International Paper Chairman & CEO Andrew Silvernail discusses the company's improvement plan taking shape and equity outlook. International Paper has outlined early steps to improve performance, including boosting Ebitda to $4 billion in the medium term from $2 billion over the past 12 months. Costs savings are expected to account for $1.2 billion of the boost, with the remaining $800 million from its new commercial strategy. This is on top of integrating the DS Smith acquisition, which is projected to close in January. Execution is a risk since the shift represents a complete change in mindset from running mills full out. Allison Berg is sustainability manager for DS Smith North America, where she manages the delivery of the company's Now & Next Sustainability Strategy, which focuses on closing the sustainability loop through better design, protecting natural resources by making the most of every fiber, reducing waste and pollution through circular solutions and equipping people to lead the transition to a circular economy. Allison is passionate about bringing positive change to communities who are underserved and are directly impacted by climate change. Allison Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Circularity and circular design metrics DS Smith's nature focus area and biodiversity targets Bundling low ROI projects like water with higher ROI projects for leadership buy-in Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Allison's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give to other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers?  Get your hands on as much as possible. Sustainability is such an evolving large field ranging from reporting and regulations, carbon water waste projects, circularity, community engagement, safety, biodiversity, etc. The more that you can get your hands on, the better. My role at DS Smith, managing our sustainability strategy specifically for North America, has allowed me to get my hands on a lot of different topics that maybe you wouldn't if you're in a company that's a bit more siloed. If you have the opportunity to do something random, like you're focused on water and someone says, "do you want to pick this community piece up?" Go ahead. If you're open to it, you might as well try. Especially in the job markets, they're really looking for multifaceted people that could do a lot of different varieties of things. That'll put you one step ahead if you're doing all sorts of different things.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability?  Scope 3, because it's such an evolving field that everybody is currently trying to sort through, us included. It'll be really interesting to see that legislation as well. I know the SEC and scope 3 conversation was around recently and didn't really happen here in the US, but it's happening in Europe, so it's only a matter of time before that'll make its way over here. That, and I would say 2030 sustainability goals. I'm really looking forward to when 2029, 2030 comes around. All these companies have these big 2030 goals. Are they going to hit them? And if they don't, what are the consequences that we're going to see from these companies if they do not hit their established targets? I'm definitely looking forward to the next six years or so. It should be interesting.  What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read?  I do a lot of different nonfiction reading at work between reports and standards and regulations and so on, so I'm typically a fiction reader. However, I highly recommend sustainability professionals if they haven't really done so already, to watch An Inconvenient Truth, which is the documentary by Al Gore back in 2006. That documentary in particular is what inspired me to do what I do now. I was hooked the second I watched it. It was really inspiring the way Al Gore presents, he's an amazing presenter. I highly recommend watching that. I know he's done an updated Inconvenient Truth in the last couple of years as well that's more with the times, but I highly recommend it for those who have not seen it yet.  What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work?  Recently I joined the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, the ISSP. They have a lot of interesting resources as well as a new certification called the SEA and the SEP, the Sustainability Excellence Associate and Professional. They have a lot of interesting tools. I would also say relevant industry associations. For example, for me being in the pulp and paper industry, our main trade association, the American Forest and Paper Association, they have a large sustainability component as part of what they do. I assume other relevant industry associations will also have some sustainability component as everybody, including trade associations, have some sort of sustainability goals at this point. Those could be interesting resources as well.  Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at DS Smith?  I am on LinkedIn, Alison Berg, PMP if you'd like to find me. To learn more about DS Smith specifically, dssmith.com/sustainability is where you can find some updates on how we're doing on our sustainability strategy.

