The United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative, will officially launch its Ireland network this November at an exclusive event for senior representatives from business, government, academia, and civil society. The launch aligns with new sustainability compliance regulations in Ireland, aimed at accelerating meaningful and sustainable business actions. The network will be officially launched by Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Global Compact, on the afternoon of 28th November at Dublin's Exo Building. High-level representatives from organisations across the Irish corporate sector will gather to explore how ambitious change can be implemented for a more sustainable future in Ireland. Founded in 2000, the Global Compact Network aims to accelerate and scale the impact of businesses by upholding ten key principles covering human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. To date, 20,000 members across 160 nations have committed to these universal principles, grounded in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, conducting business responsibly, and taking strategic actions through collaboration and innovation. Ireland needs forward-thinking leaders from the private sector committed to prioritising sustainability, says Nessa Whelan, United Nations Global Compact Ireland Country Manager to ensure a future where the UN's Sustainable Development Goals are achieved. "The official launch of the network in Ireland marks a groundbreaking milestone towards driving positive sustainable change. New members can expect to join like-minded organisations that will advance their business beyond mere regulatory compliance, towards sustainable actions that add true value through longevity and profitability." The UNGC launch coincides with the introduction of the Forward Faster initiative in the Irish market - a strategy urging expedited action by Irish businesses to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by the 2030 deadline. With only 15% of the goals currently on track, accelerated and purposeful change from the public and private sectors is essential. With national and international keynote speakers, the event will lead and inspire conversations around some of the most pressing Forward Faster themes for Irish businesses, such as gender equality, living wage, climate action, and water resilience. "We encourage Irish businesses interested in joining an initiative focused on actionable sustainable change to be a part of this thriving community," says Nessa Whelan. Upon launch, new registrants of the Global Compact will join existing Irish members accelerating their impact, including An Post, DAA, Smurfit Kappa, Ryanair, ICON plc, and AIB. The Network launch event is by invitation only, but requests for attendance are being considered. UNGC Ireland invites like-minded business leaders to express their interest by contacting ireland@unglobalcompact.org. See more stories here.

To date, over 24,000 signatories across 160 nations have committed to responsible business conduct and strategic actions that advance the SDGs. In Ireland, the focus is on accelerating corporate engagement beyond regulatory compliance towards sustainability-driven actions that deliver true value through profitability and longevity. Nessa Whelan, United Nations Global Compact Ireland Country Manager, highlights the significance of the launch: "The official launch of the Network in Ireland marks a groundbreaking milestone towards driving positive sustainable change. New participants can expect to join like-minded organisations that will advance their business beyond mere compliance, creating lasting value and fostering profitability through sustainability." The launch of the Forward Faster initiative will also be announced at the event. This global platform provides businesses with clear guidance on where they can make the most significant and rapid impact towards the 2030 SDG deadline. With only 17% of the Goals currently on track, the initiative stresses the urgent need for both public and private sectors to accelerate purposeful change. In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News is joined by Kim Berry, Editor of Food & Drink Business, to provide insight, analysis and commentary on the top news stories shaping change in Australia's dynamic packaging industry in April. We unravel the recent developments concerning Qenos, an Australian plastic resin manufacturer, which has been placed in Voluntary Administration and closed its Botany manufacturing facility. We discuss the impact of this decision on the local packaging industry, highlighting concerns regarding resin standardisation, supply chain interruptions, and the setback to Australia's plastics circularity ambitions. Shifting to broader industry updates, we examine the ongoing bid by Raphael Geminder to acquire full control of Pact and delist it from the ASX. Additionally, we explore the removal of tariffs on Australian wines by China and its implications for the packaging sector, particularly in boosting demand for glass bottles and labels. We also cover significant global mergers, such as the approved acquisition of WestRock by Smurfit Kappa, and notable acquisitions within the food packaging space, including BioPak's acquisition of Huskee. On the recycling front, we highlight Visy's achievements in increasing recycled content in glass packaging and Pact Group's efforts to recycle milk bottles, earning it recognition at the Chemistry Australia Industry Awards.Wrapping up the discussion, we touch upon Australia's progress towards packaging sustainability targets, the upcoming Hive Awards, and the Women in Packaging awards, reflecting on the industry's commitment to innovation and positive change.Links:Sponsor - Trimattwww.trimatt.com - 03 8761 6171 - info@trimatt.com Qenos in VA, Botany plant shutdown confirmedwww.packagingnews.com.au/latest/qenos-in-va-botany-plant-shutdown-confirmedGeminder issues final Pact deadlinewww.packagingnews.com.au/latest/geminder-issues-final-pact-deadlineIndustry welcomes return of China wine tradewww.packagingnews.com.au/latest/industry-welcomes-return-of-china-wine-trade Industry responds to Future Made in Australia planwww.packagingnews.com.au/latest/industry-responds-to-future-made-in-australia-planSmurfit Kappa WestRock merger gets green lightwww.packagingnews.com.au/latest/smurfit-kappa-westrock-merger-gets-green-light BioPak acquires reusable cup enterprise Huskeewww.packagingnews.com.au/latest/biopak-acquires-reusable-cup-enterprise-huskeeVisy's glass reaches 63% recycled content

