Writing a book is one thing—getting it published and into readers' hands is another battle entirely. Traditional publishing can feel like an endless waiting game, while self-publishing comes with the challenge of standing out in a crowded market. Even after the book is out, getting people to notice it requires just as much effort as writing it in the first place. The hardest part isn't just finishing the book—it's making sure it actually reaches the audience it deserves. Erik Seversen is a renowned author, speaker, and entrepreneur who has lived an extraordinary life. He has hitchhiked from London to Central Africa, lived with a remote tribe in the Amazon, and built and sold successful businesses. Erik has published 15 best-selling books on topics such as mindset, peak performance, and AI, and has helped over 300 people become best-selling authors. Mountains and valleys, ordinary to extraordinary is a theme that thrills anthropologist Erik Seversen. Erikspotlights the essence of feeling fulfilled and purposeful. Describing himself as ordinary he admits doing extraordinary things, especially after being told he would not be able to do something. He learned to confront his fears and embrace the possibilities and gifts in less than ideal situations. “Challenges are what makes life good. Challenges do make us who we are. Fear is a team effort. Faith wins over fear every time, whether we are in the valley or the mountain top”. “Mountains and valleys are both stepping stones to shape our lives. Movement in our lives and achieving paradigm shifts is very much related to our mindset. Whenever something bad happens, I always ask myself, what's the positive? What do I see that's the positive, where is the gift? “

Language with Erik Seversen Today, Erik Seversen is speaking to us from lock down in Los Angeles about language. He's got fingers in all kinds of pies. He's a guest speaker and he has a company that helps people who speak English as a second language. Where a love for teaching languages began... Back in the nineties, Erik joined an American campus in Japan. He was a liaison between the students and teacher because, though they all spoke English, there was a cultural barrier. Erik's job was to help students feel comfortable with Western teachers. It was an excellent introduction to education and the ability to change lives. It gave an intercultural experience which he loved and gave him an experience if teaching. After a detour into kickboxing in Thailand, Erik returned to Richmond, Virginia to spend more time with a girl at home. He ended up working at some community colleges and then got hired at a university as an instructor of English as a second language. Teaching to business After marrying said girl, Zip, and starting a small family, Erik enjoyed teaching. Great colleagues, great family, great life. But he found he couldn't raise his family on his teaching salary. As a result, begrudgingly he moved into business... ...and loved it. He became part of a company in international development. Through business he was using all of these strategies of success to inject into motivation, practical skills and inclusivity. But he realised no-one was using these in education and so wanted to get back to his first love. But, he wasn't going to be a teacher. Erik had a vision to teach teachers and students how to be successful with all of the business formulas he has learnt. That was the start of Language Linq. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Gin-Oclock.mp4 What's the main ingredient of helping somebody to learn English as a second language? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Confidence.mp4 The more that we are scared, the worse our ability to communicate naturally is. Therefore, the more relaxed we are, the better communicators we are. One of the first things Erik asks his clients to do is to dream in English. What are the last 5 minutes of your day? Do it in English. Whether that be praying, meditating, thinking about breakfast for the next day. Just do it in English. It won't take very long for you to tend up dreaming in English as a result! Once you dream in English, your English is great and you might not remember what you say but your confidence has lifted. Why? Because you realise that English is inside of you. It's all there for you to use and you don't need to be nervous. Confidence, pursuing passions and the coronavirus Erik did a LinkedIn post regarding this. His routine is shattered and speaking events postponed and cancelled. We can focus on these things and wallow in our sorrows, or we can do something different. Reset your mind and think about what you can do with what you have got. What's your Covid-19 next 100 days going to look like? Focus on helping people Make lists of what is working, what's not and where we need to focus - lists make reality Inspiration is nothing without action. Act. What terror taught about business Erik has had the unfortunate experience of having a gun to his head (argh!). But it taught him a very valuable lesson about business. To back track a little, Erik was at high school and had an average record until he realised he wanted to become a professor. Having a goal set in his mind really helped him motivate energy to learn and work hard.   He applied to UCLA and was rejected but went to community challenge and was doing very well. However, he needed to set himself apart from all the other A students and went to Africa. He was crossing the border in Nigeria and going through checkpoints when something went wrong and he had a gun to his head - even in his mouth. He was accused of being a spie!

