When you think of sharks, do you think Jaws? Or a creature with enough understanding to seek help from a person? Would you be surprised to know, that someone has been working with sharks for years to the point, that they allow her to take out hooks lodged in their skin? Given our misconceptions of the creatures, I'd imagine you would be. Cristina Zenato is that person, who's a master diver and expert on sharks. She's built an amazing relationship with the sharks around the Bahamas, creating a deep connection with them, to a degree I can only understand through bonds we build with more familiar animals. In this interview Cristina gives us a deeper understanding of sharks, her ability to work with them, the virtue in knowing a single place deeply, the reality of the marine environment that's facing environmental destruction, and some wisdom from the sharks. In this episode, I am joined by professional diver, ocean and cave explorer, shark ecologist, photographer, speaker, writer, and conservationist Cristina Zenato to talk about shark behavior and how to care for these vital members of the ocean ecosystem. Cristina alone has pulled out over 300 fishing hooks from sharks' mouths with her own hands. She tells me how she first got started doing this and how she has developed close relationships with so many of the sharks she's helped in the reefs of the Bahamas. We discuss how certain sharks have personalities and Cristina dispels many of the widespread myths about sharks. We talk about her organization People of the Water and how she was able to make sharks a protected species in the Bahamas, which was a major legislative victory. Alannah Vellacott is truly a creature of the Caribbean Waters, in every possible sense. She's been famously dubbed "The Real Life Little Mermaid" by many notable figures, and for good reason. Aside from freediving, scuba diving, working on several Shark Week episodes, and simply living the Island Life we all dream about… she actually works to preserve and rebuild the very world that sustains her lifestyle (and the planet, for that matter!) Land Based Coral restoration with Coral Vita is a unique process that she explains with great enthusiasm during our interview. It's a system that allows coral to grow up to 50 times faster than it would in the wild, helping revitalize dead or dying reefs. Alannah is wildly connected, seen working with the likes of André Musgrove, Cristina Zenato, Scuba Radio, and even Samuel Jackson. A flagship citizen of Grand Bahama Island, Alannah is armed with a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences, with an extensive resumé ranging from Cape Eleuthra Institute, BREEF, Perry institute for Marine Sciences, and a Scuba Instructor with over 16 years of diving. I got to hang out with Alannah at The 2023 DEMA show in New Orleans, where she not only represented Coral Vita, but put on a show with fellow Mermaids bringing an incredibly fun vibe to the festivities. ***To donate directly to the MAUI FIRES FUNDRAISER, please visit this page: https://ilimanator.com/maui/ *** Founder of @deepseamagazine Jeff Scott has launched so many locally-focused brands that I had trouble keeping up. In fact, I really wanted to know HOW he found time for them all, and do it so seamlessly. That was one of many questions I had the honor of asking him throughout the interview, but the main focus was on the new DeepSea Magazine channel. DeepSea channel has featured everyone from Fabien Cousteau, to the upcoming collaboration with Cristina Zenato. While DeepSea Mag took center stage, we also discussed his DeepSea Locker clothing brand, co branded by big-named conservationists such as Paul Degelder. Jeff's work in film production, advertising, content creation and of course, as a Navy Salvage Diver, gives him first-hand experience in all things “Made Under Pressure”, which is his signature trademark and tagline. Jeff creates and connects locally-based community pages including the “Stay Local” channels and clothing lines. These support outdoor recreation and conservation in areas he has experience working in, such as San Diego, Hawaii and of course, Lake Tahoe. Sharks have survived five global mass extinctions yet, now, many of their species are endangered due to human activities and myths. Cristina Zenato works to reverse this. She is an ocean and cave explorer, shark behaviorist and expert, dive instructor, speaker, writer, and conservationist. She has helped to change the perception of sharks through the close encounters she has with these animals. They often allow her to pet them and even remove hooks from their mouths! Cristina was a vital player in helping to declare the Bahamas as a shark sanctuary when external fisheries were looking to come in and take them from Bahamian waters. She also works all over the world advocating for these often maligned creatures and for the conservation of the waters they live in.We talk about what it's like to, literally, have a shark in your lap, how it's crucial that we know that not all sharks are the same, the dangers sharks are facing, and what would happen to us if they are removed from the ecosystem.ResourcesHer website Her nonprofit, People of the Water If you enjoyed this episode, please be sure to subscribe, rate and review it! This helps to boost its visibility. Healthy Seas is a marine conservation organization whose mission is to tackle the ghost fishing phenomenon and turn this waste into an opportunity for a more circular economy. They do this through clean-ups, prevention, education, and working with partners who recycle and repurpose this material. The podcast is hosted by Crystal DiMiceli.
