In 2014, Major League Baseball's Official Historian John Thorn and veteran baseball journalist Alan Schwarz published an authoritative and thought-provoking list of "Baseball's 100 Most Important People" - including more than its fair share of surprisingly influential figures. Nestled between National Baseball Hall of Famers "Hammerin'" Hank Greenberg and "King" Kelly at number 79 on that list is this week's guest: "More than anyone, Miles Wolff is responsible for the modern renaissance of minor-league baseball, as it emerged from the lean years of the 1960s and '70s to the boom of the 1980s and '90s. Wolff bought the Carolina League's Durham Bulls for just $2,666 in 1979, nurtured it into a local success, and owned the franchise as it became a national symbol of the minor leagues after the release of the film "Bull Durham" in 1988. He sold the team in 1990 for $4 million just as the minors began to flourish again. "A baseball purist at heart, Wolff grew frustrated at the money- and marketing-driven approach exhibited by the regular minor leagues, whose clubs were beholden to the major-league organizations to which they fed players. (Communities rarely got to know the best players, because they were promoted to the next level within three or sixth months.) So in 1993, Wolff re-established the Northern League, a circuit in the upper Midwest made up of teams that operated outside the sphere of Organized Baseball. The Northern League's six clubs signed players — often minor-league veterans on their way down or overlooked collegians — to stock their rosters. The Northern League was an instant success and spawned imitators across the country. "Wolff's first baseball job came in 1971 as the general manager of the Double-A Savannah (Georgia) Braves, and he subsequently was a GM in Anderson, South Carolina., and Jacksonville, Florida. "Wolff also owned Baseball America, the Durham-based magazine of the minor leagues, for most of its lifetime. He bought the magazine from founder Allan Simpson in 1982 and served as president and publisher until selling the company in 2000." + + + PRE-ORDER Miles Wolff's soon-to-be-released memoir "There's a Bulldozer on Home Plate: A 50-Year Journey in Minor League Baseball" AND/OR the upcoming final (4th) edition of the indispensable "Encyclopedia of Minor League Baseball: A Complete Record of Teams, Leagues and Seasons, 1876-2019" NOW!

Was Bob Feller the greatest Cleveland Indian? You can make an argument in his favor. Dec. 15, 2020 will mark 10 years since the passing of the Hall of Fame pitcher. I had planned to release the interview I recorded with Feller in 1983 around this date, not knowing the story would break that Cleveland will be changing its team name. As for Feller, when I taped the interview with him he was touring the country, putting on pitching exhibitions, before minor league baseball games. I was in Kinston, NC, broadcasting for the Toronto Blue Jays A ball club in the Carolina League, when Feller passed through. He gave me a marvelous interview and even sat in the booth with me, during the game, to provide commentary. I do not pretend to know what Feller might have said about Cleveland changing its nickname, but I do know a lot of what he said about pitching in the interview could easily apply to today. In the interview, we talk about his pitching philosophy, how he pitched to Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio and much more.

