In the sixth episode of our third series, we have an inspiring guest on the podcast, Joris Merks-Benjaminsen; a Leadership Trainer and Coach, and author of the book Managing without Power, with a passion for helping organisations to establish a thoughtful balance between the human side of leadership, and structure and accountability._____________In this episode, Joris shares the insights he has learnt from an extensive career within Google, one of the most forward thinking organisations, where he became Head of Google Academy, becoming one of the highest scoring managers of all time within the organisation.  We discuss the many lessons he learnt and approaches he took from this experience, and how we can all use these to develop our leadership practice.  Joris has such a unique approach to leadership; where he balances his need for structure and discipline, with a humanistic approach; centred around the individuals within the team. Some of Joris' unique approaches are awe inspiring, from flying out to meet members of his team to take a forest walk in order to have deep and meaningful conversations about their careers and ambitions, to actively encouraging the members of his team to think outside of the organisation for their ambitions.  I came away from this conversation inspired to take a more personal approach to my leadership, to have more honest and deep conversations in order to maximise the growth and development of those in my charge, and I know you will too._____________Joris' experience has helped him to develop an extensive toolkit to leading with a more holistic approach, combining data with the empathetic style of leadership.  Connect with him on LinkedIn and check out his book and website to see what he has to offer you:https://www.linkedin.com/in/joris-merks-benjaminsen-5673384https://www.managingwithoutpower.comhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Managing-Without-Power-Performance-Organizations/dp/9024457610_____________Do you, or someone you know, have a leadership journey and lessons to share with the world? It's Thanksgiving Sunday in 2022 here in Canada and I've got covid, feeling pretty sh**ty and am isolated from family and, y'know, not my usual accommodating open-minded self. Any of my fellow Canadians will be intimately familiar with what's going on with Hockey Canada right now. If you're listening and you don't know, go to the “Hockey Canada sexual assault scandal” Wikipedia page. It's even worse than it sounds. This is a podcast about corporate governance, so let's acknowledge the vile, unforgivable behaviour of the players involved, and the immeasurable harm and trauma they've caused for their victims, but then let's bring it back to the boardroom. And honestly, the only conceivable reaction is “what the f*ck???” Bad enough that your organization is sufficiently aware of the sexual assault perpetrated by your members that you secretly created at least one, and possibly two funds using public and membership money to settle sexual misconduct cases – 21 of them over the past 33 years. Let me read you Hockey Canada's mission statement: “To Lead, Develop and Promote Positive Hockey Experiences.” Seriously, go look at the mission and mandate page on their website filled with words like “fair,” and “respect,” and “hockey opportunities for all people regardless of age, gender, colour, race, ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status.” Not one statement from the board or management has acknowledged that THEY, as leaders of this organization, deliberately created an environment that enables, covers up, and perpetuates sexual violence. If you don't agree… Well, take 2 minutes to write down other paths Hockey Canada could have taken than setting aside stakeholder money to pay to conceal these crimes. See what you just did in 2 minutes. Hockey Canada failed to do that in 33 years. They can f*ck right off.

What IS life enriching love in the workplace? “The thread woven through all principles of RAFT is love.  Love connects the dots. Learning how to love those you work with in an authentic and appropriate way not only advances a sense of worth and value in all relationships but serves as a platform for credibility and deeper relational connectivity. When the passion you bring to work each day translates into seeing real people with real lives, you have unleashed a source of untapped power within yourself and within others. “  Nina Ellison Lt, Col. Joseph Ricciardi, published To Lead is to Love: An exploration into the role of Love in Leadership, determined that love shows up as three things: a.     Intimacy: knowing and caring about others in an authentic and appropriate way. b.    Passion: that positivity that you bring to work each day. c.      Commitment:  being dedicated to the well-being of those you share work with.  Question: How can I measure soft skills, such as appropriate love in the workplace, without falling into the trap of trying to mirror strategies and techniques used for measuring hard skills? My response:  There is a unique process essential in understanding performance outcomes that are impacted by soft skills.  Resources: https://www.healthyleadership.online/ (https://www.healthyleadership.online/) Ricciardi, J.A. It's heartbreaking to hear about all of the talented educators who are strongly considering cashing in their chips and exiting the classroom. This is not a good thing. Their students need them and quitting may not be the right move for discouraged educators. I can say this with confidence because I vamoosed from education after my 7th year. I was fortunate to be able to hightail it back into the classroom after just a 6 month hiatus. If you quit now, you may never return even if you want to. A few years after my rather intense exile. I had the opportunity to hear Jim Mahoney speak at a professional development. I was excited to hear him because he was the superintendent at my home school. I hadn't met him yet, but my mom and dad knew him and they liked him. 2 sentences into Jim Mahoney's presentation, I was hooked. This guy was engaging, funny, and highly relevant. I vividly remember one animated part of his presentation when he was talking about teacher frustration. He clenched his fists, scrunched his face, and then he empathized. As he was clenching and scrunching, he said the following: When you folks (we were an audience of k12 teachers) start wondering, Why do I keep doing this? The rest of his presentation was a powerful answer to this rhetorical question. It was a pure shot of educational areniline. I left that auditorium thinking, Man, I'm glad I'm back in the classroom. I'm not leaving again till retirement. Jim and I later connected. We catch up with one another at least annually. I love the guy and I'm not alone. Jim Mahoney is education royalty in Ohio. His resume is as impressive as it is diverse. But that's not why I invited him on this show. Jim just authored a book called To Lead is to Teach. If you, or anyone you know, are considering leaving the classroom, this book will probably give you hope and will at least give you pause. If you're not considering leaving, read it anyway and be inspired and feel great about being part of this magical calling.