Erik Seversen-  “Ordinary to Extraordinary” is something Erik Seversen (SEE-ver-sin) lives by, and he’s been pretty successful at it. Born into an average, middle-class family in a suburb of Tacoma, Washington, Erik received no support from school counselors and others, but Erik didn’t let them crush his desire to accomplish amazing things. Erik also took life experiences, like rejection from his dream school UCLA, and turned them into challenges. He excelled in a community college and got into UCLA two years later.   Erik studied Anthropology (often voted the least-likely-to-succeed major), and used anthropology in business, helping a company grow from $7M to over $100,000,000 in ten years doing International Business Development. He also taught English as a Second Language for 10 years in Japan, France, Thailand, University of Virginia, and UCLA. Erik uses entrepreneurial success formulas and motivational materials in business, but he’s also pioneering their use in the field of education. Erik has traveled to over 80 countries around the world and all 50 states in the USA. He has ridden a motorcycle on six continents. He also climbs mountains, having summited the highest peak of nine countries and eight states. Experiences ranging from discussing philosophy at cafés in Paris to having a machine gun stuck in his mouth in Nigeria to living with a remote Indian tribe deep in the Amazon have forged a unique perspective that Erik uses to work through both the big, life questions and small, everyday decisions. In 2018, Erik published a #1 bestselling book about these experiences and how anyone can be extraordinary. Erik is a writer, speaker, adventurer, entrepreneur, and educator who refused to let others tell him what he could and could not do. He continually worked toward his goals even when others said they were unreasonable. Erik’s travels and intersections with people from around the world were a study of people, love, struggle, and ways of thinking that can be used to tackle problems in school, business, and life. His current ambitions are sharing the lessons he’s learned through his business and language school and climbing mountains which he says makes everyday challenges seem a lot easier. “Ordinary to Extraordinary” is something Erik Seversen lives by, and he’s been pretty successful at it. Born into an average, lower-middle-class family, Erik received no support from school counselors and others, but he didn’t let them crush his desire to accomplish amazing things. Erik also took life experiences, like rejection from his dream school, UCLA, and turned them into challenges to overcome. He eventually did get into UCLA. Erik studied Anthropology and used it in business to help the company he works grow from a value of $7 million to over $100 million in 10 years. He also taught English as a Second Language for 10 years in Japan, France, Thailand, and universities within the US. He has traveled to over 80 countries around the world and 49 states in the US. He has ridden a motorcycle on six continents and crossed the US on one twice. Erik also climbs mountains, having summited the highest peak of eight countries and five states. He even once had a machine gun stuck in his mouth in Nigeria.   “You can have the best of the best working together, but to create that right thing and that recipe that really creates the right taste and the right success, there has to be synergy.” Erik Seversen   Worst investment ever The perfect ingredients for a perfect business Erik knew a friend who was putting an idea of a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles into action. Since this friend had been working with a lot of restaurant projects before, Erik was very excited about the concept. When his friend was looking for a head chef, Erik referred someone he knew who has published a best-selling book on cooking vegan. With the perfect duo working on the restaurant, things started happening. They raised enough money to take the project off the ground and started running it. The investors were really happy to see the business moving forward. The clash of the flavors Suddenly, the business was not making the numbers they’d projected. The perfect team which Erik helped create didn’t mix. And the supposed wonders that were expected from the dream team didn’t happen as planned. What happened was that their financial guy who was supposed to be in charge of the money and finances started making creative decisions that were supposed to be the job of the head chef. The head chef, on the other hand, wanted to make financial decisions. So, all of these things that each of them knew how to do, when they couldn't stick to what they know and just let things happen, things went south. The second wave of failure There was a second round of funding that Erik and his team used to keep the restaurant alive for a little longer. They invested the money into a new location in a prime location. They went for it because they thought that there was going to be 1,600 units of prime customers living in the same building as their restaurant. In the end, over half of the units were bought as a secondary home. So rather than having 1,600 units, half stood empty. In the end, Erik left and was shocked that with all of the ingredients - some of the smartest