When Greg Jenkins, Nirupa Netram, and Elinor Stutz, three colleagues and members of the Inclusion Allies Coalition, come together to discuss the importance of talking about race, they are confronted with their own diverse backgrounds, a goal to support those impacted by racism, and a central conflict between silence and open dialogue.   "It is important for us to understand that race is a very Western idea, but in the context of those parts of the world where race is an understood terminology to understand the effects of race and racism is important for us to, in the case of the IAC, help us understand people that are suffering because of the negative impacts of racism." - Greg Jenkins Greg Jenkins is an older, white, straight male of Catholic upbringing who spent 28 years in the US Army and has been a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant for the last 17 years. Nirupa Netram is an attorney and consultant of Indian descent and Hindu faith. Elinor Stutz is a Jewish woman, a best selling author, and the founder of Smooth Sale, Greg, Nirupa, and Elinor, along with Simma, are colleagues and members of the Inclusion Allies Coalition. Each of them has a different cultural background and provides their own perspective on the importance of talking about race and the value of the Inclusion Allies Coalition. Elinor shares the story of her family's experience and her own experience in corporate. They explain why it is important to have conversations about race, speak out against racism and stand together with people who are different. The Inclusion Allies Coalition provides a safe space for entry into conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a way to connect with people from all around the world.   The Inclusion Allies Coalition brought together three colleagues and friends with a variety of cultural backgrounds. They discussed the importance of having conversations about race and the value of those conversations. In this episode, you will learn the answers to the following: How does being a member of the Inclusion Allies Coalition promote diversity, equity, and inclusion? What challenges have been experienced by those who have been negatively impacted by racism? How can people become more open to learning from those who are different?   Key Topics: [00:45] Three members of the Inclusion Allies Coalition appear on this week's podcast. Each person will give you two minutes, two sentences about themselves. They will give their name, their cultural background. [03:09] “Why do you think it's important to talk about race today?”  We can't have silence now because you're going to call on us. Why is it an important conversation? Well, these are discussions that are happening globally in response to so many issues.   [04:48] Elinor Stutz was raised not to talk about being Jewish because her family were holocaust surivors. She says antisemitism is on the rise and so is racism. It's important for groups to stand together and to really speak out together.   [09:02] The Inclusion Allies Coalition brings together people from all over the world. They are  advocates for people that may be suffering, or negatively impacted by the topics that we're referring to here. Greg finds value in networking with other colleagues that are trying to do good things in their world. [11:09] Being an IAC member allows you to gain access to global practitioners who support and take action to build inclusion. Elinor shares what it means to her to meet so many people who diverse in so many ways. [19:24] When Elinor was growing up, her grammar was half English and half Yiddish. She felt weird all the time. People always told her she was weird. [22:23] Nirupa: “I was very lucky growing up. It wasn't until I moved to the US that I began to experience the negative aspects of race and racism.” She says she would walk into stores and be ignored or looked at a certain way. Nirupa believes people are fundamentally good and capable of change. [27:07] Simma ask Nirupa, “Do you think younger generations are more accepting of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, or it's still the same?” Nirupa “I would like to see the future in upcoming generations, that they are more inclusive. I again believe people are well intended and capable of change.” [31:13] Nirupa: “Inclusion Allies Coalition is an important place in that we can have conversations that we don't have normally. For some folks, like maybe the ones that you're referring to in Charlottesville, that frightens them. We have to create spaces to have the conversations.” [33:35] Simma: What would you like your friends to do to show support for you? Nirupa: I think just maybe us openly talking about it, and sharing ways that they can be an ally to me. I find talking through scenarios that negatively impact us really help. [36:41] Gregory: “We need to acknowledge what has happened so that it's not glossed over". Elinor: I hope that we will become more united and this crime wave based on race and antisemitism as well as toward other groups will end. [42:17] Greg: “For your listeners there's the 4D Tool. The four DS are delay, distract, delegate and direct. Research showed that oftentimes when people see something happening, they don't know what to do. We do have to stand up, which is why we have inclusion allies.” [45:39] Simma: “Share either a movie. film or TV show, or a song that reflects what's going on today around race and differences or allyship. For each of you, I want to know, do you have any?   Guests Bio   Greg Jenkins is a dedicated and passionate leader, facilitator, coach, and mentor dedicated to helping people and teams achieve higher levels of performance.  Greg completed a successful 28+ year US Army career that ranged from overseas duties in Germany, South Korea, and combat duty in Iraq to include several stateside assignments culminating in Washington D.C.  While serving at the Pentagon, Greg teamed up with the Army's Diversity Task Force, and worked directly with the Secretary of the Army and Army Chief of Staff to help establish the Army's Diversity program, policies, and marketing.    Now spanning over three decades from military service to professional corporate consulting, Greg has trained, facilitated, mentored, and coached countless military service members, corporate employees and executive leaders of various industries including the Federal Government, US military, finance, insurance, communications, logistics and retail services.  