What, you may ask, makes for a perfect Friday crossword? We're not sure about the what, but we are about the who: Adrian Johnson, the author of today's and 5 prior NYTimes Friday crosswords, definitely knows how to make one. Both hosts found his latest to be exceptionally tricky, but, ultimately (with a little luck, a lot of experience solving past NYTimes crosswords, and a surfeit of caffeine), doable.Besides the crossword, we also have a Fun Fact Friday™️segment, and it's a really sockerooni

Who's tasted sparkling English rosé going back nearly 20 years? Ferg has; listen as he talks through the retrospective of Balfour Brut Rosé going back to 2004. Are Ferg and Lee any good at blind tasting? Obviously, no. But are they any good at working answers out based on evidence on knowledge? Also no. Listen as Ferg fails to open a wine sent by Mike at Bin Two, instead opting to open something completely different. Lee at least opens the correct wine but forgets the existence of Bandol, can't identify his favourite grape variety, and complains at his mistreatment. This mistreatment involves being sent a bottle as a gift by the aforementioned Mike at Bin Two. Ungrateful. With huge thanks to Mike for gifting Ferg and Lee bottles to try blind...we'll get the correct wine open in a future episode. For anyone looking to replicate this tasting you can get at least one of these wines from www.bintwo.com What a pair of clowns. Do you believe that Resin Bonded Bridges are exclusively a temporary or short-term solution? Lots of our colleagues around the world mistakenly believe this. It's not a secret that I am a fan of this treatment modality—I want to break down the misconceptions about them because IN THE RIGHT CASE they can be a very predictable tooth replacement option. In this episode, Dr. Salman Pirmohamed shared successes and failures and what we can learn from them to improve our clinical protocols from abutment selection to adhesive techniques. Mako's paintings have been described as a rebellion against the speed of the internet and an antidote to time. In fact, the New York Times refers to his work as a form of “Slow Art”. Rather than using conventional paint, Mako uses various pulverized minerals, applied layer by layer to create huge finished works that can only truly be seen and appreciated when the viewer is able to slow down and observe the painting for longer periods of time. It can take over 10 minutes to begin to see the multi-dimensional qualities of one of Mako's works. He takes inspiration from both traditional Japanese and contemporary American art.Although Mako's art is intrinsically full of beauty and joy, it explores the themes of trauma, brokenness and healing. He and Ty both have the experience of having lived in New York City during 9/11 and its aftermath, and also of building a ground zero teahouse that served as an exhibit gallery for local artist to share their expressions of grief and loss as the city healed from tragedy. But how do we translate this into dollars? Where does capitalism fit in when we're talking about art, meaning, personal expression and communication? This is where the conversation gets interesting! I'm so glad to be able to have Mako and Ty together in the same conversion, because they represent two different manifestations of this idea. Since Ty is in the business of helping people monetize their creativity, and as a creative person himself, he has lots of insight into this area. In fact, while Ty and his father seem to be opposites in many ways, it's interesting to see how they actually think alike when we're talking about values and what's important in life.I hope this episode inspires you to take another look at what it means to be creative, and maybe to even get a fresh perspective on the world with all its different angles and dimensions.LinksYou can explore the work of Makoto Fujimura here.Learn more about Ty and his work here and here.Timeline[2:31] Mako introduces us to the concept of pulverized minerals in his form of slow art.[3:49] The mulit-dimensional aspect of Mako's paintings is best seen in person when you can view them from all angles and take time with them.[6:25] Mako's paintings are an homage to American expressionism as well as ancient Japanese artistic traditions. [11:06] Mako describes the experience of straddling two different cultures simultaneously, and how living in New York City affected him and his work.[14:36] Ty shares his experience of growing up in the city and now raising children there. He and Mako talk about their 9/11 teahouse collaborative art project.[21:04] Mako's work explores themes of trauma, brokenness, and life and death.[23:35] Art as therapy and communication[30:00] There is no need to push yourself to create during trauma. Sometimes it's okay to do nothing. But you can wait and hope for transcendence and rebirth.[33:50] Creativity is not trivial just because it doesn't always translate into business. Your creativity is something that people need.[40:23] How does creativity fit into the model of capitalism? Mako talks about the ‘gift economy'.[44:03] Creating a transaction around a work of art shows the value of that work. Decentralizing art only hurts the middle man, not the artist or the consumer.[47:00] Ty explains why he created Cantilever, and how it functions as an operating system for running a creative business.[52:20] Technology as an artistic medium[56:33] Ty and Mako discuss what they have learned from each other, and how the so-called ‘unproductive' moments in life are what contribute to creativity.[1:03:45] The assumption of scarcity vs. the assumption of abundance.
