Buki shares that when you get in the room it feels good and it's a cause for celebration but it's only base camp. You've still got a whole mountain to climb. Be prepared to play the long game When the industry shuts down, you don't shut down - you hone your craft and strategize Embrace delayed gratification and know that the rewards will come later Ask yourself: and then what? Stay ready so you never have to get ready Focus on relationships Buki is the creator/host/executive producer of the Emmy award winning Table for All, which takes you into NJ restaurants and home kitchens to try new cuisines, meet the people and hear their fascinating stories behind the recipes, serving up a cinematic docu-series focusing on culture and diversity. Several guests have said this to me: Working harder IS working smarter. My guest for this episode of Camera Ready & Abel - multi Emmy nominated Television Host, Producer and journalist, Buki Elegbede - says his Work Ethic is his Superpower. Buki believes his work ethic is what has given him a competitive advantage in an industry that is saturated with talent. As he says, quoting Milton Berle, “when opportunity doesn't knock, build your own door.” More takeaways: Work ethic includes working smart and trusting your gut As a producer putting together the right team is everything Learn what everybody does, the value to the team and respect it With the right team in place you can go to the stratosphere Preparation, preparation, preparation Buki also jokes that for Christmas he's going to ask Santa for audacity. Nan Sterman is a California native, garden expert, garden designer, author, botanist, and award-winning communicator. Nan has long been dedicated to the transformation of planted landscapes from overly thirsty and resource-intensive to climate appropriate and sustainable. In addition to designing gardens, Nan works hard to connect plants to people and the planet. Some examples of that work include: · Her award-winning public TV show, A Growing Passion which Nan hosts, produces, and writes. Forty-eight episodes air on KPBS TV in San Diego, on CREATE TV, and are available online at www.AGrowingPassion.com. · Nan's most recent book, Hot Color, Dry Garden, is a guide for creating color-filled, waterwise gardens. She's written hundreds of articles for newspapers and magazines, too. · In 2014, Nan founded the San Diego Gardener Facebook group, where more than 16,000 people discuss plants and gardening in Southern California. · At the beginning of the COVID quarantine, Nan co-founded Grab & Grow Gardens to support food-insecure communities during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. To date, Grab & Grow Gardens has supplied more than 26,000 starter vegetable gardens for families and seniors in need across the region. · Nan leads tours to garden adventures around the world, including Europe, South Africa, Costa Rica, and the US. · In 2022, Nan kicked off the online Garden School, targeted at passionate home gardeners. In addition to a monthly garden membership, Nan teaches online and in-person seed-starting workshops every spring. Nan's approach to gardening dates back to the 1970s when she was involved in the first wave of the sustainability movement. She trained at the Integral Urban House in Berkeley, California, earned a botany degree from Duke University, a master's in biology from UC Santa Barbara, and a master's in instructional design from San Diego State University. Prior to delving into the gardening world, Nan created curricula, training programs, and educational materials for Fortune 500 companies, zoos, aquaria, and not-for-profit organizations. Her ability to take complex information and create effective educational programs is one of her greatest strengths, and a major source of her successes. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/plantatrilliontrees/support

"This is your one life. Think about it: If you dream of travel, it's not as hard as you might think. You can find ways to make it happen.” –Rolf Potts In this episode of Deviate, Rolf and Ernest talk about how "vagabonding" is defined, how Rolf has come to define home, and what the premise of The Vagabond's Way is (2:00); how Rolf researched and organized the quotes and anecdotes and philosophies that went into the book (10:00); how mistakes and misadventures are an inevitable part of the travel process, and how time is one's truest form of wealth (14:30); how the quiet experience of travel counts for more in life than travel that is performed for status (20:00); how no amount of planning can prepare you for the discoveries of each new day on the road, and how curiosity is more important than expertise on the road (27:30); how over-dependence on technology can compromise the novel experience of travel (33:30); advice for people leaving their country for the first time, advice for people traveling inside the US, and advice for keeping travel fresh over the long-term (38:00). “I think sometimes as travel writers our most important job is to be a listener -- to listen to the stories that people are telling each other in a place.” –Rolf Potts In this episode of Deviate, Rolf and Ernest talk about why home is such an important place in one's life, even when one travels to more far-flung places (3:00); why