In the 1898, a British estate manager, William C Peppé dug up a Buddhist Stupa at Piprahwa and stumbled upon a soapstone casket containing relics of Gautama Buddha and a cache of precious gems, which may have been weaved into a necklace or some other form of jewellery, as part of the offerings. More than a century later, a controversy surrounds these gemstones as the heir of Peppe moves to auction them at Sotheby's. India pointed out that even if the colonial government of that time gave custodianship to William Peppé, his descendants had no legal grounds to sell the relics. https://theprint.in/opinion/buddhas-gems-at-sothebys-shows-indian-govt-doesnt-have-an-eye-on-colonial-loot/2622708/
Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha (“the awakened one”), was a spiritual teacher who founded Buddhism in the 5th or 6th century BCE in South Asia. His core teachings include the Middle Way, the Four Noble Truths, and the Noble Eightfold Path, emphasizing mindfulness, ethics, and liberation from suffering.
What happens when you sit in complete silence for 10 days—no talking, no technology, no eye contact, no distractions? In this episode, I take you inside my Vipassana meditation retreat, where I spent over 100 hours in silence and came face-to-face with my mind in ways I never expected. From nearly having a panic attack on Day 4, to watching a cobra almost kill my neighbor, to a tiny fly teaching me a profound lesson on suffering—this experience rewired my brain, changed how I see technology, and redefined what it means to be human in the modern world. What Is Vipassana Meditation? Vipassana, which means “insight” or “clear-seeing,” is one of the oldest meditation techniques in the world. Rooted in the teachings of Gautama Buddha, it's designed to cultivate awareness, equanimity, and liberation from suffering. During the retreat, I followed the traditional Vipassana rules, including: Noble Silence – No speaking, no eye contact, no gestures. No technology – No phones, books, or journaling. No intoxicants or distractions – Just meditation, walking, and sitting. Complete surrender to the schedule – Wake-up bells at 4 AM, over 10 hours of meditation per day. But what I thought would be a peaceful experience turned into one of the hardest things I've ever done. This episode is an invitation to slow down, unplug, and reconnect with yourself in ways you never imagined. Would you ever try Vipassana? Listen now and decide for yourself.

A reading of excerpts taken from Chapter 1 of The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra - translated by Suzuki and Goddard. The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra was first translated into Chinese in the 5th century and has been the subject of many treatises and commentaries. It is a distinctive and influential philosophical discourse in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. The sutra recounts a teaching primarily between Gautama Buddha and a bodhisattva named Mahāmati ("Great Wisdom"). The sūtra is set in mythical Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa, the king of the rākṣasas. The Laṅkāvatāra discusses numerous Mahayana topics, such as Yogācāra philosophy of mind-only (cittamātra) and the three natures, the ālayavijñāna (store-house consciousness), the inner "disposition" (gotra), the buddha-nature, the luminous mind (prabhāsvaracitta), emptiness (śūnyatā) and vegetarianism. It is also notably an important sūtra in Zen Buddhism, as it discusses the key issue of "sudden enlightenment".
In a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, the ancient teachings of the Four Noble Truths offer a timeless wisdom that resonates with the human experience across cultures and generations. Rooted in the teachings of Gautama Buddha, these truths provide a profound framework for understanding and addressing the fundamental nature of suffering and the path to liberation. Let's explore the relevance of the Four Noble Truths in today's world and how we can incorporate their principles into our daily lives for greater wellbeing and inner peace. “Pain in life is inevitable, but suffering is not. Pain is what the world does to you. Suffering is what you do to yourself. Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” Gautama Buddha I am thrilled to announce that our new book, the Kindness Daily Reader: Season One, will be available from July 1, 2024. Secondly, we are embarking on a new chapter with Season Three of the One Kind Moment podcast. In Season One, we primarily focused on broad topics of kindness and compassion, while in Season Two, we explored areas such as self-compassion, self-help, and self-care. Now, in Season Three, we're shifting our focus to a specific area of self-care that we call Practical Spirituality for Everyone. We'll be delving into topics like spirituality in nature, spiritual intelligence, everyday mindfulness, the science of consciousness, the mystery of life, the science of awe, and managing uncertainty. We're excited to take this new direction and are grateful for your continued support and interest in the One Kind Moment podcast. #onekindmoment #practicalspirituality #resilience Yesterday by John Hobart - Music Design by Jason Inc. https://brucewaynemclellan.com/

A reading for meditation of the Upajjhaṭṭhana Sutta (AN 5:57) ~ Subjects for Contemplation - Translated by Bhikkhu Bodhi. The Upajjhatthana Sutta ("Subjects for Contemplation") focuses on the five remembrances, or five facts, regarding life's fragility and our true inheritance. The discourse advises that these facts are to be reflected upon often by all. Contemplation of these facts leads to the abandonment of destructive attachments and actions and to the cultivation of factors necessary for Awakening. The first three remembrances are the very insights that led Gautama Buddha to renounce his royal household status and become an ascetic after experiencing strong feelings of spiritual urgency (saṃvega).