Green Hushing be Gone! Navigating Sustainability Comms in Business

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Guest post by Nora Lawton, Director and Head of Client Services at Springboard Communications In recent years, marketplace realities have transformed, with sustainability driving the agenda now. Businesses must embrace new reporting obligations under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), highlighted as a game changer by Davy's 2024 insights. The EU Council's consensus on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDD) also signals a pivotal step in enforcing environmental responsibility. These ground-breaking directives signify compliance and commitments for companies and their suppliers. It's essential to recognise that this will impact every business sector, irrespective of size or scale. This is a new era of corporate responsibility, where sustainability is not just an option but an obligation. The direction of travel towards a green economy is loud and clear and we all need to get on board. The Fear of Greenwashing & The Emergence of Green Hushing The fear of greenwashing looms large in the minds of businesses that want to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability.Greenwashing (defined as the deceptive or exaggerated marketing of environmental credentials) poses a significant risk to companies' reputations and credibility. Many of us are aware of Volkswagen's "Clean Diesel" scandal, where the automotive giant falsely marketed its diesel vehicles as environmentally friendly. This scandal not only damaged Volkswagen's reputation but also highlighted the consequences of greenwashing in the corporate world. Many organisations are now hesitant to communicate their sustainability initiatives openly, fearing accusations of insincerity or dishonesty. Enter "green hushing". Driven by the pervasive fear of being stamped with the dreaded label of greenwashing, businesses are delicately balancing on the tightrope between transparency and the looming threat of reputational damage. This has been underscored by the latest insights from South Pole, a prominent authority on offsets, whose annual Net Zero Survey revealed the majority of companies are intentionally decreasing their climate communications. Navigating the Communication Conundrum For companies grappling with the tension between transparency and the fear of greenwashing, navigating the communication conundrum requires balance. The risk of greenwashing is real, yet silence or minimal disclosure is not the solution. Transparency - particularly with publicly stated commitments and demonstrable actions - is critical, as is the level of integrity with which the disclosure is made. Rather than shying away from communication, companies should embrace transparency as a means of fostering accountability and driving positive change. The Transparency Edge survey by Smurfit Kappa, in partnership with the Financial Times, found that 63% of businesses believe they have complete transparency on how and why sustainability decisions are made. The research highlighted the importance of transparency, underscoring how it is "central to building confidence among consumers, investors and critical stakeholders". Those businesses deemed to be 'Sustainability Leaders' - 11% believe they have a robust and actionable sustainability strategy - are "ahead of the pack" the 2023 report said when it comes to four key aspects of transparency: Ensuring alignment between sustainable action and ambition Measuring progress on net zero initiatives Communicating effectively to build trust Independent assurance of sustainability performance Organisations must adopt a proactive and authentic approach to sustainability communications, grounded in transparency, credibility, and accountability. This entails openly sharing information about sustainability practices, goals, challenges, and progress, even when the narrative is not entirely favourable. The recent launch of Siemens EcoTech exemplifies the power of transparency in sustainability communication. Siemens'innovative product lab...

Global supply chains are near breaking point. The pandemic showed their weaknesses and geopolitical tensions, like Ukraine, have exacerbated the issue. And yet the biggest issue facing our world is climate change - and supply chains have a big part to play in the solution. But with complex global supply chains comes challenges - mainly maintaining net zero agendas across multiple partners. Arco Berkenbosch, VP Innovation and Development at Smurfit Kappa tells us how collaboration and experimentation are key to success and that sustainable packaging can make a big difference to our climate goals. Abe Eshkenazi, Chief Executive Officer, Association for Supply Chain Management also extols the virtues of technology to offer visibility across partners and calls for consumer demands to change to help make supply more sustainable. And finally, Stanton Thomas, Senior Vice President of Sustainability Solutions at o9 solutions, joins to show how AI and machine learning can help organisations track and test their supply chain sustainability like never before. Our Sources for the show: FT Resources, Mckinsey, Gartner, Morgan Stanley, Meteorspace, CNBC, Harvard Business Review, Climate Partner. This content is paid for by advertisers and is produced in partnership with the Financial Times' Commercial Department. Ken Bowles, Chief Financial Officer at Smurfit Kappa Group in conversation with Uwe Schulte explains how Smurfit Kappa can provide all their packaging solutions with 75 % recycled material content. Safeguarding biodiversity and the care for the well being of local communities are important aspects of the overall Sustainability programme. The significant growth of online shopping and home delivery is a new challenge requiring a redesign of the supply flow of used carton to continue with a circular solution to paperboard for packaging.
