Join your host Steve Yusko as we discover Ryan David Orr. He was born in Ashland, Oregon to a singer-songwriter mother and a visual artist father. Opening Narration by Faith Yusko All songs in this podcast episode have been used with prior permission by the artists. Please Subscribe Here: Https://linktr.ee/thelongislandsoundpodcast h6n3aNIpE8zloKGwmnz4 Some of his earliest memories are of his mother singing him songs each night as bedtime stories. His childhood, which took place between Oregon and California, and later Tennessee and North Carolina, were surrounded by art, music, writing, and the adventures of rural living. At the age of 7, he began playing violin and singing in choirs, subsequently being recruited for several performance opportunities including a long run of the opera Tosca and the Northwest Children's Honor Choir. His love of music and performance blossomed with the later move to the American south. His mother, a country and folk songwriter, hoped that proximity to Nashville would be beneficial to her musical career. She recorded several albums, giving Ryan his first taste of being “in the studio”. For Ryan, there are too many influences and inspirations to list all of them in one place, but his background in the performing and visual arts began to take form during his high school years, when he put down the violin and picked up guitar. He immersed himself in a plethora of musical styles and genres. He spun old classic rock vinyls he found in record store bargain bins. He kept a constant flow of music going for most of his waking hours, devouring everything from Neil Young to Radiohead, Mos Def to Deftones, Beethoven to RL Burnside. He was greatly influenced by the Seattle grunge sound, modeling much of his first song writing attempts after bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Nirvana. Most of what he wrote at first wasn't very good, but over time he began to shape and define his own voice. He continued absorbing artists like Tori Amos, Tom Waits, Whiskeytown, Thelonious Monk, Richard Buckner, Bjork, Massive Attack, Cat Stevens, and CSNY. Awards/Accolades: Best Folk Album International – Toronto Exclusive Magazine (2007) Finalist – Song of the Year songwriting competition Runner-up – Song of the Year songwriting competition Best Music Video – Show Low Film Festival (2018) Best Music Video - White Mountains Film Festival (2022) Best Music Video - Switzerland International Film Festival "Great, distinctive voice...worthy of top marks" -Stuart Epps, producer (Oasis, Elton John, Led Zeppelin) Another artistic love of Ryan's is in the arena of film and photography. He holds a degree in Film and Media Studies from Arizona State University, and began putting his film knowledge to use in 2013 when he wrote, directed, and filmed a music video for the song "Margaret" from his album More Than Strangers. Since then, he has written, directed, and/or filmed several more music videos to accompany songs from his various albums. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thelongislandsoundpodcast/message

The Gibson Brothers have had their greatest success in the world of bluegrass, but their talent knows no bounds. Songwriting is at the core of who they are, and on their latest album "Darkest Hour" which releases on January 27, 2023. they deliver 12 tracks produced by Jerry Douglas. The majority of this album was recorded with a standard bluegrass configuration, but a few of the tracks have lap steel, percussion, and electric guitar masterfully blended together by Jerry. They began work on this album just before the world shut down in March 2020.As Northerners growing up in a Southern business, they had to work twice as hard as the bands from the South to achieve the success they had, and were the first from that far north to carve a path to IBMA Entertainers of the Year.“The songs on this album are the sounds we heard growing up, riding around with our dad, who was a farmer, in his pickup, or with our mom in her station wagon. This sound was on the radio,” says Leigh, citing the Eagles, Bob Seger, Tom Petty, and the warm country sounds of Don Williams, Emmylou Harris and Waylon Jennings as influences for Mockingbird, produced by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach with Fergie Ferguson (Johnny Cash, Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers). The members of R.E.M. certainly agree. “It's incredible! They did a great job,” says vocalist Michael Stipe. “It really re-focuses the song and lyric in a great way.” Bassist Mike Mills offers, “Wow. I really didn't see that one coming. I love it,” with guitarist Peter Buck echoing those remarks: “Wow. Incredible.” Even Bill Berry, R.E.M.'s former drummer, and one of the original writers of the song, chimes in, saying, “It's the best cover of it I've heard.Call the Listener Line (631) 800-3579 and leave your comments for our host and guests. Please Subscribe Here: Https://linktr.ee/thelongislandsoundpodcast Call the Listener Line and leave us your impressions (631) 800-3579Support the showConnect with us here: Https://linktr.ee/thelongislandsoundpodcast If you like what you hear, click the link below to support us with a secure donation. https://www.paypal.com/donate?token=lg4LOxiWjgFS8z75NJpziIIRYXvpvtm6oZ2VlYE5eedpGDcJ-YD1ybtpJZiAWaSa1HKHDPX7IFp9uisz

