On todays show Sarah Tells James and Glenn and Dwayne about the Milli Vanilli scandal, discussing the group's formation, their use of pre-recorded vocals, and the subsequent fallout. Frank Farian, a German producer, created Milli Vanilli by using the vocals of Brad Howell and Charles Shaw, while Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus provided the image and performance. The group's success was initially unquestioned, but their lip-syncing was exposed during a live performance. The discussion also touches on the broader impact of performance-driven music, the shift in industry expectations post-Michael Jackson, and the consequences for the band members, including Pilatus's tragic death. This week we are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. Captain Content reminds us that a band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. "Once Upon A Time In Cinema - Der Filmpodcast" – jeden Donnerstag um 18:00 Uhr, überall wo es Podcasts gibt! SEASON 2 EPISODE 112: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Yes. I think that's the lead story. And I don't even LIKE Jon Stewart. But it's time to recognize that we are at war. It is, for now at least, a war being conducted almost entirely inside the media world, and here's a prayer that it stays contained within those walls. But if it is, the forces of democracy need all the fighters we can find. And Stewart - who has been mad at me since 2003 and once accused me of "stealing his act" - going back to host The Daily Show at least once a week and be the Executive Producer all the other days, at least through the election, is welcomed news. For that matter, I hope it inspires Maddow - who has been mad at me since 2011 - to be on the air more often at MSNBC. Meanwhile, I have had absolutely enough of "5 Takeaways From The New Hampshire Primary." Not only is the premise hackneyed, but The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, CNN, The Hill, and Agence France Presse all used EXACTLY THAT TITLE for their versions. And all of them left out the real takeaways: Trump needed to pretend to be a human being and instead lashed out in a rage against Nikki Haley that is now continuing into a third day and last night extended to Trump threatening to "ban" from MAGA anybody who contributes to her campaign (sure - he won't take somebody else's money; his least convincing lie yet). His fuse is completely gone. He also has now claimed he defeated the sitting governor of Iowa, I guess in the primary there, and near as I can find no sitting governor of Iowa has sought the Republican presidential nomination since 1912 so maybe whatever he has, has just moved into the tertiary stage. Plus: CNN's shame. Its 10 PM the anchor - the one it preempts once a week to instead run Charles Barkley - condescendingly parroted the right wing talking point that nobody in America wants Joe Biden. She should be fired, but given her ratings, they can do something worse to her: force her to continue doing her show. B-Block (25:04) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Frank Farian, the evil genius behind "Milli Vanilli," is dead. Until I read his obituary, I had NO idea that the scam came apart when a record skipped... in BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT. NewsNation is not satisfied with you not watching it on TV. Now it wants you to also not listen to it on radio. And the Maryland State Senate - led by Democrats - is trying to explain how the new member of the State Board of Elections just got arrested as a January 6th Insurrectionist. C-Block (32:11) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: With the Abby Phillip Right Wing Talking Point and CNN's continuing lurch rightwards - even under new post-Lichtian management - I think it's time to remind you that ALL the cable news networks have already had THE meeting and tried THE lurch to the right. At MSNBC it was 20 years ago and it was highlighted by the attempt to mainstream a homophobic racist named Michael Savage, and how the President of NBC was enraged when Savage crossed the line and had to be fired.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Mit Superhits wie „Girl you know it's true“, „Blame it on the rain“ oder „Girl I'm gonna miss you“, stürmten „Milli Vanilli“ weltweit die Spitzenplätze der Charts und gewannen im Februar 1990 sogar einen Grammy als „best new artist“.
