We’re a band of political nerds, operatives, trolls, and sometimes experts on local, state (FL), and national politics. Why did we pick the name “The Yard Sign”? Well if you’ve ever been a part of the political process, you know the debate that’s been hap

In this lively episode of "The Yard Sign," Florida's original political podcast, hosts Johnny Torres and Anibal Cabrera dive into a mix of humor, personal anecdotes, and political commentary. The duo kicks off with lighthearted banter about Anibal's recovery from illness, joking about his "little blue pills" and pharmacy mishaps, before sharing stories of their co-hosts' absences and a funny encounter with another host's girlfriend. They discuss a scandal in the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office involving plagiarism and cheating on FBI courses, sparked by a scorned wife's email, praising Sheriff Chad Chronister's handling while noting the systemic issues. The conversation shifts to generational differences, with Gen Alpha emerging as surprisingly conservative, and the decline of nightlife as younger crowds prefer daytime raves. They lament aging politicians like Mitch McConnell and Nancy Pelosi clinging to power, advocating for term limits and retirement. The hosts also touch on pop culture, from binge-watching "The Newsroom" to JK Rowling's triumphs, and express excitement over Trump's second term, joking dreaming up White House additions like a putting green. The episode wraps with a mockery of the "No Kings" protests, celebrating America's rejection of monarchy, and a fast-food debate crowning Burger King's superiority. Anibal shares his wife's a cappella competition in Ohio, and the hosts tease upcoming political events and guest appearances, including potential county commission candidates. Packed with laughs, local insights, and unfiltered takes, this episode is a rollercoaster of Tampa flair and political spice. **Topic Chapters with Timestamps:** - 00:00:22 - Intro and Anibal's Health Banter - 00:02:06 - Co-Host Absences and Girlfriend Stories - 00:05:25 - Hillsborough Sheriff Plagiarism Scandal - 00:09:15 - TikTok, Gen Alpha, and Nightlife Decline - 00:16:12 - Aging Politicians and Term Limits - 00:21:40 - Pop Culture: Newsroom, West Wing, JK Rowling - 00:46:01 - Trump's Second Term and White House Ideas - 01:04:17 - "No Kings" Protests and Fast Food Debate - 01:17:20 - Parking Woes and Tampa Food Scene - 01:19:15 - A Cappella, Political Events, and Closing **YouTube Tags:** The Yard Sign, Florida politics, Tampa podcast, Hillsborough Sheriff scandal, Chad Chronister, Gen Alpha conservative, term limits, Trump second term, No Kings protests, Burger King vs McDonalds, Tampa nightlife, JK Rowling, a cappella competition, political podcast, Johnny Torres, Anibal Cabrera

In this engaging episode of The Yard Sign, Florida's original political podcast hosted by Johnny Torres, guest Marco Rivera—a Puerto Rican political commentator—joins for a lively discussion blending Latin American geopolitics, U.S. foreign policy, and Tampa Bay sports fervor. Kicking off with intros and reflections on multiparty politics in Latin America versus the U.S. two-party system, the duo highlights Puerto Rico's cultural fusion as a "blend of U.S. and Central America," touching on statehood frustrations and everyday governance judged by garbage pickup, road paving, and festive parties. They pivot to Trump's bold authorization of CIA operations against Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, crediting Marco Rubio's State Department role for refocusing on the Western Hemisphere after decades of neglect. Drawing from personal anecdotes, they lament Venezuela's fall from an oil-rich "franchise of America" under Chávez to a "Hispanic Gaza Strip," rife with corruption, Chinese infiltration, and resource grabs in neighbors like Guyana and Colombia. The conversation explores ulterior motives—untapped oil reserves potentially slashing U.S. gas prices below $2/gallon—while praising strong opposition ready to restore democracy, contrasting it with Cuba's entrenched complacency and the end of the wet foot/dry foot policy under Obama. Energy tangents critique renewables' inefficiencies per thermodynamics, favoring "all of the above" approaches amid nuclear deals in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Shifting to scandal, they dissect Telegram leaks exposing crude chats among young Republicans, predicting long-term fallout on party recruitment