Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss King's Quest 2: Romancing the Throne. Now a king, Graham requests companionship and follows his Magic Mirror's visions of a kidnapped Princess to gain a bride. The second proper King's Quest game if we don't count Hi-Res Adventure # 2: The Wizard and the Princess, King's Quest 2: Romancing the Throne has more of a plot of sorts than the original. Instead of retrieving three treasures to become king, you are opening three doors to get a bride. In all seriousness, there are some ease of use features (less frustrating stair climbing, warnings when a monster enters a screen) that make the game a bit more palatable. An ending in a chapel has some winning cameos and Al Lowe gets to show off his music chops here in brief motifs that play in certain scenes based off public domain music. Mark Blankenship returns to discuss TWO eminently English scandals from the middle of the last century. Mark brought Amazon's three-part take on the Jeremy Thorpe "business," A Very English Scandal, up for discussion, and we contemplated -- as Toby and I did last week -- how outlawing human behavior turns a whole bunch of humans into criminals, and creates more problems than it solves. The Smithsonian Channel premiered a documentary special on Prohibition last week, and while my guest Toby Ball and I learned a lot of new cocktail recipes, we also kind of couldn't figure out who the show is for -- heritage-drinks fans? history buffs? the collectibles market? It's a serviceable show, but superfluous, because... ...we also watched Ken Burns's 2011 three-parter, Prohibition, which in addition to a firmer grasp of its brief and of building a historical narrative also features the Mayor of Hollywood; no distractingly cartoonish re-enactments; and the kind of voice-over writing that makes you want to learn more, not change the channel. Both documentaries pointed up certain unsettling parallels to today's political landscape, and both made us endure jazz. Would we recommend either? Outside of the first segment, this week's episode is all about the latest news surrounding the PS3. Some good, some bad, but we haven't talked about PS3 much lately so we decided to devote the whole episode to it. Last week Sony and Immersion kissed and made up, which could mean the return of rumble to the Sixaxis controller (hurray!)--question is, how soon? Then there's the infamous rumor that Sony introducing a Mii/Achievements hybrid called PlayStation Home this week. Not only is the concept itself intriguing, but the way it hit the Internet also made some waves--listen as we discuss all aspects of this issue. Lastly, it came out that European PS3s won't be as backwardly compatible as the US and Japanese systems. What effect will this have on the rest of the world, and where are the 20GB systems? Things start off with the usual segment on what we've been playing, and since it's been two weeks since our last regular show there's lots to talk about. Crackdown, mainly, but there's plenty more as well. Then we end the show by going over some of the comments we got about last week's Al Lowe interview.