Cristina Zenato, aka "The Mother of Sharks" joins me on this episode to discuss her fascinating life journey that has led her to the Bahamas where she has befriended and frequently interacts with Caribbean reef sharks. She is a PADI Course Director, NSS-CDS Advanced Cave diving instructor, TDI Technical Instructor and specializes in shark diving and shark behavior. We discuss how she is one of the first in the world to have been able to induce a state of relaxation in the Caribbean Reef sharks through gentle touch. To the observer, this looks like the shark is falling asleep in her lap. Sharks know her and her touch and seem to seek the connection and contact. Witnessing this interaction, directly while diving with Cristina or remotely by watching her numerous contributions to television documentaries and reading about her work in magazines, has created a change in perception from the general public. It has helped dissolve misconceptions and preconceptions about sharks. Cristina and her sharks have become ambassadors for many other species and animals in the world. Through her work, she helps her sharks by removing hooks from their mouths and parasites. She helps scientists collect data to support research and has developed a Caribbean Reef Shark Diver Distinctive Specialty. Cristina is also constantly working on the exploration and record of caves, to determine their location, connection to the surrounding eco-systems and promoting their conservation. Cristina Zenato explains how shark tourism is helping protect sharks in places like the Bahamas and elsewhere. She talks about the benefit and value the sharks bring to the local communities, as well as some of the objections to shark feeding. Cristina directly analyzes the practice of lionfish feeding, and other types of shark feeding for shark tourism. This is a must for anyone who questions the practice of shark diving with food in the water, with an extremely insightful anecdote laden with relatable analogies. This is Part 2 of the complete Cristina Zenato interview with Kenny Dyal. Who knew sharks could be friends? Today will be an exciting episode as we learn more about sharks, marine life, and the role of humans in protecting them. Our guest Cristina Zenato is a Diver, Conservationist, Cave Explorer, and Shark Professional. She has lived in the Bahamas for years now and has been very active in bringing change to people’s views and interaction with the aquatic world for the better. Sharks are very misunderstood creatures, Cristina says. Listen to this episode of the Fire In The Belly Podcast as she shares more about her ‘friends’, her advocacy, some personal stories, and her career journey! KEY TAKEAWAYS Activate your ‘Do not disturb’ mode. Sometimes, we have to be wary about what we let in and out of our system. Maybe keeping a distance from external influences (e.g. social media) from time to time will help you focus on things that matter to you. She remembers how difficult it was for a female like her to grow up in Italy. Decades ago, people still thought that women’s existence was just for fertility, beauty, and men. Though she didn’t let it stop her from pursuing a degree and appreciate continuous learning. Protect oceans, sharks, and caves. This is Cristina’s lifelong advocacy. Together with her non-profit organisation People of the Water, they bring awareness to how people should treat the aquatic world and other environmental issues. It isn’t easy to get people jumping in your cause instantly. Cristina has seen advocates and activists get aggressive when they present their ideals. Acting like you have the moral high ground will not help you and your advocacies. Showing them how beneficial it is to them and the world will. You can start by sharing how your own little actions made positive results. “Sharks are the most innocent creatures I’ve ever met in my life.” – Cristina Zenato Cristina dedicated most of her life to studying sharks. Not just reading on textbooks, but actually swimming, observing, and even petting them. Sharks are large carnivorous animals so it’s just normal that people get terrified. But there is more that we can learn and do to also help in shark conservation. Cristina wants you to learn more about the true image of these creatures because they are significantly misunderstood. Our obligation as humans is not to disturb the marine ecosystem and make the oceans habitable for them and other creatures. This is what Cristina is most passionate about. BEST MOMENTS “I have created a life that which every day I call an expedition.” “There are no monsters under the sea; they are just what you make up in your head.” “When you love someone, you don’t want them to suffer.” “I keep absorbing, and I keep learning.” “Focus on your passion.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Know more about Cristina Zenato. Cristina is one of the first in the world to have been able to induce a state of relaxation in the Caribbean Reef sharks through gentle touch. Cristina was the initiator of the movement that resulted in the full protection of sharks in the entire Bahamas. For More On Cristina: https://cristinazenato.com/ For More On Us: FreedomPact.co.uk

I was fortunate enough to talk with Cristina Zenato, an underwater cave explorer and shark enthusiast. Just over 25 years ago Cristina traveled to the Bahamas to learn how to scuba dive and soon made it her home. Cristina is a passionate cave explorer and trained diver as she has surveyed dozens of cave systems in the Bahamas. When Cristina isn't diving in underwater caves, she works with wild sharks. Specializing in shark diving and shark behavior Cristina is one of the ONLY known individuals that can induce a state of relaxation in the Caribbean reef shark. Cristina has an enormous heart and has dedicated much of her life to the well-being of the ocean. You guys HAVE to check out her website -------> cristinazenato.com
In this episode, brought to you by XDEEP with the support of the patrons of Speaking Sidemount, I catch up with British cave diver and instructor Robert Thomas. Robert has had an extraordinary beginning to his dive career, first diving at the age of 6... Joining the ranks of certified divers at the tender age of 10 before starting to cave dive in his teens. At 18 as soon as he was old enough he joined the ranks of the famed British Cave Diving Group and a year later he qualified as a full member. He's now the secretary for the Somerset Section of the CDG and when he not diving or teaching diving, he's dry caving in the caves of the UK. Robert has progressed under the expert tutelage of his Dad, Michael Thomas and in Robert's words... has also been passed around to learn and develop with many other great divers and instructors including my guest in Ep# 33, cave explorer and shark conservationist... Cristina Zenato. As you'll hear in this episode, there's an old head on those young shoulders and you can feel and hear the depth of thought and also training that has gone into his diving to date. It was interesting to get Robert's perspective as a young diver and instructor on the state of diving and training and where he sees things going in the future. I also take a moment to ask him about some of his recent videos on British Cave diving techniques, how these differ from what you'll see in other parts of the world, how dry caving helps cave diving, and we discuss his sidemount set up before reminiscing about our dives in Gozo Malta. Cristina Zenato has dedicated her life to the protection and conservation of Caribbean Reef Sharks. From her home in the Bahamas, she has spent over 25 years interacting and learning about these amazing animals, to the point where she has real relationships with individual sharks demonstrated by their interactions with her in the water. Cristina is world renown for her work with Sharks but she is also a Sidemount and Cave Instructor and a dedicated explorer of the caves of the Bahamas. In this week's episode we meet and talk about Cristina's work with Sharks, we share our perspectives on why they are so misunderstood, about what we can do to educate others on sharks, about the issues with and value of shark feeding and shark tourism, and then we talk cave exploration on Grand Bahama Island, about Cristina's use of the KISS Sidewinder CCR, and what I can expect, when I head to Florida to train with Edd Sorenson later this year...
