We're joined by long-time contributor Julie Young who helps us field unique listener questions on how to build an annual training plan, coping with race stress, and overcoming body image issues. Building annual training plans The first question comes from our forum, from Devin Knickerbocker. He writes: “I just read the Houshang Amiri article “How to Develop a Yearly Training Plan” and I notice that he uses a spreadsheet. I have also been using a spreadsheet, but what resources and formats do you guys use to design and manage an ATP? Are there any apps or programs that facilitate this better than Microsoft Excel? I have tried to use TrainingPeaks, but I have found that it is difficult to get the right level of view. For example, their ATP builder is a combination of too high-level (e.g., you can't look at planned progression of weight lifting, core, flexibility, skills and training all next to each other) and also, somehow, too granular (e.g. you have to pick the amount of TSS that you plan to be doing seven months in the future, which feels absurd). TrainingPeaks is great for planning a week and/or designing individual workouts but for the ATP functionality, i just don't feel that it fills the bill. Any other ideas?” Coping with racing stress This question comes from John Ingram of Dublin, Ireland. He writes: “I'm new to road racing. I love it. But my love of racing is matched only by my hatred of pre-race nerves. The stress, the anxiety—sometimes to the point of nausea—takes away from the experience. What do I do to make it go away so I can enjoy this sport even more?” Body image This question comes from Amanda Newell in Providence, Rhode Island. She writes: “As a sprinter, it helps to put on muscle weight. Commitment to this discipline often means I'm surrendering to the fact that buying jeans will be more challenging than not. How can I better accept the beauty in strength and performance versus one that is defined more by the traditional image of beauty and femininity as skinny and less muscular?” Learn more about your ad choices. The annual ILEETA Conference is a unique experience for instructors. Experts that are passionate about training and hungry for knowledge gather to learn from and collaborate with some of the best instructors in the world. Today's guest, Andrew DeMuth, has been a member of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association for years and hasn't missed a conference since his very first one! Will we see you at the 2022 ILEETA Conference? Register here: https://www.ileeta.org/conference-registration-instructions/ Andrew DeMuth served as the agency training officer, range master, and press information officer in addition to running the investigations division during his 25-year career. Now, he trains extensively at agencies and police academies throughout New Jersey and teaches at conferences like ILEETA's. Adam sat down with Andrew to talk leadership training at the 2021 ILEETA Conference, where he instructed “12 Concepts of Leadership That Should Be Part of Annual Training”. The course defines the state of leadership today as a crisis and highlights the lack of universal training standard and the risks associated with failure to train and lead. Andrew provides instructors with the knowledge and skills they need to be a great leader and trainer, so they can support their team's development. In this episode, Adam & Andrew discuss what makes a great leader and leadership program. There is a need for ongoing and continuous decision-making/leadership training for all officers, not just command staff and executive level leadership. Having these positive influencers in an agency creates a strong environment where people feel engaged, supported, and fulfilled in their work. Leaders: Leadership is a responsibility. Get to know your team, strive to develop them, and create leaders. It's not about you. Earn your leadership and re-earn it everyday. You must care, commit, and continue to be a learner to be a great leader. If you served on active duty in the military and then become a federal civilian employee, that military time may count as time in service for calculating your FERS or CSRS pension. Periods of active duty while in the any of the military reserves, including your annual active duty training, count. However, National Guard active duty only counts if it was Title 10, section 233(d), or under a call by the president. Service must be honorable. And a deposit has to be received before you retire (that's the buyback). You need to qualify for a FERS or CSRS pension, which generally means serving at least 5 years as a federal civilian. Then the military time you deposit, nicknamed buyback, is added to the years you actually work as a civilian when calculating your FERS or CSRS pension benefit. The pension formula for a FERS employee is the average of your High 3 salaries times your creditable service times our multiplier. If you have 24 years of federal civilian service, a high-3 pay of $110,000, and will retire before age 62, your pension would be $110,000 x 24 years x 1%. That's $26,400 a year. If your buy back 6 years of military time, that 30 years which is $33,000. That's $6,600 more a year in your FERS pension. Live 30 years in retirement and that's almost $200,000 more with the buyback. And buying back military time may give you enough creditable years you to retire earlier. A buyback for a FERS employees is about 3% of your total military BASE pay for the years you are depositing. If you wait more than 3 years to buyback, you will also have to pay interest Even with the interest it is usually worthwhile to buy back the time. The multiplier for CSRS employees is about 7%. But the rules for CSRS