Marnel Niles Goins is the Dean in the College of Sciences and Humanities at Marymount University in Arlington, VA. Prior to this appointment, she was Professor of Communication at California State University, Fresno for 12 years. She is a native of Philadelphia, PA. She earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Communication and Culture at Howard University in Washington, DC and her BA from the Department of Communication at Oakwood College in Huntsville, AL. She taught courses in Small Group Communication and Organizational Communication and has a special interest in gender and racial dynamics in organizational settings. At Marymount, a number of new academic programs have been developed under Marnel's leadership, including a graduate certificate program for Ethics and Leadership in Criminal Justice, which launched in the Fall 2021 semester, and a B.S. in Engineering. Also new is the 4+1 M.A. in English program, which enables students to earn a B.A. in Literature & Languages or Digital Writing & Narrative Design and a M.A. in English & Humanities over five years of study at Marymount. This program facilitates a student's transition from a broad-based liberal arts B.A. into a flexible, customizable and interdisciplinary M.A. program that concludes with a thesis or an advanced internship practicum that addresses the student's professional goals. Marnel has several books, book chapters, and articles published in the Communication discipline She is co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Gender and Communication and Still Searching for Our Mothers' Gardens: Experiences of New Tenure-Track Women of Color in ‘Majority' Institutions. She has articles published in Communication Studies, Women & Language, and The Alliance of Black School Educators, in addition to book chapters published in Let's Communicate and the Routledge Handbook of Applied Communication Research. She has presented papers and panels at a number of conferences, including the National Communication Association convention, Western States Communication Association convention, and Eastern Communication Association convention. Marnel is President of the Western States Communication Association. She is the former President of the Organization for Research on Women and Communication, a former member of the National Communication Association's Executive Committee, past Chair of the National Communication Association's Black Caucus, and former Secretary of the National Communication Association's Group Communication Division.

Dr. Brandon Gamble received his training in psychology from Oakwood College for his Bachelor's degree, San Diego State for his Master's degree, and the University of Southern California is where he earned his Doctoral degree in Educational Psychology. From 1998 to 2009, he served middle and high school students as a school psychologist in the Long Beach Unified School District before becoming an associate professor at Cal State University Long Beach, in the College of Education for the Educational Psychology program from 2007 to 2018. He has had the honor to serve as the adviser for the Black Student Union at CSULB. Also, from 2018-2021, he has was at his undergraduate alma mater to serve as the Dean of Student Success at Oakwood University in Huntsville, AL. Currently, he serves as the Charles Bell Faculty Scholar at the Black Resource Center at San Diego State University. Dr. Gamble's written work and research has focused on African American male's social capital and familial support networks that empower young men to succeed in academics. For his dissertation titled, Social capital networks of institutional agents and the empowerment of African American youth, he interviewed Guide Right program leaders for Kappa League and the African Male Achievers' Network, which are a part of the youth programs of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc. He has presented at national and international conferences regarding disproportional placements of minorities in special education, access to quality mental health care in schools, African American student achievement, and Mediated Learning Experiences. From 2012 to 2013 he served as President of the California Association of School Psychologists. He also served as the Western Regional representative of the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) from 2016-2017. From 2013 to 2018, he was the liaison of the ABPsi the to CASP. Dr. Gamble also served as the Co-Chair of Leadership Development for the ABPsi in 2020. He has served his fraternity's chapter as the Guide Right Director for your program for Kappa from 2001-2003 and again from 2017 to 2018. He has also served on the national Guide Right sub-committee for mental health for the fraternity. Dr. Gamble enjoys spending time with his family, martial arts, playing guitar, and surfing, which are all the things he dreamed of doing as a young man growing up in Southern California. He hopes to help you reach your dreams and beyond. My guest today was Born and raised in Montreal Canada, shortly after her birth Cheryl was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia, a painful and chronic illness. The Doctors told her parents to prepare for her funeral, because she would not live to see her 2nd birthday. However, Cheryl's parents dedicated her to the Lord, believing that “with God all things are possible!” Although she has spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital and continues to struggle with