Dylan talks about how funny Thank Goodness You're Here is, and we discuss the biggest news stories of the week. Show Dot Points Game Informer, one of the last gaming magazines, is shutting down after 33 years. The closure of Game Informer is part of a trend of layoffs and closures in the gaming journalism industry. GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen has emphasized the need to scrutinize expenses and eliminate waste. The closure of Game Informer marks the end of an era for gaming magazines and reflects the decline of print media in the gaming industry. Digital content creators, such as YouTubers and TikTokers, have become more influential in shaping opinions and preferences in the gaming community. Game Informer covers hold nostalgic value for many gamers, evoking memories of browsing through magazines in the past. The lack of archiving of Game Informer's content is disappointing, as it prevents access to valuable gaming journalism and historical articles. The release of a new episode of the Double Fine Adventure documentary series provides deeper insight into the passion and challenges of video game development. 2 Player Productions is a documentary crew that's been embedded with Double Fine Productions for more than a decade now, having first come onboard in order to follow the development of Broken Age and create the Double Fine Adventure series. However, it's their latest work that's absolutely knocked my socks off. Double Fine PsychOdyssey is, quite simply, the best video games documentary work I've ever seen. It follows the much longer development of Psychonauts 2 and is just the most vulnerable, revealing look into what it really means to create a video game. I cannot recommend it enough. Gosh. It's so good."There's a lot of concern about that meeting, rightfully so. It was the most intense thing we've had on camera and everybody was upset, we were upset. I thought that if we cut it out, it would do a disservice to the evolution of the studio and the way that mindsets at the studio were shaped, the way that the culture was shaped... I'd like to think it shaped the way everybody thought about crunch and what that meant, what that word even means."Support the show

Broken Age is a stunningly beautiful coming of age story. Beyond the narrative itself, its Kickstarter-fairytale-turned-cautionary-tale development cycle has been entertainingly and meticulously documented and helped chart the frontier of large-scale crowdfunded videogame projects. Listen to the Autumn of Adventure panel muse on this, the Double Fine Adventure documentary detailing this game's development, and the amazing characters while we retrace our experience through this incredibly framed story. Just what is the deal with indie games? When did they become financially viable? How did they become so popular? And what is "indie" anyway??? This week, Jason, Maddy, and Kirk look at the modern history of indie games, from Braid and Castle Crashers to the Nintendo Switch's big bumps. They talk about the rise of digital distribution, some misguided old comments from former Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime, and whether "indie" even means anything anymore. One More Thing:Kirk: Monster Hunter RiseMaddy: Vaccine appointment tipsJason: GnosiaLinks:The excellent Double Fine Adventure documentary series:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVwg-9WL3dEArekkz Gaming’s MH Rise longsword tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jscDTUOHdw&ab_channel=ArekkzGamingSupport Triple Click: http://maximumfun.org/joinJoin the Triple Click Discord: http://discord.gg/tripleclickpodTriple Click Ethics Policy: https://maximumfun.org/triple-click-ethics-policy/

