In the ever-evolving field of Alzheimer's disease research, the development of disease-modifying therapies has sparked both excitement and debate. Two new publications from University of Kentucky researchers highlight critical advancements and their intersection with other fields that are considered more successful in advances to date. The collaborative papers were led by Greg Jicha, M.D., Ph.D., and Pete Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., both with UK's Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. The work showcases the profound impact of partnerships across UK — in this case between the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and the UK Markey Cancer Center. If you've been a long time listener to this show - i mean a REALLY long time listener - you heard Spencer back on episode 68 in 2017 and Pete on episode 117 in 2018. I'll link to both of those classics in the show notes. Since that time the two organizations have partnered together based on a shared mission of investing in farmer-led innovations. They each have unique aspects to their models, which i'll let Pete, Margaret and Spencer describe to you. But they also are joining forces in a way to put the farmer at the center of investing in and incubating early stage agtech companies. There are some really interesting points brought up in this conversation that I've been thinking about a lot since we recorded it a couple of months ago. Things like, should billion dollar unicorn exits be the measure of success for venture capital? Or number of viable lasting companies? Or maybe jobs and economic impact on communities? Is the fact that venture capital gets poured into so many businesses that fail a feature or a bug when it comes to advancing agriculture? And does the fact that we are in a commodity driven business mean that by definition, all of the value created by companies will eventually get squeezed out and extracted by low cost leaders? Some thought provoking questions that I think you'll enjoy pondering as you listen to Spencer, Margaret, and Pete. Spencer Stensrude invests at the intersection of transformational technology and agriculture. He is the CEO of Ag Ventures Alliance, which is a farmer-owned cooperative with a mission to increase farm profitability. They make venture capital investments in startups with a direct impact on farmers. Before joining AgVA, he started and operated some small businesses, invested in income-producing real estate, and worked in the commercial lending industry.Pete Nelson has been experimental farming, venture investing, and creating innovation hubs in agriculture with farmers across the US and Canada since 1997. He is currently co-founder and President of AgLaunch, a nationally recognized farmer-led innovation platform for advancing the next generation of agricultural technologies.Margaret Oldham is the Vice President of Innovation at AgLaunch. JP MacFadyen, Executive Director of Moncus Park since August 2021, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss the progress made during 2022 to open the park's long-awaited amenities. Previous to serving as ED, JP served the park as Operations Director for two years overseeing construction and developing processes and procedures for daily operations. JP is a native of Pittsburgh, PA, and has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA with a concentration in Operations from the University of Houston. After graduation from Notre Dame, he stumbled across a job opening at Rockwell International. He ended up being hired to work as a space shuttle flight operations specialist as Missions Operations Director at Johnson Space Center in Houston. He looks back and says in March of the year he was interviewed, "It was the best time of year visiting Houston coming down from Notre Dame. The weather was warm and wonderful." And there he landed! His specialty was onboard propulsion, which meant de-orbiting rockets and the thruster jets that changed the altitude of the space shuttles once they were in orbit. At that time, everything prior to computers was still worked out on paper and his first job was the configuration of checklists for safety procedures. JP met his wife, Michelle, in Houston while they worked together at NASA. She was an electrical engineer, a Eunice native and a graduate of UL - Lafayette. JP MacFadyen: "I always say, when you marry a Cajun, it's not a question of if, but when that you'll move back home." In 2005, he moved to Lafayette with his wife Michelle and their four children. The family then opened Great Harvest Bread Co., the first green-certified restaurant in the state of Louisiana. They sold their interest in Great Harvest Bread Co. in 2018 and JP worked as a small business consultant before he joined Moncus Park in 2019 as operations director. He has served as Executive Director since August 2021. We are thrilled to welcome JP to update us on the many improvements that have been added over the past year in 2022. With the support of major donors, community support, and quality staff, Moncus Park has truly become an outdoor paradise in the heart of Lafayette. More than 230,000 visitors have been to the park since January 1, 2022! The wood from the original barn at the UL Horse Farm was saved and used for the construction of the treehouse. JP emphasized the importance of the leadership of the Co-Chair of Moncus Park's Board of Directors, Lenny Lemoine, who encouraged the board to go ahead and open up the park to the public early in 2022, even though the construction was not yet complete. Without that leadership, many of the park's great community events would not have occurred this year. Discover Lafayette sends kudos to JP MacFadyen, Lenny Lemoine, and the entire board of Moncus Park for the gift you have given our community! Lafayette natives have played a large role in the unique attractions at Moncus. Park. The designer of the water feature which evokes the unique character of our region, Jim Garland, is a UL-Lafayette grad who also designed the unique water feature at the Hilliard Art Museum. Jim's early works included the design of the water features at the Bellagio casino in Las Vegas. JP and the team at Moncus have taken great strides to preserve cherished bits of the original Horse Farm. The original wood of the farm is incorporated into the Savoy Family treehouse which opened this year. It offers easy access for children of all ages to enjoy. The treehouse, designed by world-renowned designer Pete Nelson, is nestled within a Live Oak in the new Louisiana-swamped-themed play area. Moncus Park's Amphitheater seats 3000 plus people and was underwritten by First Horizon Bank. People always ask, "who owns the park, how was it purchased, and how is it maintained?" Moncus Park is a public/private park conservancy that operates in a ma...