London's FTSE 100 enjoyed a better start on Tuesday following a slight dip at the start of the week. Retail figures early on showed sales across the sector ticked up by 1% in August and outdid growth in July, driven by food products and aided by warmer weather. Among companies, packaging firm DS Smith moved higher after reassuring investors a planned £5.8 billion takeover by International Paper was on track despite concerns it could be axed. Watches of Switzerland soared in the meantime, having reiterated full-year guidance and highlighted improving conditions in the UK and US in its report. London's FTSE 100 opened 39 points higher at 8,366 as miners, oil companies and Bunzl lifted the index after the bank holiday. Oil prices surged on a shutdown in Libya lifting BP and Shell while BHP's results overnight boosted the miners. Bunzl shares meanwhile jumped to a new all-time high after the distributor hiked its interim dividend 10%, launched a £250 million share buyback and raised its outlook for the year. Interim revenues dropped 0.4% to £5.7 billion but it said underlying trends are improving. Elsewhere, UK shop inflation fell for the first time in nearly three years. Prices in August were down 0.3% from a year ago, the first fall since October 2021, with non-food items the driver, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). More than 3,500 Next shop workers have emerged victorious after a six-year legal battle for equal pay with warehouse staff. It's a win worth potentially over £30 million in back pay. Paulding County News Podcast Sunday October 22, 2023    Story 1: Ga. deputies honored after saving woman from almost drowning in pond Two Paulding County deputies were honored this week for saving a woman from a near-drowning. Paulding County Sheriff officials said on Sept. 27, Deputy Carlos Ortiz and Deputy Wesley Birjkovff were out in the field following up on individuals who did not show up for Jury Duty. While in the field, the deputies heard reports of a car accident over the law enforcement radio. This from WSB - TV   Story 2: Paulding County deputies search for suspect who they say ran from shooting investigation Paulding County deputies are searching for a suspect connected to a shooting that took place in the Clear Creek Subdivision near US 278 West. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. Deputies investigating the shooting found multiple suspects, and one of them fled the area upon seeing law enforcement. Unfortunately, deputies were unable to apprehend the fleeing individual. The initial incident left one man with gunshot wounds, and he was transported to an Atlanta area hospital. The victim's current condition has not been disclosed. Authorities believe the wounded man might have been picked up by a vehicle, but no description of the vehicle is available. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. Story 3: New initiative aims to sequence half a million genomes of people with African ancestry for health studies                                                                                                            Scientists are aiming to create the world's largest database of genomic information from 500,000 people of African ancestry in order to build a new 'reference genome' and better understand genetic variants that affect Black people. By collecting this data, the hope is to develop new medicines, diagnostic tests, and reduce health disparities, as less than 2% of genetic information being studied today comes from people of African ancestry. The project is funded by pharmaceutical companies, with the data being managed by a nonprofit organization, and will be exclusively provided to HBCUs and institutions involved in Africa.     Weather:  This weeks lows will be in the upper forties low sixties and highs will be in the mid to low seventies with beautiful sunshine all week long until the clouds roll in on Thursday morning.   Story 4: Paulding Arrest Reports   Kristin Aaron Cook arrested on 10/15 and charged with criminal damage to property in the second degree. Clinton Kuykendall said “She's looking rough.” Michelle Caroll commented “Kristen looks a lot like uncle Kris”   Mark Franklin Mays was booked on 10/13 for violation of Family Violence Order. Clinton Kuykendall commented"Wayment... family violence is against the law? Donna Fite said“None of this is nice. This is my son, who unfortunately suffers from mental illness. Think about it again before you make fun”     Misty Paige Williams arrested on 10/13 and booked for probation violation. Candaceandjason Fox said “Still needs Jesus and an butt whopping the way she is going” And  Savannah Williams from Yorkville commented “just letting yall know that my mom is doing very good. she actually turned her self in because she wants to do better so anyone that got something to say can suck it ”     AGAIN, PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE INDIVIDUALS HAVE ONLY BEEN ARRESTED AND ARE NOT CONVICTED. THEY HAVE NOT HAD THEIR DAY IN COURT WHEN WE RECORDED THIS PODCAST. WE WISH THEM LUCK ON THEIR DAY IN THE COURT     Story 5:State Board Member to Hold Public Hearing The State Board of Education will hold a public hearing for citizens in the Fourteenth Congressional District on Thursday, November 2, 2023. The meeting will be held from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Paulding County Schools, 3236 Atlanta Highway, Dallas, GA 30132. The purpose of the hearing is to hear comments from interested citizens and educators within the congressional district regarding the performance and problems of public education. Persons wishing to speak should sign in upon arrival. The Georgia Department of Education does not discriminate on the basis of disability in admission to, access to, or operations of its programs, services, or activities. Individuals who need assistance or auxiliary aids for participation in this public forum are invited to make their needs known to Geraldine Price at gprice@doe.k12.ga.us no later than 72 hours before the scheduled event.   