people and the best chefs he knew, they couldn't make a go of this restaurant. Lessons learned Having a bigger role in the business can prevent conflicts By having a bigger role in the business, rather than being a spectator, you will probably notice immediately the personality conflicts and prevent any impending clash that will take a toll on the business. Do your homework diligently Doing your due diligence is a basic tenet in investment. Failing to do it diligently will always get you into trouble. Synergy is a key to success You can have the best of the best working together, but to be successful, there has to be synergy. Andrew’s takeaways Bring your team together to achieve a common goal You can have the best of the best on a team, but you will never win unless they are given the direction and the support to work together to achieve a common goal. Find the right location for your business Finding the right location can be hard, but it is one of the keys to the success of your business. Actionable advice First, do your homework and figure out if it was a good idea to do business. Second, always look for the next opportunity and look for the positive in it. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Erik’s work goal is to have more public speaking engagements. His family goal is to make his wife’s year as good as his last year. Lastly, his self-goal this year is to climb another high mountain. “Ordinary to Extraordinary” is something Erik Seversen (SEE-ver-sin) lives by, and he’s been pretty successful at it. Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is with a man that as soon as you hit his website and see “Love the Life you Live! Freedom is taken, not given. By living an Intentional Life, we ordinary people can live extraordinary lives.” you know he is perfect for Join Up Dots. He is a speaker, writer, educator and adventurer who has traveled to over 80 countries around the world and 49 of the 50 states in the USA, and he's lived in France, Japan, Thailand, French Guiana, Washington State, Virginia, Alaska, and California. All the time learning from different people as well as having time to think. Allowing the brain to disconnect and focus on the present is the greatest way to get everything back in focus and on track. He has ridden a motorcycle on six continents and crossed the USA on one twice, and he's summited of the highest mountain of eight countries and five states. He also has extensive experience teaching at the university level and working in business development, and he still pursues an adventurous lifestyle with his family. Now let's reflect back on those first words. Freedom is taken, not given. And I'm sure there would have been many times when our guest would have thought “I would love to do this, but nah, I can't…it's not for people like me!” So when did he first start his first adventure, and was it as small journey into the unknown or a huge leap into the unknown? And where does he see so many people going wrong, who say “Erik, I would love to do what you are doing?” Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr. Erik Seversen. Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Erik Seversen such as: How so many people fail to realise that there is a world of adventure on their own doorstep. Get in a car at the weekend and see what's waiting for you nearby. Erik shares how he started his first business, and the steps that he took to ensure that a steady growth was occuring month by month. How the power of the work life triangle is the way forward. How many of us add a big dose of “Me Time” into the balancing act? and lastly…. We discuss how the skill of delegation, and allowing people to do things even if its not the way that you would do it, is a key part of business growth.

Erik Seversen is a successful entrepreneur who's learned how to be successful through his life-long adventures. He’s ridden a motorcycle across the US, been to over 80 different countries, climbed mountains and lived with a remote tribe in the Amazon. He’s now the founder of Innovative Educational Services Group, a language entrepreneurial coaching service. He shares his stories through his writing and speaking. His new book, ‘Ordinary to Extraordinary’ comes out in July 2018. “You’re defined by your own actions.” - Erik Seversen Erik Seversen - Current Excitement Erik was recently hired by a client to help him with one interview, he wound up getting the job, liked his few sessions with Erik and now Erik coaches him once per week!  