Thundering Legion Podcast: Armed Forces Members United In Christ
https://linktr.ee/thunderinglegion Today we interview Air Force Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) William “Buck” Buckingham who throughout his career flew the C-17 Spec Ops, C-130J initial cadre, C-32 (Boeing 757) at the 89th Air Wing. Episode Notes: Background: Navy Enlisted 1990, Embry Riddle AFROTC, Laughlin Pilot Training, C-17 Spec Ops & Weapons School, CJSC, ACSC Testimony: Refining process in bootcamp. Personal encounter with God (through Gideon Bible on aircraft carrier) in April 1992 then whole family came to Christ after him. Deviated from faith during Air Force career and went through a divorce and came back to place of repentance. Successes and failures: Parallels between teaching and applying the Word and instructing in aviation. Personal trauma with older daughter after divorce. Must trust God in the brokenness in family. Lots of alcohol consumption while traveling on high-dollar accounts. When we gain success and power by God's grace, we tend to become prideful. Became distracted by work and began drinking to numb marital challenges at home. Broke down in 2015 when daughter alienated by fallout of divorce. Calling: We were created for one purpose: worship. We get worship wrong which lead to all kinds of consequences. Called to ministry to trauma cases. People who are contrite in heart are closer to God than those who are self-righteous (the Pharisees). Psalm 51:17. Secular counseling programs don't go deep enough to really deal with the heart issues underlying addiction. Core issue of addiction was that God was not #1. Favorite Books of the Bible: Philippians 2:12 work out salvation in fear and trembling, because God is working through us for His joy. Daily Spiritual Growth: 0400 reading Bible for 2 hours. Need quiet in the mornings: Lamentations 3:23. Spiritual experience to wake up unhurried early and see creation anticipate dawn. Becoming Biblically literate with “spiritual breakfast” Advice: Look to warriors of the faith like Joshua. Seek the Lord daily. God's people are all over the world and He has us in our current position for a purpose. Be focused on where you are at the time. Be the change. Don't get pulled into the distraction. Our purpose in life is to worship God first and foremost. God' word will help us live our best life. Contact Buck: jherc06@gmail.com Reflect: What does this episode reveal about God's character? Crime fighter Ian Cameron of the Democratic Alliance (DA) exposes the horrific working conditions in the South African Police Services (SAPS) as yet another member is shot dead on duty with his own gun - this time after the retention cord from the State-issued holster broke. In this interview with BizNews, Cameron reveals a litany of operational issues following the killing: those in the Air Wing helicopter had no proper radio communication with police on the ground; the police drones took over four hours to arrive on the crime scene; most of the cops searching for the police officer's killer didn't have torches; there was no Joint Operations Centre or even an operational plan; and the incident commander sent away specialised units because there were “too many people”. Last year (2023), in just three months from July to September, a total of 35 cops were killed - more than 10 a month. Cameron urges South Africans to honour the “large majority” of police officers “still willing to offer their lives for us at any given moment”. Welcome to the seventy-second episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit show! I'm your host Mark Hasara, former KC-135 pilot and aviation geek! My wife Valerie and I attended Air Mobility Command's Airlift Tanker Association 2023 Symposium at the Gaylord Texan resort in Grapevine Texas. The A/TA Convention aero and cyberspace Industry Exposition was fantastic and I wanted to mention a few things I experienced while walking the Industry Floor... like the Remote Vision System 2.0 now being retrofitted in the Boeing KC-46 Pegasus tanker. General Mike Minihan, commander of Air Moility Command gavve an incredile speech on the status of the Mobility Air Forces or MAF. Did you know airlifters now have the capaility to become strike aircraft with new palletized weapons systems? The Lessons from the Cockpit show is supported by the ook Tanker Pilot, now on Genneral Mike Minihan's Leadership Library reading list. Tanker Pilot gives you a behind the scenes look at the planning and execution of air refueling operations during four wars and numerous other global evvents. Thirty-two pictures taken are included, taken during the events descibed in the book. Our show is also supported by Wall Pilot, custom aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger. There are 138 Ready-to-Print extremely detailed and exhaustively researched aircraft profiles of famous aircraft from World War II to modern fifth generation fighters and bombers. Wall Pilot creates custom aircraft profile drawings of your favorite aircraft with your name, tail number, flying unit, and weapons load in four, six, and eight foot long vinyl prints you can peel off and stick on any flat purpose. One of the aircraft profiles auctioned off for the A/TA Scholarship fund was this 60th Air Mobility Wing