When Luis Urías hit a grand slam on Saturday at Yankee Stadium, it was the first time that a Red Sox number nine hitter collected a salami in the Bronx, and only the second time ever for the man at the bottom of the Boston order to go deep against the Yanks with the bases loaded. Luis Rivera had done it at Fenway Park on August 31, 1990, and that was it.Overall, the Yankees still have a 4-2 lead in ninth-hitter grand slams against their rivals, three by pitchers: Red Ruffing in 1933, Don Larsen in 1956 (months before his World Series perfect game, what a year), and Mel Stottlemyre (inside the park) in 1965, all at Yankee Stadium. Fred Stanley took Mike Torrez out of Fenway on June 20, 1978 – sort of the opposite of Larsen, as Torrez would go on to give up Bucky Dent's division-deciding blast over the Green Monster. The Yankees last had their No. 9 batter hit a grand slam in 2021, Gary Sánchez off Baltimore's Keegan Akin. The Red Sox's last No. 9 slam before Urías was… also Urías. Last Thursday. Two days earlier. So, in a span of three days, Urías went from having hit 46 home runs as a major leaguer without a grand slam to 48 homers with two grand slams, both out of the No. 9 hole. Only three players have done that more in an entire career: Rich Reese (for the Twins in 1969, 1970, and 1972), Dick Schofield (for the 1985 and 1986 Angels, and 1994 Blue Jays), and Yuniesky Betancourt (for the 2007 Mariners, then two for the 2010 Royals).Betancourt's pair in 2010 came on July 17 and August 21, but there are 29 players now, including Urías, with two career grand slams out of the No. 9 hole, and 34 days was not the record for temporal proximity there. The record for games between grand slams by a number nine hitter is 0, set by Tony Cloninger when the Atlanta pitcher gave himself all the run support he would need on a first-inning slam off Bob Priddy, grounded out against Priddy in the third, then hit another granny off Ray Sadecki in the fourth. Cloninger gave up a solo shot to Sadecki in the fifth, but got himself a ninth RBI in the eighth, driving in more than half the runs on his way to a 17-3 complete game win. There have been a few other No. 9 hitters with two slams in a season. Brandon Inge had a week for the 2004 Tigers, hitting a grand slam off Cleveland's Jason Anderson on April 23 and Anaheim's Scot Shields on the 27th, the closest anyone got to Cloninger until Urías.In 1996, Kevin Elster hit grand slams out of the nine-hole for the Rangers on April 19 and August 5. Like Don Larsen, Madison Bumgarner had a more memorable moment in the 2014 World Series, but also hit grand slams on April 14 and July 13, both in San Francisco. The following year, Hank Conger hit grand slams for the Astros as the number nine hitter on August 1 and September 4.The players who did it in back-to-back seasons, in addition to Reese and Schofield?* Dizzy Trout (1949 and 1950 Tigers)* Tom Brookens (1987 and 1988 Tigers)* Milt Cuyler (1991 and 1992 Tigers)* Jose Valentin (1994 and 1995 Brewers)* Sean Berry (1995 Expos and 1996 Astros)* Mike Matheny (1996 and 1997 Brewers)* Darren Bragg (1996 and 1997 Red Sox)* Hunter Renfroe (2018 and 2019 Padres)* Raimel Tapia (2018 and 2019 Rockies)* Martín Maldonado (2021 and 2022 Astros)And the ones for whom the second grand slam was a repeat of more years gone by?* Rick Wise (1971 Phillies and 1973 Cardinals)* Casey Blake (2006 and 2008 Cleveland)* Jake Rogers (2021 and 2023 Tigers)* Omar Vizquel (1993 Mariners and 1996 Cleveland)* Byron Buxton (2016 and 2019 Twins)* Julio Lugo (2003 Devil Rays and 2007 Red Sox)* Camilo Pascual (1960 Senators and 1965 Twins)* Denny Neagle (1995 Pirates and 2001 Rockies)* Bob Gibson (1965 and 1973 Cardinals)* Kelly Johnson (2008 Atlanta and 2016 Mets)* Champ Summers (1975 Cubs and 1984 Padres)* Glenallen Hill (1989 Blue Jays and 1998 Cubs)And the record for the longest time between grand slams as a number nine hitter? Jim Sundberg, at Fenway Park for the Rangers off Rick Wise (who should've known to be careful with No. 9 hitters, shouldn't he?) on June 9, 1975, and then 12 years later as a Cubs pinch-hitter, blasting a game-tying slam off Lance McCullers (Sr.) of the Padres, followed by four more Chicago runs for a wild 12-8 triumph. First of all, the air conditioner commercial:And now, the Starling Marte home run chain as he and the Mets both embark on what hopefully will be a happier second half of the season…* Starling Marte hit his first home run off Dallas Keuchel, 7/26/12* Dallas Keuchel gave up his first home run to Asdrúbal Cabrera, 6/23/12* Asdrúbal Cabrera hit his first home run off Jason Hammel, 8/18/07Hammel connects us Brandon Nimmo's home run chain, as that's who gave up the Mets leadoff man's first home run, in 2016. Hammel was with the Devil Rays, in their final season as such, and Cabrera was a Cleveland rookie.Cabrera moved on to Washington in 2014, then the Rays in 2015, before joining the Mets ahead of the 2016 season. Hammel, meanwhile, pitched one season for