Jess and Caroline jump right in with a discussion on how we should be able to disagree with each other without it meaning the relationship is damned. They talk about those friends who just love to debate, and then try out a few This-or-Thats to see if they can get into fights with each other. Then Jess dives deep into why she's felt work overwhelm for the past little while, and they problem-solve how to prioritize schedules, in both corporate jobs and for self-employed people. In Episode 272 of the Beers & Bible Podcast, we step into Romans 6 and look at the vital connection between justification and sanctification—between being declared righteous in Christ and actually growing in holiness. Paul's famous question, “Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?” sets the tone, and we unpack why his answer—“God forbid”—absolutely destroys the idea that grace is a license to sin.We talk through the historic charge of antinomianism at the time of the Reformation and walk through three different “equations” of faith and works, showing why the biblical, Reformation view insists that true faith inevitably produces real change. From there, we tackle the idea of “carnal Christianity” and show from Scripture why a person who is truly regenerated cannot remain unchanged, even if growth is slow and messy. Finally, we explore what it means to be baptized into Christ, united with Him in His death and resurrection, and called to walk in “newness of life.” We consider our natural state as spiritually dead and slaves to sin—and the astonishing reality that in Christ we've been made alive by the power of the Holy Spirit. This episode will encourage you to take sin seriously, rest in your justification, and pursue holiness with confidence in the resurrection power already at work in you.

Ah…Thursday! The insurance money finally went into the account and I'll hopefully have my new truck by the end of the week! It'll be a nice weekend to cruise around with the windows down & the tunes cranked! In the news this morning, the government shutdown finally came to an end last night, pennies are officially done being produced, and Aaron Rodgers is selling his Wisconsin mansion for nearly $4 million! Speaking of money…Elon Musk is set to get paid $1 trillion by Tesla over the next decade, and I looked at a list of what he could purchase with all that money. In sports, the Bucks lost to the Hornets last night, Week 11 in the NFL kicks off tonight, Jameis Winston is going to start for the Giants on Sunday against the Packers, the Badger men's basketball team is off until Monday, and the Badger football team has a tough opponent this weekend with #2 Indiana. Let you know what's on TV today/tonight, and talked about a couple of unique items you can purchase just in time for the holidays, including an iPhone Pocket, and a Candy Cane opener. Office Cora joined me just after 8am to let me know what she's up to this weekend in the 715. And with Jean out, I asked you…the listener…a hypothetical question: "If you could eliminate one song from the world, what would you choose and why?" Had a fantastic story about a school that set up a microphone in the hallway and asked students to record something positive that happened to them. The school created a montage and posted them online. And check out this story about a WWII Veteran who's life was saved by a pair of lucky socks! Elsewhere in sports, Bryce Harper gets threatened by the MLB commissioner, and a very interesting stat about the outcome of NFL football games. In today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy in Canada who took a city bus for a joyride and was letting passengers off along the way, a teenager who drove a truck onto a green and did over $160,000 worth of damage to the course, a man who was accidentally shot by his own dog, a #FloridaWoman who was caught doing 107mph while driving to a Little Caesar's, and some hardcore porn got played accidentally on a ferry.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode SummaryPaul's argument moves with laser-sharp logic: God's power saves (v.16) because God's righteousness is revealed in the gospel (v.17). But that righteousness is necessary because God's wrath is revealed against sin (v.18), a response we understand as we behold God's glory in creation (vv.19–20). In this episode, we trace that flow, unpack the nature and objects of divine wrath, and follow the tragic yet honest downward spiral of human rebellion—idolatry, moral degradation, and social disorder—so we can see why the good news is truly good. The Logical Link to the Gospel (vv.16–20)Power → Righteousness → Wrath → GloryWhy the bad news is necessary for the good news to make senseThe Nature of God's Wrath (v.18)Holy, personal, and just—not impulsive human angerGod is never morally neutralWho Faces God's Wrath (vv.18–20)Against “godlessness” (irreverence toward God) and “wickedness” (injustice toward others)Suppressing the truth made plain in creation leaves everyone “without