and optics. The episode culminates in Tampa Bay Buccaneers hype, crowning Baker Mayfield MVP for his second-year turnaround from "retire" calls to leading the NFL's best record, crediting coach Todd Bowles' tactical grit. Casual fans unpack football's chess-like strategy versus soccer's one-on-ones, debating the run game's counterintuitiveness. Sports talk extends to baseball woes: why the Rays flop in football-crazed Tampa (a "tech town" with Lightning loyalty trumping bandwagon vibes), cultural disconnects in Hispanic communities, and Miami's distraction-fueled apathy. They muse on Orlando's untapped baseball potential and St. Pete's logistical stadium pitfalls, ending on Tampa's rising identity beyond Busch Gardens, fueled by Grammy-winning locals like Doechii. **Topic Chapters:** 00:00:00 - Intro & Puerto Rican Politics 00:05:55 - Trump vs. Venezuela: CIA Ops & Maduro Pressure 00:15:41 - Venezuela's Collapse & Latin American Corruption 00:20:34 - Ulterior Motives: Oil, China, & Resources 00:23:24 - Energy Debates: Nuclear, Solar, & Thermodynamics 00:25:17 - Telegram Leaks: Young GOP Scandal Fallout 01:06:56 - Tampa Bay Bucs: Baker Mayfield MVP Hype 01:18:20 - Football Strategy vs. Baseball Tactics 01:22:34 - Rays Stadium Woes & Tampa Sports Culture 01:35:12 - Lightning Loyalty & Tampa's True Identity **YouTube Tags:** The Yard Sign podcast, Florida politics, Trump Venezuela, CIA operations Maduro, Latin America geopolitics, Puerto Rico statehood, Baker Mayfield Bucs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, NFL MVP 2025, Telegram leaks Republicans, young GOP scandal, oil reserves Guyana, China Latin America, wet foot dry foot policy, Tampa sports culture, Rays stadium debate, Lightning hockey, Marco Rubio State Department, Johnny Torres podcast Join The Yard Sign as we discuss the latest in US politics, including insights on Marco Rubio and the current political news in Florida. In this episode of The Yard Sign, Florida's original political podcast, hosts Johnny Torres and David Cabrera welcome back PR expert and veteran Travis Horn for a lively mix of banter, breaking news, and sharp political analysis. Kicking off with lighthearted chats on stand-up comedy—praising Austin's scene, Joe Rogan, and Jim Gaffigan's "steakhouse laugh"—the trio dives into the bombshell Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal brokered by President Trump. They break down key components like the release of all hostages within 72 hours, Israel's swap of 250 life-sentence prisoners and 1,700 detainees for around 40 captives (half presumed dead), Hamas's arms laydown, IDF withdrawal, humanitarian aid resumption, and a new civilian Palestinian authority. Horn highlights Arab nations turning against Hamas, while Torres notes the deal's timing amid ongoing Gaza bombings and media skepticism from outlets like NBC. They react to rare bipartisan praise from Sen. Tim Kaine and tie it to Trump's Nobel buzz, contrasting it with ABC's Obama Nobel throwback shade. The conversation shifts to the unnoticed government shutdown (now week two), with furloughed feds getting paid vacations and essential workers grinding unpaid. Touching on economic wins like reversing the deficit for the first time in 15 years under Treasury guidance, they speculate on midterm impacts amid tariff battles and immigration focus. A quick pivot to the U.S.-Venezuela tensions sees Qatar mediating as Trump deploys 10,000 troops to Caribbean bases like Puerto Rico, striking "civilian boats" (read: cartel speedboats with khaki packages) while Rubio pushes Maduro's ouster. Banter ensues on Puerto Rico tales, La Perla neighborhoods, and corporate getaways. Fast-forward to DOGE Florida under new CFO Blayson Goglia (ex-Government Gone Wild YouTuber), who blasts Hillsborough County's wastes: $750K for a St. Pete mayor statue, $500K "leadership portal" (basically a YouTube course), and auto allowances amid ballooning budgets despite modest population growth. The group laments local GOP infrastructure failures, like unorganized District 5 races, and predicts Josh Wostel's principled reelection fight in blue-leaning Tampa. Wrapping with a Danish study on 321 Palestinian refugees (63% convicted, 55% on welfare; second-gen at 34% convicted, 37% welfare), they decry Europe's immigration woes paralleling U.S. debates. The episode closes on a humorous note with a skit on dodging NYC tickets by sympathizing with "Donnie" (cops), plus plugs for VFW 4321 karaoke