Kazakhstan's crypto mining tax revenue dropped in 2023, following the government's introduction of new regulations-The drop in revenue suggests that the industry is feeling the pressure, and some miners may be forced to leave the country. Even with rampant inflation and rapidly accelerating interest rates, household borrowing climbed to start 2022 and hit a new record, the Federal Reserve reported Tuesday.Consumer debt and credit rose 1.7% in the first quarter to $15.84 trillion. The rise in total household credit was propelled largely by a $250 billion increase in mortgage debt, which now stands at $11.18 trillion, an increase of 10% from the first quarter in 2021.Consumers are returning to their previous habits with the balance between goods and services (Restaurants and dining out) spending back to where it stood in May 2020, according to data adjusted for inflation from Flexport, a freight forwarder. A separate metric cited by Goldman Sachs shows goods consumption about 5 percent higher from before the pandemic.Follow the Amazon TrendsInvestment firms noted that macro indicators appear to be deteriorating at a faster pace in a significant development for Amazon (AMZN)."The resulting negative sentiment across both consumers and businesses is likely to result in more cautious spending patterns, with headwinds worsening as the economic slowdown deepens. For consumers, that means less discretionary spend on pricier physical goods and more price sensitivity to service items like dining out."Will China boost spending with a Digital Yuan airdrop?The airdrop is a joint effort between the city of Shenzhen and Meituan Dianping, China's leading food delivery app. As per instructions, users would need to first log in to the Meituan app, sign up for the incentive, and then potentially receive the e-CNY rewards as part of a lottery draw.If chosen, the e-CNY is then dispensed to users and can be spent at more than 15,000 in-app merchant terminals that accept the state-owned digital currency. Previously, the People's Bank of China had identified the e-CNY as a potential tool for advancing regional economies and improving the efficiency of select financial services. Meanwhile, sources at Meituan say that the e-CNY plays a vital role in boosting spending and revitalizing local businesses. Shenzhen is also currently one of three cities in China where residents can pay municipal taxes and charges with the e-CNY.

Russia's war in Ukraine is obscuring one very alarming threat posed by the Chinese regime: its system of paperless money, warned hedge fund manager Kyle Bass.

WeChat, China's Twitter-like social media app, announced on April 6 that it has embraced digital Chinese yuan in certain pilot regions as part of its intensified cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party.

On March 31, 2022, the People's Bank of China held a symposium on the pilot work of digital RMB (digital yuan) research and development to summarize the preliminary research and development pilot work, and arrange the deployment of the next stage of work. Present at the symposium were Yi Gang, Governor of the People's Bank of China, and Fan Yifei, Vice Governor of the People's Bank of China, as per a statement from PBoC. Also attending the symposium were relevant departments, bureaus, and directly affiliated units of the People's Bank of China, all-digital RMB participating R&D institutions, and relevant “responsible comrades” of the local governments and branches of the People's Bank of China in the pilot regions. “The meeting believed that since 2017, the People's Bank of China, together with all participating research institutions, and with the strong support of the party committees and governments of the pilot areas, have made overall plans and careful organization to carry out the pilot projects steadily, dynamically improve the business technology design, continue to innovate application scenarios, and focus on solving financial service difficulties,” the statement reads. Pain points verified the feasibility and reliability of digital yuan According to the meeting parties, the pain points have preliminarily verified the feasibility and reliability of digital renminbi-related theories, policies, businesses, and technologies. At present, the digital renminbi has formed a number of application models in the fields of wholesale and retail, catering, cultural tourism, and government affairs payment. Without providing any specific data or other evidence, the PBoC states that the major pilot projects such as the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics have been successfully completed, “the number of users, merchants, and transactions participating in the pilot has grown steadily, and the market has responded well.” The PBoC does not, however, seem to consider the digital renminbi to be ready for a full-scale roll-out in the entire country, instead, trials will continue in additional cities and areas. The PBoC pointed out that there remain issues that need to be sorted out through further research and exploration. To this point, the statement says the research and development of digital renminbi will face new situations and new problems in terms of demonstrating convenience, optimizing inclusiveness, highlighting innovation, ensuring security, reflecting compliance, and strengthening sustainability. Furthermore, the PBoC emphasized that the digital renminbi research and development pilot should adhere to the “people's nature”, without expanding on the meaning of this expression. The future is dependent on softer values In the statement there are, however, hints that the future success of the digital renminbi, and for it “to play a greater role”, the issue is not a technical one but is rather dependent on “softer” values such as the coverage and inclusiveness of financial services, it helps local economic development, supports the construction of digital government affairs, improves the quality and efficiency of financial services for the real economy, and improve the business environment. “In the process of the development, promotion, and popularization of the digital renminbi, the policy design should fully stimulate the enthusiasm and creativity of financial institutions, technology enterprises, local governments, and other parties, and encourage competition in the promotion and operation,” the statement reads, which may be interpreted as some participating entities aren't as enthusiastic about the digital renminbi as the Chinese government and the PBoC would want them to be. Other areas mentioned in the statement, that seem to need further research, include legislative questions and the impact of the digital renminbi on the financial system, the security of the digital renminbi system, and the relationship between privacy protection ...

The 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, in February, was originally planned as the grand international debut for the digital yuan. Those plans, however, went sideways with another outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.Of all the current CBDC pilots, the digital yuan elicits significant interest, given China's economic heft and geopolitical ambitions. But does a gold-backed cryptocurrency make sense if the Chinese virtual currency is engineered to remove all freedoms and liberties from every human being by governing where you go, what you buy, and what you are allowed to believe? By contrast, gold has served as the most fair, egalitarian and pro free- market money ever used by humankind. While gold systems have in the past helped to slow down government theft by way of inflation, is there any reason to think the Chinese Communist Party would allow a gold-backed monetary system to lead to a free market capitalist system? What would be the purpose then of China backing a digital Yuan by gold? Those and other questions regarding money and other market matters will be asked of Frank who is the chairman of HIVE Blockchain Technologies a company that mines Ethereum. Out of this, China will forge financial autonomy. Its digital currency will eventually be interoperable with other tokens and blockchains, allowing its businesses and their foreign trading partners to move money across borders without using dollars as an intermediary. They'll bypass New York, in other words. Solution: Open MoneyThis won't happen overnight. But the effect on confidence in the U.S. could arise within the next four years. How should Washington react? Christopher Giancarlo, former CFTC chairman and the founder of the Digital Dollar Foundation, is pushing for a digital dollar that would integrate constitutionally enshrined privacy protections, making it more appealing than the digital yuan, which many fear will become a Beijing surveillance tool. But will people truly trust the U.S. not to monitor digital dollar transactions? After all, as Jennifer Zhu Scott, chair of the Commons Project, noted in this week's Money Reimagined podcast, global finance is already subject to a comprehensive U.S.-led system of surveillance.So, while we're right to worry about a Chinese “panopticon” ingesting people's identifying information, that's not the data threat the U.S. can or should compete with. In the same podcast episode, Policy 4.0 CEO Tanvi Ratna said the bigger issue is how troves of DCEP-generated anonymized data will enable Chinese businesses to extract huge efficiencies and unlock innovation across decentralized economic systems.There may be a way for the U.S. to compete here. But it will require a radical, disruptive solution.
