From the physics to the biology to the psychology, Kate and Matt chat all about what exactly “colour” is, and how we're able to perceive it. What are the physical properties of colour? How do fluorescent colours work? Why are the primary colours of paint and light different, and why do they mix differently? How are our eyes, and our brains, able to discriminate between different colours? We cover all this and so much more. We also tackle a listener question about forensics… how exactly do scientists figure out time of death? Aerion plans to bring back the Golden Age of Flying, only this time, it will be done by an environmentally conscious, technology-innovative company. Tom Vice, Chairman, President and CEO of Aerion, lends his expertise in supersonic aviation to the podcast for a conversation with host Grayson Brulte on all things Aerion, plus insights into why the aviation industry stopped innovating and what the future holds. Tom walks us through his journey into aviation, from watching every Apollo launch on a small, black and white TV to working on the B2 Bomber to the “most incredible thing” he worked on at Northrop Grumman: the James Webb Space Telescope, which Tom believes could be the tool that finds life beyond Earth. Tom recalls the lessons he’s learned along the way and how they have shaped his vision for innovation and sustainability. Tom shares the vision for Aerion Connect, which builds out the entire travel ecosystem and experience—FBOs, travelling to-from airports, airplanes—to allow travelers to experience the joy of travelling once again. All of this aligns with Aerion’s vison to connect any two points in the world within three hours in a more compassionate and empathetic way, without spending so much time in an airplane. Essentially, get to your destination, enjoy your destination, and learn and love from it. Next, we step into Aerion’s highly anticipated AS2 jet and hear plans for when it will start soaring through the sky. We learn about the fully customizable, highly digitized, “Whisper Quiet” cabin; how “Boomless Cruise” is a game changing supersonic technology that’s closer to commercial reality than most people think; and how the AS2 can reinvent business by cutting significant travel times. The conversation digs deeper into the second revolutionary aspect that Aerion is perfecting: new fuels and power sources. Tom shares how customers, investors and the general public appreciate Aerion’s commitment using biofuels that are kind to our planet and are excited to see the AS2’s aerodynamically clean and efficient engine. Grayson and Tom touch upon Aerion’s partnership with Canadian-based Carbon Engineering and how they are setting Aerion’s advancements apart from the industry. Throughout the conversation, Tom touches on Aerion 2050, the company’s strategic plan to go to hypersonic, branch into supersonics for commercial aviation, what future fuel and power sources will make this a reality, the AS3, and take us inside of Aerion Park in Melbourne, Fla., where the AS2 will be designed, built and tested. To close out, Grayson and Tom discuss why aerospace innovation, specifically with supersonic jets, stopped in the mid-20th Century. From the difficult challenges to overcome environmental and noise concerns to the increased focus on revenue and dollars in commercial aviation, Tom discusses why aerospace, once of the birthplace of innovation, became stagnant; but offers optimism for what the future holds for the industry. Why Listen: Today’s episode originally aired one year ago. Usually, when I do rebroadcasts, I like to go a lot further back then that, but Robin’s episode has been on my mind a lot lately. We got a one-star review on Apple Podcasts recently, after a 132 5-star review streak. The review criticized Beyond the Uniform for focusing on the 10% of Veterans who are most successful in their career transition. I feel that there is some truth there - I imagine it can be frustrating, especially for those of you who are approaching a career transition or who are experiencing difficulty in your transition - to constantly see stories of seemingly simple success. That’s certainly not my intention for this show. However, one of the things I loved about my conversation with Robin is her candor in her own 13 year journey of mistakes, pitfalls, and setbacks, that eventually led her to a job that she truly loves. I personally put Robin in a small category of people I have interviewed where it feels like she has felt her calling in her current career path, rather than simply a job. She talks about how the attributes that made her successful in the military were a liability in the civilian world - how she had to adapt her communication and response to corporate culture in order to be successful. We talk about her job in public service and why this sort of career may be very fulfilling to other veterans. Additionally, Robin Brown is one of three Veterans spotlighted in the 30-minute documentary, Adventure Not War. I watched it and consider myself a movie aficionado -it’s fantastic. Google it - it’s also free. It is inspiring, to say the least. If you like this interview, be sure to check out Episode #268 - How the Outdoors Saved My Life (Stacy Bare), as Stacy is featured in Adventure Not War along with Robin. About Robin: Robin Brown is the Executive Director at Grand Junction Economic Partnership, a non-profit organization that is your first point of contact if you are looking to expand or relocate your company to the Grand Junction, Colorado area. She served as an Army as an Aviation Officer flying OH-58s for 8 years, where she deployed twice to Iraq- first as an AS3, then as a Company Commander of an attack helicopter company. She is also a self-proclaimed "Army brat from a family of Army brats,” and her husband served as an Army pilot as well. Our Sponsor: StoryBox- People trust each other more than advertising. Pablo has been south of the border in Mexico working hard retrieving kidnapped persons and doing many other things for well over a decade. I know him personally and can say that he is a gracious man, he speaks deliberately and takes in as much information as he can before he responds. At first, it doesn’t seem like much but after learning about his past and what he used to do for a living, it all started to make more and more sense. He now runs the AS3 Driving Academy where he trains protectors on Waze to take their game to the next level with one of the tools we use more often than anything else, our vehicles. I have taken a course from them (https://byronrodgersmotivation.com/as-solution-tactical-driving-course-review/) and I can honestly say that my eyes were open in many ways to improve my driving skills in just 48 hours. As one of the sponsors for the Protectors Symposium 2.0 I am honored to join forces with Pablo and his cadre. This interview is one of the most eye-opening, real-world interviews I’ve done so far this year… Don’t miss it! Then join us for the Protector Symposium 2.0 and go check out AS3 to improve your skillset with one of your most important tools, your vehicle.
