The recent elections in eastern Germany, where the Alternative for Germany (AfD) became the first far-right party to win a parliamentary election at the state level in postwar Germany, raised significant concern internationally about what's happening in Germany. Should we be concerned?  In this episode of International Horizons, RBI Director John Torpey talks with Marcus Böick, assistant professor of history at the University of Cambridge, on the difficulties that have attended the process of unification in Germany since 1989 and their consequences for German politics. Böick addresses the reasons behind the AfD's success and how those in eastern Germany have experienced the process, their dissatisfaction with traditional parties and their migration policies, and their sense of being ignored by the country's political elites. Böick delves into AfD's radicalization and the charisma of Björn Höcke as a factor in AfD's victory, and the prospects for the election in Brandenburg this weekend, which could further complicate Germany's political landscape at both the state and national levels. In June Europeans will go to the polls to decide the make-up of the next European Parliament. Far-right parties are expected to make significant gains in several countries, including Germany — the most populous country in the European Union. Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) — Germany's most popular far-right party — have been using social media, especially TikTok, to appeal to younger voters. Their political rivals, including Chancellor Olaf Sholz and his Social Democratic Party, are now playing catch-up when it comes to TikTok.The BBC's Kristina Volk explains who the AfD are and describes some of the controversies surrounding them during the current election campaign. TikTok specialist Marcus Bösch describes the growth of the AfD on the platform. And we hear from Maggy Hess, who started the #ReclaimTiktok campaign, which makes viral content to counter the influence of the AfD. Steve interviews Jesse Park, President and Co-owner of amplifi. Jesse shares his journey of transforming the company from a print specialist to an agency that helps nonprofit organizations enhance their fundraising efforts , and how he built the marketing function from scratch. Jesse's background is not in marketing, but he recognized the need to improve the company's brand awareness and demonstrate their expertise by provide valuable resources to the nonprofit sector. Steve and Jesse discuss the challenges of marketing in a small business and the importance of aligning marketing efforts with business goals. Deciding on which of the pillars of marketing will have the most impact on growth - between brand awareness, product position, demand generation, and sales enablement – is critical when deciding on the initial strategy. They emphasize the need to hire for the specific skill sets that will drive results, rather than trying to find a marketing manager who can do everything. Jesse highlights their decision to intentionally repurpose content across different marketing channels and stages of the customer journey. By strategically using blogs, e-newsletters, case studies, webinars, and more, amplifi ensures their marketing efforts cover all areas of the sales funnel and drive both brand awareness and sales enablement. Managing a marketing team as a small business owner can be challenging, especially when juggling other responsibilities. Jesse talks about the importance of aligning marketing metrics with revenue and incentivizing marketing efforts accordingly; and clear communication and alignment between leadership and the marketing team. The episode concludes with Jesse's drink of choice for a fun marketing chat: a straight up scotch, or occasionally a James Baldwin cocktail for a unique twist on an espresso martini. Key Takeaways  Small businesses can build an effective marketing function with a single team member, so long as it's backed by a clear strategy Content marketing plays a crucial role in establishing expertise and driving brand awareness, while also supporting sales enablement and product positioning. Align marketing efforts with the different stages of the marketing funnel to maximize impact and drive customer engagement. For the Founder or CEO, balancing marketing responsibilities with other business functions requires clear communication, prioritization, and a focus on revenue-related metrics.  Resources and LinksConnect with Jesse Park on LinkedIn."Rise above the noise" with amplifiRead Steve's post on "The Four Pillars of Marketing"The recipe for the James Baldwin cocktail at  Marcus B&P in Newark? Addressing food insecurity in schools was actually one of my main focuses as a first year teacher many years ago as an environmental educator. I was overly enthusiastic and naive about the promise of schoolyard vegetable gardens solving all food insecurity among the 10+ million children living in hunger in the US.  Years later it is still a focus of mine but I have learned so much along the way. This conversation with author and professor Marcus B. Weaver-Hightower helped shed much more light onto the school lunch situation here in the US. I find it to be especially relevant with over 30 states cutting food stamp benefits, federal aid ending for free school lunches for all, and then in the other direction states making free lunches for all students no matter their income. There is a lot of food news in the cycle as of lately and Marcus B. Weaver-Hightower helps pull back the curtain on much of it. As the son of James Winchester, a wealthy Tennessee pioneer, entrepreneur and business partner of Andrew Jackson, Marcus B. Winchester had a front row seat to the birth of the volunteer state. In this episode, one of his descendants, Ginger Hadley, shares some of her research that brings to light more about Winchester's fascinating life, successful career and sad ending. Winchester grew up at Cragfont, the first and finest mansion on the Tennessee frontier, spent time as a prisoner during the War of 1812 and was present as Andrew Jackson signed the Treaty of Old Town with the Chickasaw. Winchester was appointed Memphis' first mayor and postmaster and opened one of the first general stores and ferries in the new town on the bluff of the Mississippi River. As Hadley discovered in her research, Winchester's marriage to a young woman with Osage ancestry resulted in much persecution and the couple and their children having to live outside the city limits of the town he governed.
