JOMO… The JOY of Missing Out! As we get older and our lives become more hectic, the FOMO we used to experience can sometimes die down, and we become pumped to simply say, “Nah. I'm not gonna do all that.” Whether it's a social gathering, perceived obligation or something as simple as checking social media, the joy of stepping away and feeling fine with missing out is such a beautiful thing! Let's really examine those “paper cuts,” the little digs that emotionally affected us during our childhoods. Whether it was something seemingly innocuous someone said that really stuck with us or an experience we were denied as kids, those paper cuts can add up and change how we move about the world. But the cool thing is… paper cuts can heal! Ashley chats about those “paper cuts” with clinician, Amanda Garza, LPC, from Ajana Therapy and Clinical Services , and Houston Moms Contributor, Tiffany Harris, about how we move forward, heal, and honor our inner child or teenager who collected those hurts. “Spill the Tea” Win: Ashey got to visit San Francisco for a few days, sans kids! Such a charming city with diverse people, sites, and food! “Cream and Sugar” Recommendations: San Antonio is underrated! Ashley and her boys visited the Alamo City during Spring Break and it was worth the trip! LegoLand, Sea Life , and learning more about the Alamo were the perfect adventure! How old are we becoming? The global aging population is outpacing the new generation quickly. In this episode with Dr. Elizabeth Baker, we discuss the many emerging techno solutions to address the needs of a healthy and assisted living aging population that is highly diverse from demographics to geographics. Find out what design principles can be deployed by technologists that can meet the demand for accessibility and feasibility. What will support trust in the use of these technologies while preserving dignity for the aging at home?
“So, it's a very expensive process. It has a lot of inefficiencies, and a lot of those costs are due to failures. I think we are at the point where so many of these methods have shown in studies to be more predictive for humans that it really is an issue of human health. We need to do better for patients we know we can and that these methods exist, so we need to use them.” This past season, we've focused quite a bit on animal research and experimentation, and a lot of our focus has been on just how horrible it is, how terrible it is for the animals. And a lot of our focus has been really on just how bad it is, how bad it is for the animals, how bad it is for science, and how bad it is for taxpayers who are spending so much money on this stuff. What we haven't focused enough on are solutions. And there are solutions. There are many many human relevant methods that are here to replace animal testing and there are many more on the way. Elizabeth is the director of research policy for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. They're a nationwide organization of physicians and laypersons that promote preventative medicine. They conduct clinical research, and they advocate for more effective, efficient and ethical medical research, product testing and training. pcrm.org

#37 - ADHD in our Workplace, in our Kids, and US - with Elizabeth Baker Today's conversation is real and raw and I couldn't be more thankful for the vulnerability and honest conversation. My guest today is the wonderful Elizabeth Baker. She is a friend that I met through a mastermind group I belong to. Elizabeth is married with 5 kiddos with ages ranging from 12 to 4! Woah! She's busy! She grew up on the Canadian prairie in a town of 300 people. She earned a bachelor's degree from BYU -Idaho in Social Studies Education. She was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 36 and has been trying to share her story ever since in hopes she can help others on their own journey. Elizabeth is very passionate about speaking out in favor of being curious about ADHD. Today we dive in on these topics: The shame of feeling like there is constantly “something wrong with us” What neurodivergent means How to channel those “why can't I focus” thoughts Behaviors and character traits of someone who has ADHD Signs that someone on your work team may be struggling with ADHD Understanding how ADHD shows up for and in our kids. ADHD is a real struggle for a lot of working women in the world right now and is still underdiagnosed. In 2018, the CDC reported an increase of 344% in women seeking medication for ADHD, while Google searches in the U.S. related to ADHD in women more than doubled between March 2021 and March 2022. The workplace is where many women with ADHD struggle the most, whether it's attempting to work the same way as their neurotypical team members, navigating the social scene, living up to expectations, or, notably, finding the confidence to ask for help - all while trying to show up positively for their spouses and children. Many women are trying to mask their symptoms or blame themselves in order to conform with, which we know is so not healthy! Today's conversation is all about trying to help you if you struggle with ADHD. Both Elizabeth and I get real about how this has affected our own lives and how we think we and you…. are fabulous for it! The Cold Coffee Club went LIVE!!! And we were giving away a Britax Click-Tight car seat! Thanks so much to everyone who joined us for our unedited chat that almost didn't happen! (Y'all, all the technical difficulties came out of the woodworks as we prepped for this fun day!) “Cream and Sugar” Recommendations: Jenny checked out Splashway Water Park in Sheridan, TX. Not only is there a ton of fun there for all ages, but you can bring your own food! That's a huge selling point for mamas on a budget! Ashley is so pumped to take her boys to Big Rivers Waterpark & Adventures to enjoy “wet, dry and aerial fun!” We look forward to sliding down fun slides and making a splash, but also giving ziplining a shot and visiting turtles and baby alligators. There are tons of splash pads all over Houston that provide free fun for your kids! Nottingham Park, Discovery Green, Kemah, Lents Family Park East are just a few of our favorites! The Houston Food Fest has been postponed until November 12. Pundt Park is the perfect “Beach Day” destination without actually going to the beach! Feeding the kiddos during the summer can be so insanely exhausting! How are they always hungry? What do they want? What quick options do we have? Jenny and Ashley explore quick lunch options (sandwiches, trays, quesadillas, fruit, etc) but they also explore a few quick recipes. Pulled Pork Sandwiches Grilled Chicken Apple Sausage (Adells) Chicken thighs with sweet potatoes Chicken Caesar Wraps Kielbasa, peppers, potatoes and onion skillet Mango-Peach Salsa Pork Tenderloin BLT Salad And Jenny loves providing her kids with a schedule for each day so there is still a sense of structure and she isn't bombarded with constant “What are we gonna do today?” Houston Moms “House Blend” Post: We are so thankful for the insights of our editor, Elizabeth Baker, who wrote an incredible post with an important message. The Burden of Summer: What not all Moms can make it Magical reminds us that there are many restrictions that burden moms as they try to create summer magic. We can't all do it all! And that's ok. Breathe, moms. Your kids will be fine and enjoy the summer break without huge family vacations or sleep-away camps. They will be fine! We are wrapping up our regular season, but we will still be posting new episodes every other week as we head into Season 3 of The Cold Coffee Club!