This episode Justin and Mark start rough with shape for the show. Crystallization is happening! Since Mark wants to know how Justin gets traffic to Speak, or any of his projects, that becomes the mastermind portion of the show. Mark talks about his old AS3 flash games he made when he was learning to program, Unity, and a mental model Mark borrowed from experience playing racing games as a child. Justin's thinking about how Mark's "Engines vs Power-ups" model could have helped Nugget's initial format and the power of blogging. We discussed Tim Ferriss's blog post on the downsides of fame, Bill Murray's response and how the article relates to the idea of "Luck Surface Area". Finally, we talked about Mark's progress building the site (and making screencasts out of the process) and our goals for next week. The original show plan: an update on progress from last week a masterminding segment news and ideas on their minds goals for next week. In honor of All Stars 4 having finished filming, we talk about how All Stars can be fixed after the misstep that was AS3. AS3 E 7: Nancy Pel-oh-no-she-betta-do! UCB Drag Race winner, Rose Arscot, joins the boys in the Malibu Pool to dish! They dip a toe or three into the political landscape as they touch on Rupaul's recent controversy, and the impact drag has had on all of their queer lives. Then, they laugh their way through the penultimate AS3 episode. Is Morgan's hissing the funniest (albeit, unintentional) moment, thus far? Probably yes. Plus, Rose hands the boys their favorite new catchphrase, which promptly gets used upwards of five hundred times. Get into it! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hi folks,In this episode, I have a great conversation with Lorna Quinn. Lorna is an Actor (I’m going with Actor not Actress – we clarify why on the show) that has a built up a great portfolio of work over the last number of years since graduating from ‘Drama and Theatre Studies’ in UCC. She has been in Theatre (‘Private Lives’ most recently at the Gate), on TV (‘Fair City’ & ‘Love Hate’) and even on the big screen (‘Dare to Be Wild’). She’s also from Longford which is how I know her and how I was able to entice her to come on to the 1% Better Podcast We talk about her career, growing up, being in Longford girl-band AS3 (which is due a re-launch in the near future we hope– make it happen, Lorna). She was also voted Best Actress at the ‘Stellar Shine Awards’ in 2016.Just some of the areas we talk about include:Starting drama classes quite late, growing up in Longford & having great fun which helped Lorna grow in confidenceJoining the Longford Musical SocietyBeing in the Longford Girl Band, AS3, at 16 which gave Lorna another taste of performingApplying for and getting a place on ‘Drama and Theatre Studies’ in UCC and bit by bit finding her feet in the class and the groupThe monkey on the shoulder and keeping Matilda in controlFirst stand out/break through moment getting cast in the role of ‘Olive’ in ‘The Odd Couple’ in first year in UCC and again in second year, being cast in the role of ‘Margarethe’ in ‘Copenhagen’ by Michael Frayn. Episode 8 of ASP or shall we say AS3, since there is only three people on board this episode, is chalk full of laughs and explicit humor. This one is probably not for the kids this week. We discuss more WoW, more LBP, Gears 2, and Left 4 Dead. We also recount stories of our favorite voice talents and games with memorable voice acting. Much fun was had during the breaks so they have been kept in for your listening pleasure. There will be no ASP next week because we will all be in disparate locations for T-Givin' break.Download
