Her position within the family, her place in society and, of course, her dress are placed under the microscope – and like colonialists in the days of empire, her emancipation is seen to be a means to a greater Islamic reformation. In recent days, France's minister of education has announced that Abayas, the loose dress many Muslims wear for modesty, will be banned from schools. Apparently, a piece of clothing is an affront to French secularism and, yet again, another sign of separatism. In the UK, the former prime minister likened burka-wearing Muslim women is a those who chose to look like letterboxes and bank robbers. Young Muslim women are subject to a barrage of what can only be called propaganda, traducing their religious dress and promising to liberate them from their religion. To help us understand how this works and to caution against some of the extremes by which the community can handle this onslaught. Lauren Booth is a broadcaster turned activist and author. In this episode I sat down with my friend Abdulkhaliq who recently got married this past year. Before this conversation, I really didn't know much about relationships in Islam besides what the media portrays. I enjoyed hearing more about what relationships and marriage look like in his faith and debating our perspectives from my Christian point of view.
It's Monday, February 6th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Young Muslim woman in Indonesia comes to Christ Ruth, a 26-year-old Indonesian woman, was born into a Muslim family where 86% of the people follow the false god known as Allah. Since 2009, she has had a vivid, recurring dream. She would walk up a hill, over and over again, feeling very tired. Later, in junior high school, the dream came again for two weeks. Except this time, she said, “I was not alone—I walked with a man. But when I woke up, I did not feel tired.” When she told the dream to a new Christian friend at school, the Christian girl said, “I think I know that man.” After showing her a picture of what some painters believe Jesus looked like, Ruth said, “Yes! Who is He?” That prompted the curious Muslim girl to secretly buy and read a Bible, reports International Christian Concern. After graduating from high school, she worked in a beauty clinic in Jakarta where she took off her hijab, or Muslim head covering, because she felt uncomfortable theologically with it. In October 2019, while Ruth was scrolling on TikTok, she saw a quote from a church. It said, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you (John 15:16).” Intrigued, she started attending that church “without anyone knowing that I was a Muslim.” After learning more, she trusted Christ and was baptized in December 2019. After finding her Bible though, her mother discovered that Ruth had converted to Christianity, and kicked her out of the home. Today, living with a friend, she quoted Matthew 19:29 in which Jesus says, “Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for My sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” According to Open Doors, Indonesia is the 33rd most difficult country to be a Christian. Please pray for other Muslims to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior as Ruth did. French Senate ready to enshrine abortion in the Constitution On February 3rd, the French Senate passed a draft law to include abortion in the Constitution, by a close vote of 166 votes in favor and 152 against, reports Evangelical Focus. Although the Senate Law Commission had rejected the text of the draft law last week, this time the new wording of the text convinced a majority. Philippe Bas, senator of the Republicans, presented the new text, which changes the term “right” for “freedom.” Here is the text. “The law determines the conditions under which a woman's freedom to terminate her pregnancy is exercised.” Biden belatedly shoots down Chinese spy balloon On Saturday, President Joe Biden belatedly authorized a military fighter jet, off the coast of South Carolina, to shoot down a Chinese spy balloon with a missile, reports Reuters. It fell into the Atlantic Ocean. The balloon entered U.S. airspace in Alaska on January 28 before moving into Canadian airspace on Jan 30. It then re-entered U.S. airspace over northern Idaho on January 31. U.S. officials did not publicly disclose the spy balloon's presence over the United States until February 2nd. The Chinese spy balloon traveled over sensitive military sites including the Malmstrom Air Force Base in Cascade County, Montana where there are some 150 silos for intercontinental ballistic missiles, including the nuclear-capable Minuteman III. China condemned the military strike, saying the balloon was used for meteorological purposes, and that it had strayed into U.S. airspace "completely accidentally.” Those claims were flatly dismissed by U.S. officials. Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, a member of the Intelligence Committee, blasted President Biden for his belated response. SEN. TOM COTTON: “What began as a spy balloon has become a trial balloon, testing President Biden's strength and resolve. And unfortunately, the president failed that test. And that's dangerous for the American people. The president was paralyzed for an entire week by a balloon. “We should have shot this balloon down over the Aleutian Islands. We should have never allowed it to transit the entire continental United States. And I think there's a lot of open questions that the administration needs to answer to Congress on behalf of the American people about why they didn't. “I think part is the president's reluctance to take any action that will be viewed as provocative or confrontational towards the Chinese Communists. I would say what's provocative and confrontation is sending a spy balloon all across America.” As a result of the brouhaha, Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed his visit to China last week that had been expected to start on Friday. Bill Maher: Similarities between "Woke Revolution" & Mao's Cultural Revolution On Friday's broadcast of the HBO show called “Real Time,” host Bill Maher, a liberal who has increasingly told the truth, likened America's "woke revolution" to the Chinese Cultural Revolution, reports RealClearPolitics.com. In his monologue, he said we've embraced the "re-education" policies under Chairman Mao Zedong. MAHER: “Yesterday, I asked ChatGPT, 'Are there any similarities between today's woke revolution and Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution of the 1960s?' And it wrote back, 'How long do you have?'” (laughter) "Because, in China, we saw how a revolutionary thought he could do a page-one rewrite -- of humans. Mao ordered his citizens to throw off the four “olds” -- old thinking, old culture, old customs, and old habits. So, your whole life went in the garbage overnight. No biggie. And those who resisted were attacked by an army of purifiers called the Red Guard who went around the country putting dunce caps on people who didn't take to being a new kind of mortal being. A lot of pointing and shaming went on. Oh, and about a million dead. And the only way to survive was to plead insanity for the crime of being insufficiently radical and then apologize and thank the State and of course, submit to re-education, or as we call it here in America, freshman orientation." (laughter) Proverbs 12:17 says, “He who speaks truth tells what is right.” South Dakota House passes ban on ‘gender transitions' for minors And finally, South Dakota is one step closer to eliminating dangerous transgender drugs and mutilating surgeries for youth, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Last Friday, the South Dakota House passed a ban on chemical castration and cosmetic reproductive surgeries for minors in an overwhelming 60-10 vote. We talked about a few different types of Social Media including Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. Primarily we focused on its effects and how we navigate these apps as Young Muslims in America. This event was the launch of the paper 'In-between Identities and Cultures: Ms Marvel and the Representation of Young Muslim Women' by Manmit Bhambra and Jennifer Jackson-Preece. You can read the paper here: http://eprints.lse.ac.uk/110724/ Can superheroes tell us something important about changing public attitudes towards young Muslim women? To answer this question, the authors compare how young people in different locations in the Middle East and beyond react to the portrayal of the superhero Ms. Marvel as a young Muslim woman. Their findings suggest that a superhero like Ms. Marvel can create a global discourse on gender and Islam that transcends specific cultural contexts. Manmit Bhambra is Research Officer in the Religion and Global Society Unit at LSE and is coordinating its inaugural project, Strengthening Religious Cooperation in Global London. The project is exploring the impact of COVID-19 on interfaith relations and the potential for interfaith collaboration in these circumstances. Her research interests are centred around identity politics and formation, ethnic, religious and national identities as well as the broader themes of race, inclusion and minority rights. She has recently worked on research projects with young people at LSE's European Institute and Middle East Centre. She is also Lecturer in Global Politics at Imperial College London. Jennifer Jackson-Preece is an Associate Professor in Nationalism, with a joint appointment in both the European Institute and the Department of International Relations, LSE. Jennifer's research interests include: normative responses to nationalism, ethnic conflict and religious intolerance; human and minority rights; multiculturalism; minorities and migration in Europe. Since the 1990s, she has had a sustained engagement with problems and practices of minorities and migrants. Dima Issa is a Senior Lecturer of Mass Media and Communication at the University of Balamand in Lebanon. Her research has primarily focused on Arab diaspora and media consumption, looking at ways in which identity is constructed and reconstructed through space and time. In addition, her interests include gender and representation, popular culture and audience studies, new media and technologies and social networking. Before academia, Dima worked in the corporate sector in media relations, publications and website management as well as in broadcast journalism. Polly Withers is a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow at the LSE Middle East Centre, where she leads the project “Neoliberal Visions: Gendering Consumer Culture and its Resistances in the Levant”. Polly's interdisciplinary work questions and explores how gender, sexuality, race, and class intersect in popular culture and commercial media in the global south. She is particularly interested in examining how different media and cultural modalities frame, produce, and/or challenge dominant subjectivities and social relations in the Middle East and beyond. In her current work she consider how gendered images in neoliberal and commercial media practices reflect and communicate shifts in gender and sexuality norms in post-Oslo Palestine, which will shortly be expanded to incorporate Jordan and Lebanon.

