Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to react to the passing of legendary Penguins broadcaster Mike Lange late Wednesday night at the age of 76. What legacy does he leave the team, NHL and hockey community at large? What are some of Jason's best memories of getting to know Mike on a personal level over the years? What were some of his best moments on the mic? And why is he every bit a piece of franchise lore alongside on-ice heroes like Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin? Our duo tackles those poignant questions, then dives into some hockey talk about the U.S. vs. Canada championship match of the Four Nations Face-off. Can Penguins coach Mike Sullivan and his American team recreate their defensive magic from the first matchup over the weekend. Will there be more booing and fisticuffs? And has this tournament reminded the right people that Crosby remains every bit the face of hockey and Team Canada that Connor McDavid is? Then later, Adam and Jason ponder Penn State's College Football Playoff chances next season following Jason's column on the topic. Are the returns of Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen and Dani Dennis-Sutton enough to make this program a dominant force? Or will it need transfer additions at wide receiver like Devonte Ross and Kyron Hudson to make an impact to take a step forward from a crushing loss to Notre Dame in the CFP semifinals at the Orange Bowl last month? In the third segment, airing on the PG's new Pirates-focused channel, the topic is payrolls disparity in MLB and the need for a salary cap to even things out. Are tight spenders like the Pirates' Bob Nutting or free spending teams like the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets the sport's biggest problem? How much should revenue sharing be part of the conversation around payroll? And how much would transparency in these matters help quell fans' angst? Adam and Jason try to answer those questions, then weigh in on some baseball topics, including the first base situation amid Spencer Horwitz's injury. Is Nick Yorke a good fit as a replacement? Why is it the right move to keep Bryan Reynolds in the outfield? And what impact can Tommy Pham have on the clubhouse culture, starting with his relationship with Oneil Cruz?
Audrey Snyder and Jon Sauber react to Penn State making a splash hire and bringing on Jim Knowles as defensive coordinator. Tune in for thoughts on big a hire this is for the program, what it means for the 2025 Nittany Lions and how James Franklin made the biggest offseason move to date. Plus, with the return of Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen, Dani Dennis-Sutton, Zane Durant and more is 2025 a make or break year for Penn State? Learn more about your ad choices. On a special edition of their Penn State football podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette/Daily College Nittany Lions insider Joel Haas react to reports that the program is hiring Ohio State DC Jim Knowles to the same position with a record-breaking coordinator contract. Does the bombshell move signal an all-in mentality from coach James Franklin's program heading into 2025? Could Penn State attract any elite talent -- such as star safety Caleb Downs -- away from the coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes via the transfer portal? How much did the return of stars like Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen, Zane Durant, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zakee Wheatley influence the move? What does the big contract say about how invested Penn State's top donors are in breaking through at the national level? What level of impact did Penn State's College Football Playoff breakthrough have on the situation? And how much will familiarity with Ohio State and Oregon help the Lions in their pursuit of a national championship? Our duo tackles those questions and more.
On their Penn State football podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette/Daily Collegian Nittany Lions insider Joel Haas react to a busy week of personnel moves following the College Football Playoff loss to Notre Dame at the Orange Bowl. Will coach James Franklin miss Tom Allen as DC after his move to join Dabo Swinney at Clemson? Or are Anthony Poindexter, Dan Connor, Al Golden and D'Anton Lynn attractive possible alternatives? What about Harrison "Trey" Wallace and Omari Evans at receiver? Will their transfer portal departures hurt? Or could they be addition by subtraction after their no-show efforts in Miami? And can transfers Kyron Hudson from USC and Devonte Ross from Troy step into those roles capably? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders NFL draft decisions. Does Penn State have the depth to stay elite despite the loss of names like Tyler Warren, Abdul Carter and Kobe King? To what degree can names like Dani Dennis-Sutton and Luke Reynolds step up behind them? And how encouraging are the returns of Dennis-Sutton, Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen and Zane Durant for Penn State's NIL program?
Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern with a focus on Steelers coach Mike Tomlin's season-ending news conference following an NFL playoffs loss to the Baltimore Ravens. What should we make of Tomlin demurring on the question of whether WR George Pickens was late for the game against Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas? What should be done with Pickens moving forward? And how realistic would it be for Jets WR Davante Adams to join this team after saying he would "100%" like to play for Tomlin in Pittsburgh. Later, Paul also gets in QB talk. How much should we believe Tomlin's comments about them, given his enthusiastic support for Kenny Pickett last year before the trade that sent him to Philadelphia? Is Justin Fields a legitimate candidate to start in 2025? Is he the better option than bringing back Russell Wilson? Or is GM Omar Khan better off looking to trade, free agency or NFL draft options like Sam Darnold, Aaron Rodgers? Then later, Paul ponders how dangerous Penn State could be be as a College Football Playoff contender next season amid the announced returns of stars Drew Allar, Kaytron Allen, Nick Singleton and Dani Dennis-Sutton?

