Hey there fellow true crime enthusiasts! Pour yourself a drink, and join us as we talk about the Seaport Buffet Murders that occurred in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, NY. In 2019, a man walked into the Seaport Buffet with a hammer targeting Asian males. He beat 3 men to death while telling individuals who were not Asian that he was not there for them. These senseless murders shocked New York and sparked a debate about hate crimes and mental health. Also, we'll be trying beer from Wild East Brewing Co. located in Brooklyn. This month we are giving a bit of our space to a few med student colleagues of ours who have been working alongside our own Dr. Ben Forestell to create a really neat reflection about the COVID-19 pandemic. Tales from the Front Line: A Pandemic Podcast The Novel Coronavirus 19 pandemic is an event to be remembered in the history books, the epidemiology texts, and healthcare seminars. The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been discussed endlessly since early 2020. Frontline workers have been reported on extensively but what about their own stories? Since the pandemic began, frontline workers including emergency physicians have worked to save their communities from COVID-19. Their stories deserve to be heard Tales from the Frontline brings us back to the dawning of the epidemic through the lens of three emergency physicians – Dr. Teresa Chan, Dr. Kevin Dong and Dr. Jonathan Sherbino. The podcast explores the origins of the pandemic and initial reactions by providers to the news. The uncertainty is palpable, fear is brewing, and no one knows how long this will go on for. In this stand-alone special, we take you back to March 2020. The pandemic has arrived, and with it questions around transmission and severity abound. There is no playbook and policies change every day in the emergency room. As the cases grow, emergency physicians become increasingly aware of their role in fighting this virus as frontline healthcare workers. The perspectives provided by the doctors in the episode will give audiences a better understanding of what it felt like to be part of the initial task force that faced the virus head on. With the sounds of the emergency room in your ears, our experts bring you right into the doctor's charting room during this time. Narrated and written by Katie van Kampen, a third year medical student and storyteller, the podcast grew from a love of narratives and wanting to give doctors a platform to reflect on the origins of the pandemic. The pandemic started not with a bang, but with a whimper. In March 2021, a 21-year-old man murdered eight people, including six women of Asian descent, at three spas in Atlanta, Georgia. The act of violence was one of the most dramatic assaults in a wave of anti-Asian hate that surged during COVID. For many, the tragic events became a galvanizing moment, reigniting a sense of collective identity and political engagement within Asian American and Pacific Island (AAPI) communities. A new documentary on PBS, Rising Against Asian Hate: One Day in March, spotlights the movement to turn grief into action and address the challenges that exist when it comes to prosecuting anti-Asian hate crimes. Executive producer Gina Kim is an Emmy-nominated producer, and the film features narration from actress Sandra Oh, original music by Jon Batiste and is directed by Titi Yu. Join Laura and Gina for this impactful conversation on combating anti-Asian hate.“Out of the hate crimes that were being prosecuted against Asian Americans, only 3% ended in a conviction, which is incredibly low.” - Gina Kim". . . On this special intensely focused new episode of Light ‘Em Up we drill deep and focus the light of the truth on Asian Hate Crimes and the fear that has gripped the AAPI communities across our nation. On February 27th in only 120 minutes 7 New York Asian women (all members of the AAPI community) were attacked. The FBI defines hate crimes as “criminal offense[s] against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.”These are not random attacks – they are targeted and intentional.Brutal hate crimes have resulted in the deaths of 4 New Yorkers recently.A 62-year-old grandmother, GuiYing Ma, was brutally attacked with a large rock while sweeping the sidewalk in the Corona neighborhood of Queens, NY in November, 2021. So severely beaten, she laid in a coma from late until dying on February 22, 2022.On January 15, 2022 a homeless man in an unprovoked attack shoved Michelle Alyssa Go, 40, to her death in front of a Times Square subway train.  Go was hit by the train and then run over.  On February 13, 2022 Christina Yuna Lee, 35, was stabbed 40 times and left to bleed to death on the floor of her apartment bathroom by an attacker who pushed in the door after following her home. The individual arrested for this heinous crime has a lengthy prior criminal history having been arrested 7 times in the past 7 years and suffers from a history of mental illness.Yao Pan Ma, a Chinese immigrant, was beaten to death as he collected cans in East Harlem in April of 2021 – he died of his injuries on New Year's Eve, 2021.On Tuesday March 16, 2021, Robert Long was accused of shooting 8 people to death, 6 of whom were of Asian descent, in Cherokee County and Atlanta, GA.Aggression and hatred towards people of Asian descent is nothing new in the United States. America has a past deeply rooted in fear, hate, and violence. A dark cloud of hatred has cast its shadowy grip over America. If you really want to track the genesis of hatred directed against Asians and Asian-Americans, it can be traced all the way back to the Page Act, in 1875.  