Bad college football, like that place in Ypsilanti with the ashtray for a football field. It's Short Time Shots. I'm Jason Bryant.Wilmington's program hasn't been back that long, but the Quakers picked up a competitive 27-26 criteria win over Muskingum in what was decided by the FOURTH criteria. Can you name the fourth criteria without looking it up? Most can't, so don't be down on yourself. It's most near fall points. The teams were tied in wins at five, tied in six-point victories with three each and tied with match points at 33 apiece. So it was Wilmington's 10 nearfall points to Muskingum's seven that was the difference. But when I wrote that first line, it got me digging. Coach Chris Basford is in his second year there and he started last season inheriting a roster of four guys. He ended with six. He's got 20 now and trying to create some type of positive culture there.“This was a total team effort. It was a great win for our young program... the first in 6 years. It was priceless to see the faces of the guys getting their first college win to go along with a team win. They did a great job battling and picking each other up,” said Basford. So when was Wilmington's last official dual win? Best I can find using the internet and all its archives - January 5, 2010 … which was a 25-22 win over Baldwin Wallace, which, was NOT good then.Speaking of Baldwin Wallace, they blanked Heidelberg 51-0 and what was dubbed MUSTACHE MANIA! I don't know what Mustache Mania was, but it didn't really matter what it was for Baldwin Wallace as they had four techs and three falls among their bonus victories. The fastest fall came at 197 pounds from Carter Lloyd, who got the match-ender at 1:50. In case you're wondering, Coach Gibbs' Baldwin Wallace team came into the season ranked third.Zac Stray's major decision at heavyweight completed a large comeback by Otterbein as the Cardinals upended Mount Union 20-18. Otterbein was down 15-3 after four bouts and 15-6 halfway through the dual. North Central beat Carthage 44-3.Saint Vincent's return to competition after 50 years away from the sport came up short as Penn State-Behrend bested the Bearcats 26-17 in Latrobe. The first win in the program's revived history came from 133-pounder Ryan Klingensmith out of Kiski Prep. Behrend's Matthew Caldwell's tech fall at 197 sealed it for the Lions - yes, pretty much all of the Penn State branch campuses are Lions or Nittany Lions or Roaring Lions or Tea Sipping Lions or something. In Division II, Coker edged Emmanuel 21-20 in a Conference Carolinas dual, with Coker heavyweight Hamilton Cooper getting an 8-0 major decision at 285 pounds to give Coker the win. But the win actually didn't come on the extra bonus point. Emmanuel was docked a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct, so instead of the major sending the match to criteria, Coker won outright. And here's the gut-punching kicker - Emmanuel would have won on the third criteria, most match points, 48-47. Uffda. Also in the conference, Newberry beat Emory & Henry 51-6. The Wolves picked up five falls in the victory over the Wasps, who are transitioning from Division III to Division II.McKendree beat Kentucky Wesleyan 42-12. Quincy beat NAIA Missouri Baptist 32-20.In the NAIA, St. Ambrose heavyweight Jeremiah Morris picked up a 6-3 win over Sam Fleming lifted the Bees past host Graceland 18-17. On the women's side, North Central's women also beat Carthage, coming away with a 38-3 win in CCIW action. Fastest fall of the night came at 130 pounds where two-time All-American Amani Jones got the touche in 41 seconds. The Cardinals are 8-0 already to start the season. Missouri Baptist's women beat Quincy 30-14.A metric crap ton of news, much more than this, can be delivered to your inbox daily. We talk about when the who you are working for is greater than what you are doing. Dave has since held every position in the company's front office. As one of the longest tenured executives in the sport, Dave has worked with senior executives and Ceo's of many of the country's largest companies. He has been to the white House multiple times after winning NASCAR championships.Dave is also the author of the book Taking the lead: winning business principles that fuel Joe Gibbs Racing. In this interview Dave touches on many lessons learned along the way. He shares a bit about dealing with Tourette syndrome. We also discuss how he always remembers how it all started, as an intern working out of a closet as an office without even an outlet for a light or a phone. Listen in to hear how Dave went from unpaid intern to t-shirt guy to President of Joe Gibbs Racing.Next week my guest is Dennis Miller, Founder and Chairman of DCM Associates, Inc. Brian Mitchell joins us on this week’s episode of the podcast. Brian was a longtime Washington Redskins that started his career as a 5th round draft pick in 1990, and he went on to become a kickoff and punt return specialist. Brian is the all-time leader in kickoff and punt return yards and is the NFL all-time leader with 13 total special teams’ touchdowns. Brian is somebody who has done it as well as anybody, and there’s certainly an argument to be made that he’s the greatest of all time when it comes to kickoff and punt returns. Brian is also in the Redskins Ring of Fame, and was just nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is a three-time first team all-pro player and is second only to Jerry Rice in total yards. Brian had an illustrious playing career, and today he works on TV and radio in the DC area. In this episode, they discuss what childhood was like for him (5:00), which of his older siblings had the biggest impact on him (7:10), what his parents were like (8:15), how teachers reacted to his mentality in school (11:00), the demographics of the area he grew up in (12:10), what his dad did after the military (15:35), where his strong academics came from (16:10), the three best lessons his dad taught him (18:10), his experience playing quarterback and other positions (25:30), his thoughts on the mindset in preparation vs. performance (30:20), how he tortured himself in the off-season, so he could have fun during the season (34:30), what’s motivating him to do the work (37:00), how he shifts from the tunnel to being able to