Audrey & Jon share their thoughts on Penn State's win against Boise State in the 2024 Fiesta Bowl by the score of 31-14. The Nittany Lions jumped out with the early lead on stellar play from the offense led by Drew Allar, Tyler Warren and Omari Evans touchdowns. The defense stifled Ashton Jeanty and Amin Vanover, Dvon J-Thomas, Zakee Wheatley and Dani Dennis-Sutton all stepped up in the absence of Abdul Carter who was out due to injury. Late it was Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton who took over behind a stout offensive line. The victory James Franklin is his second straight over a top 10 opponent as the Nittany Lions get their 13th win of the season. Joel Haas and Lyle Alenstein react to Penn State's win over Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl, which secured a spot for the Nittany Lions in the Orange Bowl and College Football Playoff semifinals against either Notre Dame or Georgia. Was the game too close for comfort with likely tougher challenges awaiting? How far can running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton carry this team after another dominant performance on the ground? What about the Drew Allar and Tyler Warren passing connection that resulted in a pair of scores against the Broncos? What's the latest on Abdul Carter and Dani Dennis-Sutton, who both left the game with injuries? What does this win do for coach James Franklin's legacy? And should OC Andy Kotelnicki change up his play calling after going away from the running game while it was working? Our duo tackles those topics and more.
The Nittany Lions have arrived in the desert as they prepare for their matchup with the Broncos of Boise State. James Franklin leads a team that is still riding high after a dominant performance against SMU in the first round of the playoff into their next game with a path to the semifinals on the line. How will Penn State prepare to slow down the top running back in college football in Ashton Jeanty? What did the defensive line have to say about the job they have ahead of them and how does the offense matchup with the Boise D? Can Drew Allar go off against their passing defense or will Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen continue their late season big game trend? Plus, can Boise slow down Abdul Carter or Dani Dennis-Sutton how will Jaylen Reed be lined up. It was a day for the defense as Dominic DeLuca had two interceptions, including a pick six, and Tony Rojas had one that went for another pick six as the Nittany Lions stifled the SMU offense to earn a place in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. Abdul Carter threw in numerous pressures and a sack as well as Dani Dennis-Sutton who helped terrorize Kevin Jennings in a huge win for James Franklin. Penn State's offense struggled early but took over on the ground as Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen both averaged nearly seven yards per carry. Drew Allar could not find his receivers but made plays with his legs to help the cause as the Nittany Lions had a comfortable lead at the half. Join us live or check out the replay on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel, here on the site, or in your favorite podcast app. Penn State vs. Kent State recap The game started much like the season for Kent State, which is to say a total disaster. Starting quarterback Devin Kargman to a nasty hit from Penn State's defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton and had to leave the game on a stretcher after the second play of the game with a leg injury. However, it was a slow start to the game. The Penn State offense put together several long drives, but one ended with a Beau Pribula interception in the red zone on a screen. The second ended with a Tyler Warren touchdown and the Nittany Lions took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter. However, the team built up steam throughout the second quarter, and finished at a blistering pace. Quarterback Drew Allar began to attack downfield and the team scored twice within two minutes before halftime. After halftime, Allar tossed a 59-yard touchdown to Omari Evans to end the day for the starting offense. Allar compiled 309 yards and three touchdowns before heading to the bench. Defense smothers Kent StateThe Penn State defense made the game a literal non-contest after it began the day as a virtual non-contest. After knocking Kragman out of the game, backup quarterback JD Sherrod had to leave with a lower-body injury. The defense played multiple depth players throughout the contest, even early. Despite that, they allowed only 62 yards through three and a half quarters. We'll highlight some notable players and young talent that stood out in the game. Audrey & Jon are back to talk about the aftermath of the win over West Virginia and the newfound hype for this Nittany Lion team. Will Penn State be unbeaten when they head to USC in October? How will James Franklin keep the team focused on 1-0 now that the team is back in Beaver Stadium? Is Andy Kotelnicki the most popular coordinator in college football after week one? Plus, a preview of the game against Bowling Green and what we expect from Drew Allar, Trey Wallace, Nick Singleton, Krytron Allen, Tyler Warren, Beau Pribula, Abdul Carter, Dani Dennis-Sutton, Jaylen Reed, A.J. Harris, K.J. Winston as well as the usage of Julian Fleming in his first game as a Nittany Lion.