employees are more complicated. If you are a CSRS employee that will not be eligible for Social Security, no deposit, or buyback, is required and you will get full credit for military service after 1956. If you're a CSRS employee that will be eligible for Social Security, the military time you buy back will count towards eligibility for retirement and computation of your pension. If you don't buyback any time, your military time will count towards eligibility for retirement. And if you retire before your eligible for Social Security at 62, your military time will count toward your pension computation just up until you reach 62.If you have a regular military pension and buy back those years you will have to give up your military pension. This very rarely makes financial sense. But if you're entitled to a reserve pension that starts at age 60 you can keep that, whether you buyback or not. This often does come out as a great deal. You don't need to do all the math your HR office will do the calculations for you. You will need a copy of your DD 214 the Report of Transfer or Discharge. If you can't find it, you can request a copy it from the National Personnel Records Center by filling out a Standard Form 180. Then complete a form RI 20-97 Estimated Earnings During Military Service and mail with a copy of your DD214 to your appropriate military finance center. They send back your statement of estimated earnings.Take your estimate of earnings and your DD214 to HR and fill out an SF 2803 Application to Make Deposit or Redeposit. HR will then compute the amount of your military deposit using the Military Deposit Worksheet, let you know the amount, and options for making payments.Once HR gives you the buyback cost, compare that to how much more your pension payments would be with the buyback. The process can be a pain, but it is usually well worth it. You can payoff all at once or in payments over time. And remember, your application to deposit, buyback, military time has to be approved and paid BEFORE you retire.

This week we discuss sin and behavior modification (temporary change) vs. lasting heart change. Habitual sin patterns (like porn addiction) can paralyze us and keep Christian's ineffective and paralyzed. We explore how we can go from superficial apologies to a true desire for lasting heart change by going to going to God, who can provide the desire and heart transformation that frees us. NOTES: •This Weeks Whiskey: Bainbridge Distillery - 100 proof Whiskey Forty Saloon bourbon (super tasty!) •This Weeks Cigars: My Father Cigars - https://myfathercigars.com •First recording in about 1 month - Christian H. talks a little about his 2 weeks Annual Training for the Army National Guard in Salt Lake City & Christian B. teases out how his family vacation did not go as planned and we will talk about that on the next episode. •This topic came about after Christian B. wrote the Blog Post, “I'm Sorry, But I'm Not Sorry”: manipulation masquerading as humility and repentance - https://www.buriencounseling.com/blog/june-27th-2021 •How does change happen? •Why do so many people struggle to implement lasting change and not fall back into destructive behavior •What motivates change? Simply being sorry we got caught (not actually sorry that we hurt someone else)? or a Deep sorrow for our sin and it's wounding effects, driving us to our knees in repentance and true desire to seek God and the lasting change he has for us? •If we are truly "sorry", would we continue doing the same thing over and over and over again (like our kids do)? •Does habitual sin happen to us... or are we active participants in pursuing that sin? •Do we really want to change and leave behind our sin and be transformed by the Holy Spirit. •Romans 7:15 - Paul talks about doing the things he doesn't want to do as a slave to sin... 15For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. •We can not both be the cause of our issues and sin, and the solution to it (We need Jesus and a power that comes from outside of ourselves (see Episode 021 on Self-love) •Christian B. sees a lot of situations where people are trying to put a new "paint job" on the outside but are still broken and un-changed on the inside. •When thinking of habitual and on-going sin that ensnares men, the obvious issue that comes up is often masturbation and pornography. •It's not the action that makes us sinners. If we aren't masterbating or looking at porn but our heart is full of lust and we want to and are making plans to do those things... we are still slaves to that sin desire. •We need to think vertically of our sin and how it hurts not just us and those around us but most importantly, hurts God and our relationship with Him. •Our sin should grieve us and we should pray Psalms 139 to ask God to help reveal our heart to us. •It's only our reliance and dependance on God (through prayer and regular time in the Bible) that will change our hearts desires and therefore our long-term actions and behavior and free us from our habitual sin and desires for sin. •To have real "heart change" engages the why behind what's causing the destructive behavior and not just the behavioral symptom of what's going on inside the heart. •Contrition, Confession & Repentance should be a regular rhythm in a Christian's life. •What do you do when we know we need to repent but don't want to...? Are we ok being not in control and feeling "weak" not being the one able to fix the situation? •We are called to be dependent on God. Soldiers do a lot of training. In order to function well in battle, they spend hours each year training on various things. For instance, the training the United States Marine Corp delivers to its solders each year