Gene Casey's Roots-Rock Music Captivating Fans on an Adventurous Journey. In this episode your host Steve Yusko get you acquainted with Gene Casey, the artist behind some fantasitc Alt-Country Music. Gene formed the Lone Sharks, “the house band of the Hamptons,” where bars were plentiful and audiences – both the local and the celebrated – were robust and loyal. Over the course of the next few decades Gene and the evolving line-up of Sharks “played – and tore up – every roadhouse, bar, and honky tonk from Manhattan to Montauk” (Bop Magazine), sharing the bill and backing legendary roots rock & roll acts as Wanda Jackson, the Band, Bo Diddley, Sleepy LaBeef, NRBQ, and the Ventures.Gene's original music met with great acclaim with local and international indie radio play. Several of his roots-drenched songs have been used in “A Prairie Home Companion” and on the soundtracks to television and feature films, including “Justified” and “Sons of Anarchy” ; the 2012 thriller “The Tall Man” starring Jessica Biel, the 2013 release “The Killing Season” starring Robert DeNiro, and Rob Reiner's “Being Charlie.”In 2014 Gene and the Lone Sharks were inducted into the Dan's Papers “Best of the Best” Hall of Fame, having been honored over 20 times. received the Long Island Sound Award by the L.I. Music Hall of Fame, “for contributions to the Island's musical landscape.”2017 saw the release of “Guitar In The Rain” an album celebrating the roots of contemporary Americana with original songs that evoke the romantic sweep of 60s pop, classic C&W and the raw untamed spirit of early rock & roll.2020 brings “Free Country: Essential Recordings” a compilation of some of the best songs culled from 20 years of work, as well as a unique arrangement of the public domain standard, “Home on the Range” where all of Gene's influences and obsessions seem to converge.Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast Intro/Outro song in this episode: “Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent's album, Mike Nugent and the Blue Moon Band . Conquering Cantankerous Divide with Hopeful Folk Music by Josie BelloFolk Singer/Songwriter joins our host Steve Yusko for an engaging conversation about the power of music, the divide in our nation and her rise on the music scene as a self-proclaimed, "Late-bloomer". We explore three of songs and learn about ways to further expose original music in our world. Josie Bello has been musical from an early age. She would often walk around the house, humming or singing some tune she had formed in her head, so frequently that her mother would ask her to "please pipe down". Growing up in Queens, NY, it is no surprise that her musical hero is Bruce Springsteen - an artist she wishes she could channel into her own songwriting at times. But then again, doesn't every songwriter want… need... to channel “The Boss.” Josie's writing process is spontaneous, at times a phrase or chord progression that gets written down only to sit for a time, until the moment is right. Other times it comes in a rush, allowing her to grab the inspiration of the moment and run with it. In the past few years, she's recorded and released two albums with songwriter and producer, Mike Nugent. It is her desire that her music can provide you with a simple respite from the troubles of the day or, if nothing else, the simple joy that music holds.Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast Intro/Outro song in this episode: “Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent's album, Mike Nugent and the Blue Moon Band . Damn Tall Buildings Independently Release Their 3rd Album, due out Sept 9 Brooklyn, NY — Acoustic Americana trio fed on bluegrass, roots rock, old time, and vintage swing, Damn Tall Buildings are excited to release their 3rd album, Sleeping Dogs, on September 9. Whether sharing lead vocals and instrumental solos or blending their voices into loose, joyous harmony, the three members of Damn Tall Buildings—multi-instrumentalist and primary lyricist Max Capistran (guitar and banjo), bassist Sasha Dubyk, and fiddler Avery Ballotta—delight in entertaining. Sleeping Dogs is a sensory treat that will have you smiling, dancing, and singing along. Sleeping Dogs is a bop about looking things smack-dab-right-in-the-face and is essentially about how it has become almost impossible to not be constantly influenced by current events, media, and all of the other things that surround you in your day-to-day life. “Snow Crash” by Neal Sephenson—a bizarre, mind-altering romp through the infocalypse— is high on the band's reading list. Damn Tall Buildings says, “The impact that things outside ourselves have on us, specifically, the rise of social media and all that comes with it, leads to an exponential increase of people's awareness of other people's lives, and how that affects them and how they feel about their life.”The trio is individually from all over the United States (New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Montana), but were born as a band while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA in 2013. They started as buskers on Newbury Street in Boston, started touring nationally, and then moved the band to Brooklyn in 2017.Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast Intro/Outro song in this episode: “Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent's album, Mike Nugent and the Blue Moon Band . Santoriello says the band got the “Devil's Advocate” gig when the musicians union in New York, Local 802, was notified that the film's director needed a rock band. “The cool part,” says Cadillac Moon vocalist Al Santoriello, reflecting on the film shoot, “is that we got to play our own song. (Show Me Your Tattoo) “They asked us to prepare a version of Robert Johnson's `Crossroads'- which we did. Then, as I'm sitting there on the movie set, the director got a phone call, and it was someone at Warner Brothers saying there was a legal entanglement with the song. I heard him say, `OK, I guess we'll let the band play their own song. “It really was fantastic.”Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast Intro/Outro song in this episode:“Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent's album, Mike Nugent and the Blue Moon Band . How To Navigate Tumultuous Seas with the Hopeful Inspiring Music of Toby TobiasToby Tobias Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Huntington Station N.Y. based Toby Tobias has immersed himself in many American music genres while never leaving behind his roots in the rhythms and melodies of his homeland. Toby is excited to be bringing his brand of African-infused American Global Music to the ears of listeners with some of Long Island's best and most accomplished musicians. Reviews:"Putting politics and the problems of Africa aside, this is a brilliantly put-together album of quality musicianship and songs each with their own identity and style all from a man who has not forgotten his life and musical roots. As they would say in Zambia (Bemba), "Zikomo" Toby."– Rory Stanbridge, FATEA Magazine UK"Tobias' palpable love of Africa informs the whole CD in a way that is powerful and moving. Though the album shows the traces of his musical background and influences - which is as it should be - it also sounds very fresh. That's a pretty rare achievement in music today."REACH OUT2017 Brand new ep from THE TOBY TOBIAS ENSEMBLE With Mike Nugent, Cosmo Mallardi, Jon Mele, and Richie Guerrero....The sound of Africa comes through loud and clear in the EP which gives a wonderful taster introduction to Toby's style of music."Rory Stanbridge. The Locksmiths: Searing Vocals Combing Creative Musing & Americana Music The Locksmiths are an Americana husband-and-wife band mixing rich melodies with evocative lyrics. The Queens natives weave a Southern Gothic tapestry through bluegrass-inspired folk-rock.Robert and Krissy met in 2010 through a mutual friend looking to put a band together. Upon falling in love and abandoning that project, The Locksmiths was born. Taking their mutual love of The Beatles as well as their admiration of Americana artists like The Band and Gillian Welch, Robert and Krissy began crafting their own sound. The Locksmiths soon took shape in New York City and have since toured major cities including Nashville, Austin, and Indianapolis. They released their debut album in 2016 (backed by Cole Quest & The City Pickers) to positive reviews. Whether singing about love and despair or triumph and tragedy, their songs not only inhabit a world of Faulkneresque proportions but also envelop the personal lives of the writers as well.“A truly stirring vocal performance.” - Rachel Cholst (Adobe & Teardrops)“Raucous Americana… incredibly clever lyrics that bite.” - Greg Jones (Ear to the Ground Music)“Crescendoing poetry crooned with grit. Bock's storytelling has become more crystalline than ever before.” - Nicholas Horner (Porch Stomp)Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast:Website: Https://GigDestiny.com/podcast Follow Steve Yusko, GigDestiny.com, and his adventures: Website: https://www.GigDestiny.com Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, FacebookSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/21aCeQWDmD4fkucpfVf9Email: Steve@GigDestiny.com Intro/Outro song in this episode:“Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent's album, Mike Nugent and the Blue Moon BandSpotify link: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6fyt3RRvArsU7NUGOeEGBA?si=GI6HrmA2QLKGOt2clRIVsQ https://youtu.be/gg5nfIPkimA All songs in this podcast episode have been used with prior permission by the artists. He invites the listener into a warm haze of chiming guitars and sweet harmonies.” -Under The Radar, 2022“Dreamy, paradise ruminations characterize Andrew Weiss' songwriting. He has a knack of blending paradise with the end game.” -Americana Highways, 2021"Sly and soulful folk...an early 70's Neil Young meets Fleet Foxes take on indie-folk." -Glide Magazine, 2021“Andrew Weiss is practically a veteran of a sound he calls “power pop-icana,” melding hooks with that classic Americana country-rock style. His songs hit all the Tom Petty/Byrds marks in a bright, breezy, and melodic way.” -PopRock Record, 2021“One of 