QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“Americans have…a new rule written into their mental operating systems: Do your own thing, find your own reality, it's all relative. …Today, each of us is freer than ever to custom-make reality, to believe whatever and pretend to be whoever we wish. Which makes all the lines between actual and fictional blur and disappear more easily. Truth in general becomes flexible, personal, subjective. And we like this new ultra-freedom, insist on it, even as we fear and loathe the ways so many of our… fellow Americans use it.”~Kurt Andersen, author of Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire “…there is the view that God still speaks to us independent of the Bible. Drink this milk for a number of years and you will soon be attributing to God the inner voices coming from your fallen self.”~Conrad Mbewe, Zambian pastor “Truth is what your contemporaries let you get away with.”~Richard M. Rorty (1931-2007), postmodern philosopher “When people give up the search for truth, people turn to propaganda. And propaganda relies on emotional power.”~Jacques Ellul (1912-1994) French philosopher and sociologist “…we are not entitled to such license, I mean that of affirming what we please; we make the Holy Scriptures the rule and the measure of every tenet…”~Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335-c. 394), influential Christian leader, based in ancient Cappadocia “…we ought not to deliver even the most casual remark without the Holy Scriptures: nor be drawn aside by mere probabilities and the artifices of argument. Do not then believe me because I tell you these things, unless you receive from the Holy Scriptures the proof of what is set forth: for this salvation, which is of our faith, is not by ingenious reasonings, but by proof from the Holy Scriptures.”~Cyril of Alexandria, 5th century Christian bishop “[Christ] is everywhere, but he does not wish that you grope for him everywhere. Grope rather where the Word is, and there you will lay hold of him in the right way.”~Martin Luther (1483-1546), German reformerSERMON PASSAGESGenesis 1 (NASB95) 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.... Psalm 33 (NASB95)6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,And by the breath of His mouth all their host….9 For He spoke, and it was done;He commanded, and it stood fast. John 1 (NASB95) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it…. 14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 5 (NASB95) 39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life…. 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” Luke 24 (ESV)25 And [Jesus] said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself…. 44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Galatians 1 (NIV) 11 I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2 (NIV) 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. Hebrews 1 (NIV) 1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Dan, Pilgrim, Shawn, Micah, and Josh discuss "What is Christ-Centered Preaching?" Also, they play a game, "Is that in the Bible?"
About The Guest(s): Christopher Gordon is a pastor at the Escondido United Reform Church and has been in pastoral ministry for 20 years. He is the author of the New Reformation catechism on human sexuality and has a passion for teaching and preaching on biblical and theological subjects. Summary: In this episode of Renewal Cast, Colt Robinson and Jay Whip interview Christopher Gordon on the topic of Christ-centered preaching. They discuss the importance of preaching that focuses on the person and work of Jesus Christ and how it differs from moralistic preaching. They also explore the hermeneutical principles and theological categories that can help pastors preach Christ more effectively. The conversation emphasizes the need for pastors to understand the law-gospel distinction and to approach the text with a clear understanding of the author's intention. The tone and manner of preaching are also discussed, highlighting the importance of conveying the grace and compassion of Christ to the congregation. Key Takeaways:Christ-centered preaching aims to exposit the text and show the excellencies and beauties of Jesus Christ.Preaching should address the most pressing need of the congregation, which is the forgiveness of sins and the provision of a Savior. The law-gospel distinction is essential for understanding and preaching the Scriptures.Good expository preaching involves understanding the overarching point of the text and developing a sermon that supports and develops that point. The tone and manner of preaching should reflect the grace and compassion of Christ.Quotes:"The aim of preaching is to refresh people in the wonderful Gospel.""Christ-centered preaching can be properly done by dealing with the text on its own terms.""The ministry of the Spirit is a ministry of righteousness, rooted in the love and sacrifice of Christ.""In the Gospel, God is for us, not angrily yelling at us.""The tone and expression of preaching should reflect the gracious words of Jesus."Note: The quotes provided are direct quotes from the transcript.
The last 20 years or so has seen a real rise in what is called Christ-Centered Preaching. In addition to an emphasis on expository preaching, the goal in Christ-Centered Preaching is to ensure that Christ as the heart of the gospel is found in every sermon. The goal is of course to preach Christ as the Savior of sinners so that unbelievers will be saved. But there is also a deep conviction that Christians need to get back to Christ and the gospel for motivation and instruction in the Christian life. This is not just a clever strategy that modern preachers have come up with but the shape of preaching utilized in the Bible. For example when Paul wants the Corinthian church to excel in the grace of giving he points them to the example of Christ, 2 Cor. 8:9, ‘For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.' Or when Paul wants to encourage husbands to love their wives he talks about how Christ loved the church, Eph. 5:25, ‘Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.' Or when Paul calls the Ephesians to walk in love towards one another, 5:1-2, ‘Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.' Not only does what God did for us in Christ dying on the cross for our sins save us, it also instructs us. We have in Christ the greatest example of love, of service, of holiness; and for our purposes today as we look at Phil. 2:5-8, of humble... Read More Source

Grace Fellowship's pastors discuss how Christ is the fulfillment of all of scripture and how to preach any scripture through the lens of Christ.
The guys continue the series on the means of grace by discussing preaching. What has happened to the preaching of the word of Christ? Jon and Justin begin by distinguishing preaching from teaching. Then, they consider the preaching event. It is an event. (Live streams and sermon audio is not preaching.) The guys conclude with a lengthy discussion on the content of preaching. Preaching is to extol and herald the person and work of Christ in the place of sinners, and preaching requires the right dividing of law and gospel. Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin talk about some of the critiques that are raised against Christ-centered, redemptive-historical preaching, along with the false dichotomy introduced between grammatical-historical and redemptive-historical approaches to exegesis. How can you keep Christ at the center of your preaching? In this episode, Matt Woodley explores that question with Bryan Chapell, the Stated Clerk for the Presbyterian Church in America. In his early years of preaching, Chapel wanted to both teach and reach people. Later, he learned how to restore people, build on his ministry, inspire other preachers, and unite in a common cause. As a young pastor, Chapell's message in sermons was “straighten up, fly right and do better.” But that message started to crush him, and he was convicted to preach the redemptive grace of Christ to his people. Mike Neglia, lead pastor of Calvary Cork in Cork, Ireland joins the podcast this week to talk about Christ-centered hermeneutics: the idea that the Bible is a book about Jesus, and therefore everything in Scripture ultimately points to Jesus is some way. What are "hermeneutics" and is it really accurate to view the Bible in this way? Furthermore, we will discuss if this way of looking at the Bible is actually helpful to the reader of the Bible or the listener of a sermon. Mike and Nick are both on the steering committee of Expositors Collective, a group that seeks to collaborate in order to raise up the next generation of expository preachers and teachers of God's Word, and Mike is the host of the Expositors Collective Podcast, which has an incredible line-up of guests, with interviews to help you grow in your private study and your public proclamation of God's Word.