What’s exciting to Erik is the fact he's an intelligent guy, English is his second language and he's working in IT  here in the States. Erik thinks he can take him to a whole new level with a few new techniques. Just thinking about helping him has got Erik really excited right now. “One of the biggest things that has happened in my life is having to overcome fear.” - Erik Seversen Start Me Up Erik’s adventures began by taking advantage of doors that were opened for him. His first opportunity came at 18 when he wanted to ride his bike from Tacoma, Washington to Santa Barbara, California. His parents let him go with a guy a little older than him and gave him two weeks to cover the distance. "No matter how bad something seems, something good is going to come of it.” - Erik Seversen His companion made it to the border of Oregon and California, unfortunately, he had to return home for military reserve duty. Erik continued the last 100 miles on his own. He discovered that being alone, meeting new people and being afraid at times turned out to be a really great feeling. There was so much more than was in his backyard and he wanted more. This began his taste for adventure and he’s not done yet. Final Four What have you done differently in your life to stand out? “Wearing the red pants of course and John Berger’s book, ‘The Ways of Seeing’. Any single thing I look at I try and look at from multiple perspectives.” What makes someone stand out in business or in life? “Passion and focus. You have to be passionate but don’t get distracted chasing coins.”   What’s the best advice you’ve received? “Take time to think and don’t let negativity affect you.” How do you want to be remembered? “Someone who is genuine and believes what he does and pushing boundaries.” To hear how Erik Seversen hitchhikes from London to Zaire survives a gun in his mouth and more adventure, download and listen to the show! Erik Seversen is a writer, speaker, adventurer, educator, and entrepreneur who refuses to let others tell him what he can or cannot do.   This way of thinking stems back to when he was rejected from his dream school UCLA, and turned that setback into a challenge. He excelled in community college and got into UCLA two years later, where he graduated near the top of his class. And that's just the very tip of the spear with Erik.   If you take a look at his resume of life experiences, you'd hardly believe that one person could accomplish everything that he's done. To list a few of these experiences, Erik has: traveled to over 80 countries been to 49 of the 50 states ridden a motorcycle on 6 continents and crossed the USA on one twice had a machine gun stuck in his mouth in Nigeria summited the tallest mountains of 8 countries and 5 states lived with a remote Indian tribe deep in the Amazon helped a company grow from $7M to over $100,000,000 in ten years as VP of International Business Development written a book, ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY: An Average Person's Adventurous Search For Meaning, which comes out in March 2018   Erik's journey personifies the idea of living life with intention.   He uses entrepreneurial success formulas and motivational materials in business, but he's also pioneering their use in the field of education.   Links: http://erikseversen.com/millennial

Ordinary to Extraordinary is something Erik Seversen lives by, and he’s been pretty successful at it. Erik studied Anthropology (often voted the least-likely-to-succeed major), and used anthropology in business, helping a company grow from $7M to over $100,000,000 in ten years as VP of International Business Development. He also taught English as a Second Language for 10 years in Japan, France, Thailand, and universities within the USA. Erik uses entrepreneurial success formulas and motivational materials in business, but he’s also pioneering their use in the field of education. Erik is a writer, speaker, adventurer, entrepreneur, and educator who refused to let others tell him what he could and could not do. He continually worked toward his goals even when others said they were unreasonable. Erik’s travels and intersections with people from around the world weren’t just a fun romp around the planet — they were a deep study of people, love, struggle, and ways of thinking that can be used to tackle problems in school, business, and life. His most current ambitions are sharing the lessons he’s learned through his business and climbing mountains which he says makes everyday challenges seem a lot easier. What you’ll learn about in this episode: Ordinary to Extraordinary: how Erik lives this out in his life Why the way we approach an interaction with people determines how it is going to play out — positively or negatively The tendency for entrepreneurs to spend too much time preparing and why they’re ready way sooner than they think Asking for help and not being afraid of what other people think Why things will change in your favor when you step back and take a deep breath Erik’s upcoming book that shares lessons from his life and structures them around the pillars from Emily Esfahani Smith’s book “The Power of Meaning” Ways to imbue your life with more purpose and meaning Recalibrating yourself by occasionally breaking your routines Leading by absolute example (or leading by action, not command) Staying focused and doing what needs to be done to work on your goal Perfectly balancing family, work, and self (and why you cannot neglect the self part of that triangle) Staying focused on what truly matters Ways to contact Erik: Website: erikseversen.com/absolute

He certainly forged a life filled with extraordinary feats. He went from flunking the second grade to graduating high school with a below-average GPA to flourishing at Green River Community College to graduating near the top of his class at UCLA and attaining his Masters from the University of Virginia.Erik has ridden a mtorcycle on six continents and crossed the USA on one twice, and he’s summited of the highest mountain of eight countries and five states.