The noble tree house – all natural materials, sturdy construction, aloof from the troubles of the world. In a more dangerous time in human history, their position above the ground would protect the dweller against environmental difficulties and possible predators. As modern construction has improved, these arboreal residences have become less of a practical dwelling and more of a children's novelty - a secret den erected in many a back garden. But now, these fun shelters are appealing to adults too and many are booking themselves in for a few nights among the treetops. These tree house hotels can be found From Europe to Australia. Best of all, they come in a variety of interesting designs! From the traditional 'four walls and a roof' habitation, such as at TreeHouse Point, in Washington, North America, to the more artistic Nothofagus Hotel in Chilean Patagonia, whose twelve-sided walls make it look like a beehive. If that doesn't appeal, how about a tree pod? The Free Spirit Spheres resort on Vancouver Island in Canada allows guests to stay in one of three yellow spheres, which are suspended from trees. The company was founded in 1998 by Tom Chudleigh, who hand built the pods from cedar wood and fibre glass, and then added fixtures and fittings. Not only are they as safe as houses, they're popular! Visitor numbers have probably doubled in the past five years, Mr Chudleigh tells the BBC. Digs which are original seem to be a big draw. In Sweden, at the Treehotel, numbers have also risen. "In 2010, we had four rooms and around 1,500 guests a year. Today we have seven rooms and nearly 5,000 guests," Kent Lindvall explains. Mr Lindvall co-owns the Treehotel with his wife Britta Lindvall. Each of the domiciles there was designed by an architect, who was asked to make use of the light and surroundings. Their abodes include a mirrored cube, a bird's nest and a UFO. And how about an office? Hi, I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live. What do I mean by that? Well, I've got a good story for you today. Because I was interviewing for my local show Grants Pass VIP, was interviewing a local legend. And he's not just a legend locally, he is a legend worldwide. And he's a legend in the world of treehouses of all things. I got to visit the world's largest conglomeration of tree houses. All out here in Southern Oregon is out in Josephine County, a little place called Takilma, and got to go out to the out and about tree house treeresort. It was started and it's run by a guy named Michael Garnier. And his last name was Garnier. But the pronunciation is different than what he grew up with. But he had decided to add a little bit of the original French flair to it for the show, for all for the showmanship what he was doing. And he is a brilliant marketer in terms of getting what he calls publicitree. Getting good publicitree for his treehouses, and he used a lot of great controversy. Controversy, as he calls it for for getting good publicitree. And what ended up happening is he he originally had a cabin out in the woods that he was renting out as kind of a b&b, a Bed and Breakfast. This was back in the late 80s. And in then, around 1990, he said, What would really be good…he says, I get a little bit of attention with this, but not getting a whole lot. What if I built a tree, if you will, he added had already built a treehouse for his kids. He said, What if I turn that into a place where people can stay and pay to stay the night in a treehouse just make it where it's livable, in a sense and so he went about doing that. Well, he got in trouble with the local authorities because they said, you can't get a permit for a housing structure if it doesn't have proper foundation, in-terms of having a concrete or treated timber foundation. And so he wasn't able to get a permit. So he just built built one up in a tree and figured out how to do it well. And started getting attention with that and they said you can't do that, so they took him to court. And he went back and forth, and has been fighting it for 30 plus years. Back and forth with both the county and the state. He's finally at a point to where it looks better. But during that whole time, he used it as publicity for his treehouse resort, which grew and grew to the point to where he is one of the leading figures on the world stage when it comes to treehouse is building solid treehouses, he developed the Garnier Limb, which is a metal, in a sense of limb that you can connect the tree to the tree house. You may have seen him on TV, he's been on numerous shows all these shows about tree houses, a lot of this is all because of him. He was one of the pioneers in this entire industry. In early 90s, he bought treehouses.com and still owns it. So you go check out his stuff. But amazing individual, it's going to be a great interview. I mean, it was a great interview, it's going to be great when we finally get it released. So I'll let you know when that's available over at Grants Pass VIP. But go check out that podcast and you can listen to everything else I have there and wait for it to make sure you subscribe, so you wait for that to come out. But the magic thing is he was able to take extreme adversity, the type of thing that would normally shut down a company and use it to his benefit. He got attention from that first he got attention from being on the cover of Pete Nelson who have I'm not sure if you're aware he's of a famous author and promoter of treehouses. He had written a book, I believe it was in 94, where his tree house was on the cover.