Jason, Corrigan, and Ben all watched the 20-part documentary series "Double Fine Adventure" all about the making of Broken Age (see our last episode for more details on that game). It chronicled everything from the artwork to the development to the budget to the reception, and wow. It was jam-packed full of golden nuggets that we hope to distill down into a golden nugget reduction that's just to die for. Lots of hilarity ensues. Also we announce the game we'll be playing for our 50th episode later this year. Check it out!Hey there. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with a friend. Emma and Gil welcome Anya Combs and Luke Crane from Kickstarter to discuss how crowdfunding is changing, especially in light of recent events. Anya: anya@kickstarter.com, games@kickstarter.com, @anyayna Luke: @burning_luke, burningwheel.com Note that this episode was recorded on March 25, 2020, so if we talk about things happening "a few weeks ago," we're referring to late February/early March. This wouldn't normally be an important detail, but things are changing a lot quickly these days. SHOW NOTES 0m00s: Playtest safely online with Gil and Emma! 1m28s: For those who have never heard it, the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" set a template for punk rock's sound well before its time. (Explicit language warning) 3m52s: More info about the Burning Wheel roleplaying system. 8m32s: The original Alien Frontiers and Cards Against Humanity projects. Both were modest successes. Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, and Shenmue were much larger successes. 9m48s: The original Kingdom Death: Monster was a wild success, but the second edition was one of the largest Kickstarter Games campaigns ever run. 9m56s: We recorded this episode before Frosthaven launched. As of the time of this episode's release, it has raised over $7 million USD. 10m31s: Gil's Kickstarter projects are all visible here. 12m39s: The Dispel Dice Kickstarter project. 17m23s: The F*** Yeah Dice Kickstarter project (Explicit language warning, of course). 16m56s: Itten made the unique game Stonehenge and the Sun. Oink and Bouken don't have any Kickstarter projects, but their games are worth your attention for their distinctive look and style. Luke also brings up Bouken's game Diet & Friends. 17m17s: W.M. Akers has a series of baseball simulators called Deadball. 18m23s: You can find Emma's weekly news show on Twitch every Friday at 2 pm Pacific. 20m00s: Here's the Fantastic Factories Kickstarter project. Here's the Kickstarter for Coloma, designed by Jonny Pac, who was on Ludology 221: The Pac Less Traveled. 20m36s: Here's the Gladius Kickstarter project. 21m51s: More info about the Skylanders video game, which discontinued support in 2017. 24m42s: Here's the Multiverse Kickstarter project. (Incidentally, if you're interested in a platform similar to Multiverse, check out Roll20). 27m34s: More info about the Jackbox party games. 28m20s: The Spaceteam Kickstarter project (Note that this is for the original video game, not the card game inspired by it). 30m10s: More info about Twine. We go more into detail about this platform in Ludology 217: What IF? 30m43s: More info about AVOWEL, the mobile version of Wordsy. 31m05s: The latest Chronicles of Crime Kickstarter. 32m46s: Commands & Colors by Richard Borg is a family of outstanding light wargames that includes BattleLore and Memoir '44. 34m33s: More information about Kickstarter's Make100 and ZineQuest initiatives. 43m16s: More information about the newest God of War game https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_War_(2018_video_game). 43m36s: Animal Crossing! Hoo hoo! That's a link to more info about New Horizons, the newest game in the series. There's a lot of interesting discussion going on about the game and how timely it is, how its soothing imagery is perfect for the current times, and how it offers an escapist fantasy (literally escaping to a desert island) to people who are stuck at home. 47m13s: Ankh, the newest CMON game, is at over $1 million USD from about 14,000 backers at the time of this episode release. If you want to hear him GM, check out the actual play podcast Story Roost and its first story arc, The Unmarked. Greg Rice is the VP of Business Development for Double Fine, and was the producer of the Double Fine Adventure and Broken Age. Greg Rice also has a minor in dance. I was first exposed to Greg through the Double Fine Adventure, the excellent documentary by 2 Player Productions about the development of Broken Age. Games are such huge collaborative projects that it's rare to get such an insight into the people behind the scenes and the many hands that go into making a game. Greg seemed the perfect example of somebody who contributes so much to the development of a game, but whose hand may go unseen in the final product. I was delighted to talk to him. We talk about learning to read with Zelda, playing GTA as a tourist, why the Dreamcast is the greatest console, his experience playing VR Rez in the vibration suit and his unlikely journey to Double Fine via Opera Singing, Musical Theatre & training to be a doctor (!?) Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa. Games discussed: Super Mario Bros. Goldeneye, Rez, Guitar Hero, Proteus, Psychonauts, Destiny, 140 and The Lion King.

Listeners asked and so our second season premiere covers a topic that everyone struggles with: Procrastination. Unfortunately for Brett and Nick, life quickly began to imitate art when they found themselves caught in their own web of procrastination to get the episode finished. Brett and Nick ask: Why do we put things off? Why do we avoid them? And, if procrastination is just a symptom of something larger, then what are its sources? For answers, Brett turns to writer and blogger, Mark Manson. Mark shares some thoughts from his insightful article, “Everything You Wanted To Know About Procrastination But Were Too Lazy To Figure Out”. Was Mark able to set Brett right? Will they cure their own procrastination and make it to the end of the episode? Will Nick stop playing Mario Kart? Originally Broadcast 2013/03/29: A more recent example is Majora's Mask on 3DS. Did we even talk about it in this podcast? Listen to find out! Ever since Double Fine Adventure (a.k.a. Broken Age), Kickstarter has been the go-to place to fund games in genres long-thought dead (e.g. Adventure Games), by creators long thought dead (e.g. Al Lowe -- kidding! We love ya puddin'), or franchises long thought dead (e.g. the Mega Man-esque Migthy No. 9 by Keiji Inafune). Is this a good thing? And can it possibly last? Vinnk and Sean discuss their one-night-only Madison Underground live show, including the story of being accosted by a supposedly off-duty Marine while filming some footage for the show. It's a long story, and we totally tell it! We also talk about which Kickstarter games are the most interesting, which ones we've funnded and played, and whether or not having a Wii U stretch goal is an absolute necessity (well, Sean thinks so).
