Happy 2024 everyone! This week's show was the first live show of the new year, and we charged into it with new releases, some news from the indie charts, watched a stone-cold indie classic in Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out turn 20 (already!?), and had a little peek ahead at my interview with Chris Barry, who sang and fronted, amongst many other bands, Montreal's first punk band, the glam punk outfit The 222s back in 1978, and the post punk band 39 Steps in the 80s, a band who you may have seen in the Woody Allen film Hannah's Sisters. Look out for the full interview next week! Music this week by: Sprints, The Vaccines, ARXX, Gen and the Degenerates, Courting, The Last Dinner Party, 3 Little Wolves, SYBS, Dream Nails, Bob Vylan, Sam Akpro, Venus Grrrls, Ekkstacy, The 222s, 39 Steps, Franz Ferdinand, Kiwi jr., Kings of Queens. Find this week's playlist here. Do try and support artists directly! PS: CFRC Live Sessions are now on air! And the CFRC funding drive is still on! Donate to help keep our 101-year old station going! Touch that dial and tune in live! We're on at CFRC 101.9 FM in the Kingston area, or on cfrc.ca, Sundays 8 to 9 PM! Apologies for not releasing an episode last month, I've been putting the finishing touches to my new office as well as gigging and recording with my bands, so I didn't have the time to get anything done, in fact I had to postpone a few interviews because of it all which is a reflection of how little time I've had. I'm back now though to let you know what's been going on and what you can expect on the next episode, which will be released next week. The news in this episode revolves around festival line up announcements, tour date announcements and cancellations, new album announcements, the controversy around the buy-out and subsequent lay-offs at Bandcamp, guitarist Jeff Schroeder quitting The Smashing Pumpkins, blink-182 playing a gig in a diner, Blondie's Chris Stein releasing an autobiography, Rat Scabies re-joining The Damned, and Shane MacGowan's ongoing health issues. Singles and EPs by Millie Manders and the Shut Up, Feeder, Cherym, The Sleeping Souls, Bad Cop/Bad Cop, IDLES, Alkaline Trio, Sleaford Mods, Sigrid, Bob Vylan, Grade 2, The Beatles, Deap Valley, Pendulum, and Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes are reviewed. You might have noticed that I'm mixing the podcast up a bit at the moment – speaking to journalists and photographers, label owners and industry people – as well as the obvious musicians that make up the majority of the episodes. Well, in doing that, I had to speak to the head honcho at one of my very favourite indie labels, Jack Clothier, the man at the control deck of the great Alcopop! Records. If you're a fan of Cheerbleederz, Best Ex, Art Brut, Dream Nails, Happy Accidents, Helen Love, The Spook School, Loose Articles, Peaness, Pulled Apart By Horses – I could go on, and on, and on, basically any music made with fizz in its heart – then you'll know the label, already. But I think Jack does a great job on this episode regardless, of explaining why his label is such a special, and beloved, fixture on the scene. Your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, is back to let you know what's been going on since the Chris Constantinou Interview episode went out and what you can expect from the next one. Firstly, a big thanks to Chris for the time he took to talk to me last month, it's been wonderful to make his acquaintance and to get to know him. Special thanks must again go out to Rhiannon Ifans who arranged the meeting in the first place, I'm looking forward to what else she's go up her sleeve! This month I appeared on another music-based podcast: Love That Album, which I'm a big fan of. Myself and the host, Maurice discussed the Tom Robinson Band's debut album Power In The Darkness as well as a lot of the political, societal and musical landscapes of the UK in the 1970s. I had an absolute blast finally meeting Maurice and getting onto his podcast, I hope you either heard it and enjoyed it or will seek it out to listen to, I think that episode makes a great companion piece to this podcast and, if you make the effort to listen to it and you do enjoy it, I hope you subscribe to Love That Album, Maurice is a great host and a fountain of knowledge. His most recent episode came