Episode 63: Podcast creator Jason Becker will change your mind about umpires

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 25, 2020 55:53

Let’s meet the baseball nut who sticks up for the guys behind the plate that every baseball fan loves to hate.  Yes, we’re talking about umpires.  In this episode of the Check It Out! podcast, host Ken Harvey talks to his friend Jason Becker, creator of the Umpire Inspire podcast.  “In my book, he’s a genius, and he’s producing a fascinating podcast for the officials behind America’s favorite round-ball sport. That’s baseball, and those are umpires,” Harvey said in introducing Becker. “Fans and players often disagree with what the umpire says and what the umpire does, which can make it a lonely job even when there are two of them on the field.”  Becker humanizes umpires. He explains why they love what they do, even when they don’t get paid to call balls and strikes and outs. They’re inspired to do it for the love of the game.   Becker’s podcast invites listeners to come in and hear a captivating conversation with an enthusiastic umpire who may be from anywhere on the planet.  “Baseball isn’t just American, it’s global, and these umpires consider their jobs to be a lot more than just calling balls and strikes,” Harvey said.  Becker said baseball has been his passion “for practically my entire life.” He started playing when he was 5 and continues to play today in a senior adult league.  “I've played since I was a kid, like a lot of people. Coached my boy all the way through Little League, and my girls for a couple years while they were playing,” he said.  About eight years ago, he grabbed a mask and tried umpiring.  “It was a need that I felt I could do some good with in our local Little League here in Mukilteo, and it turned out to be a really great fit,” Becker said. “Being out on a baseball field makes more sense to me than being just about anywhere else, so I've really enjoyed umpiring.”  He takes it seriously. He umpires Little League baseball and softball around Washington and umpires high school baseball in Snohomish County.   It took Becker a couple of years of umpiring before he could see the connection between his love for umpiring and his love for fascinating podcasts.  “There’s a lot of folks out there for whom umpiring means an awful lot, and they put a lot of their heart and their time into it, and it’s often not paid. Little League is an all-volunteer organization, for instance,” Becker said. “I found that umpires were generally just a really great group of people to hang around with because of their giving spirit, their commitment to public service... how umpiring is a public service for many of the friends that I have in the umpiring community.”  That’s when the “two worlds” came together in Becker’s mind, and the idea of the Umpire Inspire podcast was born.  In late 2019, he decided it was time to make it happen.  “Now’s the time,” Becker said. “We’re going to take a swing. Hopefully, I’ll connect. Maybe I’ll miss, but it’s going to be an interesting journey, and it has definitely been such a joy and such a privilege, as I have completed this first go-around, and I’m just on the doorstep of getting my own season two underway, so it’s been great.”  The first episode of Umpire Inspire debuted on March 17, 2020, with minor league umpire Bobby Tassone, who works the Carolina League. Interviews with seven more umpires followed.  Season 2 started on Aug. 11. Among Becker’s interviews so far are umpires who work in Venezuela and the Czech Republic, and two women who call the game.  Some are professionals. Some are amateurs. They come in all shapes and sizes and range in age from 16 to 76. All have interesting stories to share.  “You’ve had an opportunity to have some conversations with some remarkable guests already,” Harvey said.   Harvey asked Becker when he, as a young player, first became aware of an umpire on the field.  “I don’t think anybody has asked me that question before,” Becker said. “I’m not sure I do remember, if I’m being honest. As a kid, you’re out there, you’re doing what you do with your buddies, and you’re playing the game and you’re having fun. I can’t recall a time where I do remember the umpire, but it does put a point on what the best volunteer umpires, or paid umpires... one of their best characteristics is they’re doing it for the game.”  Umpires don’t care who wins or loses the game, Becker explained.   “We are what we call the third team on the field,” he said. “In every baseball and softball game, there are three teams: there’s the home team, there’s the away team, and there’s the third team, the umpires, who, just like the players, are out there giving their best effort and trying to make every call correct. They want to do their best job, just like the players do. And maybe it makes a point that I don’t remember my umpires when I was a kid, but it doesn’t change the fact that they were out there giving their time away from their families, away from their work lives, so that I could play ball. Without an umpire, it’s just a scrimmage.”  Harvey recalled his time playing baseball as a youngster and coming to terms with the stranger behind the plate.  “I think that probably any of us who have stood on the field and gone to the home plate and swung, at some point in our lifetime, whatever age, we start to recognize that an umpire has a significant amount of power, but also a significant amount of knowledge about the game, and maybe even more than my coach does,” Harvey said.   He said he appreciated Becker’s ability to bring out the humanity and service that umpires bring to the sport and wanted to know, “At what point did you start to really recognize that about these umpires?”  It took Becker a while behind the plate to see the other stories in his umpire colleagues.  “My show is not about rules or field mechanics or instruction,” he said. “There are a thousand great websites and podcasts and sources that do a much better job with things like that than I do. My show is about the stories and the journeys and the heart of why we umpires do what we do. There is nothing an umpire loves more than to just get together with his or her partner after a game, share their experiences and their wins and their losses, and what they’ve learned; swap stories; tell tall tales; that is something that is common with every umpire at every level, all around the world.”  Harvey asked for an example.   “One of my favorite guests during this season one was Dale Scott,” Becker said. “He was a Major League umpire for 30-plus years until his retirement in 2017. There was so much good stuff there. He did point out ... if you went to your job every day not having any idea of what was going to happen that day, it might make you get up out of bed in the morning a little differently. It could light a little bit of a fire. That’s what it’s like every game for a baseball or a softball umpire. Some things are going to be consistent, but just about every game you see something and have to rule on something that you may never have seen before.”  That got Becker to tell the story of his own personal umpire hero.  “One thing that’s really interesting, Ken, is that a lot of the stories start exactly the same,” Becker said. “I’ve had the opportunity to speak with everyone from teenage youth umpires here in Snohomish County, all the way up to Major League Baseball umpires, and oftentimes, they have very similar stories. In fact, I was just re-listening the other day to one of my episodes, a conversation I had with a Major League umpire ... really, an umpire hero of mine named Tripp Gibson, who is one of many Major League umpires that live here in the Puget Sound area.   “He was telling us about his first game. Coach gets a little fired up, and in his very first game ever as an umpire, he has to toss the coach. The way Tripp described it, he says, ‘Yeah, so the gentleman, Pat, who brought me out, he met me after the game and gave me my check for 25 bucks and said, “Well, good try, kid.” Tripp said, ‘Good try? That was awesome! I’m coming back tomorrow!’”   While most players get to take a field break every half inning and between plate appearances, umpires never leave the field.  “I would love for listeners of this show to maybe start thinking about umpires in a little different way,” Becker said. “The home team and the away team, they get to go in the dugout and relax every half inning. But the umpires stay out there every pitch, every inning, every game, and for the Major League guys, six to eight months in a row.”  “That’s got to be really tough,” Harvey said. “Especially when the weather conditions aren’t prime for something like that.”  Despite the difficult working conditions and tension that comes from making calls, umpires just want to do their job right and enhance the game, Becker said.  “One thing that umpires like to hang their hat on is, if they can get through a game and nobody notices that they were even there, they had a pretty good game, right?” he said. “Because it’s not our job to get in the way. It’s not our game. We are there to serve. We’re there to go to work and enable and enhance that game that we’re working at, and if we get that done, it’s been a pretty good day at the office.”  Part 2: Self-Help Shelf   “This is Sarri Gilman with the Self-Help Shelf for Sno-Isle Libraries. The book I have for you today is ‘Eight Dates,’ by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman. Oh yes, they’re married, and they once ran the famous Love Lab where they researched couples and communication. Together, they now have the Gottman Institute in Seattle, where they share years of research on how to make marriage work and what predicts divorce.   “During COVID-19, not too many couples were having romantic dates, and your closeness and intimacy may feel like it was just lost in the pandemic, or maybe it was lost even before that. If you’re married or dating, ‘Eight Dates’ is for you. The book gives you a guide on things to think about before each date, and you literally make a plan to go on eight dates together, and each date, you’re given a different topic with a whole different set of questions to ask each other. You practice listening and learning about each other, and even if you’ve been together for decades, I think you’re going to get a lot out of this book, especially if you feel like your relationship needs attention and you wish you were closer.   “Since we're in a pandemic, you’re going to need to bring a little bit of creativity to your dates with your partner. Maybe it’s a beach picnic or a date at home; it really doesn't matter where you are, because each date is a full discussion on a topic picked by the Gottmans, with a guide to support you.   “I do recommend that you each read a copy of the book so that you have some of the background material to think about before your date, or you could even read out loud to each other to prepare for your date.   “One of my favorite lines from the book is this one: ‘The goal of conflict is not to win or convince the other person that you’re right. In creating compromise, we have to understand each other’s core needs on the issues we are discussing, as well as each other’s areas of flexibility. The goal is not to become identical; the goal is to understand each other.’  “This book is also going to help you get a better understanding of each other's core needs. By going on the eight dates, you will have a much deeper understanding of each other, and you’re going to get tips that you can practice for each date, and my hope is that you just continue going on these deeper dive discussion dates in the future.   “’Eight Dates,’ by Doctors John and Julie Gottman, is available digitally from the Sno-Isle Libraries. Take good care of you, and remember, some books are almost as good as therapy.”