In this WVU football podcast, Couz and Jonathan Martin will preview the upcoming week 1 college football game between the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Penn State Nittany Lions. They will look at three keys to the game for the Mountaineers, two position battles to watch, one key player to watch and then will give their score predictions at the end. Penn State travels to Morgantown, West Virginia on August 31 to take on WVU. Both teams are opening up the 2024 college football season with this game. The Nittany Lions are eight point favorites upon the recording of the show and are ranked in the top 10 in nearly every preseason poll. Most pundits also have them making the College Football Playoff at the end of the season. The Nittany Lions are led by quarterback Drew Allar and a very talented running back tandem of Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton. The two backs combined to eclipse the 1,600 yard mark in 2023. They do have question marks at the wide receiver position and replace three starting offensive linemen. There are fewer question marks on the PSU defense. They have NFL talent everywhere, led by defensive end/linebacker Abdul Carter. His speed makes him a matchup nightmare coming off the edge or up the middle. They also have star safety KJ Winston who led the team with 61 tackles last season, and defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton. The speedy quarterback Garrett Greene will lead the Mountaineer offense into the game. He is also flanked by a talented pair of running backs in C.J. Donaldson and Jahiem White. The trio ran for over 2,000 yards in 2023. Greene also threw for over 2,000 yards with only four interceptions. The Mountaineer defense is led by safety Aubrey Burks and defensive end Sean Martin. The two seniors will look to improve this WVU defense that had its share of struggles last season. WVU will rely on several transfers in the secondary, including Garnett Hollis who came over from Northwestern via the transfer portal. Will the Mountaineer fans will their team to victory, or will the talent of Penn State be too much for West Virginia to overcome? Jonathan and Couz answer those questions in the episode. #wvufootball #wvu #pennstatefootball

Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK Check out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilD Last Friday, the college football landscape felt the first tremors of the next big shift in how the sport will be run in the future. The SEC and the Big Ten announced they were creating a special advisory committee to help oversee the future of the sport. Many viewed this as the beginning of the end for the NCAA. Penn State football finds itself on the ship headed toward the future. But what does that future look like? On today's BWI Live Show, we discuss how a new power structure will emerge and what factors matter on the way to it. Senior Editor Nate Bauer joins the show to lend his experienced eye to the situation. We'll also discuss the team's defensive end situation outside of Dani Dennis-Sutton. Who will step up and play in that secondary pass-rushing role? Find out that, plus hear the BWI Mailbag that ends the show! If you haven't yet, subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you don't miss our live shows, programmed videos, and breaking news. As always, you can check out the replay on the channel or embed it in the BWI Live articles. The future of College football We spend the first third of today's show discussing how college football has been masquerading as something different than the NFL, its professional counterpart. Bauer lists why he thinks the changes that will take place in the sport over the next several years will finally unmask the sport for what it has been for years. Where does Penn State fit into this? Will the Big Ten change its model of team acquisition and start shedding less viable programs? According to Bauer, it's all on the table. Penn State defensive end room Another significant change for Penn State this upcoming year is at defensive end. While Dani Dennis-Sutton will likely step into the starring role after two seasons building to this moment, the other position remains unclaimed. Defensive ends Amin Vanover and Zuriah Fisher are the veterans who have the inside track to the spot, but who else factors in? Will Abdul Carter see a meaningful change in his usage? Or Will sophomore Jameial Lyons fall in Dennis-Suttons' footsteps. We discuss those ideas and the other variables that will present themselves in spring football. BWI Mailbag As always, the second half of the show is reserved for you. We take fan questions from the Blue White Illustrated message board and from the live chat during the show. While the team is toiling away in the player-development side of the program, the staff is busy hosting future prospects for junior days in January. On today's BWI Live Show, we'll review the latest out of the first junior day, and take your questions from the BWI Mailbag. We'll also discuss a key element of the Penn State defense for next fall. Is former five-star defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton ready to take his star turn at the position? Blue White Illustrated senior reporter Nate Bauer talked with Dennis-Sutton last month and shares what he learned from that conversation. You can check out the replay of the live show on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel, or here embedded in this article. Penn State Junior Day Penn State's first junior day is a success for no other reason than the staff secured a commitment from three-star offensive lineman Owen Aliciene. Recruiting insider Sean Fitz will discuss the early returns from Aliciene, and the overall impressions from the weekend. Dani Dennis-Sutton discusses path towards elite play Check out Bauer's complete article, detailing what he learned from Dennis-Sutton during the runup to the Peach Bowl. Here's an excerpt from their conversation. “I learned that you've got to be consistent,” said Dennis-Sutton last month. “Chop is consistent at beating his man. You don't see many times if at all in a game where Chop is losing any of his reps. He's winning consistently and that's why he's going to be a first-round draft pick.” BWI Mailbag This week, we've got a full mailbag from members of the Blue White Illustrated message board. We'll discuss which player has the best chance of joining the presumed top-line players in the room. We'll also dig into the usage of six offensive linemen by team in the NFL and the NCAA and how that sub-package is growing in popularity. But that's just scratching the surface. It's the final home game of the 2023 season and the last chance for Penn State to play well in front of its fans. We're looking at the