the (non-Devil) Rays before a couple of decent years in Colorado, Baltimore for 2012-13, and then the Cubs as a free agent in 2014. Traded to Oakland later that year in the Jeff Samardzija deal, Hammel returned to Chicago the following winter when he returned to free agency… and that brought him, as the owner of a World Series ring, to Flushing with the Cubs on July 1, 2016.Jacob deGrom retired six of the first seven Cubs hitters that Friday night, and after Hammel set down the side in order in the bottom of the first, the Mets gave their ace a lead on back-to-back homers by James Loney and Cabrera. Loney's two-run double the following inning made it a 4-0 game before Kris Bryant got the Cubs' first hit, a homer off deGrom in the fourth.Nimmo busted that game open with his first dinger, a three-run shot, in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cubs stuck with Hammel to give up two more bombs — a leadoff dinger to Yoenis Céspedes in the fifth, and then Cabrera's second of the game, a two-run blast. That was the last time that Cabrera got to face Hammel, against whom he had not homered since his first at-bat against him in 2007, having gone 1-for-6 with a double in the years between. It was also Nimmo's only time facing Hammel. But Loney? Loney owned that dude — 16-for-44, four homers, 12 RBI, and a 1.083 OPS with only two strikeouts. Nobody had more hits against Hammel than Loney, and only Edwin Encarnación hit more homers, with five in 40 plate appearances.Editor's note: We Can Pod It Out will be off next week, but home run chains will continue along with other Willets Pen content. Hannah and Zach are back with their first episode since the start of the baseball season, leading to a fun conversation at the beginning of the episode about what each of them did for MLB Opening Day this year.About a week into the season, they agree that the new rules have been a success in terms of speeding up the game and creating more small-ball. Specifically, teams are attempting steals at rates we haven't seen in over a decade and succeeding at rates we haven't seen since even longer ago. That's good! Right?Zach comes up with a fun game before he and Hannah discuss Anthony Rendon confronting a fan in Oakland and getting suspended as a result. Before bandwagoning the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays, Hannah and Zach dive into the story of MLB pitchers being told to throw the first pitch of each at-bat right down the middle of the strike zone, explaining why it is probably a good idea and if we can expect more widespread adoption from the rest of the league.00:30 what did you do for opening day?04:20 A lot of stolen bases!12:20 Zach's Game: Did this happen in an Orioles/Rangers game?19:50 Do We Care? EPISODE 51: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Putin is doubling down and we must act. We must avoid war, so we must DO everything else. We must at least explore dissolving the United Nations and re-forming it without Russia (3:05) More practically, Biden must reverse his September decision and declare Russia a State Sponsor of Terrorism - it's what the oligarchs fear most (4:27) And the need to do SOMETHING is not just about Russia. It's about Russia's propagandists here - paid or not - like Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson, CPAC, and Michael Flynn. We have to make it career-ending to supply the Kremlin with anti-Ukraine sound bites. B-Block (15:09) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Al, in Miami (16:25) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: The lone Ohio Senate Debate is a TKO for Tim Ryan over J.D. Vance, or, if you prefer, "Hillbilly Eulogy"; Maggie Haberman battered by BBC; LA Council resignations not enough. (20:15) IN SPORTS: Baseball lifer gets the big gig in Philly; the five-year plan in Carolina turns into a five-week plan; Tommy Tuberville blowback hits sports (22:23) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Candace Owens, Owen Shroyer, and Jason Whitlock defend Kanye West and antisemitism, and compete with Lauren Boebert and the Secretary of the Army for the crown. C-Block (27:08) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Five different baseball franchises have tried to get me fired - at ESPN, at KTLA, at Fox Sports. Only one has kinda sorta succeeded. The remarkable story from ten years ago: when MLB Network offered me a show, and then reneged when threatened by the Yankees.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Who's Got Next with WISH-TV's Charlie Clifford