KC-10A Extender from Travis Air Force Base. Aircrews, maintainers, and loaders signed a copy of this print for auction which was sold to a collector of custom aviation art. The other aircraft profile auctioned off for the A/TA Scholarship fund was the 437th Airlift Wing C-17A Globemaster III named "Spirit of the Candy Bomber" in memorial of Colonel Gail Halvorsen, the Berlin Candy Bomber who passed away at the age of 101 last year. General Mike Minihan attended the memorial service for Colonel Halvorsen last summer to rename C-17A tail 87-7178 "Spirit of the Candy Bomber". General Mike Minihan was the previous commander of the 19th Airlift Wing located at Little Rock Air Force Base Arkansas. This C-130J is assigned to the Air Force Reserve Component based at Little Rock AFB. The best assignement of my Air Force career was flying with the 909th Air Refueling Squadron out of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa Japan. The 909th flew both KC-135A and -135R Models while I was assigned to the unit for five years in 1990 through 1995. Attending Tailhook 23 this past August I brought this F-14D Tomcat print of BANDWAGON 101, the VF-31 Squadron Skipper Commander Paul Haas personal jet he flew during Operation Iraqi Freedom's Shock and Awe air campaign. My very good friend Captain Steve "Moose" Laukaitis was the Deputy Carrier Air Wing Commander of CAG Eight during the Shock and Awe air campaign and this was the VFA-87 War Party F-18C+ Hornet in his Air Wing on USS Theodore Roosevelt. Welcome to the sixty-eighth episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast with your host, retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and KC-135 pilot Mark Hasara. Ever since hearing and reading this story, I wanted to have this incredible Iranian Air Force fighter pilot on the show! Colonel Fred Izadseta has commanded at all levels; from Squadron to Wing Commander. He's flown some of the most iconic fighters in the world... F-86 Sabers with the Iranian Precision Demonstration Team Golden Crown to commanding an Air Wing, and teaching in their pilot pipeline. What will strike you most about his lessons learned and exploits are planning and executing one of the longest F-4E Phantom II air strikes in history, the strike package flying behind their 747 airborne tanker refueling at 300 feet in altitude moving at 400 knots through the Cilo-Sat Mountains of southeastern Turkey! This episode is supported by Colonel Fred's book Immortals of the Sky, telling his experiences as a fighter pilot in Sabers and Phantoms. Working with Farshid Moussavi he tells the story of the Iran Air Force build-up in the 1960s and 70s and its near destruction during the Revolution. This is one of those books you've never heard about but won't be able to put down once started. The Lessons from the Cockpit podcast is also supported by Wall Pilot, custom aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger. Wall Pilot offers extremely detailed profile illustrations of famous aircraft printed on vinyl four, six, and eight feet long you can peel them off and stick them to any flat surface. This F-4E Phantom II nicknamed Diane flew with the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing during the air campaign over Vietnam. The jet is loaded with cluster bombs performing the "Hunter-Killer" role for hunting SAM sites. This famous F-4D from the 555th Tac Fighter Squadron "Triple Nickel" is credited with 6 confirmed MiG kills over Vietnam, twice with Captain Steve Ritchie and Chuck DeBellvue flying the jet during their MiG Sweep missions. The 3rd Tac Fighter Squadron Peugeots were stationed at Clark Air Base in The Philippines and won the 1989 Gun Smoke Competition just before deploying to Incirlik Air Base Turkey to fly missions in Operation Desert Storm. The Story Shared: Cameron Hardiman detailed a story of a time when a rescue attempt nearly killed him. Whilst hanging from a helicopter in 40+ knots of wind and 50-foot high waves, Cameron was taken under by the giant wave. He was trying to save a sailor whose vessel was stricken by the severe weather, but he almost lost his life. This experience may not have killed him, but it changed his life forever. About Cameron Hardiman: As a member of Victoria Police's Air Wing, Cameron Hardiman felt like he was ten feet tall and bulletproof. The air wing brought him plenty of excitement and drama - from searching for missing aircraft to accidentally discovering marijuana crops to working with paramedics. But it also brought him plenty of trauma ... He saw his fair share of trauma and dealt with it like most coppers would: he quickly put each dangerous job out of his mind as soon as it was over. But one particular rescue in Bass Strait brought about a reckoning - and Cameron was never the same again. Career Highlights: → Victorian Rescue Helicopter as a Policeman. → Australian Federal Police. → A distinguished police officer. Expertise: → Dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. → Inspirational speaker and presenter. → Active promotor for improved mental health for all emergency service workers. For more read Cameron's book - 10 feet tall and not quite bulletproof. Follow me on Instagram and YouTube. For more, go to https://www.paramedicmindset.com.au/ Music by Ehrling Music.