Anxiety and ADHD are very different, but sometimes the symptoms can look similar. The correct diagnosis is critical to guide treatment and to make sense of things. As much as the right diagnosis can heal, the wrong one can also harm. Understanding how anxiety might look like ADHD, and the telltale differences between the two, can make an important difference in avoiding a misdiagnosis, and helping you deal with the symptoms that might be getting in your way. This episode could possibly change your life! That is if you are anything like today's guest Elizabeth Baker. She shares her personal story about living with a misdiagnosis of anxiety and depression, While trying to treat those conditions, she couldn't help but feel frustrated because nothing seemed to be working. Then one day she was tuning into a podcast and was listening to another's story about being diagnosed with ADHD and how that caused anxiety, and she immediately related to all that was being shared. Thanks to this podcast episode she listened to, she was able to seek out a correct diagnosis of ADHD Anxiety and treatment plan, and it's made all the difference. So if symptoms of anxiety and ADHD can be the same, does it matter how it's treated? Yes. Yes. Yes. It matters. Cody and Elizabeth talk about how the symptoms aren't the problem. The condition driving the symptoms is the problem. Understanding whether it's ADHD, anxiety, or both is the first and most important step in making sure you're getting what you need to move forward. Although both anxiety and ADHD are manageable, they just need different types of support to improve.Did you learn something new today? It's a breakthrough in the fight to end animal testing! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just launched Innovative Science and Technology Approaches for New Drugs aka ISTAND. This pilot program will help reduce and replace animal testing as part of drug development. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has worked toward this goal for several years by meeting with the FDA and Congress and providing expert input, hosting Congressional briefings, and leading drug development stakeholders in advocating for a pathway for the approval of nonanimal, human-biology based drug testing methods. PCRM's Elizabeth Baker breaks down this breakthrough!

A major push is underway to end lab testing on dogs by pharmaceutical companies. On this bonus episode of The Exam Room™, “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll is joined by Elizabeth Baker, pharmaceutical policy program director for the Physicians Committee, who shares the incredible story of Vanda Pharmaceuticals. The biopharmaceutical company is working to end animal testing even at the expense of their bottom line. As you’ll hear, Vanda was ordered by the FDA to test a potential new drug for a stomach disorder on dogs. However, the company’s researchers concluded that the study would not be useful and cause unnecessary animal suffering. Vanda then asked FDA not to require the dog study, which would have taken place after the drug was already being tested in humans. But the FDA pushed back and barred Vanda from continuing with any further trials. Now, Vanda is fighting back! Baker also discusses the modern non-animal testing methods that are faster and more cost-effective in bringing drugs to market. --- --- Donate to PCRM http://bit.ly/donatePCRM --- --- Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC --- --- Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee --- --- Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or many other podcast providers. There is a bill that can save the lives of millions of animals. The Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act of California would ban the sale of all cosmetic products that have been tested on animals statewide. If passed, it would could spell the end of all animal testing in the cosmetics industry! Actress Kristin Bauer van Straten from the hit HBO series True Blood joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to talk about the difficulties of having exclusively non-animal tested makeup on set and her time lobbying at the state capital. She emotionally recalls becoming aware of the conditions animals are kept in during lab testing. Chuck is also joined by Elizabeth Baker, who is the regulatory policy director for the Physicians Committee. An interdisciplinary discussion of Kirsten Shepherd-Barr's book Kirsten Shepherd-Barr (Associate Professor of Modern Drama, University of Oxford) discusses her book Theatre and Evolution from Ibsen to Beckett with Michael Billington (Theatre Critic, The Guardian), Morten Kringlebach (Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow, Department of Psychiatry, University of Oxford) and Laura Marcus (Goldsmiths' Professor of English Literature). About the book: Evolutionary theory made its stage debut as early as the 1840s, reflecting a scientific advancement that was fast changing the world. Tracing this development in dozens of mainstream European and American plays, as well as in circus, vaudeville, pantomime, and "missing link" performances, Theatre and Evolution from Ibsen to Beckett reveals the deep, transformative entanglement among science, art, and culture in modern times. The stage proved to be no mere handmaiden to evolutionary science, though, often resisting and altering the ideas at its core. Many dramatists cast suspicion on the arguments of evolutionary theory and rejected its claims, even as they entertained its thrilling possibilities. Engaging directly with the relation of science and culture, this book considers the influence of not only Darwin but also Lamarck, Chambers, Spencer, Wallace, Haeckel, de Vries, and other evolutionists on 150 years of theater. It shares significant new insights into the work of Ibsen, Shaw, Wilder, and Beckett, and writes female playwrights, such as Susan Glaspell and Elizabeth Baker, into the theatrical record, unpacking their dramatic explorations of biological determinism, gender essentialism, the maternal instinct, and the "cult of motherhood." It is likely that more people encountered evolution at the theater than through any other art form in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Considering the liveliness and immediacy of the theater and its reliance on a diverse community of spectators and the power that entails, this book is a key text for grasping the extent of the public's adaptation to the new theory and the legacy of its representation on the perceived legitimacy (or illegitimacy) of scientific work.