five things that will help get the team, especially the offense, back on track against their opponent this weekend. The BWI Live Show will tackle the team's biggest issues, including the inconsistent passing game, maximizing the team's advantages in the trenches against Rutgers, and cracking another tough coverage scheme. We'll also look at two factors that will affect the game for the Penn State defense, including Rutgers running back Kyle Monangai. Penn State run defense on third down If there's been one consistent and alarming flaw in the Penn State defense, it's the third and long run defense. The team's Prowler Package has been susceptible to giving up third downs on the ground in obvious passing situations. We'll discuss how this is a problem and not what you think when you examine the full information set. We'll explain how defensive coordinator Manny Diaz is taking a risk with Chop Robinson, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Adisa Isaac on the field simultaneously. Next, we'll look at the Penn State passing attack, and how it might get out of the mud it's been wallowing in for most of the season. While it won't be eclectic, there are some efficiency changes for this game, and the rest of the year that it can make to take advantage of situations, formations, and schemes. We'll discuss how Penn State can take the pressure off of Drew Allar and how they can attack the Rutgers linebackers. Finally, we'll discuss how the team can run at Rutgers to maximize its chances of getting positive runs with Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton. Penn Stated: Talking Penn State Football with Donnie Collins
For sure, there was plenty to talk about after last Saturday's Blue-White Game at Beaver Stadium.Omari Evans and Kaden Saunders may have cooled some of the doubt about the readiness of Penn State's second batch of receivers. For backup defensive ends, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zuriah Fisher sure did look like gamebreakers. For true freshmen who would normally still be in high school, Tony Rojas and Ta'Mere Robinson sure did look like potential stars at linebacker. KJ Winston might be a stud at safety. The defense potentially looks dominant, even if the kicking specialists left a bit to be desired. But with special guest Cory Giger of DK Pittsburgh Sports on as his special guest this week, of course Penn Stated host Donnie Collins is going to put the focus back on the quarterback position and the performance of sophomore Drew Allar in what, in all reality, was his first career game as the Nittany Lions' starting quarterback.Donnie and Cory went in-depth on the receiver battle and made themselves GMs while discussing their view on what positions Penn State coaches should look to bolster through the transfer portal this summer.Still, most of the talk centered on Allar, who threw for more than 200 yards in the game, with just one touchdown, and had to battle a hard-charging defense throughout the overcast afternoon. Is he ready to help Penn State contend for a Big Ten East title sooner rather than later? And, how important is he for a program that wants to get itself on an accelerated national title pace?Plus, Donnie and Cory give their opinions on realistic timelines for the Nittany Lions to win a national championship. It was a wet, sloppy game for Penn State football, who defeated the Northwestern Wildcats 17-7 despite turning the ball over five times. Join film analyst Thomas Frank Carr as he discusses what happened during Penn State's rain-soaked matchup and discuss the major storylines coming out of the game. T-Frank will also take questions from fans who join him live on YouTube. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss the postgame show. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK The Penn State defense came to play, limiting the Wildcats to less than 300 yards of offense while forcing three turnovers of its own. At times, the Nittany Lion's defense struggled with two penalties by freshman defenders Dani Dennis-Sutton and Abdul Carter that extended a drive for the Wildcats that nearly ended in a touchdown. Despite that, the Lions held firm on a fourth-down quarterback sneak from the one-yard line. Once again, the star of the game for the Penn State offense was freshman running back Kaytron Allen. Despite not playing in the first half, Allen nearly ended the game as the team's leading rusher. The reason was that fellow freshman Nick Singleton lost two fumbles and a third that was called off for a stop in forward momentum. However, Allen fumbled late in the fourth quarter that gave Northwestern life again. Penn State heads into the bye week 5-0. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Hear the final word on Penn State's 33-14 victory over Central Michigan on the BWI Daily Edition. The BWI Daily is live every Monday at 8 pm to discuss the previous game and take your questions! Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Baur sit down for a conversation about where Penn State stands one month into the season after a frustrating offensive performance against a MAC opponent. Penn State turned the ball over three times on defense and picked up a muffed punt but didn't manage to pull away from Central Michigan until the fourth quarter. T-Frank and Bauer will discuss their impression of the game and what happened to keep Penn State from running away with the game. But it wasn't all bad. Bauer and T-Frank will discuss freshman Kaytron Allen's performance, gaining 111 yards on only 13 carries and breaking seven tackles along the way. They'll also discuss the state of the Penn State running back room one month into the season. Defensively, Penn State stymied Central Michigan and, once again, batted away over ten passes. They'll discuss the standout players and progress that the Nittany Lions have made since week one. T-Frank will highlight freshman Dani Dennis-Sutton's progression and why he thinks that the five-star defensive end deserves to see more playing time during meaningful game action. Lastly, they'll discuss the special teams situation and the duality of what's going on with Penn State's third unit. They'll highlight the punting prowess of Barney Amor and the field goal kicking concerns that Penn Sate faces this year. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Penn State's running back revolution | Central Michigan Recap | #WeAre Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State held an open practice on Saturday and as always, Blue White Illustrated was there to give you insights into which players are standing out and which groups are making progress through the summer. Today, host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer focus on the offensive and defensive lines to give Nittany Lion fans a snippet of practice. They discuss the pass-rushing drills both T-Frank and Bauer watched on Saturday. It was a longer session than normal for the media, so the pair took in one-on-one drills with the offensive and defensive line. A battle between Dani Dennis-Sutton and Drew Shelton was the highlight for Bauer, while T-Frank paid attention to left tackle Olu Fashanu's performance. Next, T-Frank and Bauer discuss Maryland transfer Demeioun "Chop" Robinson and his progress through camp. T-Frank got a chance to watch him work in drills and has a verdict on whether or not he'll be a major factor to begin the season at Purdue. Bauer backs up what T-Frank saw with some of his insight into the situation. Finally, Bauer throws out several other names, like freshman linebacker Abdul Carter that stood out to him in practice. T-Frank does the same. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Penn State football is now through two weeks of training camp, and players are starting to generate real buzz heading into the beginning of the 2022 season. The good news for Penn State fans is that the five-star freshmen, quarterback Drew Allar, running back Nick Singleton, and defensive end Dani-Dennis-Sutton are among that group. Penn State insider Nate Bauer joins host Thomas Frank Carr to discuss which players have gotten the staff's attention. They start the show with quarterback Drew Allar. Bauer tells T-Frank what information he's gathered from his sources about the young signal caller and how he's performed after a summer studying the playbook. T-Frank and Bauer then call back to the spring where Allar was behind the group to illustrate this significant change. Next, they continue the conversation from last week about cornerback Johnny Dixon. The former South Carolina transfer has continued to take steps forward. How does that change the topography of the cornerback room? Bauer and T-Frank discuss the wealth of talent at cornerback and how that can help Penn State. The last group of players they discuss is the freshmen running backs. Just how good have Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen been? Bauer gathers what he knows and presents it to the audience. T-Frank then shifts gears to discuss the news from the weekend that former four-star running back Caziah Holmes is no longer on the roster for Penn State football. T-Frank points to a critical date that probably crystallized the picture for the Nittany Lions. Finally, Bauer gives his thoughts on the situation. The last piece of news the duo discusses on the show is the breaking development this morning where three-star defensive end Ken Talley entered his name into the transfer portal after just two weeks on campus. While there isn't much known about the situation, Bauer and T-Frank detail the rocky road that got Talley on campus this summer. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Penn State football is counting on several familiar faces returning from injury to power its defensive line for the 2022 season. But, with the addition of some exciting new faces, will this group hit the heights of their potential? Or will there be too many 'ifs' for this group to succeed? The BWI Daily edition tackles the Penn State defensive line in today's season preview. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Baur start at the top with Penn State's need to replace second-round pick Arnold Ebiketie's production from last season. Additionally, senior defensive tackle PJ Mustipher is returning from injury. His timeline back to full strength is a key part of the equation. They discuss how likely it is that Mustipher and defensive end Adisa Isaac will play well this fall. Next, T-Frank introduces viewers to the starting defensive line, with even more questions outside of Isaac and Mustipher. Nick Tarburton returns to his role from last season, while Hakeem Beamon returns from a non-injury absence in 2021. Next, T-Frank introduces the rest of the depth players and the new faces to the defensive line this fall. He asks Bauer how long it will take for Penn State's starting defensive line to change from what it is now. Through that conversation, Bauer and T-Frank bring attention to Penn State's depth players, such as Coziah Izzard and Dvon Ellies. Those to players struggled to fill in for Mustipher last season. Finally, the duo considers if things can lead to a more positive outcome this fall. Finally, they dive into the new players for Penn State. Five-star defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton, transfer Chop Robinson, and freshman defensive tackle Zane Durant have impressed this offseason in one form or fashion. T-Frank and Bauer discuss the possibility of all of them playing meaningful roles in the fall. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Each week the BWI Daily Edition takes your questions and answers them on air. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior Editor Nate Bauer team up to discuss the thoughts and opinions of Blue White Illustrated subscribers and Penn State fans. Today they'll tackle Big Ten Media Day, the return of PJ Mustipher, and more. T-Frank and Bauer start with a discussion about the Penn State defensive line. A BWI Message board member wants to know the projected two-deep at the defensive line for the fall. Does the news that Mustipher is cleared for camp change their opinion? The duo discusses the pros and cons of returning from an ACL injury, how players perform when they do and what fans should expect from the senior defensive tackle early in the year. Next, they take a question regarding the 2022 Big Ten Media Days and Penn State's performance. Was Penn State successful in weathering the storm of controversy brought earlier in the week? Did head coach James Franklin and his players achieve their goals? T-Frank found himself disappointed in the responses, but Bauer has some different context to bring to the show. They answer questions regarding the defensive end position, and the competition at guard between Sal Wormley and Hunter Nourzad, among others. Finally, the show ends by picking the freshmen in the Class of 2022 that will become fan favorites. Bauer chooses five-star players, Nick Singleton and Drew Allar, while T-Frank picks five-star defensive end Dani Dennis Sutton and receiver Kaden Saunders. Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State senior editor Nate Bauer and film analyst Thomas Frank Carr are back for their weekly mailbag show on the BWI Daily Edition. They discuss several topics, including how complex or straightforward new defensive coordiantor Manny Diaz's scheme is. They also field questions about the Class of 2022 and 2023, including which players, like freshman Kaden Saunders, could play early. They start the show with news and notes about the Penn State football team Nate Bauer gathered this week. Then, he gives some broad details about what he learned and directs listeners to check out his articles, which you can find below. From there, they get into the mailbag to discover what Penn State fans want to know on the second-to-last Thursday in June. The first question deals with the Nittany Lion's first game of the season against Purdue. The line sits at -3 entering the game, and one BWI member wants to know if that's too low or if Penn State is that bad? Bauer and T-Frank see it differently but go into the factors keeping Penn State and Purdue within a field goal. After a discussion about basketball recruiting, they switch to the topic of defensive ends. One viewer asks Bauer and T-Frank if new commit TJ Parker and five-star defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton have a higher floor than current starter Nick Tarburton. T-Frank describes the similarities between all three players and then gets into one quirk that both Dennis-Sutton and Parker share. Manny Diaz is bringing a new scheme to Penn State, and the Nittany Lions seem to be in a good position with two top-150 linebacker recruits who plan on making their college decisions shortly. So, a viewer writes to ask, which scheme is easier to pick up for a player transitioning to linebacker, Diaz, or former DC Brent Pry? T-Frank clarifies some points about what position four-star prospects Ta'Mere Robinson and Tony Rojas play before asking Bauer to take the question. Bauer recently interviewed Diaz for BWI, and he got a first-hand account of the nature of his scheme. Bauer relates what Diaz told him and then asks T-Frank to add context to what he's relaying. Then, T-Frank and Bauer discuss what that means for the players in the system. The next viewer asks if Penn State will have a reliable deep threat in 2022. If so, is freshman Kaden Saunders that guy? What about fellow newcomer Omari Evans? T-Frank and Bauer discuss the viable deep threat options in the offense and give their verdict. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Penn State's five-star defensive end in the Class of 2022, Dani Dennis-Sutton, isn't on campus yet, but he's acting like it. He joins the BWI Daily Edition to talk to host Thomas Frank Carr about his game, life, and journey to becoming a Nittany Lion. He also discusses what he's doing to prepare himself for next season in today's episode. T-Frank starts by diving right into the question fans want to know most. Will Dennis-Sutton be ready to compete early in his career? This offseason, Penn State head coach James Franklin said as much when talking about the 6-5 McDonough high school star during National Signing Day. How did that make Dennis-Sutton feel? He and T-Frank discuss that, and then Dennis-Sutton shifts the focus to the entire class. Finally, T-Frank asks him what his goals are for the fall. Next, T-Frank asks Dennis-Sutton about his on-field skills, which are impressive. But it's not just the physical tools that the 255-pound pass rusher brings to the table; he's also adept at the technical aspects of his position. So, T-Frank asks him how he was keyed into their importance so early in his development. Finally, Dennis-Sutton talked about his journey to become the player he is today. Part of that journey involves the COVID-19 Pandemic. So how was losing a season of football beneficial for Dennis-Sutton? T-Frank asks him what happened and what he learned about himself through that trial. He also explains how one of the side effects of the pandemic was to spark what has become a life-long passion for Dennis-Sutton. They then transition back to talking about Dennis-Sutton's game, specifically his pass-rushing moves. After discussing which ones he thinks are his signature moves, they talk about former Penn State pass-rushers with similar skills. Dennis-Sutton has already signed his letter of intent, but T-Frank asks him what made him sure he wanted to play at Penn State. The high school senior gave a thoughtful answer and explained Penn State's "culture" means to him. Next, they talk about what Dennis-Sutton is doing this spring, and his list of activities is staggering. From track to lifting to working on Penn State's playbook, Dennis-Sutton is busy getting himself ready for life at Penn State. Finally, T-Frank asks the Mcdonough senior about his former teammate, defensive end Mason Robinson. Robinson is unranked by On3 but holds offers from Penn State, Virginia Tech, Pitt, and South Carolina, among others. Finally, they discuss Dennis-Sutton's hobbies and interests off the field. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State football got bad news this week from the transfer portal. Three of their top defensive end targets, Gabriel and Grayson Murphy of North Texas and Jordan Domineck of Gerogia Tech elected to go elsewhere. The twin pass rushers form North Texas chose UCLA as their transfer destination, while Domineck picked Arkansas over Penn State. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, breaks down the sting factor of each decision, then explains what else is out there. After that, he looks at the roster to try and find solutions to the Nittany Lion's problem at d-end. First, T-Frank discusses why Domineck isn't a massive loss for Penn State. He doesn't think that the one-time Yellowjacket was a great fit given Penn State's need at the position and Domineck's skillset. However, Domineck is an excellent example of the type of players left in the portal that Penn State has to choose from, so he dives into the numbers and shares what he knows about the senior defensive end. After wrapping up his thoughts on Domineck, T-Frank explains why the Murphy twins are the more considerable loss. He explains the confusion about their positional fit and why he thought they were more fit for Penn State, given the talent already on the roster. He points out critical metrics in the profile from PFF and how they could have helped fill a void. Next, T-Frank describes the game of TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis. The rising senior took a step back last season as Domineck did. But just like the Georiga Tech pass rusher, there's an explanation. First, he dives into the stable and unstable metrics of Mathis' data from PFF and then provides context with his film observations. Penn State is looking for a defensive end in the portal because of a deficiency of one key element in the room. The Nittany Lions aren't lacking quality talent, and T-Frank goes through the roster of players and how they can help the team. He explains why Adisa Isaac is so important but why he likely can't do it alone. To fix the problem, Penn State has one final solution. That player is freshman