out this week and is an interview with the bassist from the band The Knack, which was a real eye-opener about a band a lot of people dismiss as a one hit wonder. Make sure you listen to that one too! The news this month features bands like Buzzcocks, Black Flag, John Doe, The Linda Lindas, My Chemical Romance, Adolescents, Dream Nails and The Beastie Boys as well as the nominations announced by the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. I also review Dublin-born, now London-based post-punk band Fontaines D.C.'s third album Skinty Fia. Be sure to get in touch on social media or email and do go to Apple Music to leave a rating and review, it really does help and you get the review read out on the show! Until next time, take care and stay safe. Contact Twitter: @BannedBiogs Facebook: @BannedBiographies Instagram: @bannedbiographies E-mail: bannedbiographies@gmail.com

I recorded this episode, with ‘punk witches' Dream Nails - their words not mine - back in January. A lot has happened since then. Some of it bad. Some of it very bad. Some of it very, very, very bad. But some of it pretty good too. The London based riot grrrls have just been announced as the support to 90's alt gods Pearl Jam and the Pixies at their big summer London show this coming July. They're also off on tour with the fast rising Nova Twins – who themselves are coming to this podcast soon - oh, and with COVID restrictions becoming less restricted, the songs from their excellent 2020 released self-titled debut album - released on friends of Spoook, Alcopop! Records - are finally going to be aired live. Should we live long enough to hear them, of course.  I thought it about time to connect with a band I've enjoyed the output of for years now, and so had a conversation with new-ish vocalist Leah Kirby and bassist Mimi Jasson. We talk about drag, the concept of priviledge, how fucking weird auditioning for a band can be. And moose. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. Spoook is also a record label, a promoter, a shop, a Substack - it's many things. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter. Yur Mum are a Brazilian rock duo, formed by Anelise Kunz (bass/Vocals) and Fabio Couto (drums), based in London. The band, who've been active since 2016, have played shows around the world, sharing the stage with DIY stalwarts like Maid Of Ace, Svetlanas, Healthy Junkies, Hands Off Gretel, I-Destroy & Dream Nails, as well as modern-day legends such as New Model Army, The Adolescents, Vice Squad, Kirk Brandon, UK Subs, The Vibrators and TV Smith. In 2021 they signed to Chapter 22 Records, home of Dawn After Dark & Balaam And The Angel, in the UK and M&O Music in France for their new album, their first as a duo, Tropical Fuzz. In order to write their future, the couple had to first revisit their roots, which resulted in a crossover of heavy rock, with melody, groove and a punk attitude. Mark talks vinyl and hunts down new music to enjoy, with music podcaster Elliott Farrar. Elliott's picks In order of discussion: Weird!, by Yungblud Elliott picked Yungblud's second studio album for the way the artist's message of “you do you” bleeds through. Girlfriends, by Girlfriends Pop punk is back, in the form of Travis Mills and Nick Gross' project, which may have a limited shelf-life, given Mills' busy career. Grime MC, by Joe Actually released right at the end of 2019 – but near-as-dammit to 2020 – Grime MC makes Elliott's list for its interesting release, but its honesty and authenticity. Fake it Flowers, by Beabadoobee This debut album by Filipino-Brit Beabadoobee makes Elliott's list for its soulful sound, undercut by rougher guitar riffs. Foolish Loving Spaces, by Blossoms Elliott's final pick was a toss-up between a few contenders, but Blossoms' 2020 album could not be permitted to slip through the net. Mark's picks In order of discussion: RTJ4, by Run the Jewels Mark didn't know people still made hip-hop like this, and was instantly up for the dirty beats and the smart lyrics. Women in Music Pt III, by Haim Mark likes to be taken by surprise, so the variation of songs in Haim's latest album made this an easy second pick. Letter to You, by Bruce Springsteen Mark wanted the Boss for his list, which took him rather by surprise (Mark that is, Bruce doesn't know about the podcast). Turns out the man's