Vishvapani traces his own relationship to the Buddha, from early family connections arising out of the turmoil of war to his experience of writing the book itself. In doing so he explores the tricky work of trying to engage with the imagination constrained and disciplined by the historical evidence. What emerges from his work with the Pali texts is a portrait of the Buddha and his world where it's impossible to miss the vital sense of a man questing for a coherent vision of reality. From the talk entitled Imagining Gautama given at the Cardiff Buddhist Centre, 2011, as part of the series Gautama Buddha on the occasion of launching of his book: 'Gautama Buddha: The Life and Teachings of the Awakened One' (Quercus, 2011). *** Subscribe to our Dharmabytes podcast: On Apple Podcasts | On Spotify | On Google Podcasts Bite-sized inspiration three times every week. Bringing a much needed calming zen influence to the Vayse Institute of Over Thinking and Catastrophic Worry, Hine and Buckley welcome therapist and former Tibetan Buddhist monk, Roger Jayamanne to the podcast. Roger leads Hine and Buckley through a quest which is thousands of years and many life cycles old as they discuss his life within the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and what it actually teaches: was the Buddha a real person? Is life just sorrow and suffering? What is the Tao?... and he divulges some of the weirder, reality-defying experiences he has had on his travels including mind reading, a monk's arm stretching to six feet long and a lama summoning a parliament of owls as a spiritual escort to Edinburgh Airport... (recorded 13 November 2023) Thanks to Roger for putting up with our frenzied anxiety and thanks as always to Keith for the show notes. The Anattalakkhaṇa Sutta (Pali) or Anātmalakṣaṇa Sūtra (Sanskrit), is traditionally recorded as the second discourse delivered by Gautama Buddha. The title translates to the "Not-Self Characteristic Discourse", but is also known as the Pañcavaggiya Sutta (Pali) or Pañcavargīya Sūtra (Skt.), meaning the "Group of Five" Discourse. In this discourse, the Buddha analyzes the constituents of a person's body and mind (khandha) and demonstrates that they are each impermanent (anicca), subject to suffering (dukkha) and thus unfit for identification with a "self" (attan). Translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

Join Entering the Mandala: Mindfulness and Imagination, September 1-7 “Imagine an enormous subterranean chamber all lit up from within. We are living in a tiny chamber next to – indeed, part of – the larger one. We can see nothing at all of what's going on in the large chamber. In fact, we have no idea that the large chamber is even there.” Sangharakshita This week we're opening portals to awareness and the wonders that can arise when we really start to pay attention to everything that's going on in the world around us. What would it be like to experience yourself without restrictive concepts? What dimensions might open up in your life as you engage with myths and symbols? Awareness, or mindfulness, is an essential foundation for all spiritual growth. And through knowing experience directly we can transform difficulties and become happier, calmer and more fulfilled. But awareness offers much more: it also provides a doorway to other dimensions in the large chamber of our being. Awareness of the body, heart and mind can blossom into awareness of boundlessness, love and mystery, as Buddhist teachers have taught down the millennia. Imagination is a key to this opening. When our minds are clear and we're alive to what's within us and around us, our imaginations wake up to new possibilities. Kusaladevi joins Vidyamala and Vishvapani in a conversation exploring the theme of their upcoming Home Retreat, Entering the Mandala: Mindfulness and Imagination. This Home Retreat is an opportunity to live for a week with mindfulness, kindness, poetry and creativity, even in the midst of our daily lives. An exploration of mindfulness and imagination through talks, meditation, creative activities, discussion and shared ritual, particularly focused on the richly evocative symbol of the mandala. Bhisham Sahni was an iconic writer, playwright and actor, born on 8 August 1915. Bhisham Sahni was one of the most well known and celebrated writers of post-independent India. While he was also known for being a professor, an essayist, translator, editor, dramatist, theatre Director, actor, social and political activist, it is his fiction that has made the most significant contribution to Hindi literature. One of the most gifted writers of his time, a man whose humanity ran like a deep river through his life and work, a man who lived with quiet dignity and gentle kindness, Bhisham Sahni wrote some of the finest books of his time, books imbued with humanity, compassion, gentle humour and delicate nuances. Proficient in Punjabi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu and English, Bhisham