Dr. Marisa Porges is mother to one fantastic son and is the eighth head of the 130-year-old, all-girls Baldwin School, outside of Philadelphia. The school is renowned for academic excellence and for preparing girls to be leaders and change-makers. This puts her in charge of helping to raise 600 girls, ages four to 18. Marisa attended the Baldwin School herself and after graduating from Harvard University, she fulfilled her childhood dream of flying jets for the U.S Navy as one of eight female aviators in an Air Wing of 200. Marisa served in the Obama White House as a cybersecurity advisor and was a visiting fellow at Harvard Kennedy School and the Council of Foreign Relations where her research focused on worldwide counter terrorism efforts. She joins us on Parenting for the Future to discuss her new book, "What Girls Need: How to Raise Bold, Courageous and Resilient Women”, which was inspired by the young woman at Baldwin. The book explores the old and new challenges girls face in today's world from sexism, sexual harassment and the gender pay gap, to the need to confidently use their own voice in the workplace and ensure equity in their own homes.
There's no one in this world that I respect more than Jack Ramson. He currently serves as a USMC First Sergeant with the NWSS Unit for the Air Wing. I first met Jack at tank school in Fort Knox, Kentucky where he was one of my instructors. After deploying in Afghanistan as a Tank Platoon Commander, Jack eventually joined my platoon serving his last combat deployment as my wingman. Words cannot describe what this man means to me, or how grateful I am to have served with him. In this episode, Jack and I discuss the ins and outs of the M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank, the history of tanks, our thoughts on the Marine Corps getting rid of their tank battalions, all while applying some lesson we learned as tankers to hunting.

Pride in military service runs deep in many families. Sometimes that pride runs right through a particular branch of the military. Today I would like to salute a Marine who is the latest in a LONG line of Marines. Today we are Saluting Lance Corporal Dade Newell Jr. of the United States Marine Corps. Dade Newell Sr. actually wrote me a few months ago, not to tell me all about his son, but to ask if I knew if a certain artist had any plans to join a USO tour in Okinawa, Japan. His son Dade Jr. is stationed there, and this artist is his favorite. Lance Corporal Newell is an "I" Level Airframes mechanic. He's actually stationed in Iwakuni, Japan and this is his first permanent duty station after he completed his training stateside. Dad says he wishes his son could have stationed somewhere closer to home for his first duty, but he absolutely understands the need to go where the Corps needs you. Dade Newell Sr. understands the Corps because he was ALSO a Marine, who ALSO served in the Air Wing. And what's even cooler than that is that his father was ALSO a Marine, and he ALSO served in the Air Wing. That makes Lance Corporal Dade Newell Jr. the third generation of Father-Son Air Wing Marines: a really strong family tradition of service. For continuing the family service, and for keeping those aircraft in the sky to protect us, today we salute Lance Corporal Dade Newell Jr. of the United States Marine Corps.
