of my “Moments of Truth” episodes, where I describe one of those pivotal moments in my life where my perspective permanently changed. As we all know, hindsight can be 20/20, and when I look back on my life I’m able to identify some of these moments where everything I had thought was true, ended up not really fitting for me anymore… these are some of the moments in my life where I changed as a person and my perspective shifted for the better. In this episode we’ll be talking about the moment I realized what being a parent really means to me. We all become a parent the day our first child joins our family. But it took me a little time to realize what taking on that role would really mean in my life. So today I want to go through the process I went through, some of the discoveries I made about myself and about my role as a parent, and I’ll talk a bit about how this shift in my perspective really changed the way I approached being a parent forever. This was my experience, so this may or may not apply to you. But I like to share these things in case you can relate and can take away some new insights for yourself. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: You’ll hear my personal story of feeling like a complete failure early in my parenting journey. I share the “Aha Moment” that changed how I felt about my role as a parent, and forever shifted the way I interact with my son. You’ll hear my biggest takeaways as a result from this painful period of my life. Episode Summary: In this episode we talk about finding strength and identity in those tough moments of parenthood, and goodness knows we have plenty of those as working parents right? I loved this conversation with our guest Becky Burgess. I had so many questions prepared for her, and I didn't touch on most of them because our conversation just flowed so organically in wonderful directions. I loved the vulnerability and the heart and the wisdom that Becky shared with us today, and I hope you do too! Becky Burgess is a mother of two and a wife to her high school sweetheart. She owns a social media marketing company, Splash Owl Media. When she was pregnant with her first baby, she decided she wanted to have an all-natural childbirth, and she had both of her children via water-birth at a birthing center. After a series of difficult personal events including getting fired from her job during her maternity leave and dealing with postpartum depression, she started seeing a therapist and was finally able to set some much-needed boundaries, manage her postpartum depression, and find love in the little moments. As she calls it, she "redefined herself." What You’ll Learn in This Episode: Becky shares her personal experience into parenthood, and how becoming a parent helped her become crystal clear about WHO she really is, and what she really wanted out of her life. We also chat about the struggles that come with constantly adapting to our kids' changing schedules and needs. We talk about how we shut out all of the judgments and advice and tap into our own instincts about the best way to be a parent in our own, unique lives (and how we can keep our own judgments in check). Episode Summary: This episode is actually a panel, where two guests and I do a roundtable discussion of our topic, “Are you really screwing up your kids (and how to know for sure).” Before I even started this podcast, I knew I’d be doing at least some of these panels, because I think so many of the conversations we have as working parents have many different perspectives, and I want to reflect that in the conversations we have here on the show. I want the Working Parent Resource platform to reflect the reality of the situations we face, because so much of what’s written out there is so opinionated and judgmental and doesn’t really provide the full picture. That nuance really seems to be lacking in what I consume about parenting and balancing work and family and all of the rest of it, so these panel discussions are my effort give a more realistic sense of the topics we’re exploring. In this particular episode, my goal is to help you start distinguishing between the things that may be causing unnecessary stress in your life, and which things you may want to pay some more attention to. We really do already have enough pressure on us as parents… hopefully this conversation can help alleviate at least some of that in your life. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: A few of the most common things we seem to worry about as parents that really aren’t going to harm our child in the long run. Which things we’re not paying much attention to that really could cause some long-term emotional or mental damage to our kids. We challenge some of the most stress-inducing expectations of working parents. Along the way, she authored a highly reviewed book, “Meditations for Mamas: You Deserve to Feel Good,” and offers nurturing coaching programs to empower new mamas to thrive in their bodies, relationships, and identities throughout the 4th Trimester and beyond. Our show today is all about finding yourself again after becoming a parent, and we dive specifically into the challenges and struggles that can come up for moms during that postpartum phase of parenthood. Judy is an expert on helping new moms integrate who they used to be before having kids into who they are becoming after they have a new baby. What You’ll Learn in This Episode: You’ll hear a very honest and vulnerable account of our guest’s journey into parenthood, including her struggles with postpartum depression, finding her own identity after a lifetime of being on her own, and how she was able to grow through the transition. We talk about how our relationships can change with others when we become parents.