talk trash on the field (39:30), his thoughts on what makes a great coach (47:10), his experience at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (48:45), how he became a returner (50:30), how he came back from plays where he didn’t do well (52:00), how he always thinks about things as challenges instead of threats (54:00), some of the things Coach Gibbs instilled in him (56:45), his thoughts on mobile quarterbacks and how that affects the rest of the team (58:40), what made his super bowl team special (1:03:30), the polarity of patience vs. aggressiveness (1:06:00), how he thinks about football (1:10:30), what he thinks about competitiveness (1:15:30), and what he’s learned about golf (1:18:20). Thank you to Brian for coming on the podcast. Brian is on the Team 980 from 1-4 pm, and then he is on NBC Sports Washington on a multiple of shows like Redskins 100, and the Redskins pre and post games. He is also starting to get his foundation, the Brian Mitchell Foundation, back up. Rick "Doc" Walker on motivation - "My philosophy is that you have to learn how to push your own button. . . if I teach you how to hit the reset button, then you can reestablish yourself. Because I’m not going to be there to hold your hand. . . People have power within themselves, they just need help getting there." Our Town host Andy Ockershausen and Guest Rick "Doc" Walker Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen, and this is Our Town. I've known our next guest, I don't even call him a guest, our next friend almost 40 years. That's a long time. He's a giantin his profession. He was the UCLA Lineman of the Year Honorary, a Rose Bowl Champion when he explained to me that he beat Ohio State, that ain't easy. The AP named him an All-American. Then he played starting tight-end for Coach Gibbs in the Championship game of 1983 Superbowl of the '82 champions. If you remember Doc, that was a strike year. That was then and now is now. Doc, where does he not work? He's the Redskins' pre-game show for Fox 5. He's the analyst for ESPN Radio with Sonny, Larry, and Chris Cooley. He works at Comcast Sports Network. He hosts the ProView on MASN. He owns the ProView, which is also an excellent magazine. He co-hosts a daily talk show on ESPN Radio 980. I'm exhausted just thinking about it. What does he do in the off-season? He has his own business. A motivational speaker and was chosen one of the regions top speakers. We'll get into that later. Where does our guest not work? Please welcome my dear friend Rick "Doc" Walker. Rick Doc Walker Hey Boss. Andy Ockershausen: You are the best. Incredible. I call you because when I listen to you, you are as good an analyst as I've ever heard of a game. And I've been listening to football since the Redskins were broadcast by Harry Wismer. Andy Ockershausen: Oh I know you are. You are so important to Our Town Doc. And you've gotten around so much, and what you've contributed is your thoughts to young people make a big difference. It does Doc. Rick Doc Walker Well most people here are afraid of barriers. When you're in Southern California, I mean we go 100 miles to a party, like to San Diego and L.A. Well here, people from Virginia don't go to Maryland. Maryland don't go to Virginia. D.C. doesn't go to Virginia. So in most of my days I'm in Fairfax, Montgomery County, Prince George's County, all in the same day. I mean I just- Andy Ockershausen: That's Our Town. You get around in Our Town. Rick Doc Walker But if you're not from here. People here are landlocked. And they have these fences built. And they're so limited in my opinion. Andy Ockershausen: But the river closes a lot of that. It scares people to cross that river. I've seen it both ways, Doc. Rick Doc Walker Yeah, but still. I have a car. People go ... Well I'm over in Prince George's County I go, "Okay, I have a car. I'll be okay." Prince William, I go to Woodbridge, Springfield- Andy Ockershausen: Where do you not go? Whatever happened to your restaurant that I remember so vividly. Rick Doc Walker Scoreboard. Andy Ockershausen: I remember Scoreboard very well. Rick Doc Walker Yeah, we had a great time. The problem is in that business, if you grow too fast, we had a great idea, great concept- Andy Ockershausen: Great food, incidentally. Rick Doc Walker Great food. But if you stay in one place, you got a shot. Two, you cut your resources in half. Most people aren't worth their weight in terms of work ethic. You know the average person is lazy as hell. And so most people are out trying to get what they can take not what they can earn. So you better be in the management business, otherwise everything you have will be gone. So I've learned a lot about civilians since I stopped playing ball. Andy Ockershausen: You almost have to live there. Rick Doc Walker Well yeah, the smart people do. Andy Ockershausen: The restaurant business. Rick Doc Walker Duke was always there. He got to be there by the cash register.
It's a preview podcast on a Sunday. Weird, right? We had some good stuff lined up, but it didn't come together. Won't spoil the surprise in case we can do it for the bowl preview. Before getting to the pod, there is something we forgot to discuss in it. That is DB Derrick Dixon airing some displeasure with his role on the team via Twitter soon after the victory against Kansas State. Now I'm all for players not being satisfied with their role on the team or thinking they deserve more playing time, but Twitter isn't the place to do it and unfortunately, probably secured a release to transfer at the end of this season by doing so. I'm sure this wasn't the first attempt to discuss the situation with coaches, but after not getting anywhere privately, the next place is publicly to try and force the coaches hand one way or another. This is typical in coaching changes whether it be coordinator or head coach. Sometimes talent doesn't transcend schemes or doesn't reveal itself in practice. Coach Gibbs, for all the struggles, seems to have a clear idea of what he wants and for whatever reason, Derrick Dixon isn't seeing the field. I hope the situation with Derrick gets figured out. He does have talent and I think we need all the bodies we can get at the moment, but it wasn't the best decision he could have made. Now on to the pod.