This week Sarah is joined by a guest host, Cass Mao, Principal Advisor at AgThentic, to chat with Pete Nelson of AgLaunch about how growers and agtech companies can work together in a model that they call "farmer-centric innovation"Pete Nelson, originally a farmer and an English major at University, has been actively involved in building the support ecosystem for new agricultural enterprises for over 15 years. He has worked with a variety of public and private sector partners and helped to launch multiple startup companies. More recently he's been working on sector-specific initiatives to fund, incubate, and accelerate agricultural companies with high growth potential. AgLaunch, which includes accelerator programs, a fund, and more, is focused on commercializing early stage agricultural innovation by working with farmers.Cass and Sarah wanted to speak with Pete after writing a report last year on innovation ecosystems, and how best practices in the US can be applied to Australia. Rather than just look at hotspots like Silicon Valley, the report explored ag-focused places, like St. Louis and Tennessee, where AgLaunch is located. The report, called Building a globally Recognised AgTech ecosystem in Australia, is available here: https://agthentic.com/reportsIn this episode, Pete explains what “farmer-centric innovation” means, how AgLaunch is driving it, and how having growers at the table fundamentally changes outcomes for startups and regional communities. How can a preacher or Bible teacher manage his or her time in order to maximize their effectiveness as they deliver God’s Word? There are only 168 hours per week and 24 hours per day; and many important commitments already claim many of those hours. * This episode was archived June 2019 and is only available for subscribers Sam chats about Pete Nelson and Treehouse masters and recommends you watch one or two episodes because of the sheer love of wood and construction. Also check out their website Nelson treehouse as they sell books, merchandise, accomodation, construction plans and lot's more. I really like the fact their family seems close and all involved in this one business or extensions of this business The core business is still a design and build business in a niche market and they have pardon the pun 'branched out' very successfully. Great ideas for contractors, consultants and anyone with their own business Patreon.com/funwithproperty is live and kicking and needs subscribers You can subscribe for $1 a month to support or You can subscribe for $5 a month to unlock exclusive material This is a long-term podcast and we are committed to at least 5 years continuous broadcast but most likely far beyond. If you’re a fan of the TV show “Tree House Masters” or you fondly recall your childhood days hoarding scrap pieces of lumber to build a fort or a tree house, you’ll be almost as enamored with our guest this week as Michelle is. Pete Nelson is the proud and ecstatic patriarch of a treetop dwelling empire of craftsmen and family members who have built over 300 tree houses; and they’re not stopping there! In fact we’re pretty sure that he doesn’t even seem to know the meaning of the word “STOP”. Case in Point: This week he took time off of TWO simultaneous builds to chat with us about his inspiration, his dedication, and lifelong pursuit of design perfection in the tree house industry. No more nailing 2x6’s to trees, his floating tiny houses sit atop pretty impressive pieces of technological genius. If you’ve ever wanted to be inspired by a tiny house that’s 30 feet above ground and welcomes squirrels as neighbors, we dedicate this show to YOU! And, Pete, if you’re reading this. Thank you, again, and a million times. We are thankful and inspired and entertained and all want to be just like you when we grow up. If we ever grow up that is.. #inspiredbypeterpan https://www.nelsontreehouseandsupply.com/

Welcome to episode 56 of Uncharted Performance! This week we are returning to Black Flag Athletics to talk to Lindsey Kelly, Tom Rini, and Pete Nelson II. The topic of this discussion, as all three of our guests have extensive experience in, is coaching. We start off with learning why coaching is such a passion for them and how it helps them find fulfillment. As Tom puts it, it is an opportunity to give something of yourself and build a relationship with those you’re coaching that impacts the rest of their lives.  Lindsey, Pete and Tom describe their growth as coaches and give some useful advice on how others can evolve in this unique role. Learning from other coaches, developing good communication with clients of all different types and going out and getting that all important experience are just some of those critical skills.
