In the sixth episode titled Exploring Opportunities for EU-Canada Hydrogen Cooperation, our CEO Jorgo Chatzimarkakis discusses with John Risley, Charmain and CEO of CFFI Ventures, and Stefan Kaufmann, former Innovation Commissioner for Green Hydrogen of the German government and now adviser to Thyssenkrupp. In the discussion about hydrogen market and technology's development in Canada and in Germany, the businessman and the policy advisor bring two different geographical and expertise perspectives about the topic. Taking into consideration the US' IRA, Canada's investments in the hydrogen sector and the European plans regarding H2Global and the Hydrogen Bank, our guests compare North America and the EU. They debate over the economic and financial support the industry needs to invest in the green energy transition and the role global cooperation and competition play.
Despite some "kicking and screaming", Patrick Costello insists climate action is on course. The recently-returned prodigal Green TD reckons his legal challenge to an EU-Canada trade deal has given the Attorney General a "legal headache". CETA, the ground-breaking EU Canada free trade deal four years on. With success stories now abounding, what are the ground realities for an agreement whose successful conclusion once teetered amid widespread protests and delays? The C in CETA isn't Canada. It's comprehensive. That's what made it different: more modern and more broad-reaching across economic, labour, environmental and climate issues. This is over and above the bricks-and-mortar business of eliminating tariffs on goods and services and opening up new markets on both sides of the Atlantic. So how has it stood the test of time? Albeit quite a short time and one gigantically distorted by the effects of the Covid pandemic? Pretty well, it seems. “We had an increase in exports to Canada in the middle of a recession,” says John Clarke, chief negotiator for DG Agri at CETA and one of the directorate's directors. This sixth episode of “Food for Europe” features a wide-ranging interview with John Clarke that looks well beyond the controversies of this agreement, to implementation by both sides of climate commitments, sustainable farming and Europe's food security. We also report from the Beaujolais wine region in France, following producer Philippe Bardet during the collecting and pressing of this year's grape harvest. He's delighted to see exports to Canada increase in the past four years, but also concerned about protections for Europe's celebrated geographical denominations and indications.
The United States, the European Union, Canada and The United Kingdom have imposed sweeping sanctions on Belarusian entities and officials and called on Minsk to end its repressive practices against its own people. The allies also told the administration of President Alexander Lukashenko to cooperate with investigations into the forced landing of a Ryanair flight there in May and the arrest of the journalist Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, who were on board. They said they are committed to supporting the long-suppressed democratic aspirations of the people of Belarus and stand together to impose costs on the regime for its blatant disregard of international commitments.

At last Britain is free and ready to discover its place in the world. The war is over, as Nigel Farage declared, without him getting his suit dirty (except the occasional milkshake). As Phil Dobbie discusses on today’s Balls Radio, the UK and the EU will state their negotiating position on the future trading relationship. Boris Johnson is hoping for something similar to Canada – but how good will that be, really? Balls Radio examines what the EU Canada trade deal looks like. And is Dominque Raab right to suggest it’ll mean there’s no need for customs checks into and out of the UK?

Wilhelm SCHOELLMANN (XPOL).EU-Canada negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) started in May 2009 and were declared concluded in September 2014. The agreement's overall aim is to increase flows of goods, services and investment to the benefit of both partners. For the EU, CETA represents the first comprehensive economic agreement with a highly industrialised Western economy. On 5 July 2016, the Commission made three proposals for a Council decision with respect to CETA: to sign the agreement, on provisional application, and on conclusion. The Council and Member States have had difficult discussions on the conditions under which CETA can be signed.Think Tank briefingSource: © European Union - EP