and pop-up chef events. In a triumphant return after a much-needed hiatus, "The Yard Sign" podcast—Florida's original political powerhouse hosted by Johnny Torres and David Cabrera—kicks off with renewed energy on October 2, 2025. Motivated by recent seismic events like the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the duo reflects on their 191-episode legacy, the explosion of conservative influencers flocking to Florida, and the need for fresh perspectives, including pop culture infusions and new voices like a Puerto Rican co-host and returning guests. With producer "Patriot Mike" (a nod to his New England Patriots fandom) at the helm, they dive into the week's hottest topics: the groundbreaking announcement of Bad Bunny as the Super Bowl LIX halftime performer, courtesy of Jay-Z and Roc Nation. The hosts unpack the cultural pride for Latinos, Bad Bunny's meteoric rise from Puerto Rican grocery bagger to global icon (net worth ~$50M), his political controversies (advocating Puerto Rican independence and socialist vibes despite U.S. ties), and Republican backlash over his fluid sexuality and fashion—drawing parallels to Prince's iconic 2007 show and dismissing boycotts as self-sabotage. They highlight the NFL's international push (aiming for 36 global games) and how this taps into 750 million Hispanics worldwide, predicting a fun, boundary-pushing spectacle that prioritizes global viewers over "rich white" stadium crowds. Shifting north, they touch on New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani's rising profile amid urban progressive stirrings, teasing deeper dives into his "fortune teller"-esque influence on city politics. The episode culminates in a kiddie-pool primer on Florida's wide-open 2026 gubernatorial race to succeed Ron DeSantis, amid Trump-DeSantis fence-mending. Torres and Cabrera endorse U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds as the frontrunner—praising his finance background, Naples roots, Trump endorsement, sheriff slate, and record $31M haul—positioning him as more qualified than DeSantis with state-federal experience. They caution Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez against jumping in too soon (advising congressional bids instead to avoid career burnout), dismiss Casey DeSantis rumors post-nonprofit scandal, and note House Speaker Paul Renner's northern base as a debate foil. On the Dem side, ex-Rep. David Jolly's centrist switcheroo gets a polite nod but slim odds in a +2M GOP voter state. Wrapping with calls for more primaries and Icarus warnings for overambitious risers, the hosts urge listeners to like, share, and subscribe for weekly Thursday drops at 5 PM ET—blending politics, culture, and unfiltered banter for Florida's evolving electorate. **Topic Chapters:** - 00:00:25 - Show Relaunch & Hiatus Reflections - 00:08:02 - Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Bombshell - 00:09:32 - Zohran Mamdani's NY Political Stir - 00:47:01 - Florida Gubernatorial Race Breakdown - 01:11:19 - Candidate Spotlights & Future Predictions - 01:11:59 - Outro & Calls to Action **YouTube Tags:** Bad Bunny Super Bowl, Florida Governor Race 2026, Byron Donalds Governor, Jeanette Nuñez Politics, Ron DeSantis Successor, Zohran Mamdani NY, Puerto Rican Pride, NFL Halftime Controversy, Trump DeSantis Feud, Hispanic Vote Florida, Conservative Podcast Return, Charlie Kirk Assassination, Jay-Z Roc Nation, David Jolly Democrat, Paul Renner Speaker

From https://www.votericosmith.com/about/ The legacy of the Smith family is deeply woven into the fabric of Hillsborough County. It was here that Rico watched the tireless commitment of his grandparents, as they toiled day after day to build a life and create opportunities for the generations to come. His parents, emblematic of hard work and community spirit, passed down these values to Rico. This isn't just any county to Rico; it's home, the soil where his family's dreams germinated and flourished. Second Lieutenant Ronrico K. Smith isn't just any serviceman. He holds a crucial role as a Finance Officer at the 927th Air Refueling Wing, MacDill AFB. Before this, as the NCOIC of Biomedical Equipment, he ensured the readiness of 2,800 medical devices, equating to a staggering $19 million in assets. Rico's commitment to the United States Air Force since 2016 isn't just about serving his country but is also a testament to his dedication to continuous self-improvement. Rico's journey of self-improvement was