Girl you know it's - girl you know it's - girl you know it's all about Milli Vanilli this week!!! We dive deep into the tragic story of the band and the producer behind it all, Frank Farian. Sure, Frank set himself up for success, but Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, the faces of the group… eh, not so much. Those two were famously just the faces of Milli Vanilli, no matter how hard they pushed Frank to let them sing, he quite literally never gave them a voice. Maybe he had a reason maybe he didn't, that's for you to decide!!! We dive into Frank's background, what led him to create Milli Vanilli, and the gold prison Rob and Frank found themselves stuck inside. That's showbiz baby!!! Show Notes Episode 416: Milli Vanilli Were Neither A Milli Nor A Vanilli This week Host Dave Bledsoe INSISTS the person who ran up this bar tab was an imposter and he is NOT responsible for paying them! (This did not work.) On the show this week we talk about the scandal that officially ended the 1980's, even though it happened in 1990: The Milli Vanilli lip sync affair! (Turns out the real bad guy was capitalism!) Along the way we learn that some told Dave he could sing! (They were wrong, so very, very, wrong!) Then we meet our bad guy Frank Farian and a German record producer with a penchant for exploiting black musicians. (Kind of a cliche in the recording industry.) We follow Frank as he tries to cash in on this whole “rap thing” he's been hearing about by putting together a band with the right look and the right sound to make a hit! (Sadly, the look and the sound were different people.) Then we watch the rise of Milli Vanilli from the West German Club Scene to taking best new artist at the Grammys only to fall just as fast as the rose when the CD skipped at an MTV Concert. (With all the money they were making you would think they could afford a new CD for every show!) Finally, we see what happens when capitalism meets reality. (The rich get richer, the poors die of drug overdose.) Our Sponsor this week is Fast Eddie's Talent Management, who want you to know it isn't fraud unless we get caught. We open with news coverage of Rob and Fab's downfall and close with Frog Leap Studios professing their love for you girl! Welcome to 1993. Autumn, to be exact. And how was it all looking?Well, it wasn't really baggy like 1990, or rave-y like 1991, but it wasn't Britpoppy like 1995. It was all a bit…well, who knows? Can we say, a bit of a pop hinterland? And were there any clues across our ever reliant pop culture landscape for how ‘93 had shaped up? Well in a year that saw the launch of two modern icons - the Vauxhall Corsa and QVC - actually, perhaps, we'll come back to them later. Not!Back to the hinterland then. We had the ever reliant and still relatively imperial Neil and Chris, resplendent in their dayglo uniforms marching to the Village People in Moscow. Or perhaps your CD single (with 6 extra dance mixes) was celebrating the glorious invasion of Europop of Culture Beat, 2 Unlimited and Haddaway. Or maybe you were, frankly too cool for school and had bunked off to the shimmering r'n'b from SWV, Janet and Eternal. And where was Indie? What even was indie in 1993?One thing is for certain, your musical tribe in 1993 was considerably, undeniably, very untribal. But isn't waiting for the Next Big Thing - and spotting the red herrings along the way - so terribly exciting? So if it's autumn ‘93, it's definitely time for NOW That's What I Call Music 26! And joining us for this excursion back 30 (!) years, none other than author and chief rock & pop critic for The Times Will Hodgkinson. Will selects his highlights from the wonderfully packaged 40 Top Chart Hits as well exploring the wider pop culture landscape of 1993. Along the way, we discover Will's inspiration for his, quite frankly wonderful exploration of 1970's pop ‘In Perfect Harmony' and how 1973 and 1993 really had a lot more in common than you may think. We also take excursions into some of 1993's other memorable musical moments, courtesy of Bjork, London's eclectic club scene and (unashamedly) Bowie's Buddha of Suburbia (with a real cameo from Will, no less!)Expect starring (and a few understudy) roles from Meat Loaf, The Shamen, Lawrence from Denim, Stakka Bo (only a bit Stereo MCs), Crustys, Frank Farian, Hacky sacks(!) and some illicit colour photocopying - you will be shocked! All of this and much, much more! And find out why the Spin Doctors (amongst a few others) will not be returning our calls. Just when it seemed that Milli Vanilli couldn't ascend any higher, everything comes crashing down as the world learns the whole project was a sham. Rob & Fab are crucified by the media, and the scandal produces an ugly series of backstabbing and lawsuits. In the wake of this disaster, both Rob & Fab and Frank Farian will try to revive their music careers, the results of which are... well... interesting. For certain parties, however, the scars of the scandal are too deep to overcome, and the story ultimately turns from comedy to tragedy...This shit gets REAL, folks. German pop duo Milli Vanilli sold 33 million singles, including three US number ones, but harboured a shameful secret: their vocals were sung by someone else. At a promotional gig in Connecticut on 21st July, 1989, their backing track crashed - and speculation began to mount. “I knew right then and there, it was the beginning of the end for Milli Vanilli,” ‘singer' Rob Pilatus admitted to the Los Angeles Times in November 1990. “When my voice got stuck in the computer and it just kept repeating and repeating, I panicked. I just ran off the stage.″ In this episode, Olly, Rebecca and Arion reveal how impresario Frank Farian created the band from his Boney M template; ask whether the young men fronting the project took a disproportionate amount of the flack from the public; and consider if ‘Girl You Know It's True' might just be the most popular pop song ever to have a spoken word intro… Further Reading: • ‘30 Years Ago, Milli Vanilli Returned Their Best New Artist Grammy; Should They Get the Award Back Now?' By now, Stock Aitken Waterman had made a name for themselves as hitmakers — and that was begining to rub some people the wrong way. In response to the haters and the perception that they could only do disposable pop, the trio concoted a plan to prove they could make any kind of music they put their minds to. And so "Roadblock" was created, a rare groove track that was originally released without any clue SAW were behind it. Hear the full story behind what would eventually become Stock Aitken Waterman's first single under their own names. Meanwhile, the Hit Factory encountered a bit of a dry spell, with singles by Precious Wilson ("Only The Strong Survive"), Dolly Dots ("What A Night") and Laura Branigan ("Shattered Glass") all flopping. We talk to Precious and Angela Groothuizen from the Dutch girl group about the paths that brought each act to SAW. Plus, Mike Stock and, in archival audio, Laura herself talk about the two tracks they worked on together. It's a super-sized episode with some great pop music stories.
