This guest never sits still. Welcome guitarist Zak Loy. If you're in the Austin, TX area, you might know him from any number of bands or projects like Damesviolet, Alpha Rev, Mother's Anthem, and more. If you like classic alternative rock from the 90's, you may have seen him playing guitar for the band Live and he was kind enough to take a break during the final stages of his new solo album, Dinero, to talk about his career. He started playing guitar at age eight but didn't graduate to playing in bars until he was the ripe old age of thirteen. He formed his first band, Damesviolet, with his brother Beaux and that was it. He's been working non-stop ever since. He's played in Alpha Rev so often that I accidentally praised him for someone else's guitar solo. But in my defense, he IS credited on the album. Zak tells me how he met and started working with Ed Kowalczyk and how it evolved from Ed's solo tours to playing rhythm in the back for Live to being the lead guitarist and Ed's right hand man. He also talks about the unique challenges of playing in a legendary band. As I mentioned, Zak has a new solo album coming out called Dinero. Pre-order it through zakloy.com or wherever you get music these days. Follow him @zakloy26 on Instagram. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Merch is available at performanceanx.threadless.com. In this episode, we explore “Mental Jewelry,” the 1991 debut album from Live that introduced the world to singer Ed Kowalczyk's impassioned vocals and the band's thought-provoking, spiritually charged music. Drawing inspiration from Eastern philosophy and big existential questions, “Mental Jewelry” explores themes of self-discovery, compassion, and the search for deeper meaning—all wrapped in an energetic, alt-rock sound that set the stage for the band's breakout success. ******************** SUBSCRIBE ON PATREON FOR ADS-FREE LISTENING AND SPECIAL BONUS CONTENT! Chris closes off the podcast for 2021 with a bang, as he welcomes by far his biggest guest to date! Stuart Davis is one of the most unique and inspirational songwriters in the world, and has drawn praise and critical acclaim from influential figures worldwide. Amongst them, Chris' own musical idol Ed Kowalczyk (from the band +LIVE+) once described Stuart as 'the greatest lyricist I've ever heard', and philosopher Ken Wilber calls him 'a rare genius'. On top of this, Stuart is a successful writer, artist, director, actor, spiritual practitioner and has even constructed his own language! It was little surprise that Stuart was one of the artists who played a crucial part at the beginning of Chris' own creative journey, making this interview all the more poignant. In this episode, Stuart discusses memories of his earliest creative impulses, starting when his father bought him his first guitar and showed him three chords. By the time he was in high school, Stuart had recorded his first album and had sold copies to most of the other students there. Chris also gets to discover more about the inspirations and "stories behind the stories" of a few of his favourite Stuart Davis songs, his impromptu performance with +LIVE+ frontman Ed Kowalczyk and the day Stuart met Kermit The Frog for his own TV series, 'Sex, God & Rock 'n' Roll'. The end result is one of the most compelling interviews on Dead Men Talk thus far and is certainly not to be missed! There was a LOT of content this week. So much so that we had to ignore news in order to talk about the Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, LOKI, Sweet Tooth and Those Who Wish Me Dead. So it is a review heavy week with some crazy Florida stories as well. I believe we found the King of Florida! With the announcement of the newest album from a band that shocked its fanbase back in 2017 with their divisive new sound and direction, we thought it might be fun this week to go over all of the bands we can think of that went through similar drastic changes in their sounds in a segment we're calling CHANGE IT UP / CHANGE IT BACK! Did we think these changes were for the better? Or did we think that these bands would have been better doing what they do best?! We hope you enjoy this fun look down memory lane. Also discussed this week, the new album from Hundredth; an upcoming documentary series based on the 1999 Woodstock festival; and yet MORE new sexual abuse allegations, this time from Bradley Walden and Tyler Carter; and thoughts on music we've been listening to including Black Veil Brides, Greg Graffin, Creeper, Ed Kowalczyk, John Frusciante, blackbear, Fit For A King, and Imminence. Thank you so much for spending some time with us this week! We hope you enjoy this week's episode and we hope that you'll stay subscribed and join us for more in the weeks to come! #Hundredth #Woodstock99 #BradleyWalden #TylerCarter #BlackVeilBrides #GregGraffin #Creeper #EdKowalczyk #JohnFrusciante #blackbear #FitForAKing #Imminence --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theskinnywithmikeandadam/support
We've got a stacked show lined up for you this week with a track-by-track breakdown of the much anticipated third album, and their major label debut, 'Use Me' by PVRIS. They broke onto the scene back in 2014 with their debut full-length, 'White Noise', that turned a lot of heads due to its infectious choruses, genre-bending sonic sounds, and its obvious passion. Now, six years and two albums later, does their music still carry that same fire and infectiousness that first made people pay attention? Check out this week's review to get our takes on it! Also discussed this week, we share our thoughts on the tragic, untimely passing of Chadwick Boseman; we share the details of Brian Fallon's upcoming online show; Bring Me The Horizon has begun teasing new music for their upcoming Post-Human project; Dance Gavin Dance are asking their fans what they'd like to hear on the upcoming Tree City Sessions Part 2 album; a new biopic about Chris Cornell will be shooting next month; unfortunately, we've been made aware of more sexual assault and abuse allegations, this time from Shayley Bourget of Dayshell and Alex Babinski of PVRIS; and Adam reviews albums from Green Day, Ed Kowalczyk, Greg Graffin, and John Frusciante. Thanks so much for spending some more time with this this week! Ed Kowalczyk is the lead singer/songwriter of the rock group Live, who at the time of this recording had just released their sixth studio album, Birds of Pray, and whose first single “Heaven” had already topped the Liquid Audio Download charts for digital singles. Live has had a phenomenal success, selling over 20 million albums worldwide, including two #1 albums on the Billboard charts (Throwing Copper, Secret Samadhi) and five #1 singles. Ed Kowalczyk is a pioneer in integral art, attempting to bring a spiritual edge to that most raucous of art form—rock and roll. We caught Ed on his cell phone the day before he and the band left for a six-week European tour with Bon Jovi. In this intimate discussion of the heart of a rock and roll (that actually has heart), Eddie talks about how the very essence of an authentic performance is awakening and sharing with the audience a glimpse into that one-ness that is everybody’s natural condition. If you don’t think rock and roll can do this, you haven’t heard Live….