The Immigration Act of 1882, also known as the Chinese Exclusion Act, provided for the exclusion from the United States of ALL persons from China – which wasn't repealed until 1943 - to the internment of Japanese, many of which were U.S. Citizens from 1942-45.Light ‘Em Up has uncovered that in 16 major cities across the country, anti-Asian hate crimes had more than doubled between 2019 and 2020.After each incident, Asian-American groups and elected officials have come out in force demanding more be done to address violence against members of their community. Will it take more policing or better social programs to seriously address this crisis? An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere.  We all should be deeply concerned. We'd like to thank our friends at Feedspot, as recently we were honored by being ranked #10 in their most recent poll out of the 40 Best Criminal Justice Podcasts.  Visit their blog at www.Feedspot.com or simply follow this link: Best 40 Criminal Justice Podcasts You Follow in 2022 (feedspot.com)And for all your news and current affairs check out our friends at Newsly by visiting https://newsly.me.  Use this promo code to launch your savings L1GHTEMUP.In a time of division, facts unite!Phil Rizzo, Executive Producer

Podcast #22 CO2, Asian Hate Crimes and Hamas Welcome back friends to In My Right Mind. I am Russ Andrews and as always, I am joined by the silver tongued PJ Jaycox. How goes it PJ? SOVIET ERA CENTRAL PLANNING AND THE GLOBAL WARMING HOAX: Now PJ, do you remember how the Soviet Union would publish 5 yr & 10 yr economic plans. Remember how many of the plans they actually met? ZERO. Exactly ZERO. China still promulgates 5-yr economic plans.  The reason I ask is that Pres. Joey Dingbats now has a 10-year version of central economic planning. In reality, it is more religious doctrine than it is economic policy because it has to do with a 10-yr plan to drastically reduce CO2 emissions here in the racist, misogynist, polluting US of A. PJ, what percent of global CO2 emissions are generated here in our miserable, horrible country? According to Joe Dementia and the WSJ, “The U.S. accounts for less than 15% of all global CO2 emissions.” “Emissions in the U.S. and Europe have been falling since 2005 as natural gas and renewables have replaced coal power. But rising emissions from China have swamped these declines. At the Paris climate summit in 2015, China committed only to begin reducing emissions in 2030, and it has continued to build coal plants and expand industrial production. China's CO2 emissions increased by more between 2015 and 2018 than the U.K.'s total emissions in 2018. “All of the CO2 commitments made in Paris, including Barack Obama's to reduce U.S. emissions by 26% to 28%, would reduce the Earth's temperature increase by a mere 0.17 degree Celsius by 2100—not even close to the 1.5 degrees that is supposedly needed to head off doomsday. Yet Joey Dingbats now wants to double down on Mr. Obama's futile climate gesture” to a 50% reduction in CO2 by 2030. BTW, the economic cost to achieve the 0.17 degree C reduction in temperature…that's 0.3 deg F would be approx $100 tyn, or 41.6% of the planet's current net worth.  Now PJ, does your thermostat even allow you to turn the temp down by 0.3 deg F? Try that at home folks, and let us know how it works out…at a cost of $100 tyn. The Party of Science and full-blown idiots! The POS! “Amid last year's Covid-19 lockdowns, greenhouse gas emissions fell to about 21% below 2005 levels. In other words, even with the economy shut down and a large share of the population stuck at home, the U.S. was less than halfway (42%) to Mr. Biden's goal. The Biden goal will require the electric grid to be totally rebuilt in 10 years. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, the U.S. will also have to double its share of carbon-free power to 80% from 40% today—half of which is now provided by nuclear—to have any hope of achieving Mr. Biden's pledge. All coal plants would have to shut down, and natural gas plants would be phased into obsolescence. Think of the wasted infra-structure and loss of capital…Wind and solar energy would have to increase six to seven-fold. The Obama Clean Power Plan, which the Supreme Court blocked in 2016, looks modest by comparison. It sought to reduce CO2 power emissions by 32%. Most homes would also have to be electrified. So if you like your gas stove, you won't be able to keep it. Now, what would achieving Biden's climate goals look like in practice? Following is from the May 11 WSJ: “The International Energy Agency, the world's pre-eminent source of energy information for governments, has entered the political debate over whether the U.S. should spend trillions of dollars to accelerate the energy transition favored by Biden. Again, the plan to use far more “clean energy” and far less hydrocarbons—the oil, natural gas and coal that today supply 84% of global energy needs. The IEA's 287-page report released this month, “The Role of Critical Minerals in Clean Energy Transitions,” is devastating to those ambitions. A better...

Little did we know, the timing of it all would surface a much more alarming conversation… Ever since the rise of COVID-19, there has been a MAJOR increase in hate-crimes against the Asian community. But as much as people want to believe that these crimes are “pandemic-related”, the reality is racism against Asians is much more deeply rooted. In the last several weeks, Asians all across America (especially elder Asians) have been brutally murdered and attacked. So why is no one talking about it? Julia joins us today for an extremely vulnerable conversation addressing what exactly is happening in the Asian community right now, and how we can answer their cries for help (plus some fun travel hacking tips, of course).