Greg is a passionate veteran volunteer who enjoys actively mentoring and coaching business professionals, US military service members, veterans.   Social Media Links LinkedIn Twitter   Nirupa Netram is an Indian female immigrant attorney and certified diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace professional with more than two decades of experience in multiple sectors, including the corporate, nonprofit, government, and legal sectors, in the areas of DEI, human resources, program management, strategic planning, operations, compliance, and more. She's the author of several best-selling books, starting with her first one titled, “Nice Girls Do get the Sale: Relationship building That Gets Results.” I just finished reading it! The pearls from decades of Elinor selling in a man's world are still relevant today! I can see why her book is considered evergreen. Elinor has decided to forge ahead with her skills, foresight, and bravery to continually help women. She's a popular inspirational speaker, and is writing Nice Girls Do Get the Sale – part two! Yay! Elinor's mom and dad were great training coaches, with her mom telling her to always be nice to everyone … check, she had the highest sales (by far) amongst the men she worked with. Elinor's dad said, Never allow anyone to count you out … check – check! Bullies were great training for Elinor, too, because she learned to listen, observe and (get this) ask questions. When the meanness took over, she would match their effort and up it a level to end the bullying! Please join me today and let Elinor sail into your heart with her corporation: Smooth sale!

Elinor Stutz encourages her client to believe in themselves; she says that this was her downfall initially.  Elinor’s motto is Believe Become Empower – meaning to do it and teach others to do the same. After Elinor had gained success as a top salesperson, at her first networking event, she proudly announced she was a sales trainer, and people laughed at her and predicted she would soon be out of business.  Four months later, the same people asked how she was able to build her business at lightning speed, having created the Laser Goal Setting System.  A reasonable quota in corporate companies is necessary if you want to change the diversity in sales. Because of the diversity of thinking, if you attract white men you are not doing your business any favours at all, says Elinor. When you hire a recruiter to have people that have gone to other countries as this changes their perspective entirely. Travel allows you to relate to all people - it makes a difference. Buyers have access to more information than ever before says Elinor,  researching you and your competitors ahead of agreeing to a conversation.  She advises that sellers need to do extensive study on the buyer, the industry, and the competition. Then compare how you are different and then take the buyer through the differences and speak to the issue the client has and she says, you will do well. To scale your sales, Elinor says you must build trust upfront, grooming a professional personal relationship and understanding what’s important to them first.  If there is another preferred partner that the buyer is considering, suggest being the backup supplier and ask them to test one of your smaller services upfront so you prove you can deliver outstanding service.  Elinor recalls how she gained the business, and the work, referrals and recommendations grew over time. Elinor’s hero is Dale Carnegie training; she learned the secret to sales success is to be professionally personal and to communicate so that people listen.  Relationship building is the differentiator for selling well says, Elinor. Elinor Stutz (Studs) began breaking through barriers long ago.  She defied the theme, “women can’t sell.”  As the CEO of Smooth Sale, Elinor embraced the motto, “Believe, Become, Empower.” She is an International Best-Selling Author, Top Sales Influencer, and an Inspirational Speaker. Elinor recalled all the awful corporate stories and shared in my manuscript how I overcame each.  Nice Girls DO Get the Sale: Relationship Building That Gets Results and translated into four languages to become an international best-seller. So, in the moment, I made a pledge that I would begin giving back to communities, and I’m a salesperson 100%. So, in my mind and with the great beyond, I pledged that I would do so but with a condition, I would have full recovery and be able to walk out of her hospital on my own.” “I think the most important part of that to me is that you’re clear on what you should be doing, and I think there are so many people especially young people out there that are lost on what they should be doing.” “Sales honestly saved my life.” “That night a brain surgeon came into my room it was unusual he was there and asked if they could do an experiment on me, so I’m a risk taker and I try things to experiment and I instantly said, ‘sure.’” “After surgery when I finally awoke he was standing over me and he said, ‘’there’s no rhyme or reason for what happened, but you will walk out of this hospital in four days.’’ And when I was put in my room, almost the entire medical staff on duty came to see me and they kept calling me the walking miracle.” “Adversity is a reality of our world.” “I had to stand up for myself throughout my childhood, and I was in a city where I didn’t fit in, and so I turned to reading. And reading changed the way I dealt with life.” “You can decide at any point in time to be negative or positive.” “I learned early in my sales career to focus on my goals and what the long-term vision is, and every single night I was diligent about what I wanted to accomplish the next day.” “I think that young people should figure out what you’re good at first and go do that and everybody was born with gifts, go figure out what your gift is, use it and use that to build confidence, and then You’ll find your passion.” “As long as you’re willing to learn from things that went awry, there’s no failure because you learned from it.” “As we start growing, people are going to put us down for our novel ideas, and what I’ve come to learn later in life is that the very worst snare sentiment hurled at you are awful words. That means you are on to something very very exciting that they never saw coming, and that you should proceed with it.”