The boys are enlightened by Ed Kowalczyk's spiritual truths. Stick around to find out how many members of Live are named Chad.
How does a band reach the pinnacle of both commercial and critical success, dominate the airwaves for a handful of years, only to disintegrate into the ether? That’s probably the question that has haunted the members of Līve for two decades now. The band’s second major album, “Throwing Copper,” was omnipresent on both pop and alternative radio. The video for “Lightning Crashes” was an MTV staple. And then? Poof! After some 8 million albums sold (and a couple of moderately successful follow-ups), they were seemingly gone from the radar. (It could have to do with the fact that in this Google/SEO world, the name “Līve” does not render easily on search engines. Shoulda thought that through, boys!) It’s a shame, really. “Throwing Copper” is everything good about quintessential 90s rock, highlighted by singer Ed Kowalczyk’s mystical/nebulous lyrics.

Before he gets into an entertaining interview with one of his favorite all time bands, Fred goes off on a nacho kick. Yeah, he loves nachos and it shows around his belly. After the nacho affair, an incredible interview commences with Ed Kowalczyk, the lead singer for LIVE, who's celebrating 25 years of its hit album "Throwing Copper." Fred confesses to Ed how a LIVE song deeply touched him as a teenager. Then, it was whiskey time, and Ed's a dynamic whiskey fan, who may have snuck a red solo cup on stage from time to time. Ed, a banana fan, gets accurately paired a Jack Daniel's barrel pick and gets the last drops of Fred's Elijah Craig barrel proof. That made Ed happy. After answer a series of food flavor questions, Ed ends up sipping three beautiful bourbons and wanted to take them home. This year, Live is celebrating 25 years since the release of their iconic Throwing Copper album. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Ed Kowalczyk, has recently come off Live's Summer world tour, for which the band was joined by Bush and Our Lady Peace. In 2020, the renowned rock band will be travelling to Adelaide for Under the Southern Stars. The line-up is also set to feature Bush and Stone Temple Pilots, as well as Rose Tattoo and Electric Mary. “I think the festival atmosphere of this concert line-up is going to be really cool,” Kowalczyk says. Since reuniting in late 2016, Live has enjoyed a return to touring life, with the original lineup, along with two additional members. “It's nice when you actually get to a city and have a day or two off,” Kowalczyk says. When asked about the reunion, and what it has meant for Live, Kowalczyk is reflective. “The demand for the band has been astronomical since the reunion in 2016,” he says. “I love it. I mean, it never gets old.” Since the reunion, Live has released a new EP, Local 717, and more new music is in the works. “Next year, we're looking forward to, after our trip down under, being able to really move into the studio … we haven't released a full length album for many years, so we're excited to get to work on that,” Kowalczyk comments. During their career, Live has achieved seven Top 5 albums in Australia, three of which topped the charts at #1 for a total of ten weeks. “I get to do my hobby for a living,” says Kowalczyk. Under the Southern Stars will be in Adelaide in Bonython Park on April 13 2020 (Easter Monday). Tickets are available at www.underthesouthernstars.com.au Your host for this episode is Kelly Noble. Ed from Live is on Talkin' Rock today. We talk about the 25th anniversary of Throwing Copper and the deluxe version of the album. The year the album broke, they played for tens of thousands at Woodstock 94'. We talk about the early 90's and how it played out for Live, the current tour, getting the band back together and Spinal Tap moments. I also asked him about his solo material and what that meant to him. We talk about new music with the band, his kids watching him play live and his scene from Fight Club. This is the first time I've ever talked with Ed and he couldn't have been greater. Really easy to talk with and some awesome stories. Hope you like this! Singer Chris Shinn is probably most widely known for replacing Ed Kowalczyk in the band Live from 2012-2016. Prior to that Chris has had a rich and diverse career that's veered from playing in Unified Theory with ex-Blind Melon and ex-Pearl Jam members to recording a solo album with a murderers row of Nashville studio legends. He's currently putting the finishing touches on his latest solo work he recorded in his home studio when we caught up with him. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
