Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast, the show where we tackle cinema's biggest box office failures and decide if they deserve a second chance. Troy and Brad bid farewell to the cinematic "bombs" of 2024 with an ambitious journey into the American frontier. Their latest viewing: Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, a three-hour epic Western directed by none other than Kevin Costner. Banking on his vision, Costner poured $38 million of his own money into the project, envisioning it as the first chapter in a four-part saga that weaves together the lives of diverse characters navigating the rugged American Midwest. However, whispers of production drama have cast shadows over Horizon's future, raising the question: will it ascend as a masterpiece or be remembered alongside Costner's infamous Waterworld and The Postman? To assist with discussing this epic, the gang welcomes Jose from Watch Skip Plus. As usual, Jose brings his unique take on this box office bomb and also gives an update on the Watch Skip Plus podcast. Horizon: An American Sage - Chapter 1 is directed by Kevin Costner and stars Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Will Patton, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Giovanni Ribisi. For this week's second podcast review, Josh Parham & Giovanni Lago, and I are reviewing the latest film from Academy Award-winner Kevin Costner, "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1," starring Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, Jamie Campbell Bower & Thomas Haden Church. After having its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the first part of Costner's epic western (which will stretch across four separate films) has been met with mixed reviews, some calling it a classic throwback to the great westerns we rarely see get made anymore and others saying it doesn't work as a standalone film. Does it belong on television or in the theater? What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss this, plus the film's theme, its magnificent score, the performances from the massive ensemble, whether or not it has awards potential, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Have you heard about the upcoming film, The Haunting in Wicker Park, starring Erin Moriarty (The Boys) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things)? It was inspired by the experiences of the Becker family who invited NBC News cameras to film an exorcism in their Chicago home in 1971. Hear what we've learned about this new film, and take another listen to Patrick's 2014 interview with Edwin F. Becker, who sadly passed away about a year ago. Visit BigSeance.com/239 for more info. Other Listening Options Direct Download Link In this episode: Intro :00 Today we reach back into the Big Seance archives to re-visit the two-part interview with Edwin F. Becker in 2014, about the frightening, real-life experiences that he and his family suffered through in the early 1970s in their home in Chicago. Those experiences led to NBC's Carole Simpson filming the first televised exorcism in their home in 1971. Edwin's book, True Haunting, originated as just a journal to document it all. The accounts of the activity are just amazing, and as Patrick said in his review for the book over 10 years ago, it reads like amazing fiction… except it's not. In 2012, the Paranormal Witness series featured the Becker family in an episode titled, The Tenants, and Patrick highly recommends that you check that out, if you can. The 2-part interview for the Big Seance that we're revisiting today, was one of the first interviews Patrick had that he felt was really big, he was super proud of it, and Edwin later reached out to him to tell him that to that date it was perhaps the best interview he'd ever been a part of. :50 Sadly, Edwin died about a year ago in November of 2022. But to Patrick's surprise, today he discovered that there was a major motion picture in post-production, called The Haunting in Wicker Park, directed by Gary Fleder, and starring Jamie Campbell Bower, who played Henry Creel and Vecna in the fourth season of the Netflix series, Stranger Things. iMDb says it was supposed to be released in 2023, but 2024 is just around the corner and there are no trailers yet. There are, however, some behind-the-scenes production photos. Edwin was aware and knew about the upcoming film, because he excitedly announced it in one of his last social media posts. If you know any details about the release of the film, please let us know at patrick@bigseace.com. 2:22 Audio of the historic 1971 NBC footage of the exorcism of the Becker home with journalist Carole Simpson. Thanks to Edwin, the footage exists on YouTube. The aged audio is kind of atrocious, but it's worth a listen. 5:05 The following interview was originally released in two parts in November of 2014: Edwin F. Becker's bio. 11:06 Background on Edwin's book, True Haunting. 12:41 Edwin takes us back to 1970 and a story that begins with the purchase of an old two-story building, a home made up of two apartments, each on its own floor. 14:08 “Eddie, I'm never coming down here.” Edwin brought his wife, Marsha, in to see the new home and the basement. He hoped that she would see that they could fix it up and make it into a home. She was not a fan of the basement. 21:03 Nasty fighting among the family of the deceased former owner, and a deal to keep Myra, a scary old remaining tenant for 120 days. 24:00 “We started having anomalies immediately. I believe spirits are intelligent. I don't know if they can look into your soul and see everything you've ever done, like a demon can, but I know that they can sense what you're going to do and read your mind. I learned that while we lived there, because they could anticipate my actions whenever I tried to record them on a tape recorder.” 