further bolstered by his academic pursuits. At Trident University International, CA, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, building upon his Associate of Science degree from CCAF Maxwell AFB and Biomedical Technician training at Fort Sam Houston. These educational accomplishments, along with his leadership training at MacDill AFB, provided a strong foundation for his multifaceted career. TOPICS: Biden Laptop Crisis, DeSantis Immigration Bill, Presidential Primaries Guest: Leo Genko Hosted by Jonny Torres & Anibal Cabrera #politics #news #florida The Hunter Biden laptop controversy refers to a series of events surrounding a laptop allegedly belonging to Hunter Biden, the son of U.S. President Joe Biden. The laptop was reported to have been abandoned at a computer repair shop in Delaware, where its contents were later handed over to the FBI. The controversy erupted during the 2020 U.S. presidential election campaign and has since generated significant debate and speculation. The laptop's contents were subsequently leaked to the public, revealing personal emails, photographs, and other documents purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden. Some of these materials raised questions about Hunter's business dealings in Ukraine and China, as well as his connections to foreign entities. The controversy gained traction due to its potential implications for Joe Biden, as his political opponents suggested that the laptop's contents could implicate the president in corrupt activities. However, the authenticity of the laptop and the veracity of its contents have been the subject of intense scrutiny and skepticism. Some experts have raised concerns about the chain of custody of the laptop and its questionable sourcing. Additionally, numerous media outlets and fact-checkers have found inconsistencies and discrepancies in the alleged evidence presented, casting doubt on its reliability. The controversy has become highly politicized, with supporters of former President Donald Trump using it as ammunition against Joe Biden, while his defenders dismiss it as a politically motivated smear campaign. The media landscape has been polarized, with conservative outlets amplifying the allegations and liberal outlets downplaying or dismissing them. Despite the initial frenzy surrounding the Hunter Biden laptop controversy, it has largely faded from public discourse. The lack of concrete evidence and the absence of legal consequences have contributed to its diminishing significance. However, it remains a contentious topic among political partisans, illustrating the broader issue of weaponized information and its impact on public perception and trust in institutions. Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, has been a prominent figure in conservative politics, and his immigration bill has generated significant attention and controversy. The proposed legislation aims to address immigration-related issues within the state of Florida. The bill takes a tough stance on undocumented immigrants and seeks to enhance border security. One key aspect of the bill is its intent to cooperate closely with federal immigration authorities. It seeks to ensure that state and local law enforcement agencies work in tandem with federal officials to enforce immigration laws more effectively. This collaboration aims to identify and apprehend individuals who have entered the country unlawfully or have violated immigration regulations. Furthermore, the legislation proposes penalties for sanctuary cities that fail to comply with federal immigration policies. It seeks to hold these jurisdictions accountable and discourage policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement agencies. The bill aims to protect public safety and the rule of law, emphasizing the need for cooperation between all levels of government. Critics of the bill argue that it promotes an overly aggressive approach to immigration, potentially leading to racial profiling and creating an environment of fear within immigrant communities. Supporters, on the other hand, applaud DeSantis' commitment to enforcing immigration laws and protecting the interests of Florida residents. They argue that the bill prioritizes public safety and ensures that the state's resources are used to address pressing immigration issues. \ The Yard Sign is a weekly political podcast presenting a different perspective on the week's local, state, and national news and politics.
