As a photographer David's eyes are his livelihood. His vision was everything, but somehow David shrugs it off, he takes it stoically, he has this lack of concern for any roadblocks. I mean David has always believed that he would achieve great things. I think that's why after traveling around the world to 13 countries at 18, he decided to try and make it as a commercial photographer. He started taking classes at New York's Parsons School of design, and subsequently tried to make it in the biz, but just faced rejection after rejection. However, obstacles are no match for David… he'd eventually strike out on his own as an artist selling his art to Elton John at one of his first shows. Now he has ten published photobooks, sells his artwork all over the world, and it's a coveted thing to own a “Drebin”. THis interview is wide ranging and we'll start with a little steaminess…

"In art, as in life, everything changes and everything ends. Yet, the moments between are what truly count." - David Drebin Art, technology, and the human condition – the kaleidoscope through which we view our lives – can turn unexpectedly to offer fresh patterns of insight. My recent dialogue with renowned artist David Drebin yielded such transformative observations. Our dynamic exchange revealed timeless wisdom wrapped within the threads of contemporary life, suggesting new ways of connecting, creating, and confronting the evolving landscape of our collective future. David Drebin's persona as an artist is as fascinating as his compelling works. In his “character,” he safeguards his authenticity and elicits entertainment from interactions with others, reflecting a cunning commentary on the ubiquitous self-focus in our modern society. He transcends this self-centricity, illustrating the power of empathy and active listening to enrich human connections. Drebin's photography is a distinct blend of truth and imagination. His signature method involves capturing the untold stories resonating in the moments before and after an image. Coupled with his relentless pursuit of truth, his art becomes a riveting dialogue on the human experience. Reinforcing his philosophy, Drebin shares, "I prefer to understand others than be understood." It speaks to his commitment to empathetic connections, proposing that authentic love and growth emerge from comprehending others' realities. This is closely tied to his appreciation for being underestimated, as he believes it provides an unanticipated edge, allowing for startling outcomes and novel paths of artistic expression. He vividly captures life as a series of moments. His artistic perspective intertwines with the journey of life itself, appreciating the beauty in transitions as much as in peak events. Concurrently, he sees the advent of AI technologies – or as he playfully calls them, "drebinologies" – as another transition, another moment before a photographic image, suggesting the vast, untapped potential in the realm of artistic expression. Even as he acknowledges the inevitability of change and eventual endings, Drebin urges us to manage our energies wisely. He cautions against the hollowness of victory in arguments, underlining the need for understanding over ego-driven debates. His view of success echoes the impermanence he perceives in all things, and he proposes that success is a continuous journey rather than a destination, requiring discipline and patience. What does it take to not only find your purpose but actually live it every single day of your life? Today, Erik Cabral talks with David Drebin, a world-renowned photographer, artist, and author. He is working on global campaigns for huge and iconic brands, and producing massive, stunning art shows all over the world. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Why he detaches his emotion from the experience of creating the art itself Internal vs. external gratification The duality of fear and confidence Creating art based on his inner turmoil Obsession with the process and detachment from the result Episode Highlights: [01:59] Finding Your Purpose The two most important days of your life are the moment you were born and the moment you realize why you were born. The keys to finding your purpose are self-belief, a vision you have for yourself, and relentless pursuit all day every day. You need to believe it to see it in a world that needs to see it to believe it. [09:46] Internal vs. External Gratification There has to be a burning desire to create a masterpiece without regard to what the people want because people are going to want what they are going to want. Rather, it's about what you put out there. You're living for internal gratification, instead of external gratification that will leave you always wanting for more. [14:22] The Duality of Fear and Confidence For David, failure was never an option. He never thought of failing or losing because he looks at losing as learning. And so, he has never lost, but he has only learned. David believes it's important to never really pat yourself on the back and think that you ever made it. You have to always be confident and always be a little bit scared. This duality of fear and confidence is what drives him internally. It's about what you tell yourself, and not what you expect to hear from others. Resources Mentioned: daviddrebin.com and @daviddrebin Entrepreneurs Circle podcast is an On Air Brands production. Today's expert guest is David Drebin. A graduate of Parsons School of Design in NYC, David is a multidisciplinary artist who works with various art forms producing limited edition works including Photographs, Lightboxes, Neon Light Installations, Diamond Dust works, and more. His work combines voyeuristic and psychological viewpoints in a unique manner, offering the viewer a dramatic insight into the kinds of emotions and experiences many of us have felt at some point in our lives. Nothing upsets David more than wasted talent. Everybody has a talent, you just have to dig deep to find out what that it. If you're struggling to find your purpose, you have to try new things. You have to know what you're bad at so you know what you can be good at. And don't be afraid to, as David puts it, “flirt with danger.” Which means don't play it safe, and don't be afraid to take risks in pursuit of your passion. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “I think it's a world of people who think about what other people think before they think. But I think true uniqueness is to have your own thoughts and to be yourself. So the greatest advice I could give to anybody, including myself, is to be yourself because everybody else is taken. So don't look at what everyone else is doing, go deep within yourself and just go be you. Be you. That's it.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Welcome to Episode #468 with David Drebin, a world renowned photographer, artist and author.   During this episode, we talk about his passion for arts and photography and how he sees life through his camera. Here are some highlights: It's important to build yourself and everything else will come. Have a lot of passion for what you do. But also have a sense of detachment. It's important to have that duality of passion and detachment. It's NOT about people who don't believe in you. It's all about people who you don't believe in. Reverse it. Instead of looking for people to believe in you, find people that you believe in. 99% of success and happiness depends on sleep, exercise, and hydration. Relationships are like plants. If you stop watering them, they die in the end. It's so simple. Social media is also a way to scale your brand instead of waiting for other people to promote you. Promote yourself in a clever way and build an audience. Provide value. Entertain or educate people. For social media, it's important to post a lot, but reveal very little about yourself. If you're looking for feedback from other people, you're relying on external gratification and that is dangerous. All gratification has to come internally. The biggest battle is actually with yourself. It comes down to self acceptance or rejection.   Learn more about the contents discussed in this episode: Connect with David via Instagram and his website Get David's books here