Sahni started writing short stories at the age of 16. He wrote in Hindi more than a hundred short stories, compiled in ten volumes; seven novels, six plays, stories for children, a biography of his brother, Balraj Sahni, an autobiography and his Literary Journey (MeriSahitYatra) in Punjabi. BhishamSahni's last unpublished novel on Gautama Buddha was written in English. Sahni's screen acting debut came after he had turned 69 and new wave filmmaker Saeed Akhtar Mirza offered him the lead in Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho (1984). In 1986, the Indian neo-realist filmmaker Govind Nihalani turned Sahni's novel 'Tamas' into a landmark television film. It was also the high point of Sahni's acting career. He played an old Sikh on the run with his wife from the riot-torn areas. Watched, and loved, all over India, the film triggered violence from Hindu militants, including threats to Nihalani. He was last seen in Aparna Sen's critically acclaimed film Mr And Mrs Iyer (2002). He received numerous awards for his excellence as a writer. He died in Delhi on 11 July 2003. There are so many ways to explain or look at what enlightenment is. Gautama Buddha once said that it's the end of suffering. Enlightenment can also be defined as the experience that you're not separate from God, you're one with God.Merriam-Webster - Definition of enlightened1: freed from ignorance and misinformationNobody can know what spiritual enlightenment is until they attain enlightenment, however one of the most popular benefits of meditation is that it helps the person to reach a stage called enlightenment, described as a clarity of thinking allowing deeper levels of knowledge, perception, and purpose. When it comes to every day thinking if your stressed out not only will stress affect your health it also negatively impacts your ability to think clearly. Have you ever tried to read a book, make music, create something, or study while under stress? Stress, anxiety, and fear cause us to continually focus on ourselves and our own issues making focusing on positive change nearly impossible. So, can anyone become enlightened? When you uncover this True mind within, pain, worry and stress disappear, you can know the ways of the world, and live well with a balance mind. Listen in while Coach KA shares on his experience towards spiritual enlightenment from religion to self-discovery of the Kingdom of God within. The age of enlightenment is upon us and it's here to show us who we really are.

This wonderful film "Carving the Divine" shows us that the path to mastery of this ancient art is as much a spiritual discipline as it is the learning of a skill. The profound yet stern compassion of the teacher, and the sincerity of the apprentices as they seek to uncover the images within the wood, are wonderfully shown. Watching this film, one may grasp how the art of the Busshi is not simply to produce sculpture: it is itself a Way of life and wisdom, in which the images mirror the artists' own hearts."- Meido Moore, Rinzai Zen priest Abbot at Korinji Rinzai Zen MonasteryWhat is Carving The Divine about?Carving the Divine is a documentary film that offers a rare look into a 1400-year-old Buddhist woodcarving tradition and the practitioners struggling to preserve its legacy in a rapidly changing Japan.Carving the Divine has become the official selection for 30 film festivals, showing in a total of 22 countries, and won awards at 13 festivals worldwide, such as winning the Best Director Award of a Foreign Language Documentary at World Cinema Milan and premiering at the famous Raindance Film Festival in London.Carving the Divine Awards: World Cinema Milan Festival 2019 - Best Director of a Foreign Language Documentary Award Art Quake Kyoto 2019 - Best Feature Length Film Award Helsinki Education Film Festival International - Best Historical Feature Award Australia Independent Film Festival 2019 - Jury Award Arte Non Stop Festival 2019 - Best Screenplay Award Religion Today Film Festival 2019 - In the Spirit of Faith Award and commendation Award Japan Indies Film Festival 2020 - Best Documentary Feature Award Puerto Rico International Film Festival ENFOQUE 2020 - The mention of Honor of Best International Documentary Film New York Interfaith Film & Music Festival 2020 - Best International Documentary award Rhode Island International Film Festival Roving Eye 2021 - Best Documentary First Prize Rhode Island International Film Festival 2021 - Flickers International Vision Award: First Prize World Independent Cinema Award (WICA) 2021 - Best Cinematography in a Documentary - Best Director of a Foreign Language Documentary Buddhist Arts and Film Festival 2022 - Best Documentary Award, Boulder ColoradoThe art of Busshi is one of the most significant cultural legacies of Japan. It captures the hardships and aspirations of the current generation of apprentice-artisans training under the harsh-yet-kind tutelage of a master carver. Heart-warming and