Dani Dennis-Sutton. T-Frank explains how he's come around to the idea of the freshman being a major factor next fall, despite his hesitance to place too much pressure on first-year players. The month of March starts tomorrow, which means things open back up for Penn State football shortly. The BWI Live crew of Nate Bauer, Dave Eckert, and Thomas Frank Carr prepare you for spring practice with an in-depth look at the Nittany Lions' roster. However, they start with the highlights of the Class of 2022, Penn State's five-star players. Bauer went through the last ten years of recruiting information to determine how the top quarterbacks, running backs, and defensive ends have performed in their first year. So he shares his findings with the group and extrapolates that to quarterback Drew Allar, running back Nick Singleton, and defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton. Two of those players, Allar and Singleton, are early enrollees at Penn State who are already a part of winter conditioning and will participate in spring practice. So next, the trio gets into their projections and expectations for the spring. To start, each panelist gives a player who wants to see at each position and why. Over the next two weeks, they'll take a look at the entire roster, but they'll start with the offense this week. Next, they'll ask for your questions and then have their weekly prediction competition. This week's topic will be standout players from spring practice. Which Nittany Lion will get the most publicity from his coaches and teammates? Each panelist will give their prediction, and fans will vote on their favorite argument and player. T-Frank will count up the votes and announce a winner at the show's end. Finally, they discuss Penn State basketball's lopsided loss to Nebraska last night at the Bryce Jordan Center. It was a rough senior night, losing 93-70 to the 8-21 Cornhuskers. What went wrong? Penn State has now dropped two of three after needing to win out for postseason hopes. The group will discuss the last game and the season to finish the show. JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-... On Friday, Penn State football got a win on the recruiting trail, adding to the Class of 2023. Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily Edition to tell you about three-star offensive lineman Anthony Donkoh, who committed to the Nittany Lions this week, and how that shapes the class in the future. He and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss the impact of Donkoh, his potential position, and what traits set him apart as a lineman. Snyder details who Penn State beat out for his commitment and some quick highlights about Donkoh off the field. After the breaking news, Snyder and T-Frank discuss the past week in Penn State recruiting, which was full of events inside and outside the organization. They start with Snyder's conversation with Nittany Lion Commit Mathias Barnwell. Next, Snyder details his conversation with "Mega" and how his outlook on where he might play at the next level has changed since he committed. Finally, T-Frank offers some insight about Barnwell's traits and skills that has him excited to watch the future Penn State player during his senior year of high school. From there, the two transition into the other names that have cropped up this week (as of the time or recording) receiving Penn State offers. This week was the final week of the January contract period, so the staff was out on the road investigating their targets. Snyder then mentions that the work is likely not over until the final bell sounds on this open period. Next, they move on to the final rankings for the Class of 2022. On3 finalized their rankings for the upcoming class ahead of the February signing period, so Snyder takes viewers through the names that moved up in the rankings. Dani Dennis-Sutton had a big jump, becoming the highest-rated Penn State's class player. In addition, he highlights several other players moving around in the Top 300, including one Penn State player that had a bigger jump than any other player in the nation. Finally, they get to the list of players arriving in Happy Valley this weekend for the Nittany Lions final junior day. Penn State's coaching staff has stacked this last recruiting day with plenty of high-profile, high-priority talent. Snyder runs down the list, which is heavy with defensive line talent. Then, he singles out some important players and hints at which players he thinks are leaning most towards the Blue and White. The last thing that Snyder and T-Frank discuss is the recruitment of Vega Ioane, an offensive lineman from Washington, in the Class of 2022. Ioane is visiting campus this weekend, and Snyder gives his insight into how important and positive this step is for offensive line coach Phil Trautwein. Learn more about your ad choices. James Franklin's 2022 recruiting class is considered one of the best in the country and the leaders of that group -- Nick Singleton, Drew Allar, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Kaden Saunders -- are considered elite talents. Could this be Penn State's best recruiting class under Franklin? Also on this Blue-White Breakdown podcast, PennLive's Bob Flounders and Daniel Gallen discuss some of Penn State's top young players to watch this offseason with closer looks at Kobe King and Jaylen Reed. Penn State hosted various players over the weekend during its second junior day. Several interesting names were on hand despite lacking a depth of high-end recruits showing up on campus. With that in mind, Greg Pickel of Blue White Illustrated joins the Daily Edition to discuss those that stood out. They start with one of the most important names of the weekend, Cornell offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad. While he's not a prospect in the traditional sense, Penn State is recruiting him hard out of the transfer portal. He visited the Nittany Lions this weekend, and Pickel has his thoughts on the situation. The next player that stood out to Pickel was Georiga native Dee Crayton. Pickel shares some of what the four-star linebacker prospect had to say after his visit. Crayton was impressed by several aspects of the weekend, which should bode well for Penn State. Pickel then points out an interesting part of Crayton's recruitment that will be worth monitoring going forward. The next topic they discuss deals with recruiting, but not junior day. Four-star offensive lineman Jven Williams updated his recruitment, which Pickel details on the show. They also talk about his importance to the in-state recruiting effort and where Penn State might stand in Williams' pecking order of schools. They also explain how On3's RPM, or Recruiting Prediction Machine, works and why the Nittany Lions