Sports: From the Paulding Sports Chronicles Facebook Page  In the softball championship North Paulding will open up against Mill Creek in Columbus on October 25.        Story 6: US Customs Officials Seize Giraffe Feces from Woman at Minnesota Airport A woman from Iowa was stopped by federal customs agents at Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport for bringing giraffe feces from Kenya in her luggage. She declared the feces, which she intended to use for making jewelry, but customs agents still destroyed the material. While it is possible to bring giraffe feces to the U.S. with proper permits and inspections, there are significant health risks associated with importing fecal matter. Diseases such as African swine fever, classical swine fever, and foot-and-mouth disease, among others, are a concern in Kenya. The woman was not sanctioned for declaring the item but was warned about the potential dangers associated with importing fecal matter.   Social Stories: FB Post #1: DS Smith from Dallas posted on the What's Happening in Paulding County's Facebook Page “Anyone notice their water smells and taste different? I'm in Dallas near the Costco area.” The top commentors were: Tom Szary from Dallas said “Yesterday I was in down town dallas and it smelled like sewage. Maybe that has something to do with it. As a former water technician I will say if you seen what I seen. You won't drink tap water. Ever!!!” And Lin Hirschfield from Dallas said “I'm sticking with wine” Finally Carol Byrd said “Yes!! Gullege- Colbert Rd area Smells like too much chlorine(maybe)lol”   FB Post #2: Paulding County, Ga's Facebook posted Recently, the Board of Commissioners awarded the Seven Hills Boulevard Widening project to CW Matthews with a completion date of September of 2023. The project includes widening the existing road from two lanes to four lanes, with a raised center median and sidewalks along both sides of the road. A dual lane roundabout will be installed at the intersection of Seven Hills Boulevard / Blackberry Run Drive / Bentleaf Drive. The project limits are from the north end of the bridge over Little Pumpkinvine Creek to Cedarcrest Road. It is intended that the contractor will begin staking the working limits and installing the erosion control measures necessary for the project construction starting the week of September 27, 2021. Mid-October, the contractor plans to begin construction activities, such as clearing and grading (removal of trees, fencing, etc). Within the first half of 2022, the widening along with pavement rehabilitation is tentatively scheduled to begin. This work will utilize flaggers, may cause delays, will include shifting travel patterns and lanes, and could be a semi-rough ride until the final layer is laid through the project limits. Updates will be shared periodically during the project construction. Please note, that weather is always a concern and could impact work at times and schedules.   Some of the top comments were from: Lisa Chumley said “Yet hwy 92/381 is still just 2 lanes. Makes no sense.” And Sandra Kato Nicholson who commented “Better traffic control is needed at several schools in Paulding County.” And finally Trevor Freeman from Hiram said “I hope the county starts another rd project before 92 gets done. That will be awesome. Or before dallas Acworth that will be a treat also.”         Here are some things you're talking about: Call us with your thoughts or story at ‪(770) 799-6810  Events:   October 26 BlairOutLoud will be at Los Magueys in Dallas from 6:00-9:00pm October 28 Sara Babb Park will host Nightmare in Paulding from 7:00-11:30pm October 29 Children of the Promise will be at Macedonia Church off of Villa Rica Hwy in Dallas  #eventshappeningnearyou #weekendevents #weekdayevents #whatyouaretalkingabout #whatsgoingoninpauldingcounty #events #loveevents #getyououtofthehouse #funforthefamily  Interview:   www.esogrepair.com      www.chattahoochietech.edu  www.cuofga.org www.daycosystems.com www.angie.atlcommunities.com  www.powerselectricga.com http://www.newseason.cc/   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On our show today, we've got two UK stocks and four US financials. First up, it's DS Smith – the FTSE 100's premier box-making organisation. With a P/E of 8 and a dividend yield above 7, is this a boring box maker, or a cutting-edge packaging outfit? Next, it's Spirax-Sarco. The conglomerate has some impressive credentials for an industrials stock, but is there enough growth still there to support the big price tag? And we're finishing off with a look at some of the earnings from the US banks. JP Morgan's shareholders will be pleased, but what about Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and Blackrock?