2020s most promising artists.” - Glide Magazine, 2020“We think it could be a big 2020 for Andrew Weiss and Friends.” - American Songwriter, 2020“The earnestness of Laurel Canyon folk-rock tempered by the wry humor of power pop.” - The Boot, 2020"A really kind of lovely pop aesthetic that is reaching people. Andrew Weiss is very clever...we're damn lucky to have found this." - Ryan Spaulding (Ryan's Smashing Life, The Outlaw Roadshow), 2019"One of the true prerequisites for the creation of good music is talent, and Andrew Weiss is simply oozing with it. Weiss is a band in a box. Perhaps my favorite part is Weiss' perspicacious ear - a quality developed through listening and practicing." - The Music Court, 2016"We're talking catchy music that wastes no time getting stuck in your head." - Bucketlist Music, 2016"Today's mainstream pop groups could learn a lesson from this. Soulful Singer-Songwriter Kelli Baker Rises like the Phoenix & Delights All. Call the Listener Line (631) 800-3579 https://www.kellibaker.com/ Music On Spotify With a powerhouse voice dripping with a haunting sensuality that slips easily into growling old-school blues tones, Kelli speaks her heart like a beat poet in a late-night dive. The kind you only know if you're in the know. Her music is an amalgamation of authentic blues/rock and heart-on-her-sleeve singer/songwriter pop with folk/gospel roots. Known in some circles as “The Phoenix”, Kelli was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She moved to New York in 2012, with $500 in cash, chasing the heels of Hurricane Sandy. Learning music like so many others in the church choir, Kelli graduated to fronting a hard rock band and a folk duo, writing her own music at an early age. Swiftly moving through the ranks of Long Island's bristling music scene, she has quickly become a known name. Kelli has been nominated as the Best Singer from Long Island 2021 by Bethpage's prestigious “Best of Long Island” award series and named one of Newsday's Rising Stars of Long Island for 2019. Kelli has been compared to Bonnie Raitt, Chris Cornell, Susan Tedeschi, and Aretha Franklin. Her dynamic blues tones and gospel nods have been called a kind of ethereal blues. Kelli has recorded at Milk House Studios with multi-platinum producer Philip A. Jimenez (Wheatus, Teenage Dirtbag) and Blokhed Studios with Grammy-nominated producer Tommy Spiegel. Susan Aquila (recorded and worked with Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, and Steven Tyler) appears on “Cathedral”. Virtuoso Slide Guitarist & Powerhouse, Ace Stringman Mark Newman on how to DeliverAs I navigate the musical waters of the Long Island Sound, more often than not I'm blessed to find some great music well up in my wheelhouse. And that's how I felt as I experienced Mark Newman's music Growing up in New York, Mark Newman's musical journey has taken him around the world several times as both sideman and singer/songwriter. This ace string man (guitar, lap steel, mandolin, dobro) and accomplished songwriter is the type of singer whose warm and expressive voice sounds like an old friend. He put it all together on 2006's “Must Be A Pony” In 2010 he took a quantum leap forward with the stunning “Walls Of Jericho” and has just released, “Brussels”, a live solo EP. “Empirical Truth”, his latest CD was released in June, 2018 (Danal Music, LLC, by WBA Records). It won best CD from the Long Island Blues Society. Sharing the stage with such notables as soul legend Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), John Oates(Hall and Oates), Jim McCarty (Yardbirds, Renaissance),the late Willy DeVille (Mink DeVille), Bobby Whitlock (Derek and the Dominos) and Sam The Sham, has given Newman the perspective to craft an individualistic sound framed in straight-from-the-hip rock'n'roll, simmering with the subtle flavors of blues, R'n'B, funk, folk and soul.(New York, NY) — It was announced today that The Long Island Blues Society has named EMPIRICAL TRUTH by Mark Newman their 2019 CD Challenge winner. As the local winner, EMPIRICAL TRUTH will represent the Long Island Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge's Self-Produced CD Contest; which happens in Memphis from January 28th to February 1st, 2020. Empirical Truth is also currently #1 in its category on the Reverbnation charts. Listen to Empirical Truth on Spotify here:https://open.spotify.com/album/3Y5bQm8AOQPoFGmRyyaPVB It can certainly be said that a labor of love is not much of labor at all, and with singer/songwriter and guitarist Mark Newman's latest release “Empirical Truth” (via Danal Music) this is very much the case, as he's proven once again his power of true musicianship.Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast:Website: Https://GigDestiny.com/podcast Follow Steve Yusko, GigDestiny.com, and his adventures: Website: https://www.GigDestiny.com Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, FacebookSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/21aCeQWDmD4fkucpfVf9Email: Steve@GigDestiny.com Intro/Outro song in this episode:“Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent's album, The growth of The Long Island Sound Podcast has been exponential.