includes water survival, operations security, chemical/biological/nuclear defense, physical fitness, counter intelligence awareness, cyber awareness and rifle marksmanship.1 Although all the training is important, General Alfred M. Gray once highlighted the priority of combat skills with his famous saying “Every Marine is, first and foremost, a rifleman. All other conditions are secondary.”2 I bet, if you know a Marine, they have heard this saying! The Christian life is compared to the equipment of a solder in Ephesians 6. There, the equipment of a Roman soldier illustrated the spiritual battle of life. In the passage, we are urged to take up the various pieces of “spiritual equipment” such as the belt of truth. Then we are commanded to stand firm and do one other thing. Pray. Prayer is not compared to the soldier's equipment. It seems to be the essence of how we fight the spiritual battle. We are to pray at all times, according to verse 18. Romans 12:12 puts it another way, "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." As we've learned, faithfulness is seen in continual action over time. So, don't give up! Keep praying! We must first and foremost be people of prayer! With limited resources and time, it can be challenging for employers to initiate annual Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) training programs for their managers and supervisors. However, the Department of Labor routinely reports that supervisor training is a top area of non-compliance for employers. If organizations don’t properly train their front-line employees, costly litigation could result. As several recent court cases demonstrate, there is a compelling business case for prioritizing annual training to ensure supervisors and managers are equipped to navigate a potential FMLA or ADA request from an employee. Today we’ll explore best practices and resources that support employers in integrating supervisor training into their compliance and training programs. Founded in 1992, the Disability Management Employer Coalition (DMEC) is the only association dedicated to providing focused education for HR professionals who manage absence and disability in their organizations. Through in-person and online events, certification and training programs, and tools and resources, DMEC delivers effective strategies and best practices to maintain regulatory compliance, improve workforce productivity, and enhance employee engagement and health. DMEC supports over 14,000 members across the United States and Canada, and offers the knowledge and networking they need to effectively manage their integrated benefit programs and expanding workforce challenges. To address these challenges DMEC provides a training program called FMLA/ADA Training for Supervisors and Managers that includes a 25-minute video, a 10-question quiz to test knowledge, a certificate of completion and ADA and FMLA roadmaps, and the ability to track who has successfully completed the training. Find out more information about DMEC at www.dmec.org. We are pleased to have the CEO of DMEC, Terry Rhoades with us today. Terri has extensive knowledge and expertise in all aspects of absence and disability program management and prior to DMEC dedicated her career to designing, developing, and managing various organization’s absence programs. Terri has been leading DMEC strategically since 2012 and became the Chief Executive Officer in 2015. Terri holds an MBA (Business Management) from Columbus University, a Certified Professional in Disability Management (CPDM), and a Certified Case Management Professional (CCMP) from the Insurance Educational Association, Certified Leave Management Specialist.

At the margins of the residential part of the Annual Training on the Regulation of Energy Utilities, Maria Olczak (FSR) talks with Aad Correljé (Clingendael, TU Delft) about LNG markets. In February 2016, the European Commission has published an EU strategy for liquefied natural gas and gas storage as a part of its sustainable energy security package. The LNG is perceived as an important element for ensuring energy security, especially in regions currently dependent on a single gas supplier, and hence vulnerable to any supply disruptions. Nevertheless, European countries need to compete with other markets, especially the Asiatic ones for the delivery of LNG. So far Europe has been perceived as a “market of last resort”, since LNG exporters have been targeting the premium consumers in Asia. Given that domestic gas production in Europe is declining faster than expected, competition for access to energy supplies will likely increase in the future.. Aad addresses two main questions - what will be the role for Europe in global LNG markets? And what will be the role of LNG in the European energy mix?
At the margins of the residential part of the Annual Training on the Regulation of Energy Utilities, Maria Olczak (FSR) discusses with Sergio Ascari (FSR; REF, Ricerche per l’Economia e la Finanza) current developments in Ukrainian gas market. In June 2017, at the latest meeting of the Eastern Partnership Platform 3 on Energy Security, the FSR has presented its recent study on Ukrainian gas market reforms. Sergio Ascari, who is one of the authors of the report, explains the main findings of the study. In the second part of the interview, Sergio Ascari explains the situation in Central and Eastern European countries, which was one of the regions that suffered the most during the 2009 gas crisis, but also invested heavily in the development of new infrastructure. However, security is not just a matter of hardware: infrastructures need to be complemented by the adoption of efficient market arrangements, i.e. a proper software.
