However, the high court's majority said the latest map “packed” surrounding Democrats in three of the Democratic-leaning congressional districts, which diluted the Democratic voting power and strengthened Republican power around heavily-Democratic Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus. The 4-3 decision by the Ohio high court cited the 2018 state constitutional amendment prohibiting partisan gerrymandering.   GOP legislative leaders had said the rejected map was the best they could do, but the court included a fair model map in their opinion giving a representative share of seats to both parties. The court gives the legislature 30 days from July 19th to come back with a fair map.  If the legislature fails, it returns to Ohio's redistricting commission. Read the AP story and get connected with the groups taking action at AmericanDemocracyMinute.org.  Granny D said Democracy is not something we have, it's something we DO.   For the American Democracy Minute, I'm Brian Beihl.

The fifth Republican presidential debate was last night, December 15, 2015, and Lew and I are on the case. A few surprises and some good lines, but mostly horrifying, save for the good performance by Rand Paul. As always, our discussion is livelier and more illuminating than the debate itself, so don't deny yourself this guilty pleasure!

Republicans were a lot happier with last night's Fox Business Channel debate than they were with the session they had at CNBC. That's largely because the moderators never tried to challenge the candidates on the outrageous lies they told. Another week, another GOP debate tonight in Colorado - and the Republicans have a new front-runner: Dr. Ben Carson, whose mild-mannered demeanor distracts listeners from all the whack-a-doo theories and policy positions he seems to believe in. Or maybe that's what they like about him. At any rate, pundits are predicting that this debate could make or break Jeb Bush, who still leads the field with PAC money but is apparently struggling to pay his campaign staff. Pass the popcorn. In the meantime on the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton is still enjoying a very excellent October, Bernie Sanders is still in the game, and Martin O'Malley is hoping to reap the benefits of Jim Webb and Lincoln Chaffee dropping out of the race. We predict very little changes there, except the so-called Freedom Caucus will likely make getting things done even tougher.