26:49 It all started with Marsha and the phone. 27:14 Edwin finally understands that there is a problem in the home, and he calls in a priest for a house blessing. It didn't go well and he bolted! 30:05 “What do you do about it?” 35:34 The mysterious sheds in the basement. 37:42 New downstairs tenants. 39:35 Runaway dogs. And Edwin borrows a tape recorder. 44:18 “But over time, what happens is you wind up walking on egg shells, number one, because you don't know what's going to actually happen next. And you don't know what to attribute to paranormal and what not to attribute to paranormal.” 46:53 “…it started toying with me. That was the first time it actually turned on the gas on the stove.” 50:15 “I started thinking about burning the place down.” 51:25 “And ghosts lie.” Paranormal investigation, Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP), and Ouija boards. 52:18 “No. I don't go ghost hunting, because you're going to walk into a room if you know there's an energy there, and you really don't know if it's a teddy bear or a raptor. And it can come home with you. There can be attachments.” 54:07 Bullets and Yellow Pages. The Beckers turned to Joseph DeLouise, a famous Chicago psychic. 54:30 Turning to exorcism. 59:39 A phone call from Carole Simpson and NBC led to the first televised exorcism. 1:03:50 “But if you look in that YouTube piece at about the minute and a half mark, there will be a dark doorway. There is no door on that. It was a vinyl folding door. You're going to see a ghost start to come out and go back in briefly. You're going to think that a woman's skirt or a woman's robe or something is coming through the door. You're going to see the tip of it, solid as a rock, and then you're going to see it back off.” 1:07:05 “That exorcism went on for three and a half hours, and it was very, very creepy.” 1:08:25 “And then there's a clear child's voice that says, ‘mama.'” 1:08:25 “If you look at the end of the exorcism, you can tell that they were not successful. You can look on their faces and they look like they just lost a basketball game by 52 points. And they left.” 1:10:25 “The only thing we could do was get out of there.” 1:10:43 A brief discussion of the Amityville story and that film. 1:14:55 A haunted piano. 1:17:34 Edwin's advice for anyone going through a haunting, plus current ghostly activity. 1:21:54 Edwin on orbs, photography, and Hollywood's representation of hauntings. 1:26:50 A Near Death Experience (NDE) 1:31:35 Outro 1:41:19 A special THANK YOU to Patreon supporters at the Super Paranerd and Parlor Guest level! 1:42:38 The Big Seance Podcast can be found right here, on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn Radio, Amazon Music, Audible, iHeart Radio, and YouTube. The girls also talk about Joe's accomplishment in being recognized as Variety's top 10 actors to watch in 2022 event at the Newport Beach Film Festival.
The girls unpack the Wonderland article and also touch on the parallels between a Sbagliato and a filthy martini.
After Twilight, they tried to follow the formula and make a bunch more movies that would appeal in the same way. The Mortal Instruments fails to do this. The only thing really good in here is Jamie Campbell Bower. He tries hard while the "star" girl is just bad.The villain is even worse, the betrayal by one in the midst is inconsequential and what they want is not at all defined. Oh Hollywood, just hire some people with chemistry and then you might stand a chance of having a movie.Hate Watching is to movies what candy is to Halloween. Bad for your health, but addicting.
Arguably the most unhinged episode the girls have released to date. CAN WE TALK ABOUT ESQUIRE SINGAPORE?! Also why are all of joes characters so tragic?

As for the adults, Jim Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce (Winona Ryder) are thankfully reunited with the help of Murray (Brett Gelman). Now they just need to get back to the States safely. But with all the good guys come some bad guys, and they don't come much worse than Jamie Campbell Bower, aka 001, aka Vecna. The ultra-powerful supposed guard is actually highly bonded to Eleven, only with far more violent tendencies. He now feasts on those with trauma and guilt in their past, shattering their bones every time. The only person to escape his clutches thus far is Max (thanks to Kate Bush, naturally), but we're curious to see how this goes.Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 plot: What will happen? In the final two episodes of the season we're likely to see how the gang join forces in order to take down the terrifying being that is Vecna – especially now they know his real identity.During the 'Massacre at Hawkins Lab', Vecna revealed himself actually be 001 – the first superpowered child to be taken in by the lab.001 had been chipped and experimented on, with his blood being used to later breed a host of children with powers… including Eleven. He is also, unfortunately, highly narcissistic and more than a bit of a megalomaniac, believing his power prove he is above your average human. After wiping out nearly all the patients and doctors at the ward for trying to keep him detained, he found himself sparing Eleven, who he'd bonded with during his time in the lab. But she denied his request to help him take over humanity, instead overpowering him and sending him to the Upside Down before fleeing. The only other child we know to have survived is 008 – and we haven't seen her since season two. Will she make a reappearance? So let's be clear – Vecna has some scores to settle, and he's going to start with Elle."The Hawkins storyline this year is totally out of Nightmare On Elm Street," Charlie Heaton (Jonathan) told GQ. "It's really exciting to see the show go in that direction." Indeed it was, and we can expect to see reality twisted and bent out of shape by the forces of evil. Not only has Nightmare's villain Freddie Krueger been directly referenced (by Dustin: "He's the super burned-up dude with razors for fingers and kills you in your dreams!"), but he's actually physically appeared in the story in the form of actor Robert Englund, playing the aged Victor Creel, so it's possible that the NoES references have peaked now for season four. But then again, the extended franchise could still inspire the climactic two episodes. Just as long as we don't go down the route of Freddie Vs Jason – that would be a nostalgia trip too far.Elsewhere, having the fate of the world in their hands doesn't mean these hormone-ridden teens aren't finding themselves falling in and out of love. Most prominently among fans is the continuing speculation that Will Byers is battling with his sexuality – and has feelings for Eleven's boyfriend and his best mate, Mike. The cast and creators have been playing fast and loose with this story for a while now, with Will's mum Joyce saying his deadbeat dad would often mock him for being "queer" all the way back in season one because of his gentle nature. But season four definitely kicked this up a notch, and during a chat with Digital Spy, Finn Wolfhard (who plays Mike) opened up about Will's feelings for Mike "shifting towards a more endearing, kind of heartfelt, romantic affection".Confronted with the question, Finn replied: "Yeah. I think you find out slowly through the season, Will's kind of love towards Mike and I think it's a really beautiful thing."However, this was almost U-turned on by Millie Bobby Brown, who shot back at those who feel it necessary to label Will's sexuality."I think what's really nice about Will's character is that he's just a human being going through his own personal demons and issues. So many kids out there don't know, and that's OK. That's OK to not know. And that's OK not to label things," she told Variety. So we're sure this will play out sooner rather than later in volume two. Will isn't the only one with affairs of the heart to contend with either. Nancy is clearly second-guessing her choice of Jonathan over Steve, with Steve still holding a candle for his former fling too.As Jonathan and Nancy's long-distance romance looks doomed for failure, it seems only a matter of time until she reunites with her original boyfriend (seems all it took was a trip to the Upside Down and a near-death experience to make the heart grow fonder... who knew?)"I think it's really nice for Nancy and Steve to come back to each other after a few years of kind of growing from where they were," Dyer told Variety. "They're two characters that really care about each other, so it's really nice to see that again."I want something for Nancy that makes sense. I don't want her to just end up with somebody because it feels like that's what she needs to do. I think she's probably got a lot of other things going on."The mid-season finale definitely put in motion ways to get the entire gang back in one place in order to fight this year's Big Bad. Joyce, Hopper and Murray are on their way back from Russia, Eleven is still in the Hawkins lab, and the rest of the crew are either back in Hawkins or at the very least en route. But they are all wanted people – particularly Eddie, who's found himself the centre of a witch hunt by jocks who believe he started The Hellfire Club as a satanic cult and is therefore responsible for the otherwise unexplainable deaths.Last we saw of the thugs trying to get to him, they were still trying to track him down. Will they reappear after crossing state lines? And will the loveable metalhead live to fight another day?★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

On Ask Win today (Tuesday, February 12, 2019), Best-Selling Author, Win C welcomes Sharon Lopez. Sharon have been writing most of her life. When Sharon started, Sharon was writing short stories and plays. In fifth grade, some classmates and Sharon put on a play that she wrote, and this further pushed her to pursue writing. When Sharon was in high school, Sharon took a creative writing course and this is when she started writing poetry. In 1993-94 Sharon wrote her first book. In 2014, Sharon published The World Inside Stephanie's Head and later that same year Sharon published Life Is Funny That Way which is the book that she wrote in 93-94. Since then, Sharon have published a few books, and Sharon plan to continue writing as long as she have stories to tell. Sharon is inspired by many things. Mr. Schwinden was the first person that encouraged Sharon’s creative side. It was in his class that Sharon performed one of the plays that she wrote. After turning in a few assignments, Sharon’s creative writing teacher, Mr. Hutchings told Sharon that she had talent as a writer. Sharon shared some of her other work with him, and he helped Sharon grow as a writer. In 2013 Sharon was at a dark point in her life. It was then that Sharon was introduced to the work of Jamie Campbell Bower. The things he said in interviews and in his tweets came at a time when Sharon desperately needed to hear that Sharon was good enough, to be true to herself, be proud of who Sharon is, and to like what she like. It was at this time that Sharon learned about Cassandra Clare and her amazing Shadow Hunter world and decided to follow her dream to become a published author. Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Philip Winchester of NBC's LAW & ORDER: SVU. Philip Winchester reprises his role as Peter Stone on Wolf Films/Universal Television's “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” now in its 19th season. Winchester originated the role on the 2017 NBC drama “Chicago Justice.” Growing up in Montana with an American father and British mother, Winchester has a place in his heart for both sides of the Atlantic. As a teenager, he decided to devote himself to acting and moved to the U.K. to train in his craft. He was accepted to the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, all the while helping with his grandmother's bed and breakfast inn outside London. After graduation, he quickly landed two key roles. The first was in the sci-fi adventure “Thunderbirds,” starring Bill Paxton, Anthony Edwards and Ben Kingsley and directed by Jonathan Frakes. In 2007, he played villainous Edmund in the Royal Shakespeare Company's “King Lear,” in the seminal production by Trevor Nunn and starring Ian McKellen. Winchester was cast in the title role of NBC's miniseries “Crusoe” in 2008, based on Daniel Defoe's novel. Jo Elvin and Leanne Bayley are joined by Jamie Campbell Bower, the actor who came to fame in the Twilight, Harry Potter and The Mortal Instruments films and who has now made a career in music with his band Counterfeit, whose new album is out now. Jamie talks about the experience of growing up in cinema, his wake-up call at 25, and how music helps. Elsewhere on the podcast, it's time to discuss the big and the bad issues of the week. So hey, is it OK to hate big crowds of people? Is it OK to be "that" couple who do everything together? And is swearing big and clever, or really not at all? As we come ever closer to our 500th episode, we also celebrate 10 years worth of podcasts! So to continue with Thos' recent episode tradition, Nick is delving through the archives to bring you some of the best episodes of the last 10 years over the next couple of weeks. This week we re-listen to the 2007 episode "Attend The Press Junket of Sweeney Todd" where Nick spoke to Stephen Sondheim, Johnny Depp, the late Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham-Carter, Jamie Campbell-Bower, Tim Burton and many others about the film of Sweeney Todd. A true classic episode that we're thrilled to re-release!
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013) is based off a book of the same name by Cassandra Clare. At least we're told so, but we're not sure if this film even has a plot. Starring Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Lena Headey, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, this young adult modern fantasy takes our main character Clary Fray (Collins) through the Shadow World—an alternate New York City where angels and demons are fighting a never ending battle. Scott and Max struggle with the plot at times, but decide ultimately that the source material was probably better than this end product. After all, it was turned into a Shadowhunters, a TV show currently airing on Freeform (formerly ABC Family). In 20 Questions, we try to plan a sequel to E.T. Once again, we would much rather answer your questions, so send us listener mail at TheCriticalBreakdownPodcast@gmail.com or leave it in a review for us on iTunes!
On this week's episode, Alex and Brandon chat about repressed childhood memories.First up, Alex and Brandon open and review the most recent box from Marvel Collector Corps, which was filled with awesome goodies, as always. Then, Brandon picks what to talk about for this week's ABC's of Geekdom segment. After that, much to Brandon's chagrin, Alex covers a bunch of old topics from last week's show, including The Walking Dead, Julius Caesar, Pokémon, Elden Henson, more Rotom formes, Jamie Campbell Bower and his roles in the Harry Potter movies and the Twilight saga, Lightsaber crystals, Order 66 and the Jedi Purge, the Force Unleashed, the Amazing Spider-Man, John Williams, Moana, Donald Glover, Mary Jane Watson, new video games featuring older characters with beards, God of War III, Ed Boon, Crash Bandicoot, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Assassin's Creed, Detroit: Become Human, Injustice, and DuckTales. Whew. After that, the boys cover some news from the past week, including more casting for Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Rock potentially playing a role in an upcoming remake of The Wolfman, the tragic death of Anton Yelchin, Lynda Carter coming to Supergirl, Darth Vader and Saw Gerrera coming to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Bryan Cranston being cast as Zordon in the upcoming Power Rangers movie, a teaser for the next season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., more in-depth discussion of the gameplay from Injustice 2, and the newly revealed logo and plot details for the Justice League movie. After that, the boys have the first of a four part discussion about the nerdy things from their childhoods that made them into the nerds they are today. Don't worry, you won't be hearing any sob stories. Last but not least, the boys have an all-new, super-sized Fan Fic Fights to bring down the house.Don't forget to watch Brandon's pick for our collective movie watching and discussion, Whiplash. Again, this is an extremely compelling, extremely intense movie with plenty of cursing, so you have been warned. We will be talking all about that movie in two weeks (NOT next week like was said on the previous episode), so make sure to watch it and send us your emails to read on the show.Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @AtariAlex, and @Megsikouicorean.
