Olivia Murphy is a multi-award winning composer, conductor and improviser based in South-East London, originally from Peterborough. After studying jazz saxophone at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Olivia has found composition her main focus and an important emotional outlet. She thinks of herself as a story-teller, enjoying weaving melodic lines with varied textures and ensemble improvisations to bring her ideas and memories to life, and over the last few years has been busy crafting musical stories for various jazz and new music ensembles. Most recently, Olivia stepped in as guest conductor for the Calum Gourlay big band, MD'ing the band through her compositions at the Vortex Jazz Club during the EFG London Jazz Festival. She was also recently commissioned by The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to reimagine a Mike Gibbs composition in celebration of the legendary composer's 85th birthday. The performance in December featured a fourteen piece large ensemble and Julian Argüelles as featured soloist.Support the show
The Big Swing is the world's first double female-fronted big band. It is led by jazz musicians Georgina Jackson and Emma Smith. On Friday 18th November they will be performing at EFG London Jazz Festival and Cadogan Hall, where they will present their own unique interpretations of the old-school big band jazz tradition, adding their own brand of style and charisma. They join Emma to discuss why they felt the need to elevate female visibility in the big band world and to perform live. Of an estimated 18,000 incels, or involuntary celibates, globally, 2500 of them are based in the UK. ‘The Secret World of Incels' is a Channel 4 documentary that gives a window into their lives and explores what makes them engage with these misogynist online forums that have led to some horrific acts of violence. Presenter, Ben Zand tells us about his experience of entering what he describes as a world full of men ‘addicted to hopelessness'. And Dr Kaitlyn Regehr, an Associate Professor in Digital Humanities discusses her concerns over the normalising of incels into our culture and the growing impact on boys and young men. As Arts Council England reveals its 2023-26 national portfolio of funded organisations, Music Matters speaks to ACE's Director of Music, Claire Mera Nelson, about the body's investment decisions. We hear from a cross section of organisations who've seen changes to their public funding, as well as first-time recipients, with contributions from Chief Executive of the Paraorchestra, Jonathan Harper; Artistic and Executive Director of MishMash productions, Liz Muge; and Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Britten Sinfonia, Meurig Bowen. And as the EFG London Jazz Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary, Tom's joined by jazz author and presenter, Alyn Shipton, former Director of Serious (the creative company who administer the festival) Claire Whitaker; and the British-Bahraini jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and composer, Yazz Ahmed, who discuss how the British jazz scene has evolved since the early 90s. Nikki Iles is a pianist, a professor of jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, and a composer. In some ways, I think of her as a British jazz gem, but that would do a disservice to the fact that she's very much loved in other jazz communities around the globe. Her musical work in the UK has seen her become a leading figure in the British jazz tradition. She is known for her collaborations with vocalists Norma Winstone and Tina May, and has expanded her reputation as leader of the Nikki Iles Jazz Orchestra since the ensemble debuted at the 2018 EFG London Jazz Festival. She's worked with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, the WDR Big Band, and led several groups, including The Printmakers comprising a who's-who of British jazz. Most recently, she was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for ‘Services to Music' and an Ivor Novello Jazz Ensemble Composition Prize. Bside Ep. 34 Rebecca Vasmant It's always a pleasure to invite our favourite local musicians to the Bside turntables. Stepping up this time to record an episode live at Radio Buena Vida is the incredible DJ and jazz musician: Rebecca Vasmant. Watch the live recording here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_u8YVx_-Yk&t=147s In a dance music scene dominated by digital sounds and programming, Rebecca provides a refreshing dose of jazz infusion, acoustic instruments, and a diverse knowledge of music. With live events and record fairs, she has certainly made a name for herself in her hometown of Glasgow, but her musical pursuits go beyond spinning and collecting records, and her reputation exceeds Glasgow. As a musician and composer she has had a six month tour with eight-strong Ghanaian outfit Kakatsitsi, events at Worldwide Festival Sete, Glasgow Jazz Festival, EFG London Jazz Festival, Jazz Cafe London, Kasheme Zurich, Brilliant Corners, Casper Montenegro, the Baltic Soul Weekender, and an exciting new residency at Ronnie Scott's as part of the 'Panro' collective. We can't get enough of her latest release “With Love, From Glasgow” a soothing jazzy dreamscape: https://rebeccavasmantartist.bandcamp.com/track/jewels-of-thought But for now let's tuck into a masterclass of selections all under the wide spectrum of jazz, flowing from calming Brazilian vocals, hypnotic eastern horns & sitars, aggressively energetic trumpets, and everything inbetween. For our second and final event at EFG London Jazz Festival 2018 we were joined by Soweto Kinch to look back at the brilliant 'Abstract' by The Joe Harriott Quintet at Kings Place on Sunday 25th November 2018. “Joe Harriott was the sort of pioneer whose significance and unique contributions are only beginning to be recognised long after his passing. His ‘freeform’ concept predated free jazz, he was among the first to appreciate the role of visual art and his Indo-Jazz fusion laid an important milestone for future jazz-world music collaborations. I’m always moved by the ambition and virtuosity of someone who refused to be defined by his humble beginnings or the racism of his times, as he quipped himself, ‘I’m not your equal, I’m your superior.’ I’m really looking forward to listening to and deconstructing Abstract in more forensic detail – discovering more nuance and insights with an audience, and remembering this uncompromising innovator.” Soweto Kinch
Ahead of EFG London Jazz Festival, self-confessed jazz amateur Harriet interviews eminent musician Orphy Robinson and David Jones, a director and programmer of the festival. They talk about where jazz can be misunderstood, how it defies the limitations of the 'genre', the vibraphone, and which type of music you should be listening to on a date. Finally, they answer the question 'is it the end of jazz?' (spoiler: no) To find out more about EFG Jazz Festival at Southbank Centre, head to https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/festivals-series/efg-london-jazz-festival