are a favorite right now. Finally, there are key events that fans should know about that shape the recruiting process, which are a factor in the prediction. The final piece of recruiting news they discuss is Dani Dennis-Sutton's ranking for On3. On3's recruiting expert Charles Power gave Dennis-Sutton his fifth star this week, making it three for Penn State in the Class of 2023. Pickel and T-Frank discuss Dennis-Sutton's senior year and some of the factors that led to his late rise up the rankings. Finally, Pickel fills T-Frank in on the Penn State wrestling team's exploits over the weekend. The Nittany Lions dominated third-ranked Michigan and then took care of business against Michigan State on Sunday, sweeping their road schedule this past weekend. Who stood out? Why did Penn State handle Michigan in such a fashion? First, they discuss those topics and then comment on how dangerous head coach Cael Sanderson's squad is after the intermission. Next, they discuss some critical moments of the weekend and then look at the team with a big-picture view. Lastly, Pickel gives fans a heads up on what's coming up from the team and him this week. Penn State Football has six players participating in two all-star games over the last two weekends. Running back Kaytron Allen and offensive lineman Drew Shelton played for team Icon in the Under Armour Next game in Florida two weekends ago. Receiver Kaden Saunders was a participant in the week of practice, but he was nicked up in practice and was held out of the game. This past Saturday, four future Penn Stater's took part in the All-America Bowl in San Antonio. Quarterback Drew Allar, running back Nick Singleton, defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton, and linebacker Keon Wylie started for the East squad after a week of practice. While the games provide us another opportunity to evaluate and learn about the players participating, they are not events that should dramatically swing perception. With that in mind, we'll take a look at the film for several of the players and give you evaluations on each player's performance in their respective games. Four future Penn State football players are down in San Antonio for the All-America Bowl all-star game. Five-star quarterback Drew Allar, five-star running back Nick Singleton, four-star defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton, and four-star linebacker Keon Wylie are in attendance, representing Penn State's Class of 2022. Representing Blue White Illustrated; recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the show to discuss what he's seen this week. Snyder has been at practice this week and joins the BWI Daily Edition to give his insights into practice, his interviews with the players, and who has stood out. They start by talking about what players already committed to universities, like Penn State's representatives, gain from an event like the All-America Bowl. Then, Snyder gives his thoughts about what makes this week of competition valuable to the individuals and how it can help them as players. From there, they discuss quarterback Drew Allar's week on center stage. As with most camps, quarterbacks have the most performance chances, and Allar has been a standout. So how good has he been? First, Snyder gives a glowing review of his skills and then shares his conversations with Allar about what the week has been like for him. Next, they focus Dennis-Sutton, who has also been a name on evaluators' lips this week. He shares what his colleagues in San Antonio have said about Dennis-Sutton and adds his own thoughts. Next Sndyer and T-Frank disucss the possiblity of Dennis-Sutton being available for the Penn State defense early in his career. Snyder asked the senior defensive end that question and shares Dennis-Sutton's answer. Another player who contributes early for Penn State is running back Nick Singleton. Unlike Allar and Dennis-Sutton, tailbacks have a more challenging time standing out in walkthroughs. Has Singleton broken that mold? Snyder shares his thoughts about Singleton and his profile as a freshman contributor once he gets to Penn State. Finally, they discuss linebacker Keon Wylie. Like Singleton, linebackers have a tough time standing out in a primarily 7-on-7 environment, so Snyder says less about the Imhotep graduate. Despite that, he's the leading player that Synder is looking forward to watching during the game on Saturday because he'll exclusively be playing linebacker for the first time in his career. They wrap up with the schedule for the rest of the week and some final thoughts on this weekend's event. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State football signed a 23-person class during the first day of the early signing period on Wednesday. There are still plenty of areas to dissect and discuss, and today, host Thomas Frank Carr takes a look at the receivers. There's one commonality among the four receivers that Penn State added to its roster in four-stars Kaden Saunders and Anthony Ivey, along with three-star prospects Omari Evans and Tyler Johnson; size. None of the players in this quartet stand above six feet tall, and none project as dominant, boundary receivers. T-Frank looks at the previous two receiving classes for Penn State to show just how stark of contrast this class is with the others. Was that by choice? Or was it a product of circumstance? T-Frank asked receivers coach Tayler Stubblefield about that very topic yesterday and shares Stubblefield's response. Stubblefield provides T-Frank with an interesting lead to examine how the receiver's position has changed over time both at the college football and NFL level. T-Frank looks at the past several first rounds in the NFL Draft to show what Stubblefield is saying. After that, he wraps up by looking ahead to what Ivey and Saunders bring to the table as the most college-ready prospects in the group this year. They have a similar, desirable skillset but lack one key element that they will have to make up for somehow. Without a player possessing dominant size, this group will have to be everything they seem to be for Penn State's offense to succeed. Finally, T-Frank interviews the Director of Scouting and Ranking for On3, Charles Power. Power and T-Frank discuss the Penn State recruiting class in whole and part during the 15-minute taped interview from earlier this week. They start with a broad view of the class, of which Power has a very favorable opinion. He also highly praises several individual players, including Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, and Dani Dennis-Sutton. After discussing the class stars, T-Frank asks for some less-known players that Power thinks have a chance to overplay their rankings. They wrap up by discussing the future of On3 recruiting, RPM.