Damian has more than 25 years' experience as a consulting structural engineer in Australia, US, Canada and Asia. After graduating with first class honours from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Damian undertook post-graduate studies at the University of Toronto and the University of Sydney specialising in sustainable engineering including Mass Timber and CLT. In 1997 Damian visited La Sagrada Familia. It changed his outlook. While sitting on the pew, looking up at the light dancing on the ceiling of the cathedral he made a decision to dedicate his career to Architecture through Structures. Damian started his career in Australia with Low and Hooke, before moving to Hyder and then to SDA Structures where he was a director. Damian founded Cantilever in 2010 with a focus on developing co-creation, integrated design and regenerative design within projects that require high levels of harmonisation between architecture and structural engineering. Cantilever specialises in Stage 0 of the design, which is the early feasibility stage of a project. In this episode, you'll discover: How to constantly be open to challenging your beliefs How project professionals can break out of their silos Why integrated design is the way of the future Why questioning hierarchy gets quashed How you're actually meant to learn Developing your creativity and intuitive thinking And more. Over recent years there have been a number of incidents of structural failures of sign and high mast lighting structures across Australia and New Zealand, primarily due to poor design and construction practices. In addition to the obvious unacceptable safety risks and property damage caused by such incidents, these failures create substantial unforeseen operational costs to repair and modify these assets. This often results in significant traffic delays and imparts reputational damage to the governing road authority and other parties involved. The Austroads report Design and Construction Guidelines for the Delivery of Large Cantilever and Gantry Structures documents consistent advice for the design and construction of large cantilever and gantry structures that is aligned with national and international best practice. This webinar, presented by Claire Jager, Linda Ziebell and Andrew Wong, covers the following key topics: gaps in current guidance and standards examples of good practice lessons learned from past failures. The guidance document should be read alongside relevant standards and is intended for use by all stakeholders including: state road agencies local government agencies designers, contractors and fabricators.
Hello and welcome back to the UserFlows Podcast. UserFlows is a show where we talk about UX Design and UX Careers. You should listen to this show if... You are a student of user experience or product design. You are a professional who is considering a transition to the field or if you're just someone who's interested in UX design and wants to learn a bit more about it. In each episode, I'll interview a successful, working designer in order to discover how they found the field and have managed to thrive in this highly competitive landscape. We'll break down the steps they took in order to land their first jobs, dive into the mistakes they've made while building their careers, and hopefully teach a bit about the processes, tools, and best practices that have helped them in their own design journey. If you haven't already, please subscribe to the show on iTunes, Spotify or anywhere else you listen to podcasts. I'll be releasing a show about every other week or so. If you'd like to be a friend to the show. Leaving a review and comment on iTunes would be very much appreciated. Share a link to this show with your friends and those interested in UX design. Feel free to recommend topics you'd like to hear discussed and if you have any questions about Design, Design Careers, or anything else for that matter, you can DM me on Instagram @userflows.live.Today I'm speaking with Ty Fujimura, CEO of Cantilever Web Design and Development. Ty is an extremely thoughtful designer and design leader. His career purpose (I mean, look at that, he actually has a career purpose) is to unite creativity and business. Cantilever is a mission-driven company and its mission is to harness the power of “Digital Hospitality". A term I absolutely love, it means they believe websites are spaces that users inhabit, not billboards they see from a distance. Ty is currently focused on building a great environment for Cantilever's staff to thrive and deliver outstanding results for their clients. In our conversation, we dive a little bit deeper into what Digital Hospitality means to Ty, his team, and their clients. Cantilever is a remote-first team so we talk a bit about remote working best practices for the rest of us just toying at remote working. How to make time to let designers design and some of his thoughts around building a successful design culture.I can not thank Ty enough for sharing his time and ideas. If you'd like to learn more about Ty and Cantilever. You can connect with Ty on Twitter @tyfuji or by visiting cantilever.co. If you're a soccer fan, Ty also hosts a fantastic podcast We The Peeps focused on US Soccer, USMNT the World Cup and is an irreverent take on US Soccer. USMNT Gold Cup, CONCACAF Nations League, and World Cup Qualifying. Give it a listen.TM

Get ready for the best summary of bridges you ever heard, including diving deep in to this mystical design of bridgework called 'fixed-movable' bridge. You cannot search about Bridge Design on Google without landing on the great content that Prof Paul Tipton has released. https://youtu.be/h9mmRiFtHmU Protrusive Dental Pearl: where to place your grooves for crowns and bridges?Crowns: place grooves mesial or distal, or mesial AND distal. Ideally in tooth and not in core material (we elaborate in the episode). Why mesial and distal for crowns and bridges? The forces will be transmitted bucco-lingually on a crown - therefore grooves perpendicular to this force vector to resist it would be mesial/distal. How about for bridges then? For conventional bridges the grooves are placed buccal or lingual, or buccal AND lingual. This is because the forces are now acting antero-posteriorly on the bridge via forces on the pontic(s). The buccal/lingual grooves will resist antero-posterior forces. Prof Tipton and I discuss: The benefits of fixed-movable bridges (such as negating the need for parallel preps of abutments)The contraindications of Fixed-Moveable bridges (such mobility of abutments)Why fixed-moveable bridges should be the default designMyth-busting Ante's lawWhat is the maximum span of fixed-moveable bridgework? What are the rules that govern cantilever bridges?what about mesial cantilever vs distal cantilever? Why is Distal cantilever worse, and is there any evidence to back this up?The steps in planning for Bridges: 1. Design anterior bridgework first 2. Choose your abutment teeth 3. What Design? (F-F, F-M, Cantilever?) and 4. Type of retainers for the abutments (Adhesive retainer, conventional crown, onlay etc)We discuss an actual case and live planning for a Fixed-Movable bridgeWhere is the fixed-movable attachment housed? Anterior or posterior? Inside the abutment or outside of it?The one thing you must do when placing Fixed-moveable bridges or you would have wasted the time and effort:Remove a small portion of the male component - about 0.25mm on average If you enjoyed this episode, you will like the complete denture tips given by Dr Mark Bishop - check it out!