excuse”The Downward Spiral (vv.21–32)Idolatry: Knowing God but refusing to honor or thank HimSexual impurity: “Exchanges” that degrade the body (vv.24–25)Against nature (vv.26–27): Paul's teaching on created order and sexual ethicsDepraved mind (vv.28–32): A cascade of vices, broken relationships, and approving of evilWrath defined: God's wrath is His righteous, settled opposition to evil.General revelation: Creation clearly reveals God's eternal power and divine nature—enough to render us accountable.Sin's trajectory: Rejecting God leads to idolatry, moral confusion, and social decay.Heart of the matter: The essence of sin is knowing God yet refusing to glorify or thank Him.How does seeing God's wrath make the gospel more compelling rather than less?Where do you notice “truth suppression” in our cultural moment—or in your own heart? In what everyday ways can gratitude to God push back against idolatry (v.21)?How should Christians hold together truth and compassion when discussing Romans 1:26–27?Which of the vices in vv.28–32 do you see most clearly in society—and which is God exposing in you?How does Romans 1 prepare us for Paul's explanation of justification by faith that follows?Romans 1:16–17 — Power and righteousness of God in the gospelRomans 1:18–20 — Wrath revealed; truth in creation; “without excuse”Romans 1:21–25 — The “exchange”: glory for images; truth for a lieRomans 1:26–27 — Paul's appeal to created orderRomans 1:28–32 — Depraved mind and the approval of evilWhat We CoverKey TakeawaysDiscussion QuestionsScripture Highlights

Kasparas Jakucionis is back, and with him, the good (nay, DOMINANT) side of Illini basketball. They smoke a reeling Indiana Hoosiers team at the Bizarro Assembly Hall 94-69, notching their 13th win of the season. Mike Carpenter reacts during a second half which started off sloppily, but Illinois quickly regained their groove. As the game came towards its conclusion, Tomislav Ivisic had words for Luke Goode after a physical play, leading to a scrum that rekindled some long-lost hatred between the two programs. The dust settled in a half-empty Hoosier arena, as the Indiana faithful were reminded of their two-decades worth of suckitude. Too bad, so sad.
In hour two, Appel asked Jimmy how his Christmas went and Jimmy finally was able to open his PS5 that he gifted himself and shares what game he downloaded first. Jimmy Butler trade rumors continue causing the Goodfather Pat Rilery to issue a statement shooting down the rumors. We also briefly go back to when Hoch brags about his Wordle score with Coach L in light of Coach L stepping down. We also talk about the NFL Christmas Day broadcast on Netflix. Solana joins the show on his day off from the show to talk about his take on Candy Canes on National Candy Cane Day. Josh Appel admits he's never had a corn dog.
Recorded on Christmas at the "World famous" Palm Street Studio. The boys break it all down and talk about buying beer, beer stores, selling habits of other states, and how drunk the entire state of Wisconsin is. An update on how everyone's day was and also we break into all kinds of great flavors of Bird Dog Whiskey. Junior tells us all the tales of how things are going for him. Things get rowdy!

Bible Reading: 1 John 4:7-16"Look! I had just the right amount of string to attach the candy cane message about Jesus to each candy cane!" Loralee declared."Great! Now we're ready to deliver them," Loralee's mother replied. That afternoon, Loralee and her mother knocked on doors in their neighborhood. As they strolled from house to house in crisp, cool weather, Loralee looked forward to talking with people about how the red-and-white-striped candy told the message of Jesus and the sacrifice He made to forgive people for their sins.Standing on a broad porch, Loralee handed a candy cane to her neighbor Miss Zelda. "I like this candy, but I'm not sure I'll read the little story about Jesus." Miss Zelda smiled and shut the door.As Loralee and her mom turned back to the sidewalk, Loralee sighed. "Mama, I don't know if this is doing any good.""What do you mean?" asked Mama."Most of our neighbors weren't home, so we just left the candy canes hanging on their doorknobs. And the ones who were home didn't seem to care about Jesus being the real reason for Christmas.""Loralee, you want others to know about Jesus, right?" Mama asked."Of course! I gave my life to Jesus last year and trusted Him to forgive my sins, and now I want our neighbors to trust in Him too so they can be God's children.""When you began a relationship with God as His child, do you know what He poured into your heart, Loralee?"Loralee scuffed her shoe on some fallen leaves. "I don't know.""His love! The Bible tells us He pours His love into our hearts."Loralee smiled. "If God's love is in my heart, that means I have God's love to give to others.""Exactly!" said Mama. "People may not want to talk about their beliefs or hear about Jesus, but because you have God's love in you, you have something special to share. Just