If you did, what happened to that dream?I always ask my podcast guests what their early career aspirations were when they were a little boy or girl?  We've had some really interesting answers and for a few of my guests, they actually realised those childhood career dreams.Interestingly, according to a recent Flex Jobs Survey, only 10% of adults work in their childhood dream career.How have your dreams and career aspirations changed over the years and where are you now?Are you satisfied?Do you wake up each morning with a spring in your step, looking forward to all you will accomplish professionally?Are you eager to work with your team, in person or remotely?Do you admire and/or respect your manager?Does your physical work environment make you feel energised and inspired?Over the past 20 years as a career coach, almost all the clients I've worked with have come to me because they have said, ‘No' to most of those questions above.And most of them have come to me not because they decided to do something about that situation of their own volition, but because they went through redundancy or had lost their job and had to get professional support.When I ask how they felt about the redundancy, many have said they'd been unhappy for years however didn't do anything about it as they were afraid to make a change. Karen Stokes is the Head of the Dance Program at the University of Houston.She danced in New York and abroad with David Gordon, Larry Clark, and Stephan Koplowitz. As a choreographer, Stokes has premiered eight evening length projects, and multiple repertory works that have performed in such venues as Zilkha Hall, Discovery Green,the Kaplan Theater at the JCC, Cleveland Public Theater, Weathervane Theater in Akron, Plays & Players Theater in Philadelphia, the Cunningham Studio in NYC, and at the University of Houston.In January 2013, Karen Stokes Dance was the first contemporary dance company in Houston to receive a “Masterminds Award” by the Houston Press. She is a nine-time recipient of Houston Arts Alliance grants and was co-recipient for the 2008 Buffy Award in Best Evening Length work category (Hometown) for 2003-2008. Stokes’ documentary short on “Framing Dance,” received “Editor’s Choice” for best video from Dance Teacher Magazine in September 2010, and her dance for camera video “Gallery Construction 1” received “Editor’s Choice” for best video from Dance Magazine in March 2012. Stokes has also won the Distance Education Teaching Award at University of Houston, the ACHE Teaching Award, and the Ross M. Please welcome Jo Rowan and Associate Dean Melanie Shelley from my Alma Mater!Both inspirations to me and my growth as a dancer, I am excited to share their expertise and values at OCU. Jo is the head of the dance department and has been since 1981. Dean Melanie attended school their shortly after and they have been a team ever since. Melanie Shelley, Associate Dean and Professor of Arts Management, has served the Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management in many capacities over three decades. She enjoys working with dance and entertainment business students as the Student Success Coordinator and preparing students for professional careers. Dean Shelley serves as Costume Consultant, choreographer, company manager, and professor at OCU. Her choreography has been performed both in the United States and internationally, in Beijing and Taipei, China and her costume designs have been included in the New York City Toy Show. Dean Shelley has been named to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for multiple years, was named Oklahoma City University’s Exemplary Teacher of the Year for 2000, and served as Faculty Fellow and Interim Chair of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Oklahoma City University’s Academic Affairs Office in 2006-2007.-------------------------------------------Jo Rowan is a nationally known master ballet teacher and performer and is professor of dance and chairman of the Dance Department within Oklahoma City University’s Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Entertainment.Rowan, who was trained at the School of American Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, holds degrees in design and dance from University of Cincinnati and has performed with Cincinnati Ballet, Dallas Ballet, Garden State Ballet, Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Dallas Opera, Philadelphia Opera, Tulsa Opera, Cincinnati Opera, and as a soloist at Radio City Music Hall. She has been a guest artist with the Baltimore Symphony, Kansas City Philharmonic, and Cincinnati Symphony orchestras. A member of Actors’ Equity Association, Rowan has appeared in more than 60 musicals. She has performed in New York City, as well as at Actors Theatre in Louisville, Maine State Theatre, Playhouse in the Park, Kansas City Civic Center, and Kansas City Starlight Theatre, to name a few. She has also appeared in numerous television commercials and was a regular on the PBS TV show, Consumer Survival Kit. Rowan performed at Lyric Theatre in Grand Hotel as ballerina Grushinskaya and recently choreographed the Dream Ballet in Lyric’s production of Oklahoma!. She was the chief researcher for How To Make It In Musicals, Michael Allen’s authoritative book on developing a successful career as a musical theatre performer.Formerly ballet mistress of Dallas Ballet, Rowan has taught for all major dance organizations in the United States and has been invited to serve as an Artist-in-Residence for Oklahoma. Christmas is just around the corner, and many of my clients who are looking for a new job ask me “Should I stop looking for a job during this period or should I keep looking?” Of course Christmas and the holiday period is a wonderful time to take a break, relax and enjoy your family and friends, and hiring traditionally slows down at this time of year. However, the hiring process has not completely ground to a halt! Hiring is still happening! Companies are looking to fill not just seasonal positions, but for some companies the hiring budgets will reset before January 1 and they will already be thinking about ramping things up in the New Year. So you could, but you don’t have to, take a leave pass for the holidays. You could, and again you don’t have to, keep the momentum going. The most important thing to remember is to use your time and focus your efforts on reaping the highest benefit. Episode 34: Forget the sweaty palms and anxiety over meeting people you don’t know. If you’re going to attend a conference, it's the perfect opportunity to Network so consider all the benefits! Networking at a conference is, believe it or not, easier than you think - even if you are a shy person or you think that networking is only for those who like ‘schmoozing.’ Follow the tips below and you may find that you actually have a good time! The benefits from networking at a conference include meeting new people who can give you new information or leads that could generate new ideas or open up new possibilities for you. Think about staying focused on the positive outcomes and enjoying yourself rather than worrying about putting your foot in your mouth. At conferences you will be in close proximity to some big names, leaders in your field, and what a great opportunity to learn from them and give them the opportunity to get to know you too. Now, you can disregard these suggestions and simply do what makes you feel most comfortable, or you can take a deep breath, challenge yourself and give these suggestions a go. Remember that networking is simply about creating an opportunity to develop positive working relationships. It's not about trying to sell something to someone. • Start networking before you even arrive at the conference. Find out who will be presenting and when, who will be attending, who would be in your area of interest and who might be interested in what you have to offer. Have a look at presenters’ websites, find out items of interest and check out their background on LinkedIn. • Find out key presenters emails and drop them a short note to introduce yourself and let them know you look forward to listening to their talk. This may provide a surprisingly easy opening for you at the conference to make contact. • Most likely you will be provided with a nametag at the conference. Wear it as it makes it easier for all those you meet to remember your name. • Arrive early, sit up front, and be attentive so you can raise relevant points after the presentation. Make sure you have your business cards with you and perhaps even a personalised note on the back. (Make sure your business card clearly states what you do and represent – the presenter will receive many cards during the conference so you need to stand out.) After the presentation, if there is the opportunity to speak with the presenter, tell the presenter how much you enjoyed the talk and why. Ask relevant open-ended questions. Ask if you can follow up with an email to them or even a phone call. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know how accommodating the presenter might be. • When talking, get to the point quickly. Have questions prepared so you won't be tongue tied if feeling a little nervous. You may wish to preface your conversation with something like, “I have two quick questions if there's time …” It might be possible to arrange to see the presenter again at another similar event during the conference if they are not free to talk right away. If appropriate have your promotional material (preferably brief and compelling reading) on hand to pass on IF appropriate. • A good networker is a good listener, so while you are talking to the presenter focus 100% on them and not anyone else. Encourage the presenter to talk. Maintain eye contact and open body language. If you promise to follow up on something you’ve discussed, take a quick note and ensure that you do follow up as soon as you can. • Enjoy your time, however brief, with your target audience – this can be fun as well as a good opportunity to connect with an industry leader. • Make sure you know when time is up and excuse yourself so that you don’t dominate anyone for too long a period of time. If the presenter is not able to speak with you, be gracious and move on …

Episode 28: THE LONELINESS OF THE JOB SEEKER I was prompted to write this after a coaching session I had with a client this week. When it comes to career transition, it can be quite challenging and if you don’t have support it becomes even more challenging. Are you lucky enough to enjoy healthy and happy relationships with a great support group? Or do you feel lonely, or stuck with people who just drag you down? Let’s have a chat about this today because if you’re feeling lonely or you’re unhappy, the job search process will be much harder than it needs to be. One of the biggest issues that many people struggle with is loneliness. And sometimes the people we do know and spend time with aren’t always good for us. But often as we go through life we fall into relationships with people who aren’t necessarily healthy for us, and it can be hard to extract ourselves from them. How do we build healthy new relationships? So how do we strike out and build new relationships with people? And just as importantly, move away from negative relationships that we may feel trapped in – relationships that suck the positive energy from our life and prevent us from building better relationships with more emotionally-healthy friends. Look at yourself first Do you spend the majority of your time in the wrong relationship, or on activities that take you away from good relationships? If so, you may be trapped in a cycle of temporary friendships and superficial relationships that are briefly exciting but meaningless. But while you may recognise that the people in