Michael’s journey was intensified when he lost 5 family members in the course of 18 months. All of these experiences combined led Michael to discover his true passion in life. He is dedicated to guiding, empowering, and sharing the knowledge and wisdom he has acquired over the course of his lifetime. Drawing from this incredible health and life transformation, Michael published his award-winning book, Transformative Nutrition: The Ultimate Guide to Healthy and Balanced Living Favorite Success Quote “To hell with circumstances, I create opportunities” ~Bruce Lee Key Points 1. Most Health Problems are Not Physical  The majority of the health problems in the U.S. are not actually physical, they are mental and emotional. Most people do not smoke, overeat, or lead sedentary lifestyles for purely physical reasons. It is normally because of something in their life that they have not addressed. It could be a traumatic childhood, a broken relationship, death, or some other struggle you faced when you were younger. Just like the first step in overcoming addiction is to admit that you have a problem, the first step in overcoming health issues is to admit that you have baggage you have not dealt with. 2. To Lead a Balanced and Healthy Life You Need to Ask the Right Questions Tony Robbins says that the quality of your life is based on the quality of the questions that you ask yourself. If you are facing health struggles, you need to ask yourself these three questions to truly uncover the root cause of the issues in your life. 1) What Are You Holding On To? What happened in your life that you are still angry, depressed, or frustrated with? What are you really holding onto that is holding you back. 2) What is Life trying to Teach You? How can you reframe the thing that you are holding onto into something good? What is life trying to teach you through that struggle. 3) How Can I Move On? What steps do you need to take to move on with your life? Who do you need to forgive, what needs to be said, who needs to be removed from your life? 3. You Are Not Your Experiences So often, whenever we face something difficult in life, we are tempted to identify with that struggle or trauma. You are NOT your experience. There is more to you than the abuse, more to you than the breakup, more to you than the failure, more to you than any damn thing that has happened in your life. Your experiences are a part of your life, but they are not your life. Never forget that. 4.  You Need to Express Your Emotion As men, society has taught us to repress our emotions, this is one of the reasons for so much of the pain going on in the U.S. today. You have to express your emotions. You have to let things go and get them out of your body. It doesn’t matter how you express your emotions, just that you express them. Life can be difficult, but it is more difficult whenever you hide your feelings from the world and try and pretend that you are not in pain. 5. Create Your Own Opportunities  To hell with circumstances. Make your own opportunities. We live in one of the greatest times to be alive in human history. Now more than ever before, you have the chance to make yourself and your life into whatever you want it to be. Quit bitching about the cards you were dealt and start playing the hand until you win the game.

Rural hospitals offer jobs and much needed emergency and local healthcare. You would think with a growing population, that the number of rural hospitals would be increasing. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Rural health care is in crisis. In the last 10 years, at least 114 rural hospitals have closed in the United States. The impacts of this are far reaching. The lack of fast access to healthcare can have devastating consequences in emergency situations. The lack of healthcare resources and loss of jobs also has a negative impact on small communities.  Dr. Bill Auxier has made it his mission to prevent further hospital closures. One way he is doing this is his Rural Health Leadership Radio podcast, which helps rural hospital leaders know what other hospital leaders are doing. Not being in contact with other leaders has been one of the challenges these CEOs have faced. He also received the 2019 National Rural Health Association President’s Award because of his podcast. He is even developing a certification program for rural hospital CEOs to help increase the number of qualified candidates.  Bill grew up in the rural Midwest and began his healthcare career as a nurses aide while he was in school. He later went on to become the CEO of a surgical device company and traveled all over the world. Eventually, he decided to go back to his roots and his passion by teaching leadership and advocating for rural health care in the US. He is the CEO of Dynamic Leadership Academy and Bill Auxier Healthcare Executive Coaching. Bill is also a speaker and author of To Lead, Follow. This enlightening podcast is about leadership, rural healthcare, and how Bill’s podcast affected his work and his success.  Show Notes: [05:37] Bill feels that our core values are shaped by our experiences and the people that we've met. One of the exercises that he has leaders go through is reflecting on their upbringing.  [06:12] He grew up in a poor area of rural Southern Illinois. His dad was a Baptist preacher. It was a community that came together and chipped in when someone needed help.  [08:48] When a rural hospital closes, people have to drive further to get to a hospital, but the jobs are also lost.  [09:45] Rural hospitals closing have far reaching ramifications. Bill wants to do everything that he can to prevent further hospital closures.  [10:45] In high school and college, Bill worked as a nurses aide. This began his career in the healthcare industry.  [11:54] Bill wanted to share his passion for leadership and rural health care. If not for the close proximity of the small rural hospital, his family story would look different.  [15:37] Bill was the CEO of a surgical device company where he traveled all over the world.  [16:02] He then decided it was time to refocus on leadership and rural health care.  [16:31] Challenges that these small hospitals face is networking with other rural hospital leaders. Bill decided that he would create the Rural Health Leadership Radio Podcast to enable CEOs of rural hospitals to have a central place where they can get information and find out what other small hospital leaders are doing.  [17:35] Through his research, Bill found PPS which helped him get started, and we continue to work together today.  [18:24] He had 24 downloads his first month. He doesn't define success by downloads.  [19:14] Because of his podcast, Bill received the 2019 NRHA President's Award. The podcast has opened many doors for him, and listener's even come up to him at conferences.  [20:08] Hospital CEO turnover tops all industries. It's also hard to find qualified individuals, so Bill will be running a certification program for Rural Hospital CEOs.  [23:38] Challenges that Bill has faced with the podcast has been timing of guest interviews in time for production. Now he has the opposite problem with a bank of interviews, with experts wanting to know when the show will air.  [25:27] Some guests will write out their answers on his interview questionnaire, but then they read the answers.  [27:15] Bill targets some guests and others come to him. He uses an info packet with three segments. It has guest info, and he lets the guest have an opportunity to edit. He also sends a list of questions. He also book end questions. The third section is where the guest can add things they would like to talk about. [30:46] He now uses Basecamp and has an intern coordinate things. He also has a portable home made sound booth. Made with room dividers and plastic sheets and sound tiles. He also has a stand-up desk. He found a great voice over artist on Fiverr.  [33:51] Don't wait to start podcasting. Find a service like PPS and get going.  [36:43] He's very proud of his book To Lead, Follow. He's also a fan of What Got You Here Won't Get You There and Triggers. Bill is also a Dan Pink fan.  [37:48] Bills definition of leadership is when others follow when they don't have to.  [39:44] Darrell's takeaways: Bill's passion is fueled by how rural health care affected his family. We all need things to refuel or fill our tank. Bill defines success by how he is impacting his niche. Christina Caputo Fenton: Addiction is Everywhere! Addiction does not come in a nice neat package. To Lead by Example is the best cure for addiction for children. Yoga was the cherry on top. Meet Tina: a Boston girl who is significantly making a difference in the lives of so many suffering from addiction. Tina and Paulette don’t believe in accidents. They met on a terrible day for Tina in the Scituate Harbor parking lot that changed both of their lives for the better. Tina was standing with her brother with her head buried in her brothers arms still grieving the loss of her sister and now her father too 2014 after the death of her dear father “the rock of the family” Tina found herself at 27 a single mother having to raise a little boy on her own. She had to grind it out and work long hours to support herself and her young son and quickly grew a loyal clientele. Tina became a master stylist and colorist and grew the confidence to open her own salon and spa that she named Marilexei hairsalan and spa. Tina found fitness as a way of dealing with her grief and become a Spinning and fitness instructor. Tina at the age of 27 knew she had developed an alcohol problem Needed to make a change Tina joined a 12 step program and changed her life Tina continued to attend AA meetings and doing the right thing She then found the courage to open her own the salon But it wasn’t until the tragic death of her sister in 2011 Began the "Nicola Maria Foundation" in her dedication to create education, awareness and opportunities to combat opioid addiction that significantly shifted her work and living her life purpose. So many people crave spirituality and enlightenment. So many people crave feeling accepted loved. So many people want to experience moving into the conscious mind. People will often ask me: “How do I get there?” “How do I find peace?” Sobriety is a Journey Yoga is a Journey Yoga made the 12 steps deeper. The parallels between them are immeasurable. Yoga and The Four Desires process forced me to ask the questions, the deep questions, the dark questions of who and what I am and made me dig deep, deeper than I had ever wanted to go. Tina is changing the stigma of addictions so many suffer in silence. As a resource for the community please Follow the Nicola Maria Foundation August 18th “Comics for a Cause” on Social Media. Workplace wellness is a hot topic out there and an important concept for me and I loved diving into what ditching the drama means for this movement on the Redesigning Wellness podcast with Jen Arnold. We discuss the main sources of drama draining people's energy at work and what that means for the push for more wellbeing in the workplace. Loved this podcast and am so grateful for the opportunity. If you are looking for practical strategies to improve your personal wellness at work and the wellness of your teams you will love this podcast. We discuss the power our ego (and lack of understanding the ego) plays in our decreased wellness at work. As you might expect, we also discuss that our individual amount of drama is directly correlated to our reports of not being well at work. Short and sweet today. I hope you guys love this one! I find it so fun to have more of a conversation like this one on how our philosophy mixes in with hot topics out there. It always seems to add a bit of clarity to the chaos. Hope you all have a wonderful week and you know the deal - let's keep ditching the drama. And be well! If you have any feedback or questions let's continue the discussion at any of the places below: Twitter Instagram Facebook For more of my videos and behind-the-scenes footage of my keynotes and speaking engagements check out my YouTube Channel.