On this episode, WISH-TV's Charlie Clifford connects with a 68-year-old guy, who for the first time since 1975, spent a summer back home near Hazleton, PA. His name is Joe Maddon, Major League Baseball's mad scientist manager who over the past 15 plus-years used unconventional tactics on the and field and off to ignite two of the game's most hapless franchises. You may have heard what happened in Chicago in 2016? We'll get into that in a moment. First, 2007 in Tampa Bay, after 27 years as a pro baseball coach, Maddon finally received his first shot at managing in the big leagues. 27 years. The catch? The Devil Rays were the 'Bad News Bears.' The franchise, existing at the time for just 9 seasons, had finished above last place in the American League East Division just once. Plus, they were coming off the worst season in club history. 61 wins. 101 losses. More people were going to minor league games across America than showing up to watch these guys. Welcome to Tampa, first time skipper Joe Maddon. Immediately things got weird, but in the best way. On the cutting edge of the analytics tidal wave about to sweep over the game, Maddon routine played a new lineup nearly every night. His team dress code? “If you look hot, wear it.” The clubhouse, turned into a madhouse. Maddon's philosophy, "The crazier the better." Perhaps the best story of Maddon's stress-free approach came a few seasons later. Tampa, off to an 0-6 to start the season, was flying to its third series of the year and here comes shots of booze for the entire plane. Maddon from the cockpit ordered over the loudspeaker a toast to the "Best 0-6 team in the history of baseball." That's Joe. As one former player put it, he is "The all-time ambassador of fun." In Maddon's second season in Tampa the team broke the major league record for biggest improvement by a team who finished with the league's worst record just one season previous. And that wasn't the best part. The Tampa Bay Rays were in the World Series after beating the reigning champion Boston Red Sox in 7 games to win the American League. Maddon's Rays, with a total payroll less than one quarter of what the Yankees spent that season were playing in the World Series. This is when Joe Maddon was no longer the small-town star quarterback from a struggling coal mining Pennsylvania town, no longer the unheard-of catching prospect at Lafayette college, no longer the failed minor league player, no longer the corky coach in the Angels system who couldn't catch his big break. Instead Joe Maddon, undeniably, was the best manager in baseball. Why didn't give up long before this? How did he acquire a PHD in people skills without a college degree? How did he help break the most infamous professional sports curse on Earth? These are some of the questions I asked Joe in this conversation. He joins us on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in Sugar Loaf, PA, not far from the friendly diner his 90-year-old mom Beanie worked at until just recently. His late dad Joe, a local plumber, surely serviced countless homes around the neighborhood his oldest son spent this summer golfing and figuring out what's next after being let go as Los Angeles Angels manager mid-season. Oh yeah, and he wrote a book. It's Called The Book of Joe. You can pre-order it now wherever you get your books. It's really good. With the help of the best baseball writer in the game, Tom Verducci, Maddon shares his life story, advice on leadership, coaching, and his favorite tales that came with being one of the more unique people to ever put on a baseball uniform. Think of this interview, coming your way right now with Joe Maddon, as the first pitch. There is so much more in that book. As we always say, there are stories to tell. And my only question for you, is Who's Got Next?! Thanks for stopping by! Mark Hendrickson is a former professional basketball AND baseball player. Despite many opportunities to turn pro early - he got drafted six different times by the MLB - he chose to complete his degree at Washington State University. At Washington State, Hendrickson was selected to the All-Conference teams for his performance on the court and on the diamond. Hendrickson was drafted by the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers in 1996 and spent time on the Sacramento Kings, New Jersey Nets, and Cleveland Cavaliers before ultimately retiring from basketball and shifting his full focus to professional baseball. Although he still competed in the minor leagues during the summers of his basketball career, Hendrickson's first appearance in the majors was with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2002 as a relief pitcher. Before his retirement from baseball, Hendrickson pitched for the Blue Jays, Devil Rays, Dodgers, Marlins, and Orioles. When asked about his best quality as a leader on and off the court or field, Hendrickson said that he had an ability to stay calm despite the highs and lows of competing in professional sports ("The Next Pitch" mentality). Hendrickson's mentors and inspirations throughout his career include Buck Showalter, Kevin Eastman, and Roy Halladay. Today, Mark Hendrickson resides in Pennsylvania with his wife and children and is on a mission to promote the younger generation's involvement in sports by sharing lessons he learned from his playing days - all the way from his childhood to his remarkable two-sport career in the NBA and the MLB.

