Wade Wilson, infamously dubbed the "Deadpool Killer," was sentenced to death on Tuesday for the gruesome 2019 murders of two Florida women, crimes the prosecution described as "killing for the sake of killing." Wilson, 30, remained emotionless as Circuit Judge Nicholas Thompson delivered the capital sentence, highlighting the particularly heinous nature of the crimes. “The evidence shows the murders were heinous, atrocious, and cruel, and that the second murder was cold, calculated, and premeditated,” Judge Thompson stated. Wilson was found guilty in June for the October 2019 murders of Kristine Melton, 35, and Diane Ruiz, 43. The jury unanimously recommended the death penalty, a decision the judge upheld without hesitation, noting there was “no basis” to overrule it. Prosecutors revealed that Wilson strangled Melton in her home after a drug-fueled sexual encounter. He then stole her car and, in a chilling sequence of events, used her phone to call his girlfriend, whom he assaulted. Rebuffed by her refusal to join him, Wilson then encountered Ruiz, luring her into the car under the guise of helping her. He later admitted to strangling her before running her over multiple times, leaving her body unrecognizable. “This case was about killing for the sake of the killing,” Assistant State Attorney Andreas Gardiner emphasized during the trial. “Strangulation is the epitome of life slipping through someone's hands.” Despite the horror of his crimes, Wilson became a macabre figure of fascination, receiving thousands of letters, including explicit photos, from admirers during his five years in prison. Many supporters, including misguided women, wrote to Judge Thompson, imploring him to spare Wilson's life, citing his troubled past and mental health struggles. Wilson's defense argued that he suffered from brain damage due to drug addiction and abandonment issues, having been given up for adoption by his biological parents. His adoptive parents also pleaded with the court to spare his life, asserting that “the human is still in there.” In addition to the murder charges, Wilson was also convicted of grand theft, burglary, battery, and petit theft. During Tuesday's sentencing, Circuit Judge Thompson inquired if there were any additional matters to address before concluding the case. Wilson's defense team then rose to make a final request. His attorney stated, “I recognize that Mr. Wilson has pending cases both here and elsewhere, but he has asked me to request that the court expedite his transfer to death row within your available authority.” In response to the request, Circuit Judge Thompson noted that Wilson's other cases would not be addressed until at least September 16. Consequently, a date for his execution remains undetermined due to these unresolved charges. State Attorney Amira Fox, who has been in the legal field for 34 years, described Wilson as "the most evil" person she had ever encountered. The public greeted the sentence with applause, and Kristine's cousin Samantha pledged to witness Wilson's execution. "This will not be the last time Wade Wilson sees us in a courtroom," she declared at a press conference. Diane Ruiz's father also expressed his intention to attend the execution, lamenting, "I didn't get to tell her I love her before she was taken from us so cruelly." On this episode of Florida Matters we talk with two experts about the health impacts of vaping- both on adults and youth. We discuss the role of e-cigarettes as an alternative to conventional smoking for adults who want to quit and we take a look at a new Florida law aimed to stop children from vaping. We talked with Yiota Kitsantis, professor and chair of the Department of Population Health and Social Medicine at Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt School of Medicine. Kitsantis has a PHD in statistics and specializes in biostatistics and epidemiology. FAU published a study recently that explores the rise in vaping among youth, and Kitsantis discussed the risks of vaping. To learn more about how vaping is seen as an alternative to cigarettes for many adult smokers- and its role for smokers who want to quit- Florida Matters visited the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. There, we spoke with. Vani Simmons, a PHD in Clinical Psychology and a senior member in the Department of Health Outcomes and Behavior at Moffitt.

A rise in antisemitism in the wake of Israel's war with Hamas caught the attention of the House of Representatives this past week. Members of the House held a hearing with college presidents addressing antisemitic incidents on campuses. They also passed a resolution condemning antisemitism, including antizionism. The vote split Democrats, who raised questions about the choice to equate antizionism with antisemitism. Did Congress take advantage of a tense political moment to play a game of “gotcha?” And why did those presidents (and some members of Congress) choose to tap dance around legitimate questions about this worrying trend? The New Hampshire primary next month won't feature President Biden on the ballot. We explore why, and look at the impact independent voters could have on the Republican side of the ballot. Two Florida school districts are facing lawsuits around the removal of books from public school libraries. The state's position has raised some interesting legal questions about the right of districts to decide what content appears on the shelves and in the curriculum.

What does a small school in the American state of Florida have to do with the famous Italian statue of David in Florence, Italy? Well, the mayor of Florence and the museum where David is housed recently invited parents, students and the former principal of the school to visit. The invitation came after some parents were upset when their sixth-grade children at Tallahassee Classical School saw a photo of the statue during an art class. Sixth graders are 11 or 12 years old. Renaissance artist Michelangelo completed the 5-meter-tall statue of David in 1504. The famous work shows the Bible story of David getting ready to fight Goliath. David is represented without clothing and armed with a sling over his shoulder and a rock in his hand. Two Florida parents said, under school policy, they should have been warned that their children were going to see the image of David's statue without clothing. A third parent called the statue pornographic – or overly sexual. The principal of Tallahassee Classical school in Florida said she was asked to leave her job as a result. But school leaders claimed it was one of several reasons for her removal. The private school follows a program of studies designed by a conservative Christian college. Cecilie Hollberg is the director of the Italian museum in Florence. She told the Associated Press, “To think that David could be pornographic means truly not understanding the contents of the Bible, not understanding Western culture and not understanding Renaissance art.”The statue of David is the main reason thousands of people visit the museum, called Galleria dell'Accademia, every day. Following the controversy, visitors, including many Americans, arrived in large numbers this week to see the statue. Isabele Joles was there with a school group from the U.S. state of Ohio. She studies French and Italian art. “It's part of history,” she said. “I don't understand how you can say it's ‘porn.'”Cecilie Hollberg Brian Stapley is from Seattle, Washington. He said he was sad for the school's children. He called the statue “one of the most incredible parts of our history,” and said he feels “sorry for the children that don't get to see it.” Back in Florida, the local newspaper in Tallahassee reported a large crowd came out to a school board meeting on Monday night. Some parents disagreed with the decision of the school leaders to remove the principal. And the board chairman rejected a request from a teacher to resign.

I first fell in Mama Jane's desserts about 5 or 6 years ago when she invented "Funnel Bacon on a Stick." She took a stick of thick bacon, dipped it in funnel cake batter, fried it up and topped it with powdered sugar and a maple butter glaze. It was something. Last year it was eclipsed by a strawberry lemon ricotta funnel cake. But this year, she might even top that. Mama announced that Plant City will get a Strawberry Key Lime Funnel Cake for 2022.