keep sharing God's love with others and trust Him with the rest."Loralee started walking faster. "Let's go, Mama! We have more of God's love to give to our neighbors today!" –Allison Wilson LeeHow About You?Do you ever wonder if your acts of obedience to love others really matter? God's Word tells us that when we trust Jesus to forgive our sins and give us new life in Him, He pours His love into our hearts. So when we show love to others, we're sharing God's love with them. That's a very special gift to give! Even when no one seems to care, keep sharing God's love and trust Him to use your gift to do good things. Today's Key Verse:God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (NIV) (Romans 5:5 )Today's Key Thought:God's love is in His children

In this episode I got to talk with the wonderful Lyndsey Mimnagh of Treehouse Schoolhouse. Lyndsey and I talk for a bit about home schooling and then we get to the heart of the episode, celebrating Christmas with our families in meaningful and intentional ways. This episode is full of inspiration and ideas, but also there is a lot of grace for the mom who might feel overwhelmed by Christmas when she's in a tough season. Lindsey offers fun and creative ideas, but she's also great at providing simple and practical ways for any family to have fun at Christmas. There are so many ideas for Christmas this year and next. I want to be a place that provides both.” Lyndsey Mimnagh “We can see who God has designed our children to be when they play.” Lyndsey Mimnagh “School doesn't have to be in a classroom. School doesn't even need to be in a home. School can be outside!” Lyndsey Mimnagh “If you missed the start date of advent, you can start on whatever day of December you're on! This is the freedom we need as we celebrate Christmas.” Greta Eskridge “Wherever you are at this moment in December, it's OK to say, I am going to put some of these ideas into practice this week. It's not too late!” Greta Eskridge “If you are in a season where it feels heavy and hard, and you have circumstances that don't lend themselves to doing all the Christmas things, that is OK. But also, if you are in a season where you can, or you are a person who finds doing all the crafts and Christmas activities life giving, that is OK too. We can be in both places at different times.” Greta Eskridge “What kids want and need is a calm and peaceful mom.” Lyndsey Mimnagh “Even if I want to be the Pinterest Christmas mom, if that comes at the expense of my peace, then it is not worth it for me.” Lyndsey Mimnagh “You have the freedom to do as much or as little as you can mange this Christmas because the focus of Christmas is Jesus and that is what we want to bring our kids back to over and over again.” Greta Eskridge The Greta Eskridge Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. Bible Reading: John 3:16-18"Can we have a candy cane?" asked Josh as he looked at the striped candy canes hanging on the Christmas tree."Yeah, can we? Please?" echoed his sisters, Adriane and Nicole."All right," Mom said. "But as you eat them, I want you to think about how they remind us of the reason we celebrate Christmas."Each of the kids quickly selected a red-and-white-striped candy cane from the tree. Nicole held her candy at arm's length and stared at it. "I don't really see what candy canes have to do with Christmas, except that it's the time of year when you always see lots of them. Or maybe it's because there's red on them--Christmas colors are red and green.""Nah. That's not a good enough reason," said Josh. He stared at his candy cane too. "Hey!" he exclaimed. "Part of our Sunday school verse last week said, 'By His stripes we are healed,' so the stripes can remind us of how they whipped Jesus.""That's part of the Easter story," said Adriane. "It doesn't have anything to do with Christmas.""Oh, but it does," said Mom. "It has to do with why Jesus came to earth. He came to suffer and die and take the punishment for our sins so those who trust in Him could be saved.""So maybe the red stripe on the candy cane can stand for the blood Jesus shed for us when He died on the cross," said Nicole."And the white can stand for having our sins washed away when we trust in Jesus," added Adriane.Josh nodded. "And look," he said, holding his candy cane upside down. "When you hold it this way, it's a J--a J for Josh." He grinned as his sisters started to protest. "Just kidding," he said. "It's a J for Jesus." "Excellent thinking," said Mom. "Those are all great ways candy canes remind us of the real reason we celebrate Christmas--Jesus being born into the world so He could die for us on the cross. I hope these candy canes will help you remember that--not only at Christmas, but all year long."–Jean A. BurnsHow About You?Do you get excited about Christmas and all the food, parties, and presents that go along with it? Those are all good things, but don't forget the real reason we celebrate Christmas--Jesus being born so He could die to save us from our sin.
