Guest: Mark Pincus, founder & chairman of Zynga, and managing member & co-founder of Reinvent CapitalBefore Zynga and Facebook made social gaming mainstream, the video game industry was “extreme on this being about art and crafting,” recalls Zynga founder Mark Pincus. He believes his winning instinct was the realization that games were “at least 50 percent science” — but it's not enough to just have the instinct. Mark says entrepreneurs like him have to quickly take multiple shots on the goal and “look for feedback loops that tell you your instinct is right ... you need to get to a minimum viable idea state and you need to find true signal around that idea state, that it's right or wrong, and move on.”Chapters:(01:40) - Rubbing sticks together (07:01) - Virtual businesses (12:10) - Pre-Zynga companies (13:51) - Setting the real intention (17:44) - Internet treasures (23:21) - Disrupting gaming (30:14) - The chip on Mark's shoulder (33:19) - The end of Tribe (37:24) - Zynga Poker (42:59) - Explosive growth (46:57) - Making the virtual real (52:02) - The downturn (58:12) - Stepping aside (sort of) (01:01:50) - Back into the fire (01:08:45) - In the abyss (01:11:46) - What “grit” means to Mark Mentioned in this episode: Dot Earth, Elon Musk and the Boring Company, Uber Eats and Dara Khosrowshahi, ChatGPT, Roblox, Madhappy, Reid Hoffman, Craigslist, Google, Napster and Sean Parker, the California Culinary Academy, Peter Thiel, Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook, Yahoo, John Doerr, Words with Friends, LinkedIn, Tribe.net, Supercell and Ilkka Paananen, FarmVille and Hay Day, Parker Conrad and Rippling, Bing Gordon, Fred Wilson, Brad Feld, the Game Developer's Conference, CNET, Matt Cohler, Don Mattrick, Microsoft and the Xbox, Joe Biden, Jason Citron and Discord, Steve Jobs, Super Labs, Marcus Segal, Frank Gibeau, The Courage to Be Disliked, and Stewart Butterfield.Links:Connect with MarkTwitterLinkedInConnect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

The new TMNT game is out, there's probably a new Nintendo Direct coming soon, and TW initially stopped at NieR ending A. Also, Kusogrande 7 has begun, and TW got a Top Gun game co-designed by Don Mattrick, which is hilarious. Meanwhile, Blaster Master is a fun game with problems that lays an interesting foundation but is far too concerned with wasting your time to fully deliver on it. It is, however, a really interesting and generally enjoyable playthrough, minus a couple of major sticking points. So, we're an Xbox and PC show. You've read the title, you know this. However, a large chunk of the audience write-ins were reflections on the Don Mattrick era and PlayStation's major shifts that have dragged Xbox into a favorable position. I thought for this episode it would be fun with a slower news week to turn our attention toward Bloomberg's reporting of PlayStation honing in on blockbuster titles only. As we continue to say, it's more clear than ever that Xbox and PlayStation are marching to entirely different beats and that means we are certainly in for one of the most interesting console generations. On the news side of things, more information has popped up suggesting Persona 5 Royal is heading to Xbox and some titles such as Everwild, Fable, and Perfect Dark might be caught in the development pipeline for some time! Oh, and debates on if sushi is a fish hot dog.. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Opening up this week the life long friends discuss Microsoft’s new accessibility controller and positive impact it will have on many gamers’ lives. Beyond that Chad continues to play God of War and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, and Holden shares his experience with Virtual Virtual Reality on this week’s Playtime. While $50 million may have had something to do with that he leaves behind some problems like Microsoft's insistence of shooting itself in the foot by talking about Xbox One and advertisements with Kinect.Nintendo isn't spared either as the Wii U is in a world of hurt according to Michael Pachter and Jen, Robert, Adam and Scott don't necessarily disagree but for slightly different reasons. They also talk about the word from Double Fine about Broken Age being split into two games because it became too big for the $4 million it got from Kickstarter as well as a laundry list of games that are currently in the queue. This include the upcoming Nintendo 3DS title, [Redacted].As for the Burning Question of the Week, Scott asks, "What would it take to get you to see The Lone Ranger?

This week the boys sit down to discuss the week's latest releases, which doesn't amount to much, so they've added in a bit more. Look out for chat of Injustice, Rogue Legacy, Deadpool, Spartacus Legends and Don Mattrick's departure from Microsoft. But wait! It is a time for discussions and pondering as we reach episode 55 of ConCal. This week is not the previously announced The Last of Us spoilercast, as that had to be delayed by a week. Fear not! Brad and I spent this episode discussing many things, both enlightening and illuminating. Join us as we take a look into the departure of Don Mattrick from Xbox, the addition of balloons to the haphazardly released SimCity, and a new race venturing into the companion slot in Star Wars; The Old Republic. If this is not enough to peak your interests, then I also offer you two tales of meeting people I wanted to be as a child. There may also be some ramble, as is expected when one is on Constantly Calibrating.