Slide into our 3x All-Star, former Reliever of the Year and baseball dad, coach Heath Bell Heath Bell grew up in Southern California. He attended Tustin High School, it was there that he developed habits that would last a lifetime. Undrafted out of high school, Bell attended nearby Santa Ana College (known briefly as Rancho Santiago College during his time there. Bell went 8-0 with a 2.17 ERA and nine saves for the Dons as a freshman en route to being named the Orange Empire Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year in 1997.7 He added 12 saves as a sophomore. Although those two seasons would eventually lead to his 2010 induction into the Santa Ana College Hall of Fame, his junior-college success guaranteed nothing in terms of a professional career. Again defying his doubters, Bell was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 69th round of the 1997 draft. The 1,583rd of 1,607 players taken that year, he did not sign, later recalling that when the Devil Rays made an offer, “I actually forgot I got drafted.” Instead he signed with the New York Mets as a free agent the following summer, starting his career at Kingsport of the Appalachian League, where he posted a 2.54 ERA and led his team with eight saves. Meanwhile, Bell’s life changed in other ways. He married his wife, Nicole, and adopted her young daughter, Jasmyne. Heath and Nicole had three children of their own: Jordyn, born with Down syndrome (“our blessing in disguise”10), Reece, and Rhett. Back on the field, Bell responded with a stellar return to Binghamton, notching a 1.18 ERA and six saves before a midseason promotion to Triple-A Norfolk. He enjoyed less success at the higher level and again posted pedestrian numbers in a 2003 encore but now found himself just one step away from the big leagues. From 2004 to 2006, Bell rode the proverbial shuttle between New York and Norfolk, often needed for stretches but never quite able to stick. And while his Triple-A performances dazzled, his stints with the Mets — with irregular roles and usage — didn’t go so well. In 81 appearances with the Mets, he posted a 4.92 ERA and zero saves. By the end of his tenure in New York he was already 28 years old, an age when most players have either established themselves or started preparing for their next career. As Bell later noted, even his family was ready for him to move on. Bell received a new lease on life when the Mets traded him and fellow reliever Royce Ring to the San Diego Padres for reliever Jon Adkins and outfielder Ben Johnson. Returning to the West Coast, Bell immediately thrived as Trevor Hoffman’s set-up man in 2007, posting a 2.02 ERA in 81 appearances and fanning 102 batters.Bell also became a legend in the Padres clubhouse, known as much for his zany antics (he was fond of flying remote-control helicopters in the clubhouse) as for his prowess on the mound. Bell took over the closer role after Hall of Fame closer Trevor Hoffman left the club, leading the National League with 42 saves and being named to the All-Star team. Perhaps not coincidentally, he’d lost 30 pounds before the season. Bell cleared the 40-save mark again in 2010 and 2011, making the All-Star team each time. At the 2010 midsummer classic, in Anaheim, Bell brought his father — then fighting lung cancer — to sit with him during media appearances and share the experience. It was the least he could for someone who had always made time for him: “He says he’s a proud father. I’m a proud son.”15In his third and final All-Star Game appearance, Bell sprinted in from the bullpen as usual before sliding into the pitcher’s mound and retiring the only batter he faced. When asked about the slide, Bell said, “I wanted the fans to have fun with this. The fans are really what matters. They’re the ones that show up. They’re the ones who pay our salary." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/playballkid/message

Hinch potentially getting the Tigers' manager job is a huge deal towards the Sox landing Cora, what MLB team is the most cursed now that the Dodgers are off that list, where the hell that heckling Devil Rays fan is now and much more.
