today we explore the evolving competitive landscape of artificial intelligence in 2026, highlighting a transition from raw power to speed and rapid iteration. Major tech entities like OpenAI, Google, and Meta are pursuing distinct strategies, such as embedding AI into existing ecosystems or championing open-source models to commoditize the industry. This environment is further complicated by the rise of Small Language Models, which offer cost-effective and specialized alternatives for on-device and enterprise use. NVIDIA remains a dominant force through vertical integration, positioning energy efficiency and integrated hardware-software stacks as the ultimate barriers to entry. Additionally, the shift toward autonomous AI agents and coding-centric capabilities is now the primary driver of developer momentum and market narrative. Finally, the sources note that regulatory pressures and national security directives are increasingly shaping how quickly these innovations are adopted across global and governmental sectors.

With Scott Hennen still navigating the fjords of Norway, guest host Greg Steeman takes the reins for a deep dive into the engine room of North Dakota's economy and national security. This episode tackles the "necessary evil" of the Iran conflict and its impact on the $4 gas prices hitting local families. Steeman is joined by Public Service Commissioner Sheri Haugen-Hoffert to demystify the surge of massive data centers across the state—addressing concerns over water usage and "strangled energy." The conversation then shifts to the soil with Ag expert Bridget Riedel and drainage specialist Levi Otis, who provide a blunt look at the "asset leak" facing farmers and the historic high-stakes decisions being made in the livestock market. Finally, David Fisher of Landmark Capital sounds the alarm on a brewing $39 trillion debt crisis and explains why the world's elite are quietly pivoting to gold and silver. Standout Moments & Timestamps 00:02:10 – Poking the "Big Blue Bear" Greg Steeman and Kevin Flynn discuss the tactical necessity of the Iran conflict. Kevin warns radical factions that they have "poked the bear" too long, arguing that surgical strikes are the only language the regime understands. 00:08:15 – Data Centers: North Dakota's New Buzzword Public Service Commissioner Sheri Haugen-Hoffert clears the air on data centers. She explains exactly what the PSC regulates (transmission lines) and what they don't (noise and citing), while Kevin reveals the surprising truth about water recycling at the Harwood facility. 00:14:40 – The AI War with China The team addresses listener concerns about "massive" data centers. Greg notes that the U.S. is currently in a high-stakes AI war with China, making local infrastructure a matter of national security rather than just "curing cancer" scenarios. 00:20:42 – The $400,000 Combine Crisis Ag expert Bridget Riedel highlights a staggering economic disconnect: farmers are dealing with 2015 commodity prices but paying 2026 input costs, noting that a used combine that cost $187k three years ago now fetches $400k. 00:26:05 – 228 Tires and a Decision to Run A lighthearted but telling moment where Bridget shares that the average U.S. farm maintains 228 tires. This leads to a heavy discussion on whether aging cattle producers should "take the money and run" during historic market highs or risk a 700-head expansion during a drought. 00:31:22 – Managing the Water Table Levi Otis of Deep Roots Drainage breaks down the "science of the sponge,"…

This episode examines the 2026 conflict involving Iran, highlighting a transformative shift toward artificial intelligence in modern warfare. This "AI war" features the massive deployment of deepfakes and synthetic media to manipulate public perception and conduct psychological operations. Beyond information control, the military relies on AI-driven targeting software and autonomous systems, which critics warn can lead to devastating civilian casualties and ethical crises. The conflict also targets physical technological infrastructure, such as data centers and the supply chains for liquid helium essential for semiconductor production. Ultimately, these reports call for urgent international regulations to address the legal and humanitarian risks posed by the rapid automation of the "kill chain."

In today's Cloud Wars Minute, I cover Oracle's Q2 results.Highlights00:19 — One of the hottest Cloud Wars Top 10 companies right now is Oracle. And I want to talk today a little bit about Oracle's Q2 results from last week. I think there's been a little bit of the fog of war, the fog of AI war specifically here, that has obscured the impact behind what's really going on with Oracle's numbers.01:06 — Let's look at Oracle's RPO (remaining performance obligation) results from Q2. RPO rose 433% to $523 billion. Far bigger than any RPO any other company has in the last three months, due in large part to deals with NVIDIA, Meta, and others not named. These are hard and fast numbers about where Oracle's business is headed in the future02:36 — What's going on elsewhere? The biggest cloud vendor in the world, Microsoft, its most recent RPO numbers went up 51% to $392 billion. Those are remarkable numbers. Looking forward, customers around AI and cloud are giving far more of their contracted future business to Oracle than to Microsoft.04:06 — Oracle's OCI cloud business is bigger than its applications business. Its Autonomous Database revenue rose 40%, and its multi-cloud business is up 817%. That number is a little misleading, because the business is relatively new, but I don't know anybody out there who would not want to have businesses growing at 817%.04:45 — I've been focusing a lot on RPOs for the last two and a half years or so. It's a great indicator of where customers are committing their money for the future. These big contracts that have signed are going into the past. Nothing wrong with that, but that reflects where the money in the past has gone. RPO is showing the future. Visit Cloud Wars for more.

Can America Win the AI War with China?

Two weeks ago, America thought it was leading the AI race. Then out of nowhere, an unknown Chinese start-up turned the American stock market—and that assumption—on its head. DeepSeek, a Chinese company founded less than two years ago, released a free AI chatbot that rivals the most advanced available open AI products. And they did it despite America's prohibition on shipping our most advanced microchips to China.  America was caught flat-footed, asking how did this happen? And could we actually lose this tech war?  Now, if your understanding of computers stops at the term hard drive, don't worry. Today on Honestly, Bari has two incredible guests, experts on both AI and China, who are going to break it all down for you. Tyler Cowen is an economics professor, AI expert, and a must-read writer at his blog, Marginal Revolution. He is joined today by Geoffrey Cane, an expert on China and the author of The Perfect Police State: An Undercover Odyssey Into China's Terrifying Surveillance Dystopia of the Future.  Today, how this happened and what it means. And can America win the AI war with China? Header 6: The Free Press earns a commission from any purchases made through all book links in this article.
