What is stranger than fiction? The stories of worldwide corruption. In this podcast series, co-hosts Tom Fox, the Voice of Compliance and Mike DeBernardis, partner at Hughes Hubbard, discuss some of the most audacious corruption cases in anti-corruption enforcement. More importantly, they will discuss the lessons learned on what your organization can do to prevent running afoul of international anti-bribery laws. In this episode of Season 2, Tom and Mike explore the infamous Crazy Eddie scandal, one of the most audacious corporate frauds in history. The scheme, orchestrated by Eddie Antar and his family during the 1980s and 1990s, involved tax evasion, inventory inflation, and money laundering through a method known as the ‘Panama Pump.' They defrauded various stakeholders, including customers, bankers, investors, and governmental bodies, ultimately leading to Eddie's extradition from Israel and imprisonment. This episode dissects the scandal's rapid unraveling post-IPO, focusing on flawed corporate governance and oversight. By examining the pitfalls of family-controlled businesses and the lack of transparency exemplified by the Crazy Eddie and Boar's Head Listeria scandals, the hosts underscore the critical importance of checks and balances in corporate structures. Are you looking for a story that is 100% guaranteed to blow your mind? A true crime tale that'll leave you wondering how crooks got away with it for so long in the first place? Well, hold on to your girdle, because this one's a doozy. It's got everything: insurance scams, fake passports, an undercover sting operation, Israeli really bank accounts, and huge sales on some of the best TVs and VCRs around (sales tax not included). Best of all, you can listen to this story for the low, low price of FREE! Now that price is insane! Ray teaches Rob about how a mom-and-pop consumer electronics store went from being a tri-state curiosity to a national sensation; who the real man is behind all those infamous ads; why having a CPA in the family comes in handy when you're committing tax fraud; and why building an empire on a foundation of shady financials and skimming off the top probably isn't the best business model. If you like what we are doing, please support us on Patreon.TEAMRay HebelRobert W. NO ONE does fraud like Eddie Antar, and Crazy Eddie is the bizarre story that got Becca hooked on fraud! Adam, Becca, and their Dad Jeff pop a few ludes and drop down the rabbit hole into a 1970's New York City punk rock fever dream. They meet a young Eddie Antar scamming tourists in a seedy Time Square clip joint and follow his journey to become the eccentric millionaire founder of Crazy Eddie Electronics. Antar was a marketing genius, and by the mid 1980's commercials for the chain were inescapable, shoppers were practically screamed at to rush out to Crazy Eddie's because ‘HIS PRICES ARE INSANE!!!!' The insane prices, of course, were facilitated by an elaborate criminal racket. Money laundering, insurance fraud, tax evasion, bribery, insider trading… Eddie Antar did it all! But when the cash begins to dry up, Eddie's increasingly desperate and brazen behavior puts him in the crosshairs of the SEC. That's when Eddie Antar became an international fugitive and left his family, who enabled and benefited from his behavior, holding the bag. Our guest this week is Richard Behar, an award-winning investigative reporter who spent 15 years chronicling the life of Bernie Madoff, the mastermind behind the largest Ponzi scheme in history. Behar is the author of the newly released blockbuster book Madoff: The Final Word. Before Madoff died in prison, Behar and Madoff had more than 50 phone conversations, exchanged more than 300 emails, and met face-to-face three times. When Madoff was arrested in December 2008, his decades-long scam unraveled, revealing approximately $68 billion in purported assets across nearly 5,000 client accounts. In stark contrast, Madoff had less than $300 million, having swindled countless victims, including banks, charities, colleges, pension funds, and notable individuals such as Steven Spielberg, Sandy Koufax, Kevin Bacon, and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel. On this week' episode, Behar shares how Madoff sustained his scam for decades, the many people who facilitated his fraud, why his investors were so gullible, and what steps everyone should take to avoid falling victim to swindlers. As an exclusive bonus, listeners will hear two short private phone conversations between Behar and Madoff, recorded during Madoff's incarceration at a federal prison in Butner, North Carolina. Behar, honored as one of the top 100 business journalists of the 20th century, has received more than 20 major journalism awards. He previously worked on the staff of Forbes, Time, and Fortune. He also contributed reporting to CNN, PBS, and the BBC. If you believe you could never be tricked like thousands of Madoff's trusting investors were, you need to listen closely to this week's episode. This week we discuss the electronics store Crazy Eddie that ballooned in New York City during the 1980s because it had marketing so memorable they were better known than the president. But the whole thing was an illicit front for its scuzzy owner Eddie Antar to steal whatever he could get his hands on.