this illness, Praise God she has beat the doctor's prognosis. Cheryl graduated from Dawson College, in Montreal, with an Associate's degree and moved to the United States to attend Oakwood College (now University), where she completed a Bachelor of Social Work. She has been blessed to obtain two Master's Degrees in Addiction and Professional Counseling and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis on Behavioral Health. She has had a lengthy career in child welfare and currently works in the Special Victims Unit as Domestic Violence Specialist for the Newport News Police Department. An active member of her community, she is a member of the Newport News Domestic Violence Taskforce, Hampton Sentara Care-plex Hospital Ethics and Grievance Committees and Patient and Family Advisory Board, and serves on the Executive Committees for Allegheny East Conference and Columbia Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Cheryl has been married for 15 years to Micah Chavezs who is gifted in ministry and music. They have a 12-year-old daughter named, Maylin. Cheryl & Micah have co-authored the inspirational book Your Rejection God's Protection; a Unique Biblical Approach to Understanding Adversity. The Chavers family, are active members of the Calvary Seventh-day Adventist church in Newport News, Virginia, where Cheryl is an ordained Elder. They are strong advocates and supporters of Adventist Christian education and healthy families. Cheryl loves to sing, preach and facilitate empowerment workshops. Although she lives with a chronic illness and experiences pain every day, Cheryl's entire life is a testimony about what “GOD CAN DO”, versus the pronouncement of men. Claude V. McKnight, III is a Jazz, R&B, and Gospel Music Singer, as well as the founding member of the award-winning a cappella performing group Take 6. Claude was born on October 2, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York to Claude Jr. and Elaine. He was the oldest of four boys (the others being Fred, Mike, and Brian). He lived and grew up primarily in Buffalo and Orlando. He received his earliest musical influences in Buffalo, mostly from his grandfather, Fred Willis Sr., who was the choir director at his church. His earliest musical memories are from going to rehearsal with his mom every Friday night. He was able to learn parts and harmonize and see how his grandfather was able to lead a group of people. While in fourth grade, McKnight decided that he would learn to play the trombone, although he found it cumbersome. Playing the trombone, however, enabled him to start training his ear for his future musical career. He played trombone throughout high school, and after his sophomore year, his family moved to Orlando, Florida, where he continued to play and sing in the chorus. At that time, one of his goals was to play in the Tonight Show band with Doc Severinson. McKnight also played basketball in school, and upon graduation had to make the choice of going to school to play ball, or to pursue music. Instead, he chose to attend Oakwood College, his parents' alma mater, despite the college not being known for its music or athletic programs at that time. His youngest brother Brian is also a musician. One of the first things he did during his freshman year was to put together a freshman quartet, singing mostly barbershop style harmonies. A story goes that Mark Kibble came into a bathroom where they were rehearsing and added a fifth part to what they were doing, and subsequently joined the group. From there, Mervyn Warren joined the group, making it a sextet. Over the years, people came and went from the group as students graduated, but from 1985 the group has had primarily the same lineup, apart from Joey Kibble replacing Mervyn Warren in 1991. In addition to starting Take 6, he has also been involved in producing, writing, and doing voice-over work.

Roger R. Wade was born on the island of Trinidad in the West Indies. He was educated in Trinidad, New York, Maryland, and Oakwood College (now University) in Huntsville Alabama. Roger R. Wade has a passion for the church's most precious resource --- the youth. He has worked in Youth Ministries for the past 40 years leading out as AY leader to Union Youth Director and served as the first Director of the National Black Youth Resource Center, which was on the campus of Oakwood College (now University) in Huntsville, Alabama. Since his call to the organized church in 1998, Roger R. Wade has served the Northeastern Conference, the Southern California, the Southwest Region Conference, the South Central Conference; and as of April 1, 2019, he began serving as the Church Ministries Director of the Mid-America Union Conference. In July of 2003, Pastor Roger R. Wade was duly ordained to the work of the gospel ministry. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, God has used him to date to baptize over 850 persons. Roger R. Wade has written many articles; travels preaching and conducting seminars and workshops; serves as a consultant to the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventist Youth Ministries Department and the Black Adventist Youth Directors' Association (BAYDA); produced and coordinator for the first ever Young Adult Initiative – Genesis 2000 Satellite New Years Eve Broadcast, volunteered at the National Pathfinder Camporees held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin; served as Camporee Director for the BAYDA's Knowin' Him Pathfinder Camporee; served as producer for many large youth events; and volunteered on numerous community Board of Directors. Intro: Krista Cooper PhD, LLMSW is a native of Hartford, CT, of Jamaican heritage. she attended Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama where her love of languages and the written word resulted in a change of major from Pre-Med to English and Spanish. While at Oakwood, she also studied for a year at Colegio Adventista de Sagunto, Spain. After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Spanish, Dr. Cooper obtained her Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan. After graduation, she worked as an Intake and Assessment Social Worker in the Children and Families Division as well as working as a Substance Misuse social worker in the United Kingdom. Other areas of work experience include geriatric populations and mental health work with children and adults. In 2012, prior to the completion of her doctoral studies, Dr. Cooper accepted an Assistant Professor of Social Work position at Andrews University. While there and completing her dissertation, she began experiencing several health and life challenges related to uterine fibroids. This sparked an interest in exploring in more depth the experiences of women living with reproductive health challenges. Upon completion of her doctoral studies in 2014, and her own subsequent healing process, Dr. Cooper applied for a grant that would allow her to explore the aforementioned area. She was granted funding for research entitled, ‘Identity and Experience: The Lives of Women Living with Symptomatic Uterine Fibroids.’ Results from the study and its focus on individual story prompted her to start Reproductively Yours LLC which focuses on reducing the stigma associated with women’s reproductive narratives through education, story work, creativity and community building. Her greatest desire is for women that currently live or have lived with reproductive health challenges to know that they are not alone. Welcome to the show Dr. Cooper! I was intrigued by the list of people and issues you wanted to or have researched. Researches reproductive issues-- Afro Caribbean women living with HIV Being a woman Being an immigrant Being a black female immigrant Majority of women she interviews are Jamaican or Trinidadian Do these subject matters, issues all tie together? How? So, let’s talk about something we and many of our listeners know so much about, fibroids. We talked about our horrific experiences with fibroids, being in the car or out and having accidents, iron so low it was difficult for you to breathe, needing to have IV iron all dealing with this with no family around nearby, no real support system, then finding out after graduating college that early menopause had set in... Getting to be able to speak with other women who were going through the same things with fibroids, hysterectomy. So you got a grant through your college to research women who are dealing with these issues. During your research, qualitative research, you realized you were also researching yourself! She was having difficulties, feeling tired and worn out, and realized it was because the content was so close to home, she ended up allowing a friend to interview her and that was when everything started to fall into place. On June 27, 2003, Rear Admiral Barry C. Black (Ret.) was elected the 62nd Chaplain of the United States Senate. He began working in the Senate on July 7, 2003. Prior to coming to Capitol Hill, Chaplain Black served in the U.S. Navy for over twenty-seven years, ending his distinguished career as the Chief of Navy Chaplains. The Senate elected its first chaplain in 1789.Commissioned as a Navy Chaplain in 1976, Chaplain Black’s first duty station was the Fleet Religious Support Activity in Norfolk, Virginia. In this episode, we interview and highlight Chrystelle L. Vilfranc. She shares how she went from wanting to go to medical school to find her calling in research. She tells us about her journey to her to a Ph.D. program and gives insight into how she remains mentally healthy while getting her degree. Chrystelle is a Ph.D. candidate studying cancer and cell biology. She went to Oakwood College and got her bachelor's degree in biochemistry and mathematics. Her specific areas of research include liver injury, hepatocellular carcinoma, and DNA damage and response. The specific focus of her project involves the use of a mutant mouse model to understand novel roles of DNA damage repair and response pathways in the regulation and protection against acute and chronic liver disease, including hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer. She has a recent publication related to this work. Chrystelle hopes to provide new knowledge for understanding liver tumor initiation and progression as well as providing new information on how a DNA damage response protein can potentially be a target for potential cancer therapeutics. Apart from her work in the lab, Chrystelle serves as the digital curator for @VanguardSTEM. Being passionate about mental health and mental well-being she started a writing series in collaboration with #VanguardSTEM, known as #RevealToHeal (found on Medium). Richard Pinder is a retired assistant professor of history at Johnson & Wales University. Richard taught courses on world history, leadership, religion and civil rights. He has presented extensively on the civil rights legislation. Richard taught in the Michigan and Florida public school systems before relocating to North Carolina.