intimate, "Carving the Divine" unveils the secret world of master-disciple relationships among sculptors of religious icons. It also shines a spotlight on the time-honored traditions of passing down ancient techniques to a new generation. Has Japan retained enough reverence for the demanding learning process that takes years of thankless dedication to just begin to develop mastery? No. It is all the desires that we have. Ashdin talks about how it is a paradox. He talks about how we, as humans tend to trap ourselves in desires that we create for ourselves, and the desire, is always out of reach and creates suffering. Vishvapani looks behind the veils of history, legend and the texts themselves to conjur a vivid, felt image of the Buddha's personality. In a series of beautifully observed close-up drawings from the Pali Canon we are left with a portrait of spiritual genius that is both enigmatically distant and thoroughly human. From the talk The Buddha's Personality, part of the series Gautama Buddha, given at London Buddhist Centre, February 2011 to mark the launch of the book: 'Gautama Buddha: The Life and Teachings of the Awakened One' (Quercus, 2011). *** Subscribe to our Dharmabytes podcast: On Apple Podcasts | On Spotify | On Google Podcasts Bite-sized inspiration three times every week. When the Buddha finally sat down under the Bodhi tree and saw deeply into the nature of things, what had brought him to that point? And what happened next? Vishvapani focusses in on the Buddha's experience after Enlightenment, bringing his nuanced, perceptive reading to the words the Buddha himself is said to have employed in order to best evoke his experiences as he struggled to give voice to them. Excerpted from the talk The Buddha's Vision, part of the series Gautama Buddha, given in Bristol Buddhist Centre, 2011, launching the book 'Gautama Buddha: The Life and Teachings of the Awakened One' (Quercus, 2011). *** Subscribe to our Dharmabytes podcast: On Apple Podcasts | On Spotify | On Google Podcasts Bite-sized inspiration three times every week. An Ascended Master is a great teacher, healer or prophet who has lived a human life and who is now in the realm of spirit. Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism who later became known as “the Buddha,” lived during the 5th century B.C. Gautama was born into a wealthy family as a prince in present-day Nepal. Although he had an easy life, Gautama was moved by suffering in the world. •Contact: agentk21podcast@gmail.com -Music: agentk21music@gmail.com -Counseling: Fullcirclecounselingservice@gmail.com •Linktree- https://linktr.ee/agentk21podcast •Music Linktree - https://linktr.ee/Agentk21music?utm_source=linktree_profile_share •Counseling - https://www.keandranesmith.com/ •Donations - https://linktr.ee/agentk21podcast •Music Lessons Website - https://agentk21music.wixsite.com/mysite •”NEW” - Merchandise Store - https://1111-podcast.creator-spring.com •Social Media: @agentk21podcast (IG); @agentk21 (Twitter) •YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/channel/UCVMPPFBImTwvXpbx-ndg-ZQ •Introduction music: https://soundcloud.com/agentk21/interlude - Interlude by @Agentk21music (IG).

What do the following people have in common: Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson, Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, supermarket magnate Frank Outlaw, spiritual teacher Gautama Buddha, and the father of Margaret Thatcher? They are known to be motivators of people and sources of many powerful quotations. They also share a common understanding of the power of our Words, Actions, Thoughts, Character and Habits. Do you understand the agricultural relationship of these 5 things- How they grow into you? Character is defined by... On Today's Podcast of Living Life Like It Matters, it is ‘Story time with Mr. Black’. Today Mr. Black will be talking about Character. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s famous speech, ‘I have a Dream’, references character. Dr. Kings dream was to live in a country, in a world, where character was the determinant of our progress and treatment. In a paraphrase, he had a dream that one day his 4 children would live in an America where they were judged by their choices, instead of their ‘non-choices’. Dr. King believed in a meritocracy; to be treated based on his repeated actions. Where does our character come from? It comes from our action. Where do our actions come from? They come from our thoughts. Where do our thoughts come from? They come from our Words. There is an interconnectivity between our Words, Actions Thoughts, Character and Habits. “Plant a thought and reap a word; plant a word and reap an action; plant an action and reap a habit; plant a habit and reap a character; plant a character and reap a destiny”. Its all about choices! Enjoy today’s Story Time, Character is defined by our choices! Tune into our new Podcasts every Monday and Thursday, and build the pattern for; Living Life Like It Matters.