Major League baseball players are blaming the lack of video for their hitting woes. J.D. Martinez is among those complaining that players' access to in-game video has been limited because of Covid-19 and recent cheating scandals. How did the players of yesteryear manage without videos? When Pat Crawford died  at a nursing home in Morehead City, N.C. 26 years ago, he was the last surviving member of baseball's famous Gashouse Gang, the 1934 St. Louis Cardinals team which one the World Series over the Detroit Tigers in seven games.  He died three days shy of his 92nd birthday on Jan. 25, 1994. Eleven years before his death, Crawford was living in Kinston, NC, where I was broadcasting the Carolina League games of the Toronto Blue Jays affiliate.  Through the club's owner, Ray Kuhlman, I met up with Crawford in his home.  He graciously gave me a interview, reminiscing about his baseball playing days, including the Cardinals, for whom he played in 1933 and 1934.  Crawford got into two games in that infamous 1934 World Series. The series became renown because it was played closely until the final game, when the Cards annihilated the Tigers, 11-0 in Detroit.  However, the game made headlines because of a hard slide into third  base in the top of the sixth inning by the Cardinals' Joe Medwick. That led to a brief fight between Medwick and Detroit third baseman Marv Owen.  However, when Medwick took his position in left field in the last of the sixth, frustrated Detroit fans pelted him with fruit, vegetables, bottles and cushions.  Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis, in attendance, ordered Medwick removed from the game.  It became the only time in the history of the major leagues that a commissioner ejected a player from a game. Crawford played 318 games in the big leagues with the New York Giants, Cincinnati Reds and Cardinals.  He had a lifetime .280 average and played first base, second base and third base.  He also played collegiate baseball with Springfield College in Springfield, MA, Ohio State and Davidson College. I hope you enjoy the interview, as Pat Crawford, whose real name was Clifford Rankin Crawford, takes us back to a different era of Major League Baseball.

