[Link to watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/K3zQz2KEx84]The process of getting a job can be stressful for anyone, but it's particularly challenging for international students in the US. I wasn't an exception—in fact, majoring in Marketing was probably one of the riskiest decisions for me or anyone who wanted to find sponsorship from prospective employers. It was an incredibly lonely period for me, filled with self-doubt after countless rejections. There was no guarantee that there'd be a light at the end of the tunnel, and I struggled to find advice that truly resonated with my challenges. In this episode, I want to share with you a snippet of my conversation with students from Fordham Gabelli School of Business about the best practices when applying and interviewing for jobs. If you can relate to my story or feel lost in your job search journey, here's the real talk I wish I had when I was in school.I hope you'll find it helpful. Good luck!

Even though I'm not entry-level but do hope to transition into a new field. Should I be considering such jobs in this job search?Should I be direct and mention it in cover letters? One of the things I find most overwhelming about the job search is simply not knowing what companies are out there and what roles are attainable. I love acronyms and this episode title fits right in. JAM Session stands for Job Acquisition Method. These are straight shooting, no-holds-barred conversations about how to get great jobs at the world's best tech companies. Today's conversation is all about the application process. I answer common questions like how to use referrals, how to follow up after an interview, and how long the average recruitment process takes. Get ready for some great advice on how to land a great job at the world's best tech companies! IN THIS EPISODE: [01:01] How long is the recruitment process [03:18] How to know what level of role to apply for [04:60] Best times of the year to apply [06:37] Apply or reach out for a referral first [07:45] Referrals: How many is too many? [09:34] Follow up timeline KEY TAKEAWAYS: The Kadima method teaches job seekers to cast a wide net by choosing 40+ target companies, building out a network at those companies, then searching and applying for relevant opportunities. If recruiters are talking to a handful of people, why shouldn't job seekers do the same? You want to apply quickly, within the first week or two of the job posting. If you don't apply within those first couple of weeks, you most likely won't be considered for one of these great opportunities. The best time to follow up is the day before or the day after the recruiter said they would reach out. And it's always good to act energized and make the company think that they're your number one choice. RESOURCE LINKS SYCKpodcast.com

Are you one of the thousands of job candidates who are submitting job applications but not getting an interview? It's time to take a step back and evaluate your strategy. In this episode, Maren talks about what she's learned interviewing PhDs at Beyond the Professoriate, common mistakes people are making with their resumes and cover letters, and strategies you can take to avoid these costly mistakes.
Today we're joined by David Billstrom, the CEO of Kitsbow Cycling Apparel, which manufactures 100% of their clothing in Old Fort, North Carolina. David tells us about being forced to shut down his first business, producing 120,000 face masks during the pandemic, a big failure and success with the 45 companies he's been involved in, being a mediocre investor, why businesses should be involved in their community, and more. Listen to the end to gain insight into David's new practice of asking questions rather than making statements, and his 3 step plan for finding a job that includes not applying for jobs. Top Three Takeaways: While a manager at Intel, David got an 'MBA' on the street. He would study business books at night and try to apply the principles at the office. Being curious is one of the greatest traits a person can have (and something we can all aim to improve.) Failures are the only way you learn. The successes are so dramatically influenced by luck and timing that it allows you to take credit when it's not warranted. David has recently been trying to ask questions instead of making statements. Particularly as a CEO, an incredible power is unlocked from asking these types of questions; you get more nuanced answers and create an environment where new ideas and possibilities can come to the surface. PLUS David's advice for finding a job: Use the power of the internet to research and find companies with a culture and values that are aligned with your own, as well as a boss you can learn and gain insight from, and ignore the actual job description. The email subject line for a job inquiry is a prime piece of real estate. It's often what will either drive a hiring manager to open an email and review your resume, or ignore it. As a job seeker, you need to do everything possible to make your email stand apart. So, think about what you want to convey to a hiring professional, and write your way to a new career with a powerful job inquiry email subject line!“Most of the time, we recommend the subject line contains your name and other vital pieces of info like the job title or requisition number,” says Brie Reynolds, manager of the Career Coaching Program at FlexJobs. “Depending on your situation, though, you may want to include other details to really make your email stand out.”Read the full article here: https://www.flexjobs.com/blog/post/5-go-email-subject-lines-job-seekers/FlexJobs | Find A Better Way To Work at www.flexjobs.comFlexJobs is a subscription service for job seekers. Writing a good resume is a difficult balancing act. Sometimes it can be a challenge to keep your resume length short and sweet while also including enough quality information to make a lasting impression.Hiring managers will also hold a particular interest in the skills you possess. This means it's very important to know what is relevant to the job when thinking of skills to list on your resume.