Crazy Eddie had a slew of stores selling cheap electronics, touted by infectious advertising. Like the universe itself, the Crazy Eddie empire expanded exponentially. Money flowed, celebrities orbited, good times rolled. But then, like a capitalist black hole, it all imploded. So long, Crazy Eddie. Godspeed, you crooked warrior.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the second of 7 podcasts recorded at T.H.E. Show 2023, we expand our conversation into the distrubtion arm of Denmark's ultra-luxe brand, Gryphon Audio Designs ApS. We speak with Anthony Chiarella, Director of Sales & Marketing for Gryphon Audio Designs N.A., which was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of the brand headquartered in Denmark, to extend Gryphon's availability through its U.S. and Canadian retailer partners. Anthony shares his unique background and provides an industry insider's perspective of the high-end audio business. Anthony Chiarella officially became an audio geek at the age of 13 when he joined his high school AV Club (“We got beaten-up by the football team every Friday!”) and by 16 he was working as an Audio Salesman at New York's notorious Crazy Eddie. After earning his MBA, he achieved success on Wall Street but soon realized he was more interested in HiFi than High Finance and took a sales position at Lyric HiFi, then the mecca for High End Audio, where he met many industry luminaries including Harry Pearson, Founder and Publisher of The Absolute Sound (TAS). Anthony soon started writing for TAS and most other High End mags and wound up freelancing for Maxim, Esquire, GQ and other mainstream Men's Magazines. At the same time, some of the companies about whose products he was writing were looking for sales and marketing help, which led him to found Specialty Sound and Vision (SSV), a NY Metro Rep Firm, in 1996. Dedicated to working with the territory's best retailers, SSV is considered “THE High End Rep Firm.” After the Great Recession, most of the NY Metro retailers closed, so SSV became a National Sales Management company, representing Gryphon, Brinkmann and other Ultra-Luxe High End Manufacturers across the US and Canada.Thank you to our sponsors Q Acoustics & SVS for the support of our programming!https://www.qacoustics.comhttps://www.svsound.comRelated links: Podcast: Gryphon Audio's #1 Dealer, Joseph Cali at T.H.E. This week Matt treats the lads to the saga of Crazy Eddie, the sales and advertising icon of New York who pioneered as much in advertising as he innovated inventory and tax scams while battling the jealousy within his own family!
After a short break, Nate is back with an update on some future projects and appearances before sitting down with his guest, Jefferson Berry. Jefferson talks about growing up, the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, the music on the west coast in 1967, getting into the radio industry, moving back to the east coast, starting at WYSP and the early days of the Howard Stern show, bringing Crazy Eddie into the Philly market, writing music, the art of storytelling in songwriting, getting out of the radio business and becoming a teacher in the inner city, starting the band Hippies and Hillbillies and the birth of his Urban Acoustic sound, the influence of teaching on his songwriting, having Symere Woods in his class (who would go on to become Lil Uzi Vert), the tragic death of Runup Rico, losing students to gun violence, the deep poverty issues in Philadelphia, his song "Locks and Guns," putting together the Urban Acoustic Coalition and recording his music, recording Prairie Fire and Dreams of Modern Living concurrently, working with Emily Drinker and Irene Lambrou, the album release show at the Living Room in Ardmore, and the upcoming the Urban Acoustic movie. At the peak of his popularity in the 1980s, electronics retailer “Crazy Eddie” was better known for his screaming and gesticulating television commercials promoting “insane” prices than were then-Mayor Ed Koch and President Ronald Regan. Thousands of customers would flock to store openings, hoping to nab a free t-shirt and get a glimpse of the unhinged pitchman. Behind the scenes, however, Eddie Antar — the real Crazy Eddie, not the TV actor who portrayed him in the commercials — was a thieving, lying, cheat who defrauded just about everyone who ever trusted him, and was ultimately sentenced to eight years in prison. Veteran investigative reporter Gary Weiss has written a page-turning biographical exposé of Eddie Antar: Retail Gangster: The Insane, Real-Life