Never Be Closing – Key To Better Sales with Tim Hurson #197 The second most difficult task of a sale is to ask for the business. Closing a prospect is a monumental challenge for many sales professionals. But maybe we’re looking at this all wrong. Tim Hurson is the author of the book “Never Be Closing”. In this episode Tim shares a process where prospects close themselves without arm twisting or sketchy wordplay trickery. Take your closing skills to the mastery level! Have a Don’t Close Mindset Tim recommends going into a sales conversation with the idea of learning something. Set aside the  expectation of closing quickly. People will close themselves if you do the process right.  It takes time to build a relationship. People fear purchasing from a stranger, but they do appreciate purchasing from those they trust. Purpose of a Sales Call What is the purpose of a sales call?  It’s not to make the sale, it’s to make the sale, AFTER the sale. Sales calls are measured on a binary scale: You closed or NOT closed. This is false. There is nuance in every sales call and you can learn from the experience. Every call is an opportunity for success. Simplest Close of All Ask the question “What more do you need to know before we proceed”.  If they say nothing else start the paperwork that moves them from a prospect to a client. Of course not everyone is qualified for your business. But prospects may know someone who IS qualified. Think referrals. Take Action Advice GPS – learn from experience, evaluate the last sales call and ask the following questions: Great – what went well? Poor – what went poorly? Step ups – what can I do better next time?   How To Find Tim Hurson You can find Tim on LinkedIn linkedin.com/in/timhurson thinkxic.com (Company Website) blog.thinkxic.com/ (Blog) tenkaizen.com (Think Better) Twitter @tim_hurson Book – Never Be Closing – how to sell better without screwing your clients, colleagues or yourself.  How To Close a Sale We have many past episodes sharing advice on how to close a sale. How To Sell Hardware Software and All Things IT with Mike Slowik #181 In this episode we meet Mike Slowik, 34 year veteran of selling hardware software and all things IT  But Mike tells us that he doesn’t actually sell IT. He sells change.  We talk about the enterprise sale and the complexity of working a prospect who brings a large team for the evaluation. Mistakes sellers make: Not communicating, not talking in a style prospects respect. It’s a must if you want to learn how to sell hardware software and IT. The Danger of the Unsolicited RFP It’s difficult to win an RFP, especially one that is requested out of the blue. Most likely your competition wrote the majority of the evaluation. Get a meeting before applying for an unsolicited RFP to see if it’s worth the trouble. Moral of the story – GET THE MEETING. FUD  (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt) FUDing is a process sellers use to motivate prospects to look at competition skeptically. Fear Uncertainty Doubt Get the prospect to dig deep into the competition by creating fear, uncertainty and doubts in their mind. Have the prospect take the initiative and  see if the competition is all they promise. At the same time assume YOUR competition is doing the same to you. Have an answer to set the facts straign about your company. Treat Everyone Like the Boss It only takes on person on the buying team to deep six a deal. Beware of groupthink!  Listen deeply to everyone’s insight. Don’t judge the team, dynamics quickly. It may not be at ALL what you think it it. Nice Girls DO Get the Sale - EGG Interview w/Elinor Stutz. This on demand audio series is a part of the Executive Girlfriends Group Vignette Series. Tiffany Topcik is interviewing Elinor Stutz. The original live interview was 1/29/10. Published by Sourcebooks, Elinor's book is a corporate tell-all about her corporate sales experience and lessons learned along the way. From the beginning and against all odds, she became the top producer by the 4th month of selling and retained that title throughout her career. She began selling an unknown brand of copier door to door facing hostile management trying to toss her out - but she refused to go! Eventually she made it to high tech where it was so unethical that she quit and said "never again". The book was featured in TIME Magazine business supplement, translated into several languages and sells worldwide. Many thousands of copies have sold.