still kickin' it, and we must show respect. Saint Cloud, by Waxahatchee It's a lazy Sunday mid-morning, you've got a coffee in hand and you're sat on the sofa listening to some country-tinged indie rock. Shore, by Fleet Foxes Mark's final pick is a band he's enjoyed since 2008, although dropped off his radar a few years back. Shore has some tracks that feel like a return to that warm autumnal sound he enjoyed. Honourable mentions Working Men's Club (self-titled) Dream Nails (self-titled) More of Elliott Farrar Elliott is one half of the Scratched Record Podcast, which you can find in all your usual podcast places, and which brings indie music artists out of the shadows and into your ears every Tuesday.Special Guest: Elliott Farrar.Links: Samara Ginsberg on YouTube Wonderwall x Smalltown Boy, a mashup by Deco

It's nearly CHRISTMAS! So the boys have done a light hearted chat about... well who knows that it was about! They chat everything from Christmas and roast dinners, to not eating cheese before bed. It does turn musical as they chat about the issue with streaming services underpaying its artists. Both sides are covered in what was a rare mature argument from the lads! As always they shouted out some up and coming bands... but this time it's Christmas! Some up and coming bands have some amazing Christmas songs, including THE LUTRAS, RED RUM CLUB, DREAM NAILS, & FEET. See you Christmas Day when the special episode comes out?! Have a good one and see you all soon xxx

This week on the Yellow Brit Road, new indie, Martian fallacies, and those big gay hands. We opened this week with Joni Mitchell's dive through the archives. She released a radio performance of her covering "House Of The Rising Sun" at the CFQC AM Radio Station in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1963 - the earliest known recording of Joni Mitchell. Our second song, David Bowie's Life on Mars? prompted an investigation into the state of extraterrestrial exploration—and its latest advancement, the discovery of life on Venus! ...or is it? We had new music from Supercolour, Newmaj, Rhys E, The Loft Club, TV Face, Dream Nails, Slap Rash and Denise Chaila. Find all these artists online (linked above) and give them some love! Exciting news, this month has been the return of Britpop-era band the Doves! We a track from them. Our masala chai for the week was freshly brewed with local water... new music from PUP (who have a new EP out next month) and Partner (album out November)! Find the streaming playlist for this week's show here. As always, I am honour-bound to remind you: streaming's all good, but do try and support music directly! To get in touch with the show, email yellowbritroad@gmail.com, or tweet the show @YellowBritCFRC. I appreciate the feedback!

This week, the Yellow Brit Road lead to a rainbow (with the pot of gold at the end and everything intact) as we celebrated Pride month. We revelled in the music of LGBTQ+ artists, sang along to Tom Robinson's national queer anthem from 1978 because we're Glad To Be Gay, and celebrated younger artists breaking new ground in queer music, both in Britain and across the world. Featuring David Bowie, Tom Robinson, Pillow Queens, Dream Nails, Petrol Girls, Problem Patterns, Antony and the Johnsons, Noisettes, Readers Wifes, Blur, Pansy Division, and Rufus Wainwright, the explosive playlist for this week can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0qwEvb1iyydklUmSl7T1PX?si=N-vp86ocQzGg9ZOaPS0pwQ! This week we're joined by special guest Caffy St Luce, the fairy godmother of rock, as we explore protest songs through the ages. Kerrie takes us back to the 1930s and what is believed to be one of the first protest songs, Strange Fruit sung by Billie Holiday. We also moonwalk back in time to life in 1979 from politics to the launch of the Sony Walkman before landing at the feet of legends The Slits and their song 'Typical Girl'. This week Anna catches up with Anya Pearson who plays guitar in the punk band Dream Nails. When I interviewed the whole band a little while ago for The Tung they described themselves as ‘riotous punk witches singing in perfect harmony' which is extremely accurate. Anya and Anna chat about everything from Sisqo's ‘Thong Song', to the pure insanity of the concept of Mr Blobby, to the importance of getting comfortable with being alone.