Story of Crazy Eddie. This week Gary and host Dean Rotbart explore both the genius and insanity of Crazy Eddie, a business crook unlike any other in American history. Eddie Antar turned a tiny Brooklyn store into the largest electronics retailer. In the 1970s and 1980s, his commercials were everywhere. “Crazy Eddie! His prices are insaaaaane!" They were even spoofed on Saturday Night Live. But Crazy Eddie's success was a fraud from day one. In fact, before Enron, Madoff, and The Wolf of Wall Street, Antar's corruption was second to none. When it was uncovered, it turned out to be one of the largest SEC frauds in American history. I recently sat down with Gary Weiss, author of Retail Gangster: The Insane, Real-Life Story of Crazy Eddie. What Weiss told me affirms the old adage that truth is often stranger than fiction. An Occasional Podcast Halloween special. What ever happened to Crazy Eddie's chain of electronics stores? In this episode, we explore the rise, fraud and fallout of one of the biggest retail scams that just kept getting bigger and bigger. What started as a small electronics chain grew into 43 stores in four states and an alleged $300 million in sales. If you were around the area in the 80's, the signature high energy "crazy Eddie" commercials saturated the popular culture at the time. His brand of intense media blitz earned a place in the mindset of many, millions of stolen dollars and a crimial investigation. This epsiode also marks the return of co-host Bryan Beasley, special thanks to him for his many contributions helping put this complex show together. Spotting a stock fraud is extremely difficult, but finding some smoke is significantly easier. Founded by Eddie Antar, Crazy Eddie was a chain of consumer electronic stores in the Northeast. After going public in the 1980s, the stock became nearly a ten-bagger before investigators found it to be a fraud. Investors may not have suspected that the retailer boosted profit margins by manipulating a cash skim, but there were some other signs that the soaring stock price didn't tell the whole story. Ricky Mulvey talked with Gary Weiss, author of “Retail Gangster: The Insane, Real-Life Story of Crazy Eddie” about: - Why investors bought into Eddie Antar's hype - How criminals save money on sales tax - The eventual downfall of Crazy Eddie Host: Ricky Mulvey Guest: Gary Weiss Engineers: Rick Engdahl, Dan Boyd
The Crazy Eddie stores of the 1980s are probably most remembered by the Jerry Carrell commercials that have been parodied in the movies, TV shows, and even by other CEOs in the past such as Steve Ballmer.Gary Weiss is the author of Retail Gangster, The Insane, Real-Life Story of Crazy Eddie. Through Gary's research and captivating narrative, we learn the origin story of Eddie Antar and how he first started various skimming schemes to both undercut competitors and stash untaxed sales and profits in bed mattresses and overseas bank accounts. We also learn about one of the masterminds of Crazy Eddie's IPO and the fraud that was required to support a high stock price following the public offering. Finally, we hear about how the house of cards crumbled and the family's failed attempt to take the company private in order to hide their misdoings.Foresight: The CPA PodcastHear about how sustainability is integrating into the business world.Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

Jose Torres, senior economist at Interactive Brokers, says economic risks right now are "skewed to the upside," noting that gas prices could reverse course in the fall; with the market showing Tuesday that it can't handle service prices rising even as oil prices fall, Torres says that the picture could get ugly if gas prices rise and other prices keep going up too, increasing the need for the Federal Reserve to act and the likelihood of a recession next year. Also on the show, author Gary Weiss discusses his latest book, "Retail Gangster: The Inside Real-Life Story of Crazy Eddie,” Greg McBride, Bankrate.com's chief financial analyst, covers bank fees -- one of the few areas where prices are mostly coming down right now -- and Kevin Rendino, portfolio manager/chief executive officer for 180 Degree Capital, discusses "value turnaround investing" in the Market Call.

How'd he do it and what happened to him?SEGMENT 2 with Grant McCracken, starting at 19:30: A hundred years ago, when we went from an agrarian society to an industrialized one, life changed for most Americans. You want to hear more, right?Sponsored by Truly Financial.
