The Preconceived or ‘status quo' path in life typically includes a variety of steps; one major milestone is graduating from college. It's something that we are ‘supposed to do', a relatively expensive all-consuming four-year program that most of experience after high school. But how important is college? Do the academic benefits of college merit the time and cost of the endeavour? While many cite the importance of ‘the college experience' as part of our maturation, is this just an idea we've been overly conditioned to accept that then dictates a significant chunk of our life? Derek Newton joins the podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
What we're talking about: 1:33 What is a Bachelor of Arts? Don't confuse “Art” with “Arts”! While the subject Art at school involves things like painting and drawing, a Bachelor of Arts is more about humanities and exploring ideas through a particular perspective. Some people are reluctant to pursue a Bachelor of Arts because they think it won't lead anywhere, however if you look at the majors within the course, there are heaps of things you can study within a Bachelor of Arts that very clearly leads to a particular job or career. 6:42 What if you don't know what you want to do in your career? If you don't know yet what you want to do in your career, that's totally normal and completely fine. I firmly believe that if you're passionate about something and keep learning and networking in that area, opportunities will become available to you. I give a couple of examples of people who studied Arts and didn't know where it was going to take them, including Ash Barty's mindset coach, Ben Crowe. 8:56 A Bachelor of Arts works really well as part of a double degree A fantastic way to explore a greater range of areas, round out your education and have more to talk about in job interviews is to combine Arts with another degree. 10:51 The majors that are offered are important A Bachelor of Arts at 2 different universities can look completely different, so make sure you take a look at what's offered so you can choose the right one for you. I go through some of the majors offered at The University of Melbourne, Monash University, RMIT, Swinburne and Deakin to give you an idea of what your Bachelor of Arts could look like depending on where you choose to study. Great to catch up with a highly qualified lady who couldn't imagine a life without horses. Despite holding a Bachelor Of Arts and a Degree in Accountancy, Natalie Jarvis opted for a career as a horse trainer. Natalie and husband Luke are currently running a successful training operation at the beautiful South Coast hamlet of Moruya. She talks about Thorotek Racing's headquarters. Natalie says she likes to keep all horses in an outside environment. She talks about the grass track facilities, beach and river swimming availability and the peaceful bushland riding trails. The trainer acknowledges husband Luke's role in the operation. She'll long remember the thrill of producing four winners on Moruya Cup day with 130 stable clients in attendance. Natalie takes us back to childhood days at Terrey Hills where she and sister Stephanie were riding horses from an early age. She talks of her parents who had little interest in horses as their daughters were growing up. Today they're keen followers of Natalie's horses. Natalie looks back on her two stints at Sydney's Macquarie University. She remembers her two years in the Racing NSW Finance Dept. Natalie recalls her visit to an open day at the Hawkesbury TAFE equine management school and the good advice she received. She was directed to Muskoka Farm at Gunderman where her education with thoroughbreds began. She remembers a learning stint at the Hawkesbury Valley stables of trainer Warwick Hailes. Natalie fondly recalls the experience gained at the Ingham's Belmont Park spelling and pre-training farm at North Richmond. During this time she met her future husband. She looks back on the horses who got her training career under way. Natalie talks of her regular use of the Inglis Digital platform and the handy horses she's been able to source. The trainer explains that she and Luke are prepared to travel to distant meetings within a five hour time frame. Natalie acknowledges the jockeys with whom she's enjoyed successful associations. She's still riding the lion's share of trackwork herself. Had racing not gotten in the way, this lady would probably be running a busy accountancy firm by now. Like so many before her, Natalie Jarvis is totally “hooked” on racing.

Rob talks to Amanda Van Dyke, the portfolio manager for South River Asset Management, a specialist fund management company. Amanda discusses her beginnings in the mining industry, the roles of diversity and public relations in improving the perception and profitability of the business, and also her suggestions for wise future investments. KEY TAKEAWAYS Amanda’s route into the mining industry was somewhat indirect. From a Bachelor Of Arts degree to a job in the Canadian diamond industry, and then to a Masters in International Economics. From here, Amanda took a job as an investment analyst for a firm that did many deals with the mining industry. Having come from an international background in the industry, Amanda describes the many differences between operations in Canada, London and Antwerp. Investment in London and the UK is more focussed on less-speculative proposals. Amanda discusses her role in ‘Women In Mining UK’, which she helped to grown from 170 members, to over 1700. In Amanda’s opinion, this is evidence that the mining industry is bigger than most people think. It also includes departments such as finance, insurance, accounting, listings, most of which are operated out of London. This has provided many more roles for all kinds of people and has helped to diversify the industry as a whole. There is a large correlation between the more successful mining companies in terms of profitability and share price, with female participation at the board level. Diversity can definitely help mining companies to be more successful. Amanda does not believe that mining is a sexist industry, but does this that perhaps it has become relaxed in its attitudes toward the roles that women can play. She would like to see more forward-thinking in terms of women’s roles going forward. When looking at the mining industry, most people think merely of geologists and engineers. But this sector represents no more than 5% of the employees in the mining industry. Mining has a horrible brand and image in the world right now, despite the fact that more commodities are being demanded today than ever before in history. Mining is a primary industry, but unfortunately, it has been badly represented, and this needs to change. Events such as the Mines And Money London event are always evolving. They’re about taking the pulse of the industry at the time and delivering information about things such as new advances that’ll interest mining companies and investors. Amanda sees gold, silver, cobalt as commodities that may prove fruitful int he next year, mainly due to their use in technology. Manganese and nickel could also be worth investing in, as they are both components in batteries. When it comes to investments, Amanda takes a balanced approach. You need to have a bit of everything. Opportunities need to be economically attractive. They need to be scalable, and to have the potential to earn well in order to be viable and realistic. Is it financeable? Is the outlook realistic? Is it marketable? It takes time to develop a project. The issue with the mining industry is that sometimes opportunities are spotted, and saturated far too quickly. This is why Amanda prefers to invest in teams with proven success BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s big business here, versus junior business’ ‘They wear better suits!’ ‘Providing a forum and network for women in mining is vital’ ‘Diversity can seriously help mining companies’ ‘I don’t think mining is a sexist industry’ ‘Mining as an industry or career is just not as well known to women’ ‘Promoting mining as an exciting place to work, and as an important industry is very important’ ‘One of the most important factors in the mining industry is logistics’ ‘Regardless of your specialist field, the mining industry is a very exciting place to work’ ‘People are so divorced from where the stuff they use every day comes from’ ‘When it comes to investment, there’s no one important thing’ ‘I don’t buy projects. I buy shares in a company’ ‘Don’t just buy the asset. The asset doesn’t make money. Shares do’ ‘Skin in the game is really important. But it’s not everything’ ‘Mining is not going anywhere. But it needs to do a better job with its PR’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes South River ABOUT THE GUEST Amanda Van Dyke is a commercially astute senior investment and business development professional focusing on the mining and resources industry and was formerly the Chairman of “Women in Mining UK” and a member of the advisory board of Mines and Money London.