the vagabonding ethos begins with the willingness to give oneself permission to travel in life, and how Rolf's new book, The Vagabond's Way, furthers the vagabonding ethos in a daily-reading format (15:00); the difficulty of figuring out which place in the world is your "favorite," and how food becomes a part of one's iconic travel memories (32:00); and why it helps to be confident and "ride tall in the saddle" if you sometimes feel out of place as a traveler (41:00). It's apparent on public television, and Create TV is a perfect example of rich programming with a broad appeal. One of the rising stars of that channel is a first-generation Lebanese-American chef named Julie Sageer who was given the name “Julie Taboulie” as a child and the name stuck. They enjoy playing in it, making mud pies, and digging up worms. But, when kids play in the dirt, they get it everywhere and on everything. It's a mess for parents. But, it also might be part of the reason your kids are so cheerful. In fact, scientists have reason to believe that playing with dirt makes you happier. Studies have found a microbacteria in soil called mycobacterium vaccae that lowers stress and helps you feel happier. It almost seems too good to be true. So, we invited Dr. Christopher Lowry, professor of integrative physiology at the University of Colorado Boulder researching this phenomenon, to discuss the connection between dirt and happiness. Couples Claustrophobia (0:52:50) At the beginning of most marriages, a couple's natural instinct is to spend as much time together as possible. You wake up together, eat together, shop together... you do everything together. However, as time goes on, each person gradually needs a little more personal space. This isn't a bad thing. In fact, a little alone time is healthy, it allows you to indulge in your own interests and hobbies, and makes you crave each other's company more as a result .But the question then becomes, how can couples establish a balance of alone time and together time and how can they do so without causing hurt feelings? Dr. Kathy McCoy, author, journalist, and, psychotherapist, is here to discuss this idea of couples' claustrophobia and how to find balance while being sensitive to our partner's needs. Aging is Empowering (1:08:25) Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought “hm… this outfit really is too young for me?” or “gosh, I look a thousand years old!” I do this all the time! Our culture truly has a negative perspective on ageing, but the life expectancy has never been longer than it is now! So, because all of us are getting older, how can we learn to stop feeling like getting older is the end of the world? With us today to answer this question is Carl Honoré, a bestselling author and broadcaster, and the unintentional godfather of the Slow Movement. Keeping Your Car Nice (1:28:08) Buying a car is probably one of the most expensive purchases you'll ever make. Which means it's important to take care of it so that your money doesn't go to waste after a few short years. But, there are so many little things to remember when it comes to keeping your car looking as new as it was when you bought it. You have to wash it, wax it, vacuum it, dust it, get the oil changed, and the list goes on. But how often do we have to do all of this and what are some best practices for maintaining our cars? Joining us to share her expert advice for keeping the interior and exterior of our cars looking nice is the executive editor of U.S News Best Cars, Jamie Deaton.
Self-Sufficiency (0:00:00) Financial independence is a serious challenge for many families. Unfortunately, some people who are working overtime or juggling 2 or 3 jobs are still living paycheck to paycheck. This can put serious pressure on both individuals and families. Luckily, there's a non-profit in Colorado who is working to help those in similar situations, and they're doing it in a unique way. The Altruistic Brain (0:52:43) Thomas Hobbes defined humans as being naturally selfish. Locke posited that we were moral and peace-loving. Rousseau held the middle ground and theorized that instead we are all born as blank slates—formed and shaped by our experiences. For centuries, philosophers and scientists have theorized, hypothesized, and generally made all sorts of inquiries into the qualities of human nature. However, modern neuroscience science has been able to open previously sealed doors as a result of technological advancements. Dr. Sandra Sherman, co-author of “The Altruistic Brain: Why We Are Naturally Good”, is here to discuss a new addition to the field in the form of altruistic brain theory and how we are physically wired for kindness. Teaching Kids Independence (1:32:06) We watch our kids grow up and become independent, making their own decisions, moving out... and we're conflicted. We're proud of them for growing into themselves, but We're also their parent and want to baby them forever. I think that as parents we have a responsibility to care for our kids, but at some point we have to teach them to let go (and let go ourselves). So how do we do that? Well today, we have Dr. Carl Pickhardt, a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience, here with us today to discuss the best way we can teach our children independence.