I decided we need to just stop pretending that families aren't having these discussions and trying to make these critical decisions and to get it all out into the open. In this episode, I am addressing both late teens and parents. The goal of this podcast is to help families understand what "living away from home in a college environment" really means for our young women. In this podcast, I will break down what is really happening in various living arrangements and give some advice on things to consider when making the big decision. May Allah SWA make it easy for all of our families and give our young women the best of chances and environments to learn and grow. **No music was used to make this podcast- Alaa Wardi-vocals only Don't forget to message me on Instagram with comments and questions on this topic (@Mindfulmuslimah). Spiritual border-crossing and social creativity were themes in a conversation between Shane Claiborne and Omar Saif Ghobash, two people who have lived with some discomfort within the religious groups they continue to love. Ghobash is a diplomat of the United Arab Emirates and author of Letters to a Young Muslim. One of his responses to the politicization of Islam has been to bring a new art gallery culture to Dubai, creating spaces for thought and beauty. Claiborne is a singular figure in Evangelical Christianity as co-founder of The Simple Way, an intentional neighborhood-based community in North Philadelphia. One of the things he’s doing now is a restorative justice project inspired by a Bible passage — to transform guns into garden tools. This conversation took place at the invitation of Interfaith Philadelphia, which hosted a year of civil conversations modeled after the work of On Being’s Civil Conversations Project. Shane Claiborne is the founder of The Simple Way, an intentional community in North Philadelphia. He’s recently written a book, Beating Guns, about the movement he co-leads to transform America’s guns into garden tools. His other books include The Irresistible Revolution. His Excellency Omar Saif Ghobash is now the assistant minister for cultural affairs in the Cabinet of the United Arab Emirates. He was formerly UAE ambassador to France and Russia. His book is Letters to a Young Muslim. Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

Young Muslim and Arab Americans are being targeted by FBI surveillance, and this, says Sunaina Maira, colors the way they think and act. Maira describes who and what's being monitored and why; the range of emotions surveillance generates; and the ways in which Muslim Americans are pushing back against post-9/11 regimes of surveillance and repression. She also discusses the limits of both civil rights advocacy and interfaith dialogue. 2017.03.09 In a series of personal letters to his son, Omar Saif Ghobash offers a short and highly readable manifesto that tackles our current global crisis with the training of an experienced diplomat and the personal responsibility of a father. Today’s young Muslims will be tomorrow’s leaders, and yet too many are vulnerable to extremist propaganda that seems omnipresent in our technological age. The burning question, Ghobash argues, is how moderate Muslims can unite to find a voice that is true to Islam while actively and productively engaging in the modern world. What does it mean to be a good Muslim? H. E. Omar Saif Ghobash Author, “Letters to a Young Muslim” (Picador, 2017); Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Russia
RTR I MJ The terror attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, changed the way we think about politics, society and safety as the world entered the 21st century. But as the world learned the identities of the attackers, the response affected one community much more acutely: Muslims. The media coverage of the 2001 attack and other subsequent incidents in our region, including the Lindt Cafe siege in Sydney’s Martin Place in December 2014, increased the feeling among many in the Muslim community that they are not welcome or safe in the Australian cities that they call home. So, in this increasingly tense climate, how does it feel to navigate the city as a young Muslim? Dallas Rogers spoke with Western Sydney University PhD candidate Rhonda Itaoui about her research examining the Islamophobia young Muslims experience in Australia. She also explores her own experiences as a young Muslim woman and the success of campaigns like #illridewithyou in countering Islamophobia.