With less than two weeks to go before the presumptive start of the truncated 2020 Major League baseball season, the Houston Astros have cancelled their summer camp session because of Covid-19. It is the second time the Astros have cancelled a session. What are the implications? I talk about this in my latest podcast. Once again, I dip into my archives and pull out an interview I did with Mike Greenwell from 36 years ago. Greenwell played his entire 12-year career with the Boston Red Sox. When you examine his career statistics, you note they were more than just respectable, they were downright very good. I talk about that, in addition to replaying the interview, which occurred on May 16, 1984, when I was broadcasting games for the Kinston Blue Jays of the Carolina League.

He posted good numbers in the minor leagues and after a couple years made his major league debut on August 6, 1990. His career highlights include a 2.55 ERA in 1990 and a 2.98 ERA in 1991. Tomlin played his final Major League game on May 20, 1994. He went 30-31 in 94 career starts with 297 career strikeouts. After retiring from Major League Baseball, Tomlin was the pitching coach at Liberty University from 1997-2006.[1] He then went on to become the pitching coach for the Washington Nationals affiliate Potomac Nationals of the single-A Carolina League from 2007-2008 and the pitching coach of Nationals double-A affiliate Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League from 2009-2011. He currently lives in Lynchburg, Virginia, and is the head coach at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Virginia. In this episode I speak with my old college coach about how he overcame his limitations by developing his knowledge of baseball and how he built his capacity to compete at the highest level by challenging himself to compete in life on a daily basis. This approach to life and baseball prepared him to capitalize on the opportunities of a lifetime. This conversation was an absolute honor to be a part of. Luke Appling Enough of the Houston Astros already.  Also, in this podcast, I replay an interview I did with one of baseball's all-time great hitters, Luke Appling.  However, before replaying the interview, I go on a rant about the over-the-top coverage the Houston Astros are receiving in the early stages of spring training.  It seems the media is determined to ask every player what they think about the cheating scandal.  But I say enough! The Astros are not going to crawl on their hands and knees, begging for forgiveness.  The Astros are not going to give back their 2017 World Series trophy.  And the same players critical of the Astros, are the same players represented by the players association, who also represent the Astros' players and cut a deal with the commissioner's office for immunity in return for being interviewed about the scandal.  Besides, I want to read about the rookie phenom, the pitcher making a recovery, the hitter who has discovered a new way of hitting.  I've read and heard enough about the scandal. And speaking of hitting, I look back at an interview I recorded nearly 37 years ago with Luke Appling.  He was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history and for 20 seasons played with just one club, the Chicago White Sox.  In this interview, which starts at the 9:15 mark of the podcast, we look back at Appling's career.  We talked about the money the players were making in the early 1980's compared to his era - the most Appling ever earned was $18,500 in 1937, the year after he won the American League batting title with a .388 average. Appling also was the last manager of the Kansas City Athletics, managing the club for their final 40 games in that city.  He discussed how owner Charlie Finley hired him.  He also recalled the home run he hit in the 1982 Crackerjack All-Star game of old timers at RFK Stadium. At the time I interviewed Appling, he was a roving, minor league hitting instructor for the Atlanta Braves and I was broadcasting for the Kinston Blue Jays.  We recorded the interview at Durham Athletic Park, home of the Durham Bulls, at the time, Atlanta's class A club in the Carolina League.  It was also the location for the movie Bull Durham. As the Carolina League All-Star break rolled around on the 2019 season, things were going great for Cole Uvila. His Down East Wood Ducks had dominated the Carolina League, winning 50 of their 70 games to take the first-half crown and clinch a playoff berth in the process. Cole had finished strong as well. He had worked on the issues that had been bothering him -- his command, his pitch selection -- and had some good momentum heading into mid-June. In his last seven appearances before the break, he’d allowed just one earned run across 10 innings, striking out 12. But now, as he headed home to Seattle for a brief break, it wasn’t going to be a vacation. He was returning to Driveline Baseball to get back on their mound and fine tune some things. Of all the different factors that had played a role in Cole reaching this point in his career, perhaps nothing – aside from his own determination – had had a bigger impact than Driveline had. “I guess Driveline has a lot of missions," Cole says, "but specifically what started Driveline was the idea that baseball players can be trained and created, not just, that they're born with 100-mph arm.” So Cole returned to Driveline with a very specific mission: He wanted to turn his curveball from merely a complement to his fastball into a dangerous weapon. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/razedsports/message

As we left episode 3, Cole Uvila was unhappy with himself. After his promotion to Advanced-A, with the Down East Wood Ducks of the Carolina League, he had started well. But through the bulk of May he had some struggles. After giving up just the second homer of his professional career early in the month, he went through a stretch of five straight appearances in which he allowed at least one run. But when he took a moment to examine his season, and his pro career as a whole, he realized that things weren't quite as devastating as he'd thought. “And I looked and I was like sheesh, all in all if you had told me in a year after I got drafted I'd be in High-A with and done what I've done, I kind of like, 'this isn't as bad as it feels,'" Cole says. "And I was just like, if this month, which had felt like it was the worst I'd pitched ever, has resulted in this, then like I said it's not that bad. It's not career-ending.” Meanwhile, back in Washington, Cole’s father Steve had been deep in a transition of his own – he was getting back into the hobby he loved – drag racing. He had given up his sporting passion in order to help Cole shoot for his dream, but now he had time for racing again. He had bought one of his old cars back from a buddy who’d held onto it for 27 years – yes, the car pre-dated Cole. Steve started tuning it up, taking it to the track again. “It's a white 1967 Camaro called Thumper. And it's got 'Thumper' down the side of it and a big rabbit painted on it." Steve says. "It's kinda old school cool and a lot of the kids love it. It's known around and whatnot. It's been a race car since 1971, so it's got history.” The car has history, just as racing is a part of Steve’s history, and in a way, Cole’s, too. And that history is complex and runs deep. It involves a decision Steve made years ago. A decision that changed everything, though, as we’ll find out, not forever. Sometimes, things can come full circle. That’s what happened on June 2, 2019. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/razedsports/message

Leonard was a Negro League star on the Homestead Grays from 1934 to 1950. He was also a teammate of the great Josh Gibson. Both he and Gibson would be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. In 1999, The Sporting News ranked him number 47 among the 100 greatest players to play baseball. Leonard was 75, when I interviewed him. We talked about his career, Jackie Robinson and so much more. Leonard died at the age of 90 on Nov. 27, 1997.