your life aren’t always good for you, what can you do about it? How can you build positive, lasting relationships? Where do you find great friends who can be ‘the wind beneath our wings’ – people who love and support us through good times and tough times? The first place you need to look, maybe surprisingly, is in yourself. Are you comfortable with yourself? It’s impossible to have a healthy relationship with someone else if you’re not genuinely comfortable with yourself. When you remove yourself from negative relationships and people who drag you down, you’ll often spend more time on your own for a while. But if you fear solitude, you risk staying in situations, or with people, who may not be good for you. You may feel a desperate need to ‘belong’, whether or not it’s the right situation for you to be in. The fear of being alone can lead you to making firm friends too hastily – even if they aren’t the best choice for you. Are you worried you’re not good enough? If you don’t fully value yourself, you also risk not being your authentic self with others, as you’ll be worried the real you is not good enough. Instead you’ll crave external validation of who you are, and that you’re ‘okay’ by being what you think others want to see. This can create a vicious cycle that takes you away from the feeling of peace that comes from accepting that you are ‘enough.’ Enough in your own eyes is the best place to start – from there you can build positive relationships with those who appreciate you for who you really are. Are you happy spending time alone? But what does being comfortable with yourself mean? It means being happy to spend time alone, relishing the freedom of simply reading, writing, learning a new skill, or doing anything you enjoy. Getting lost in the moment while enjoying simple pleasures is amazing for your soul, because when you learn to enjoy solitude, you won’t need to have people around just for the sake of not being alone. And instead you can take the time to seek out people who genuinely add something positive to your life. Episode 10: Are you over 50 and looking for a job? As a mature age worker you may feel that it's a real battle. What do you need to consider when looking for a job? What are the most effective job search strategies you can use at this stage? What might be holding you back from success? To be really honest, it’s tough not only for the over 50’s but for all job seekers. Success is a matter of attitude and determination and, never giving up! One of my clients in his early 40’s experienced great challenges securing a new role because of his seniority and also because of the limited opportunities in Sydney when he was in transition. In order to uncover more opportunities he had to open up his search to other cities and overseas. He became open to the idea of relocating. He found that the executive search firm consultants were of the opinion that it was a ‘tough market out there’ as they, too, were struggling to find suitable roles for him. He took matters into his own hands rather than using the common job search methods. He has now moved to Singapore having secured a role at the level he was seeking in the industry of his choice. This might not be an option you want to consider however there are times when it might be a necessity. Typically most job seekers register with recruiters and send out dozens upon dozens of resumes via online job boards when looking for a job. That used to work well when it was an employees’ market. Many of my clients have told me that it used to be so easy for them to get a job ‘back in the day’ however things have changed. Even though it may be a challenging job market right now, companies are still hiring. They’re just not hiring as freely as they seemed to years ago. There is a natural attrition rate within organisations. Those roles need to be filled – sometimes by internal candidates, sometimes by external candidates. You must do what is most effective to be the external candidate who is the Chosen One. So, what could you do? Consider what the hiring manager needs. His own job security may depend on his people making him look good. He’ll want to find a new team member who will make a significant contribution and fit in. This makes hiring a very personal matter. Therefore he might not want to leave it to the Human Resources Department to short-list the few people they believe would be the dream candidates. Also, he may prefer not to outsource the process to a recruiter and incur a hefty recruitment cost. Doing the hard yards himself by placing the perfect job ad and screening online resumes is terribly time consuming. So what is the hiring manager, to do? Unless it’s against company policy, he turns to people he already knows and trusts and asks for recommendations. His network very likely will understand the type of person who'd work well with him. The single most important thing to understand about job search is that people hire people they know will be a good fit. There’s another option open to hiring managers. LinkedIn. LinkedIn has made it so easy for anyone to do a key word search to find candidates that match their requirements. They can choose the functional capabilities required, the industry, location and even filter current or past companies to find a suitable candidate with the right experience. LinkedIn will create a list of candidates matching the required criteria, saving a lot of time. In fact, a recent JobVite survey found that 93% of recruiters use LinkedIn to source for candidates. What does this tell you? To get a foot in the door, rally your troops and gain a recommendation from a trusted contact. Make sure you can be found easily via LinkedIn. Combining these two methods will be your best bet in the current job market. Also use LinkedIn to research how you may be connected to those you wish to approach. Focus on meeting and getting to know decision-makers.
